    • @jerodelsur
      @jerodelsur 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think that are their perspectives, in this case, evaluated by his experience using these cameras.
      With respect, youtube is full of scientific deeper reviews that give only numbers, so I appreciate listening subjective opinions, that allow oneself to draw our conclusions. The color issue for me is the most relevant for choosing a camera, but what can be a good color experience for me, for the others can be the worst. (First time I see someone preferring Sony colors, for me that was interesting about this review and I appreciate the honesty of saying it when everyone speaks in the opposite way). With the raw files I think the decision can be more easy.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, it's definitely a trade off between keeping things interesting and going deeper in to tests on the review side. But if you check out the individual reviews for each of the 3 cameras, I think you will find more detailed info! Thanks for watching though and for the insight. For example, we didn't talk about pixel shift on the A7RIII but you can find the test and resulting image on the A7RIII review as well as more low light testing and DR tests.

    at 17:34, it's really showing Canon extra magenta tone on the white shirt, the Sony's white is better. This is really good review from real working photographers, not like bunch of other youtubers sitting indoor and talking about specs, real life hands on reviews like this are always great and fun to watch! For me personally, I still use Canon bodies for Wedding (zoom lenses) and wildlife/adventure where more lens options are available and they can get beaten up by weather, I use Sony for videos and prime zeiss / GM lenses because it offers IBIS!

    6:20 The eye autofocus probably focused on flowers because you are Using it by holding a middle button where the control wheel is. What happens when you press the shutter button, your finger stops holding eye AF button, and focus goes to standard mode. Thats why there is a Focus Lock button on lenses, to set the Eye AF there. I was shooting through flowers today and for the past 2 years with eye AF, NEVER EVER camera focused on something else. EYE AF Cant focus on sometheng else except the eye. You have to hold AF Lock to the end, after the pic taken

    I switched back from Sony to Nikon D850 (was Nikon shooter for ages before) because of more defects in Sony cameras and lenses I ever thought could have happened. Probably I just wasn't that lucky.
    IQ on any of these cameras can be great and I am convinced that the photographer in most cases is the limiting factor😉 and not the camera. I am with you that the AF button of the D850 is poorly placed and would be great if it were possible to place it somewhere else via firmware update. I helped myself with programming the FN1 with AF-area mode + AF On to switch from the standard single point AF. I almost never shoot videos therefore the only real weak point AF in live view is of no importance to me. I adjusted the color balance of the monitor one to the right and one down and am very happy with the colors.
    Yes and I like your reviews as you know to shoot good pics which is far from being standard among all the wannabe bloggers.
    Ernst

    A helpful round-up. This is a tough decision. An investment really. It isn’t just about the best camera, you have to take the lens ecosystem into account. (As well as company history - to consider what they might do in the future) So the more user and real world experience I can digest, the better. Thanks for the review.

    we are so lucky with the choices we have today, all of these cameras are superb, way beyond anything we ever dreamed of, and it just gets better and better year after year. I used to be Canon, but changed last year to Olympus for form factor and Sony for hi-res dynamic range photography. so happy with my gear :-)

  • @CanadianArchivist
    @CanadianArchivist 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I’ve seen other channels discuss these cameras. But this is the first one I’ve seen that has given examples and critiques without just talking about it and being impartial.
    I do have film photography background. In February 2017 I received an entry level Nikon as a gift, and purchased speedlites, a zoom lens and other equipment. A month ago after a year of use, and careful research, i bought a Nikkor 50mm 1.8G Prime lens which works with both APS-C and full frame. It is phenomenal. If I thought about giving my son my existing body and use the new lens with a new Nikon body or switch to Sony or Canon. Now that I’ve seen this comparison, I will stick with Nikon. I shoot minor hockey photographs. The D85O would be a great choice considering the dynamic range and frame rate, and other features that are not in my existing camera. The Nikon system is the best choice for me.

    Excellently done testing. I shoot the Nikon D850 and have large hands, so the Sony is out of the equation. Just this afternoon I had one in my hands at the camera store and my middle finger gets crushed between the hand grip and the lens. It's too darned small. The Canon? It has all the features that should have gone into the 5D3 five years ago. The photo quality I'm getting from my Nikon D850 is astonishing. Portrait have a 3D look to them that the others can't produce. Thanks guys.

