  • We've been using the two highest image quality digital cameras for about 8 months in the real world, so this is a long-term review comparison:
    * Nikon D850 (sdp.io/d850) - a 45 megapixel DSLR
    * Sony a7R III (sdp.io/a7r3) - a 42 megapixel mirrorless camera
    In this video review, we compare them for Image Quality and Color, Autofocus (AF), frames per second (FPS), durability/reliability/dependability, the viewfinder (optical vs electronic viewfinder/EVF), battery life, handling and usability, Wi-Fi, silent shutter, video recording, timelapses, lenses, and price.

    I'm sticking with Nikon, not because of any brand snobbery. I think all brands are putting out great cameras these days. I just have so much invested in Nikon glass. And I'm confident in the durability of the D850.

      R John Mitchell I'm the same way with Canon. Our DSLR take great pics. I'm gonna wait a bit to see what they offer in mirrorless. If in two years Canon hasn't stepped up I might sell my gear and switch.

      Honestly no reason to change because of new bodies. I went with Sony for affordability and I'm getting back into photography after accidently destroying my last dslr. Won't talk about that hahaha. But Nikon will release a competitive mirrorless and the fight will continue.

    • @blahjovic
      @blahjovic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The trouble with the glass investment argument is the upcoming mount change and the announcement of new lenses. I’ve started selling my Nikon lenses and bodies. I first started with the financial crisis and I just don’t see a mount change helping anything. In fact, if Nikon needs money then they need you to buy new versions of the lenses you already own. The best way to do that is to make the old version obsolete.

      Yeah and honestly, always having a battery charger in your bag isn't that difficult.

    • @bradleyhurley6755
      @bradleyhurley6755 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Nikon clearly wins in the situation where you have no way to possible charge the device. However, Sony is better if you forget the charger because most people already have a USB cord in their car so the Sony can take infinitely more pictures than the Nikon in that situation. So if you are stranded with no access to your car or a battery bank, Nikon wins. In any other case, Sony is the clear winner. Weddings is a toss up. While having a longer lasting single battery would be beneficial, the fact you can charge the camera battery from a USB power bank, does give you the option of charging the camera while the wedding is happening, especially if you have a second camera, so in the unfortunate event the battery does die and you didn't have a replacement, you can probably rescue yourself (worse case you have to find someone with a charger), however once the Nikon battery dies, you are out of luck unless you have the specific charger, and then you can't charge for a moment, take your needed shot and continue to charge, you are basically going to be out of commission until the battery gets charged enough to allow you to move about, and not quickly die.

When travelling I need a USB charger for charging my phone and heaps of other stuff (headphones, flashlight, action cam, drone remote, powerbanks, etc). I have 6 powerbanks, it would be so great if my D-SLR could be charged from them. This will be a feature I will consider when buying my next new camera!

  • @billykwong

    Sony owner here, but I feel the A7RIII and D850 are closer than the comparison made it out to be because the D850 won in categories that generally people put more weight in: lenses and handling/ergonomics. Those categories, along with image quality which the two cameras tied for, are probably the three most important factors people look for in a new camera. Also, if you're strictly talking about battery life and not charging features (features should be it's own category in my opinion), the D850 should have won that category although battery life isn't an issue on either camera. Both are great cameras and I went with the Sony personally, but it's not a slam dunk win for the A7RIII just because it got more check marks in this comparison.

    One thing to consider is that Nikon has a much better range of cheaper, entry-level cameras. While the d850 and the a7R are both very similar cameras, they're both out of the price range of the 'first' camera for a lot of people. Even if the a7R has a slight edge in some respects, it's probably not enough to make a lot of people who have been shooting with Nikon for years to jump ship and get a whole new kit.
    In other words these are both pro level cameras with pro prices, but the Sony has the added cost of having to start a whole new lens collection, while the Nikon can slide right into your existing kit that you've slowly built up over time.

      Tobias Yoder Evf vs ovf is matter of preference but I dont thing calling evf better is fair judgement. Morten hilmer ( a professional wildlife photographer) dont like evf and he always uses dslr and I rarely under or over expose my photograph using my dslr.

    • @avinashrai11141
      @avinashrai11141 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Most of the time wildlife photographers waits hours and hours for a single shot looking through OVF of dslr without any concern but it is impossible to do same looking through Evf because
      1.looking on evf may cause eye strain.
      2. Battery may die before the real moment.
      3. Even if battery keeps up with the time it is highly possible that heat produced by sensor and electronic may force camera to shut down.
      4. Hot sensor always produces more noise.
      5. Direct beam of strong laser and long exposure to very bright sunlight can also damage sensor.
      All above points are 100% fact not my opinion.

