You are allowed to measure from the end of the closed mouth to the tip of the tail. Most people think that the longest point on the halibut is the middle of the tail, since it sticks out, but it is best to measure to the top of a tail, just like you would on a striper or perch. I asked a game warden about this and the said it was totally fine.
@@1lilcrazyazn yes, as log as it is a straight line between the tip of the tail and the nose. You can measure to the top of the tail just like you would on a striper
When you measure diagonally, you get a longer measurement. Simple math, look at a triangle the diagonal of the triangle will be longer than the straight portion. Also best way to measure is straight down the middle and line the end of the tape up with the tip of the tail(while still dead straight down the middle).
I don't get to catch(lol) your vids to often but i used to catch a lot in the day, your doing it right brother, they closed all my places where i grew up in in Laguna, forever . .nice vid brother
Hell yeah bro. I live in Port Hueneme and I normally fish fresh water. Today I got 8 surf perch, no keepers. You just showed me what do tomorrow...! Thanks man. I like the rig setup also. Fish and go eat. I love halibut. Thanks for posting...
Thanks for the great show and tell presentation. This is very educational for those who want to catch legal size halibut. Can't wait for your next outing, God bless young man
Have you stopped making videos for some reason? Why? Just curious, I understand other stuff is life :) Super kind of you to take the time to explain your setup and fish to those passers by. Hope to see more videos if you have the time, sad to lost the best fisherman in the area.
Excellent video; especially informative in rigging up that drop shot. I occasionally fish 3-4 different beaches in the Santa Cruz area for surf perch. Maybe sometime I should try for halibut. What months are the best for halibut? You haven't been surf videoing lately!
Gr8 job young man!! U r repping ur generation extremely well! Excellent demo of tying n using dropshot rig! The cooked fish looked awesome! I'm gonna try that dab of tomato in my lemon butter sauce! I hit the liken sub button. Every state is a lil diff, but I would def check out what is the exact legal way to measure each fish in ur state. In my state the tape measure has to be lying on a flat surface under the fish. The tip of mouth touches 0 n measures str8 line down the middle of fish to tip of the tail
nice vid bro! after i hit you up, i made my first attempt at halibut this past weekend, but i just couldnt find em lol i even fished that same stretch of beach with the same rig, i must have been way too late but maybe next time.. great catch and cook too, hali looked hella bomb!
Man, I got 25 hali’s this summer and 2 keepers. I’d trade em all for one of your top water stripers. Well maybe I’d keep one. I got all but 3 on a 8 ft Gloomis E6X rod, light tackle all the way. Nice vids man.
@@thesantacruzsurfcaster6231 ok, totally get it, but do you recommend any like beaches in general for surf fishing? New to fishing, trying to get better.
If there’s a lot of seaweed you can use a weedless ewg hook. I know a lot of people who use that as their standard setup and it seems to work. I’d say you might miss a few more bites but it’s worth it
Was thinking drop shot right off bat too. Good call. Next time you cook up the hali, fry in a smaller pan remove fish then add white wine and cook it off to get all that fishness then add your ingredients. Reduce then pour over fish. Tell us what you think.
sunset beach is a good spot for striper later in the season. metals and SP minnows are good but go with a pencil popper if its calm enough. For halibut you need to find the good spots for yourself (people don´t like it if I give them away) but super calm water is key
Love the vids man and appreciate you sharing some knowledge. This is my first surf fishing season and I am having an absolute blast, super addicted hah. Quick question, How late in the year can you usually catch striped bass? Still picking up a few here and there but was curious at what point would I be wasting my time? Tight lines...
Shane Howard If someone could please supply a link to where this is stated that would be great. I need to make sure I’m doing it right and as far as I can tell there is no problem but maybe I’m wrong
The Santa Cruz Surfcaster iphc.int/uploads/pdf/am/2018am/iphc-2018-am094-propc10.pdf Just be careful when they’re close like that. If they’re border line close I always release, just to be safe. But great job catch and cook. I must try heading down to that area and try my luck. 👍🏻
Correct me if im wrong but you measured the fish wrong
