19 years later still rocking my 2000 5-speed e-locked supercharged 3rd gen. Lots of vehicles have come in and out of my garage...this is the one that has never left.
@@AdventuresWithSmitty In the past couple of years I have tried to replace it because I wanted a vehicle with modern safety tech. I drove more than 40 vehicles, and the only one I liked more than the 3rd gen was a Land Rover Defender on air suspension, but the reliability of those is disastrous. The 3rd gen is basically bomb proof, it's fun to drive with the 5-speed and supercharger, it has a lot of power and yet can still pull 19.5 MPG highway (even lifted). E-locker is great off-road, its super maneuverable, tows well, classic good looks...nothing like it will ever be made again. Early this year I realized there is no replacement for it, so I decided to keep it and buy a Tesla Model Y for day-to-day.
I have a 2000 4runner. My dad was the original owner, he had it until he passed in 2018. I couldn’t sell it as it was in mint condition and only had 90,000 miles, so I kept it as a second car. I still have it, it now has 105,000 miles. Still mint. No rust, paint and interior look new. I love my 4runner, I’ll never sell it.
I totally agree with you 100 percent. The value of these trucks will only go up. Even though they are super reliable, there will be less and less of them every passing year. So snatch them up, and maybe hold on to them like stock. I have (2) 3rd gen 4Runner 2001, 2WD SR5, and a 1999 Limited 4x4 w/ e locker. Also, I’m have an extra 4X4 trans, and a 5vzfe engine on an engine stand, on standby. So yes. I agree with you 100 percent, I don’t want a $600 + car payment, I rather put that $ back in my trucks. Excellent analysis.
I have a unicorn lol. But not what you think. Bought my 1997 T4R 2WD 4cylinder manual transmission back in 2002. Took me to hell and back. Currently 450k miles. I did replace the engine at 350k because my head gasket blew and messed up my block. I was young and limited means/funds. Lower ball joint broke on the way out of mechanic garage!! Replaced it with OEM and will soon swap the other side. Replaced rack, brake master cylinder. Replaced radiator and many alternators because I use auto zone crap that die exactly every two years. Had one clutch job ever. Just replaced all fuel injectors. Etc. my black beauty is not immortal but yes it’s fun and small and easy to work on. My driver seat is falling apart and most of my door handle hinges need replacing because they have a rubber damper that gets tangled inside. I wish I did have the v6 and not sure if I could swap one in there and use the same transmission. Great for local mountains and camping. Anyone with a 3rz base 2WD? Let me know your experiences and mods. Thanks
They're never going to be a collectors item. These vehicles have frame issues which Toyota still recalling. Every vehicle can be reliable if taken care of properly. The fanboyism though is what keeps these Toyotas super expensive for what they are.
I love that you brought up the visibility, I've been driving my 02 for the past ten years and I never really think about how good the visibility is until I drive someone else's car and quickly realize I can barely see anything around me in their car.
I’m so glad I found this channel! I happen to be that Grandma who has a 2000 4 Runner SR5 that I’m considering selling. After reading these comments, I feel like I should keep it, but it never gets driven except when it snows. Still looks beautiful with only clear coat damage from the dessert sun. A couple neighbors have asked if I’ll sell it and now a have a good idea about price range. It only has 120,800 miles. Wish me luck!
Just picked up a single owner 2002 Limited with 90k miles. Perfect condition interior, seriously looks like its a few years old, and only a few minor scratches on the exterior. Installed some Stealth Customs F5's, Falken Wildpeaks and soon an OME lift, so happy with it.
Been driving my 98 4Runner since 2008. Before then it was my mom’s car. It’s been through a lot. Either the world abused it or I did but it’s never really let me down. Just wish it was 4x4. Beyond me wanting a 4x4 it’s damn near perfect.
I've had my '96 Limited 4Runner with 287,000 miles for about 2 years now and love it! It has a long list of mods that will hopefully only keep growing. She's a solid old girl! Thanks for the great video. These cars deserve a lot of respect!