    Best review I've seen so far. Thanks for the quality of the content. You won a subscriber ;)
    If you were starting from 0 and the weight of the camera was not a relevant factor -because of the weight/size of the lenses- would you also choose Sony for the final image? You think that with the MC 11 adapter or the Metabones we will lose too much in the Sony Body? (I read that Sigma is coming soon with native lenses for Sony, but I find interesting to have lenses with the adaptor because we never know if in the future Canon will come back again. (Or in the case we use different bodies for different jobs).
    When will you have available the raw files?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Appreciate that!!! Awesome to have you as a sub. I would definitely pick Sony if live view means anything to you. It's great for shooting over your head, low to the ground, on tripods, or for shooting video.
      If I was starting from scratch, I'd get all native Sony lenses unless you shoot mostly landscape or non moving images. The adapters work and the Sigma lenses/adapters are certainly the best but it's not nearly as quick and reliable as Sony glass for autofocus. Should have the RAW files up later tonight!

    Another photographer noted a focus problem with A7r3and 85f1.4. A Sony tech cued him to a new firmware upgrade for the camera and a firmware upgrade for the lens which took care of the problem. Afterwards, he said the focus was quicker and spot on, keeping in mind that the 85mm has a lot of glass in it and it will always focus slower than the 24-70 or 70-200 GMs.

    Great talk guys! Loved the b-roll in the field :) Which camera & lens was used there?
    As for the rest, I think that nowadays technology has reached a level which enables us to do unbelievable things. So it all comes down to personal preferences and specific use.

    Very nice review guys! Very tough decision you put me on! I was deciding between mk iv and sony R iii for weddings ( being a canon shooter) listening your adapter issues with Sony, still do you think I can do it for weddings?

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Mike! I would definitely have a tough time shooting adapters for a wedding. I've found the AF to be less reliable although it is definitely improving. But I would be absolutely fine taking an RIII to a wedding. However, reliability has been less than stellar so far and I've heard of firmware updates messing things up so just an FYI. Plus it is very advanced and sometimes changing one setting will affect 3 other things so make sure you know the camera. We have had no issues so far with the A7RIII.

    Wonderful Unbiased video! I was on the fence about a picture with no editing and no guessing on blurr during one shot opportunities like weddings... you can count on Sony because what you shoot is what you get(mirrorless advantage). I'm currently a Canon 70D user of 3 years and seriously about to make the jump to full frame. I'm pretty sure I'm leaning toward the Sony A7 III (much better reviews than the R for the price). Thanks and please do a review on the Sony A7r3 vs. the A7 3

    Thank you for yet another great video and review, guys :)
    I have the Sony A7RIII, and a lot of Canon L glass. So far, I have only one Sony lens, the new 24-105/4. But the Canon glass works great with Sony using the latest Metabones V adapter. It is a game changer. I tried out the IV version with the A7RII last year, but not happy with that. The new version V has no focus issues with any of my Canon glass (except for the 100 macro in macro mode, but that I focus manually anyway) on the A7RIII , and you also get proper metadata from the lens, meaning the actual lens name comes up in Lightroom metadata, and you can use Canon lens profiles in LR - you could not do that with the version IV. Tracking sports with the Canon 100-400 is a breeze with the Sony/Metabones V.
    I will highly recommend to get the battery grip for the Sony, though. The camera is just too small to hold comfortably without the grip, especially with longer lenses, but makes a big difference also with smaller size lenses. Holding the camera simply becomes more relaxed and sturdy with the battery grip on.
    I tried out the Canon 5D mkIV as a possible replacement for my mkIII, but I found the improvements so minor that it was just not worth the money. The Sony A7RIII just feels and performs like a modern camera, taking advantage of new technology to improve (most important) your images and your user experience. So, still very happy as a mixed Sony/Canon shooter, and will remain so, I think. Only depends on what Canon have up their sleeve :) www.canonrumors.com/more-information-about-the-new-camera-line-cr1/

    I own the a7R III, agree on the setup and Eye AF, seems like a fair review. I was a Canon user for 15 years, I sold everything and moved the the a7R III. Combinations of silent shooting, IBIS, BSI Sensor, size, EVF, and video features. I shoot with mostly primes, I have the 55mm 1.8, 35mm 2.8, 85mm 1.8 and the 24-105mm F4. I did not feel like those were that over priced. And the 35mm 2.8 on the a7R III is such a small carry around package for daily shooting.

      James, That 35mm 2.8 is one of the best street and event lens. May I ask, Is it me or when you switch to Sony. You start shooting Prime Lenses more?

    • @jamesryan1939
      @jamesryan1939 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I always did shoot prime lenses a lot, my go to on the Canon was the 35mm F2 IS, but the IBIS really shines with fast primes. If your subject is still, you can shoot crazy low light photos handheld.

      24-105 f4, or 24-70 f2.8?