      If you do that with the a7R III, you can digitally zoom the EVF for even more range. And the battery will literally go all day; it's not an issue.

      Oh it probably is. I use a D800 as my primary camera and it's still mind-blowing to me how good the overall image quality and functionality is. I haven't actually used a D800 (Edit: I mean D850), but it's 2 "generations" ahead of that so it's gotta be fantastic. I can see myself finally getting another Nikon DSLR when they inevitably release the "D860" or whatever the successor is to the D850. I am excited to see what they do with their first "pro" mirrorless camera though. Even if I don't get it it is exciting to see them do new things.

    Yes, Chelsea, you DO matter! Next time have two score cards; it will make clear that everyone has their own preferences even when owning both. Sony would have still had more "X's" by Chelsea, but it would have been a narrower margin.
    I don't own a Nikon (well that's not true, I own an N90 and N90s) so I'll qualify by saying I don't own a Nikon DSLR. In a way it did sound like Sony sponsored this vid (not both companies) but I've seen enough of your channel to know you're telling it is as you see it and it's not from being promoted one way or the other. Since the comparison was fair, that Sony kept getting "X's" over Nikon's flagship is something that Nikon and Canon should closely pay attention to. I agree with most of your assessments (see below). You guys are far more fair than the haters(?) give credit for.
    I disagree with Tony! RE the battery thing: I have Sony and Canon. I don't take a lot of pix, relatively speaking. I can go a month or two before recharging the batteries in my 5Ds, but with a caveat; I do have a battery grip and have two batteries in it. With the Sony cameras that's just not the case. I always use a freshly charged battery every time. I've not done the troubleshooting, but it seems if the Sony camera goes to sleep and is inadvertently left on, I can look forward to a drained battery in days. I'd really have to do a test to confirm, but I have picked up the A7s thinking it had 70% or 80% charge left, then a couple days later it's down to around 20% or 30%. So when Chelsea said she can go a couple days without a a charge, I agree (though it's weeks or months for me). I would have easily given the check mark to the Nikon in this case.
    Fun stuff. Been watching you guys for many years now.

  • @Hangs4Fun

    First if you are going to be purchasing either of these two cameras let me say congratulations. Either way you can take the camera out of the equation as to why you got a bad shoot. They are both phenomenal bodies!
    For me, I primarily shoot in deep wilderness so overall kit size and weight was most important. I bring the
    Sony a7R3 with 16-35GM and 100-400GM (1.4x TC sometimes). I do landscape, wildlife, and astro with this.
    Only reservations I had was dust/water, but I came up with a simple solution there.
    Then there days like today where I'm doing street photography (just for fun). I just grabbed my a7R3 pair it with either the 50 f/1.8 or 28 f/2. That makes for such a small and light package and doesnt get people intimidated.
    As for the feel of the camera in my hands (I have large hands). For portrait and long video shooting I use my Sony battery grip extender. For landscapes and wildlife I use RRS L bracket. But for all other cases (like street) I use the Meike extended grip. At only $53 on Amazon it gives you a place for your pinky and has a built in arca plate on the bottom as well as a 1/4x20. I did have to drill a hole for my Peak Design anchor. But for little weight you can give your right hand a ton of stability and really completes the feel of the camera...
    Perhaps in a few years when Nikon has built and perfected their high res full frame mirrorless offering and get a bunch of new key lenses built on the new mirrorless mount I will reconsider.

      I have honest use cases where Canon still works best for me. I use my 600 with strobes in continuous high frequently, Sony don't offer a 600 and don't have very fast frame rates with flash. 10fps is ok, but 14 with my 1DXII is way more than 10. Nikon is close with the D5 and 12fps, but I dislike the image look overall sometimes and in DR especially. The D850 is also only 9FPS. I just make a point to get close enough and my 1DXII slays the game.

    • @sergioserramusic
      @sergioserramusic 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I agree with you, but as far as image quality Canon is a little behind, especially in the price range in which the A73 is. Also remember that the D850 is a high MP camera, way higher than the 1DXII’s. Though, I still prefer Canon and the 1DXII is a beast.