Great video. When you were talking about finding a unicorn owned by grandma it made me chuckle a bit. I just bought a 97 4Runner with 160,000 miles, 5-speed, 4WD, E-Locker, all original and garage kept, from the original owner who was a grocery getter grandpa. He didn’t know what he had. Got it for $9k :)
I just picked up a 98 SR5 for $4600...from a Used Car dealership! 278k, very good condition, Carfax says it was properly maintained for the last 25 years. Runs great, everything works as it should...... I could not believe the price on this thing when I saw it and I'm pretty sure the guy had no idea what he had on the lot. Looking forward to owning this gem for quite some time. Great job on the video, thanks for putting it
@@diablodan1459 yes I still have it, she runs like a top. Got a few suspension issues but that's to be expected with the mileage but as far as drivetrain and engine goes, she purrs..
I'm still driving my 88 Toyota 4×4 truck with camper shell. You nailed it, maintenance & preventive maintenance is the key! And I use mine for exploring & camping.
Just joined the 4Runner family last July with my 1999 4Runner Limited 4x4 with rear locker! Love it. Went on a couple off-road trips in my buddy's 2nd gen over the last few years, and he sold me on getting into the off-road scene. I was reluctant to get into off-roading because of high price of entry, but the community is awesome and the capabilities of the vehicle are great since I've always been into hiking, camping and whatnot. Sucks that this hidden gem has received so much attention over the last few years, but it was only a matter of time before people caught on. I just wish I jumped on the bandwagon sooner.
Just picked up a rust free 2000 limited 160k miles with the rear diff lock for $11k, owned by a mechanic so 99% of the maintenance needed was already done. I love it
Bought my 2002 4Runner Sport Edition in 2010. There were not many 4Runners for sale in my neck of the woods so I went south of the border and picked it up near Seattle. It had around 100,000 miles on it. It now has just over 130,000 miles. It's been a great truck. As you mentioned in your video, it is nice to drive, has fantastic visibility in every direction and is very versatile. I've taken if off road a few times and on snowy roads and it has performed well. Just picked up some stock rims for it which I'll put on this Spring.
I bought a 97 v6 4x4 with 208,000 miles back in 2016 for $5,000. The people I bought it from said their phone was ringing off the hook. I was second in line and the first guy to look at it low balled and missed out. People gave me grief over it saying I paid too much. Now it has 326,000 miles and has only had three minor repairs besides regular maintenance and small upgrades. And I beat the heck out of it towing trailers and working out of it. Hands down one of the most economical multipurpose vehicles ever made.
I just bought a 99 4runner with 200k miles, for $5200, in great condition. The engine hums and shifts so smooth. I got really lucky. I've always wante one of the older models
Congratulations! 99’s are a good year. Great set of options and taller rear springs. If it’s running and shifting good don’t let the miles ever scare ya. There’s tons of life left.
I got my 99 limited. One owner. Old couple that never off roaded. Garage kept. Some scratches but not a single dent or ding on any body panel. Leather not ripped. 159k miles. $7k. Purchased august of 2024. I got blessed
Got mine last year for 6500 @ 197k miles 4x4 limited first thing I did was Lbj’s ,radiator ,timing belt ,water pump etc.. didn’t need it ,but for peace of mind 😌
Just bought a very clean body, frame and all the repairs you just mentioned in the last 2 years. 3200.00 US Dol. what a find. We have receipts for almost 4000.00 in repairs from the dealer. This was a great video to watch.
I just did the wheel cylinders this weekend. The brake was spongy on the highway, you know something is off, 2 days later, it was leaking brakes at the drum. I forgot those those get bad too lol. Get the brake tool kit highly recommended, or struggle for 1 hour then goes to buy it anyway 😂
Had a 2000 sr5 that my parents bought new, i bought it off them because my dad's health reasons. Sadly I'm now driving a 5th gen(loving it), I still honestly would have loved to still have my 3rd gen, only had recalls and maintenance done. Thing would go wherever i wanted within reason
I have owned my 1999 4 runner for 22 yearsnow close to 300.000 miles, best truck I have ever had, hope to make it to 400.000 miles, see no reason not to,the truc runs like a charm.
I have a 1996 3rd gen 3.4 V6 with big lift and tyres and stainless steel exhaust. When she starts I send earthquakes, sounds like a chinook helicopter! Only 104,000 on the clock and I am in the UK where this V6 version is very, very rare! Bought mine in September 2009 for £3,500 UK pounds.
