  • In this video, I did some pier fishing with friends in San Francisco. We caught anchovies with a sabiki rig and used them as live bait. We ended up catching a keeper halibut and some shakers!

    Nice vids! Regular sf pier fishermen here. Where have all the anchoivies gone? I'd say past 2 yrs they just disappeared. They used to be hitting right on the dot at high tide. Now they're just gone. Bro where they at now? I tried all piers no luck. J&p is pricey. Thanks

    You need to be 100% sure that the halibut is 22 inches before using your "gaff treble hook". Good luck!

    You should do a video about how to cast heavy lures on baitcasters (for a beginner).

    About how long does it take to catch an anchovy thank you

    • @sf_angler
      @sf_angler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sometimes huge schools come by and we catch them 3 at a time the instant you drop into the water. Other times they are more sparse and you may catch one every few minutes. Occasionally there are no anchovies around at all, but there are always shiner perch and smelt which make good halibut bait as well. Generally there are the most anchovies in the summer months.

    • @unboxed.it.
      @unboxed.it. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sf_angler Thank You for the response but do shiner perch and smelt use the same rigs as anchovies thank you also what time is best to catch fish?

    • @sf_angler
      @sf_angler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sorry for the delayed reply. You can catch shiners and smelt on the same sabiki rig with shrimp. I don't think time of day is very important but bait fish are usually most prevalent near high tide, and the same goes for halibut.

    • @sf_angler
      @sf_angler  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for watching! I only have a 3/8" mesh cast net and the anchovies slip through it easily. It works well for smelt though. A 1/4" mesh net would work for anchovies

    What was your set up for the halibut bait

    • @sf_angler
      @sf_angler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for watching! I just used a sabiki rig tipped with shrimp to catch the anchovies. I added a short demo in the beginning of the video.

    • @sf_angler
      @sf_angler  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theholycrusader6788 I'll add a segment on it in the next live bait video. I use either a three-way swivel or a dropper loop to suspend my bait a foot or so off the bottom. Small size 2 octopus hook and 20 lb mono leader lets the anchovy swim freely.

    You 3 need a lesson how pick up your pole when you see a bite. Also stop wasting time and hook your fish!!!! Stop being amateurs!!! You guys got the bait and process down jus do better at execution and youll catch more fish. Keep the hooks in the water and keep them poles bent boys🤙🏼