    • @OrlandoMac
      @OrlandoMac 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Afonso Campos depends on what you are shooting 24-70mm if you are an event shooter or portrait pro is the better option as it is better in low light and gives you the shallow depth of field you get to separate the subject from the background, the f4 is better for a travel shooter or street photographer who doesn't want to change lenses in between, it is versatile and gives you more reach and less scary and weight than switching to a 70-200 mm which can be intimidating and heavy to carry.

    Awesome ! I like that you guys went through everything almost ! I wish you can work on another comparison about the VIDEO Quality and bitrate in depth (at least between the Nikon and Sony) plzzzzz do it even if a Short one just to see which produce better footage

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Moe! I'd definitely lean Sony for that because of the Log and oversampling. Both output 8bit and while the Nikon bitrate is higher, you could always go with an external recorder if that was an issue. I would say the A7RIII has more detail in the video than Nikon. Autofocus is always great too.

    Great video. Would love to see a Part 2 comparing the three in mixed lighting and low light AF speed/accuracy. From personal experience owning both cameras the Sony AWB does funky things with non daylight light sources whereas the Nikon d850 just seems to be spot on. A huge boon when shooting thousands of pics at an event/wedding.

    what focus mode was used on the sony, when trying to get eye-af thru the weeds? comment indicated af-s: "it will focus on the eye, but once i take the picture it goes oof"... for eye-af, it should have been shot with af-c, using back-button af, the shutter would have had no effect on the focusing... use a proper portrait lens for shooting people, like the gm85/1.4, because it's faster and it has a focus limiter that probably would have made a difference with the weeds in the field situation.
    canikon does not have anything like eye-af, for weddings and portraits and such sony is the way to go... most people pick the a9 for that tho, because the af is a bit better.

    Dan, I have warned you before. You may not realize what she is up to, but if you keep giving her face time, it will be the ‘Sally Watson’ channel. Great job. My wife uses the D850. I’m Sony, A9 and A7rii.

    I thought i'd get the A7III but realised that i have heavily invested the nikon gears. Currently using the nikkor 14-24mm2.8G, 24-70mm2.8G, 70-200mm2.8FL, 50 and 85mm. so i decided to get the Nikon D850. hopefully it was a good investment.great review also. Maybe in a couple years time ill look at a lighter body.

    Nice job! Dan, here is a tip for Nikon focus modes. I keep the camera in Continuous focus 100% of the time. Then, I have the AF-ON button set to lock focus. So, I use the shutter button to focus and take photos, then lock the focus when needed with the AF-ON button. Try it! I like it much better than switching focus modes.

    Beautiful visuals and editing - loved it. Big thumbs up for the hard work and effort you guys put in to make this video.
    Did you find that you had to keep SS very high to prevent camera shake in the big D850, with non VR lenses? IBIS in the Sony which stabilizes all lenses for both photo and video is a great feature to have.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks Binnu!!! I only used VR lenses with the D850 but I would say yes, you would need to keep the SS high. There is a large amount of shutter slap on the camera for sure...you can feel it. For landscapes though I drop it in live view and use the silent shutter so absolutely no problem with shutter slap with landscapes if you do that which is a great feature that the 5D4 doesn't have

      IBIS is poor for long lenses, which I shoot.

    • @findbinnu
      @findbinnu 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      All Sony long lenses have OSS, which takes over 3 axes, and the IBIS only stabilizes 2 axes. Yes, lens stabilization is better at long FLs, which is why Sony does put OSS in those lenses.

  • @sheepstardetail

    When you factored in the weight of systems did you also account for the extra batteries to achieve the same shots? For example, you can carry 1 battery for a D850 for an entire day, where as the Sony would need 2-3 minimum. Also G Master lenses are no lighter than the Canon and Nikon Pro glass. At 85G a pop, a A7R3 with 3 spare batteries is the same weight as a D850 with 1 battery (Sony 530 shots CIPA, D850 shots 1840 CIPA). The Sony system is lighter if you don't have a lens, and minimal after that.

    • @learningcameras
      @learningcameras  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The Sony battery life on the A7RIII is amazing. I don't care what the specs say, I rarely change batteries on the Sony and easily make it through shoots. With the Sony you do less image previewing since with the EVF you can see your image as you are shooting it! Chimping is over so that's probably why. We were using the 24-70 lenses mostly and the Nikon 24-70 F2.8 VR is over 1/2 lb heavier than the Sony 24-70 GM plus the 1/2lb difference in the camera itself is absolutely noticeable after 8hours with the camera hanging off your shoulder. Looks like the 70-200 F2.8 is closer with the nikon being .25lbs heavier