🌴 don’t give those four runners all the glory ! I’ve gotta 2002 SR5 2 WD - 3.4 it had 195,450 mile on it when I bought it Feb of 2023 for $4600 bucks, bought it just to pull a small fishing boat around it turned out to be my favorite vehicle ever wasn’t any paper work with it except and oil change sticker from somewhere in Sebring fla, and a bunch of Disney stickers on the back window , yep you got it soccer moms car, it’s as clean as a whistle, the under carriage looks like almost new, it truly is Toyota’s best vehicle, I’ve put almost 3000 miles on her it will still be going when I’m gone.
I bought my 97 4x4 328k miles in Jan 2020 for $1500, it needed work for sure buy had $2k in new suspension done right before I bought it. We bought a 99 4x4 180k miles with e-locker in Jan 2021 for $2400. It was literally mint condition inside, the grandpa that owned it used a roller and house paint to "preserve" the paint. Jan 2022 a drunk driver pulled out in front of us totaling the 4runner. Insurance paid us out $8k for it. I found another 99 4x4 sport with e-locker 270k miles for $7k, and bought the wreck back for $1k. The wreck donated it's full oak interior and e-locker axles to my 97. I just recently bought a 98 2x4 4 cylinder for $1k with a blown motor. The engine/trans/transfer case of the wreck will be going into the 2x4 truck, giving me another 4x4 v6 for basically $1k and some sweat equity. The deals come up if you don't mind putting in some work on the trucks. I tend to abuse them off-road, and as a result I've had to work on these more than any other car or truck I've owned. It's totally worth it though, as they've never failed to take me where I wanted to go, and get me back home.
Got my '00 sr5 auto 4wd s/c. Sunfire red/topaz 2 tone. Bougjt it About 3 yrs ago at 190k. Now it had 210k and I love it. Chasing some misfires and vac leaks but i'm not giving up on it. I still plan om taking it on a 2k mile trip once it is ready to go.
We just bought a 2000 SR5 4RUNNER with a dealer installed TRD Supercharger , came with Tacoma big brakes and 17 in wheels , OME 3 inch lift , Big screen stereo with apple carplay with backup camera , Polk audio components, Amp Industry's fender flares , zero rust $8500.00 dollars and everything still works , great trucks !!! P.S. ( Starting to look like a good investment )
I just picked up a 1997 3rd gen 4runner bought new buy a grandma and sold to an older guy. The thing has 162k miles on it and the thing is all original and perfect condition. Picked it up for 6k today love it so far.
I have a 97 4Runner, it’s a manual 4banger, I got for 5000$, it’s a great first car, and the 4cyl makes it a good beginner car if you want to do your own repairs
Bought a ‘98 with 310k for $3800 almost a year ago, and that beast will outlast my dodge that only has 180k miles. It has recently become my daily because it’s fun to drive as well!
I was just Gifted a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner Limited Edition V6 3400 24-Valve, in Excellent Condition. Only costed me $4,000.00 for a new upgraded suspension, new terrain tires, fluids flushed and refilled, brakes and etc. It's not a 4×4 but it's Excellently clean
They have a deceptively large cargo area with the back seat folded down. Bought a used washer and dryer and planned on making two trips to get them home. We were able to get them both in there and was able to shut the back. Rock solid vehicle and fun to drive.
For the most part. I’m 6’1”, so I have to sleep diagonally. If the back seat bottom part is out, I fit just fine. My sleep platform sits over the seat bottoms so I do fit.
Thank you! I’m late to reply to this.. but it’s the ARB 3423020. It was made for the same generation Tacoma. You have to do some custom work to fit it, but it’s worth it.
I waited and searched, waited and searched. I just bought my 2002 4Runner with 101K miles on it. Frame is good, vehicle is clean. He's right, just keep looking. I'm going to proactively do the radiator and timing belt/water pump. Feel blessed!
@@johnr7717 Thanks! In all the research that I've done, I haven't seen that as a problem. Have you found that it is something reaching like the radiator or lower ball joint issues?