      I'm mad too. How can the Sony win the battery section. The Nikon takes close to three times the pictures 1840 vs 650, take two batteries and you're right for a week, or more.
      IBIS sucks for video too, so imo the D850 wins the stabilization section, and also the video (because Nikon doesn't suck like Sony does).
      So there you have it.
      D850 = 8.
      Sony junk = 5, and minus another 1 because it's a Sony!
      Edit* Disclaimer. I own several Nikon cameras and a range of lenses.

      Agreed. Lenses, reliability and handling are far more important. When a average sized woman and a tall man both say the handling is better, that is saying a lot.
      Lenses, well there is no photography without them.
      I believe pricing and reliability go hand in hand. If budget is not an issue for you the whole comparison is pointless. However, if you have to save for the camera, (That's most of us, I think.) reliability is the ball game. So Nikon is less expensive and will last longer. That is Value.
      The whole charging bit is a Tony thing. There are not many circumstances where charging is gonna be an issue, and if it is, there will also be a reliability issue and Nikon won there.
      Video: Buy a Canon or Panasonic.
      Every other category is either tied, depends on what you need it for, or personal taste.

    A question about the third camera in this great comparison: What format/focal length/aperture are you recording with? Specifically, what’s the thinking behind such a shallow DoF that the cameras and whiteboard are only in focus when held against your chests? (I feel for the poor face-tracking AF, who seems to have a minor nervous breakdown whenever one of you leans in a few inches closer than the other!) In this situation, is closing down a few stops, and manually front-focusing an option for expanding near DoF while keeping the creamy background separation? Or is 4K just so unforgiving that even at f4 or f5.6, you’re best off choosing an eye and holding on for dear life? As a stills photog curious about video “best practice,” I’d love a look behind the scenes at how you make these framing/focusing choices. Thanks for all you do!

    Sony don’t have ISO 64 which is Nikon exclusive feature , and it has impact on actual shooting.
    Nikon misses Flat profiles in video
    That is very limiting serious video work.
    Sony has a Pixel Shift mode.

    I wish you could talk more about the image quality, or to more precise, the color science and overall look of the images. Are they similar? Skin tones are ok in both? Has Sony its particular tint in portraits vs the pleasant canon look? Thanks in advance

    I don't know what it is, but your video looks so damn awesome, the colors and the light is phenomenal!!! Did u use extra light or sunlight or standard home lighting?! And u guys brought be even further to ho out and spend all my hard saved money on the A7riii. Are there going to be any workshops soon, especially near europe (Germany)?

    I switched from Sony to Nikon just for the lenses! I got a used d750 with a Tamron 24-70 and 70-200 g1 lenses for $2400 TOTAL! Sony is great but if I wanted an A7iii with a 24-70 and 70-200 2.8 I'm looking at 6 grand! Lenses are way more important for me and live view isn't a deal braker for me. Let's see how Nikon mirrorless goes!

      moo no af issues here! Fast and accurate for weddings and wildlife! And yes! Nikkor zooms are expensive but there's no 24-70 and 70-200 that cheap for the Sony system! 28-75 is ok but no 70-200 yet

      moo and even if I was a pixel peeper, the dxomark scores for both lenses are the highest in class!

      You could have used those same lenses on the Sony with an adaptor!

      Yeah but you will never get the same as native performance, especially with Nikon. My point is just mainly for native lenses, there's more budget options for DSLRs

      Yup me too... just traded in ALL Nikon gear to B&H... took the funds and bought new Sony glass with.. Even with Nikon announcing it's new mirrorless would still need new Nikon mirrorless glass... or go with some "native" adapter.... nope... after 30 years goodbye Nikon not looking back at all...

      Dub Glad you're happy with your burger. Can you do us a burger comparison so we all know which burgers are best? Did you have fries too? I prefer slightly more chunky fries to skinny ones

      People are more likely to complain about a bad product that they are to praise a good product. So every time I see a post where someone has switched and they are really happy with Sony that actually holds a lot of weight.

    What adapter do you recommend so I can use my Canon lenses on the Sony A7R lll until I get Sony lenses? Which Sony lens do you recommend to begin with for travel etc? Thanks!

    THIS was a insightful comparison.. I'm on the cusp of big decision on which system to buy and had landed on these two cameras as my top picks. What I learned from you is that a) at a certain point the DXO numbers quantitative stats become largely irrelevant and the meaningful differences are mostly subjective, and b) I will need to rent these two cameras and try them out and make a decision based on those same subjective personal impressions. Well done!