Picked up an 02 for $2,500. it has some surface rust, but the thing is still solid. Changing out cv axles to longer travel axles and doing timing belt & water pump as well
I have a 2000 4Runner V-6 4WD that my ex-wife bought new and I bought it from her in 2020 for $3500 with 193K miles. She took pristine care of this vehicle. I put a Bilstien/OME 2" lift, Falken Wildpeak 285/70/17"s, 17"x8.5" Level 8 MK6 wheels, SPC adjustable upper control arms, new lower ball joints, and a front diff drop. I get compliments on it all the time. My daughter and I drove it from KY to Colorado in 2021 and went all over the Alpine loop trails near Telluride, Ouray and Silverton. This thing crawled over everything in it's path. It has 250K miles now, does not burn any oil, has no leaks and is my daily driver. I will keep it until either I die, or it dies....my money is on the 4Runner. My vehicle prior to this was a 2002 Tacoma V-6 that I sold to my nephew and it has 300K miles on it now. If you maintain them and don't abuse them, they will run forever.
That’s awesome! Great deal too! My wife and I have a goal to travel to all 50 states by the time we’re 40, we have 18 left and Colorado is one of them. I had a few buddies take the trip to do the Alpine Loop last year and it looks incredible! These 4Runners are built like tanks! Enjoy the miles.
@@AdventuresWithSmitty The San Juan mountains of CO are absolutely breathtaking....(and I've been to Swiss Alps). The Alpine loop is some of the best trails in the world...also some are terrifying...(Black Bear Pass...experienced drivers only). It is certainly worth the trip. We went in late July/early August and it was crowded. Earlier than that and there can still be snow blocking the trails in June if it was a snowy winter. Maybe September might be better after school has started and before winter sets in. I highly recommend it!
My folks bought a 97 new. My mom was going to trade it in for a couple hundred bucks toward a new car. Of course I found the nicest most persuasive way to make sure that didn’t happen. I’ve been driving it for about 6 years now. I just hit 300k and it’s still going strong. Living deep in NorCal mountains, easy. North Dakota winter pfft, no problem. Death Valley? May as well been a suburb neighbourhood.
I’ve keep hearing that about these 4Runners. People will sell/trade for a new car to someone they know. That person will keep the 4Runner longer than the car the person traded it for.
It’s may 2024 and I just bought a 1996 4runner v6 4x4 limited in Los Angeles with leather interior, 176k miles and that beautiful 2tone sunfire red pearl with silver bottom. Got it with a new radiator and tires and it an auto with the factory E-lock for the rear. Guy was asking 7k and he let it got for $5,700… I had to bring my kids with me to make him feel bad lol
I just picked up a 2001 Limited last week with 221k on her. Needed a couple small things but other wise made the 70 mile drive home from Long Island . Picked her up for $3500
2024- I just managed to find my 3rd gen, 140k, grandma kept 4 runner for under 10 grand. I mean total service history, Connecticut kept, 140k in 24 years…. It will never leave my possesion
I'm in the UK and we had to import these from Japan as the 4runner was never sold here. Mine is 1996 and called "a Surf". It has the 3.0l KZN185 engine (diesel) which is a real tough lump. I have to import all my mods from the US as all we seem to have here is Landrover, landrover, landrover, yawn, landrover..... Interestingly, an old 3rd gen Surf are not so expensive here.
Bought a used 2002 ( in 2012) in Arizona at 98,000 miles from the dealer's mechanic... Wonderful vehicle and thought I'd grow old with it. Fast forward to last week where I find out it's a California car and my catalytic converters and evap canister are going at 297,000 miles... NOT a cheap fix but I'll likely buy another one, maybe 2018/2019
I had a Jeep TJ, gmc duramax, Benz glk350(9years) from 28,000 mi to 210,000mi. But my 3rd gen is the absolute best vehicle I’ve owned no question about it.
If it only has 46,000 miles… I definitely would. Mileage isn’t a factor at that point, but just the age of the vehicle. The newest 3rd gens are over 20 years old now. I would check the radiator, radiator hoses, belts, etc. Anything that can age and get brittle over time.
Beautiful 4runner, but get that rear quarter bumper fixed, and she'll be good as new😂 love my 2016 4runner trail with kdss. She's my overland and daily driver, and I wouldn't want anything else. And she's close to show room condition. Great video, and keep up the good work. Be safe out there.
Haha. I know what you mean! Long story short, I was rear ended and pushed into another car in front of me at a red light. The ARB bumper saved the engine bay and I was able to drive away. Insurance totaled it, I bought it back, and found another gold 4Runner in a junk yard. Grabbed the hood, hatch, and few other bits from it. Only part left to replace is the bumper! I appreciate the nice comments! Much more coming soon.
Just bought a 99 5 speed, 4 cylinder 4wd 3rd gen, even though this truck is almost a base model I’m still ecstatic to get my hands on a 3rd gen, especially a manual.
Tennessee has always been high for Toyotas with all the outdoor recreation, but pre-94 pickups are going for INSANE money here right now. Basically if it’s put together in one piece it’s $10k.
so i picked up a 3rd gen 4runner with 125k with the oil plug stripped out and the rear diff leaking on account of rust suspension completely destroyed so i did a complete restoration on every mechanical problem now it being 4 years and supercharger equipped its way more reliable than my father's inlaw chevy colorado with the offroad package lol had to get him unstuck 3 times trailing helps i have front and rear and center locking diffs now with 165k on it its just broken in
I really love your build. I did a running board delete and want a roof rack now. Do you like just having an arb bumper on the front or would you like one on the back too? I'm trying to slowly build a rig
I’m crazy late to reply to this.. but thank you! I love the ARB bumper. I’m going to make another video about it, but I was in an accident where I was rear ended and pushed into another vehicle. The ARB bumper saved the 4Runner. I was able to drive it home. So it’s sturdy, plus is cool. Haha. A rear swing out tire carrier is on my wishlist. I hear they’re heavy… but I still want one. Haha.
These are reliable cars indeed. Everybody might have already heard about the TopGear episode with the Hilux, but there is a channel called Redline Ranch and he does a similar test on a sweet looking 3rd Gen. Don't watch it if you're sensitively against the abusing of valuable stuff but he does an ok job at showing how durable the 4Runner is. There's also a channel called Sand Patrol and while he doesn't break his 4Runners (yea, he's got a couple or more), he drives them hard and you can still see how strong these cars are.
I'm interested to know when price on the 3rd Gen 4Runner started going up. I have a 2000 4Runner SR5 4WD. I bought it in Florida late 2018 with 224k miles bone stock and paid $2700. Was I just lucky? Mechanically, engine and trans ran perfect. Still does today at 290k miles. Needed mostly cosmetic work on the interior which I ended up replacing entire interior from a junkyard doner. Front/rear seats and door panels cost me $300. Previous owner was a heavy smoker.
Yea my front seats need some attention soon, but the rest is still pretty good. 2020 was wild for used car prices. New cars were put on hold with chip shortages and lockdowns. So without the inventory of newer cars, older cars became more sought after and more valuable. I think that is when the biggest bump came. And with uncertainty during that time people were holding onto their cash more and buying used cars. Also during this time people were wanting to get to the outdoors, explore, go camping, escape the cities, etc. Camping industries saw a huge bump. Older Toyotas still carry that “Let’s Go Places” motto, so it could be another factor of then being so popular. Maybe a small percentage.
Looked for a few years for a 3rd gen upgrade from an Outback. I saw prices up to $ 30,000. I gave up when a good friend passed on his 4th gen to me. Keep it the family so to speak. Still wish i scored a 3rd gen. At least the 4th gen flys under the radar a bit.
just bought 1999 that appears to be rare, cloth, 4x4, elocker, manual, super charger, pristine no rust. I am stunned how well it drives. I have friends that have older jeep wranglers and there is no comparison. Why would anyone want a Jeep when at a similar price you can get a 4runner?
That sounds like a sweet 4Runner. 99 is a great year too, it got the best mix of features throughout the years. I know what you mean though. No soft top to worry about, death wobble, plastic interior, etc.
I’m seeing 2001 4Runner with lift kit, all around steel bumper, clean title, 148k, wheels tires super clean 4x4 for 18k. That was negotiated from 24k. Is that a good deal?
I have a 98 limited that i love. best vehicle i ever owned. only thing that kills these is rust so do check the frame and other areas under the car very carefully. some people try to hide it with paint. if its a rust belt car its very likely rusted out.
My 98 Ltd has 525K on it now. Original drivetrain. The only thing I do not like is where they put the darn oil filter lol. Yeah , today was oil change day. I've always ran synth engine oil and synth trans fluid. 3rd Gens are the best !!!
I feel I got lucky when I bought my much maligned 4th Gen 4Runner, with 150K miles on it, for $12.5K, in 2021. It's a 2008, Urban Runner, so I call it the 25th anniversary edition... LOL! A phenomenal vehicle that ticks all the boxes and more for me. A plus is it has a lot of the same components as the FJ and 5th Gens. So, some parts I can get either brand new from the dealer, if I wanted, or go to many aftermarket retailers! There are only 3 times that I love my 4Runner. When it's, Super Clean, Absolutely Filthy, or when it's Wet! Otherwise I just like it a whole lot!
Haha. If you had 25th Anniversary Edition ion decals made it would confuse so many people. I think the Land Cruiser had a 25th Anniversary Edition. I want to make a 4th gen 4Runner video too. People often overlook them, but they’re still awesome.
@SPFAdventures Yeah, for whatever reason, I get more crap from the other generation 4Runner owners than Jeep owners! Even though or maybe because it was the only gen with the V8?! 🤷🏾♂️ Now I'm going to go to Toyota's parts site and see if they have a 25th anniversary badge... LOL!
Kinda crazy long story made short, I got totaled in a 2008 Toyota Prius base 6 weeks ago and got no insurance payout, BUT... I was just given a 2002 4Runner Limited with 269k miles. Some people keep referring to it as "old" and "beat up." I look at the lack of frame rust and see a truck that's gonna last another 10+ years and is definitely worth putting money into. I don't think I'll be getting rid of it anytime soon. It still amazes me how much nicer this car is IMO than my Prius which was 6 years newer...
Nice. It should for many miles to go. One small detail but I always found it funny. My 2002 4Runner has the button on the AC to show the outside temperature. My wife used to drive a 2015 Nissan and it didn’t have that feature. Lol. She would always say that it was so many years newer but didn’t have that. Like I said it’s a small thing, but overall they’re amazing vehicles.
One owner here of 2000 Limited. Purchased new with 6-miles and now up to ~240K. The only complaint I have is the 3.4 is so slow by today's standards. I really have to stand on the gas pedal when entering the freeway. While slow, the engine is also bullet-proof. I love my 4Runner and will never part with it.
Help advice please... I'm about to go look at private party selling 1999 limited 4x4 automatic tomorrow asking price 3,000 firm with 290,000 miles Any advice helpful They say everything works perfectly
I'm literally driving Miss Daisy (aka Mom) in her original from the showroom floor 98 sr5 limited edition unit, it just turned 100thousand KILOMETERS, and has never been parked on the street overnight. So it's not a surprise that I'm always approached at the pump by offers to buy it. Nope, it's my inheritance. ❤
The remote on that car was in my pocket when I was swimming in the beach and nothing happing to it water didn’t get inside I was so shocked. Toyota for ever my friend
19 years later still rocking my 2000 5-speed e-locked supercharged 3rd gen. Lots of vehicles have come in and out of my garage...this is the one that has never left.
That’s incredible. If you don’t mind me asking, why do you think you’ve kept it all this time? I’ve had mine 7 years, but 19 is impressive.
@@AdventuresWithSmitty In the past couple of years I have tried to replace it because I wanted a vehicle with modern safety tech. I’ve been seeing that e locker what is that? And wait that thing came stock supercharged? If so I’m looking for one asap lol
let my buy that supercharger 😅
i thought if you supercharged your runner youd lessen the life of the engine
I have a 2000 4runner. My dad was the original owner, he had it until he passed in 2018. I couldn’t sell it as it was in mint condition and only had 90,000 miles, so I kept it as a second car. I still have it, it now has 105,000 miles. Still mint. No rust, paint and interior look new. I love my 4runner, I’ll never sell it.
Sounds beautiful.
Dad had good taste, God rest his soul.
He definitely had good taste. I’m sorry for your loss. Enjoy the 4Runner!
Thanks
I’d rather buy a pickup truck than ugly Toyota design SUVs
Lost my 3rd gen to an inattentive driver, that vehicle will always hold a special space in my heart. Truly an awesome vehicle.
they going down a lot now. selling for 5k to 8k now
They're never going to be a collectors item.
Right on! That sounds like a sweet setup! They’re great vehicles.
Be ready for your CV boots to split once you lift it.
@@TheSaturnV Should be fine if hes only getting a 2inch
Score!
I have a ‘96 4x4 SR5. Original transmission, original engine. 400k+ miles, runs like a champ.
Great job on the video, thanks for putting it
You still have it? And how’s it running?
@@diablodan1459 yes I still have it, she runs like a top. Got a few suspension issues but that's to be expected with the mileage but as far as drivetrain and engine goes, she purrs..

I'm still driving my 88 Toyota 4×4 truck with camper shell. You nailed it, maintenance & preventive maintenance is the key! And I use mine for exploring & camping.
I love those trucks. Haha. Hang onto it!
Maintenance and ball joints
Why does it have to be 4 wheel drive? How often do you actually use it? I would be fine with a 2 wheel drive.
@@outdooradventures1361 2 wd will only take you so far, you need 4x4 if it’s 2wd it’s a 2runner not 4runner

That’s crazy low miles. Haha. Enjoy it!!
Just picked up a rust free 2000 limited 160k miles with the rear diff lock for $11k, owned by a mechanic so 99% of the maintenance needed was already done. I love it

Picking up a 2001 sr5 145k miles for 12k this week. Super excited
@@ModelBuilders Nice! 145,000 miles is for sure low miles. Haha. Enjoy!
Awesome! Back around 2016 they were still more expensive as other vehicles their age, but were a bargain with the longevity.
Nice truck! I’m really enjoying my 2002 4Runner with about 189,000 miles, it’s just getting broken in!!
Sweet! You’ve got many years ahead of you. It’s getting harder to find 3rd gens with less than 200,000 miles!
I appreciate it!
Drive it slow or else, transmission problems and pink milkshake radiator will appear
That’s awesome. I bet the V6 is rare. I honestly just assumed they were all diesels in the UK. Enjoy!
Just bought a 1997 2.7 toyota tacoma 4x4 with 20k on the odo. Not cheap but basically still new......drives great! Timmy C Arizona

I have a 97 4Runner, it’s a manual 4banger, I got for 5000$, it’s a great first car, and the 4cyl makes it a good beginner car if you want to do your own repairs
I bet the 4 cylinder 5 speed is a peppy combo.
These 3rd gen runners and the 1st gen tacoma prices are crazy
Bought a ‘98 with 310k for $3800 almost a year ago, and that beast will outlast my dodge that only has 180k miles. It has recently become my daily because it’s fun to drive as well!
Great vid. I have the Surf with the 3.0 Intercooled Diesel.... have had it for 12 years now, and still going strong at 314k. Definately a keeper.
These are so tempting. Haha. I’d love to get one imported to the US.
I was just Gifted a 2002 Toyota 4-Runner Limited Edition V6 3400 24-Valve, in Excellent Condition.

They have a deceptively large cargo area with the back seat folded down. Bought a used washer and dryer and planned on making two trips to get them home. We were able to get them both in there and was able to shut the back. Rock solid vehicle and fun to drive.

I waited and searched, waited and searched. I just bought my 2002 4Runner with 101K miles on it. Frame is good, vehicle is clean. He's right, just keep looking. I'm going to proactively do the radiator and timing belt/water pump. Feel blessed!
Awesome. Do the camshaft and crankshaft seals too.
@@johnr7717 Thanks! In all the research that I've done, I haven't seen that as a problem. Have you found that it is something reaching like the radiator or lower ball joint issues?

I scooped a 1999 5 speed, 3rz T4R for 3k. Rust free and under 200k miles.
That’s a steal. Haha. Congratulations!
LOL!!!!! That 1997 that sold on BaT for 17,250 on 7/13 is mine ;) so happy i picked it up!! @ 0:28
Bought mine for $500 has 236,000 runs great my favorite car I’ve owned
It’s may 2024 and I just bought a 1996 4runner v6 4x4 limited in Los Angeles with leather interior, 176k miles and that beautiful 2tone sunfire red pearl with silver bottom. I bought mine 3 weeks ago 99 with 261k for 4500. It needs some body restoration dents and scrapes but other than that it’s solid.
In 2002 I couldn't afford a 4runner so I got the Tacoma instead. Still driving good today but the 3rd gen I would consider trading for.
2001 SR5……mom gifted to me before she passed. I’ve cared for it since new. 142k on the clock…..never getting rid of it.

Picked up my “99” 4Runner for 5,500 😊 220k miles runs great
I'm looking at one that is the same year with 230k. Looks mint condition at $7500
Would you recommend replacing ball joints and timing belt at 46K miles?

Haha.
They’re amazingly capable and reliable! Toyota! 💪🏻
Definitely going to check these out. Thank you!
Yes, very lucky, especially if you have the Rear Diff Lock. 2000 was the last year that was offered in the 3rd Gen.
@@terebrate No, did not come with the locker, but I did retrofit a factory elocker I found in the junkyard.

So after him saying all those prices I'm glad I bought mine for 4500
I love mine. And my 89 4Runner too. Probably won’t be able to sell either.
Yes it does! 4th gens are still great!
just bought 1999 that appears to be rare, cloth, 4x4, elocker, manual, super charger, pristine no rust.
Totally agree. 5th gen are sexy but crazy price. My lucky find is my '99 twin stick, 4x4, tan TRD supercharger w/140k. 3rd Gen is the Best Gen :)
That is my favorite style of 4Runner
I’m seeing 2001 4Runner with lift kit, all around steel bumper, clean title, 148k, wheels tires super clean 4x4 for 18k. That was negotiated from 24k. Is that a good deal?
I have a 98 limited that i love. best vehicle i ever owned. only thing that kills these is rust so do check the frame and other areas under the car very carefully. some people try to hide it with paint. if its a rust belt car its very likely rusted out.
Good advice. A lot of times too, rust “treatment” is just painting over the rust.
My 98 Ltd has 525K on it now. Original drivetrain. The only thing I do not like is where they put the darn oil filter lol.
Yeah , today was oil change day.
I've always ran synth engine oil and synth trans fluid.
3rd Gens are the best !!!
No kidding on the oil filter. You gotta almost hug the driver side tire to reach it from the side.
Great video. Love my 97 sr5 4R
Thank you!
I love my 96 5 speed rear diff lock 4runner.
Thing is amazing
That’s a winning combo 👆
Now I'm going to go to Toyota's parts site and see if they have a 25th anniversary badge...
I got one for sale now .$10 k with 95+k miles ,1999 2WD,original owner,New stater ,runs great.I am here in Camarillo CA,
Hahahahahahaha
Im stuck on a hard decition because ive alwasy wanted a 4runner but again im looking at a 2010 rav4 4wd as well not sure which one to get.
I can attest to that. Haha. I’m just curious, why do you think you’ve kept it this long? Owning since new is amazing.
Help advice please...
I'm about to go look at private party selling 1999 limited 4x4 automatic tomorrow asking price 3,000 firm with 290,000 miles
Any advice helpful
They say everything works perfectly
99 4runner limited, factory supercharger 180k, runs like a dream!
Classified 'antique' yet?
Maybe an antique. Haha. I’ve heard someone call it a “future classic.”
I HAVE BOTH, LOVE BOTH!
That sounds like a time capsule. Enjoy!
I’m looking at a 2001 2WD 4Runner with 165k miles. Guy wants 7k. Is that reasonable. Maintenance is flawless but I don’t know what it’s truly worth.
I love my 1999 4runner limited edition best .hands down
My 2002 4runner has 120k miles and it’s like new. Engine super quiet. Wouldn’t sell it. Can’t buy a gem any more.
I believe that the 4Runner is the best vehicle ever made.
Still have my 97 with the 5 speed, 170k on it
The remote on that car was in my pocket when I was swimming in the beach and nothing happing to it water didn’t get inside I was so shocked. Toyota for ever my friend
