These baits are the candy bait for Halibut! I have been doing this for 30+ years and they are stellar. Check back in and let me know how you do! Thanks for watching!
@@kmanuel1493 It's SP. You can do the exact same thing at all of the docks you mentioned. Smelt are at each location. Focus near kelp (but not too close) and especially around the pier pilings. If you chum... they will come!
Not familiar with that area, but everything in the video should work the same up there. Chum with white bread and use only the smallest Hyubasa Sabiki. 🤙
I found a halibut hole on my local beach can I use this technique off beach ?use bobber? Or put flat on bottom, I hooked 2 earlier this week on drop shot rig fresh squid , help me Edward the butts are like 10 to 20 lbs lurking in the holes
Randy, you can catch Smelt off the beach. I'm not sure if a bobber would be the ticket, but you can give it a shot. I'd say the Sabaki and a small weight and you're golden. My Halibut rig from the beach is usually just a Carolina rig and a Blacktail 1/0 Chinu hook. Sometimes larger, depending on the bait. Whack 'em!
Thanks Ed I'm gonna slayem for you and all of real spirited fishermen, you gotta come to fiji with me sometime I got family out there and um fijian ,the fishing there is unreal 15 lb barracuda light tackle from just about any reef edges you can cast to and treacly also ,I'll report tomorrow with double digit butt
Yes sir. I use it 24/7. The last trip though I only caught one and got upset and went to the anti-christ-lure the lucky Craft. I'm posting that video on Saturday morning. It's really an interesting video.
Hey bud, great meeting you! I have about 15 minutes of the Halibuts we saw. One was 24 and one was 26. Hit me up on Instagram so we can Private Message at Office of the Pacific. 🙏
Great tip for tying knots on the water bucket line. Where would you hook a 3-inch, 6-inch, or 9-inch smelt? Bottom lip to upper lip, upper lip only, rear dorsal fin, or anal fin?
Bill, I honestly don't know if I do it right. All of these years I chin hook my baits? Many guys have told me, I should nose hook, collar hook or butt hook. This has always works for me. When you chin hook be careful not to go into the brain. You'll figure it out with practice. Thank you for you kind words. 🙏👍👊
I love your videos! Watched the WSB tutorial 100 times. Glad you are making more videos now! What do you think shiner (perch) vs. smelt? Norcal fisherman here.
Yeah, I bet those Shiner Perch are great! I have no experience with them as they are a rarity in SoCal. Those 7-11 Perch are great and I get bit, good on those! Also, Herring is candy bait, but those are rare here too. Love you videos, James! Keep them coming!
Got it! I am about to fish SoCal for the first time at the end of this month. San Diego Pac Queen 2 day trip. That probably tells a lot of how familiar I am with SoCal fishing (practically 0 now ;). I will try this smelt technic when next spring comes. Yes, herring and anchovy are more common here in the bay. Thanks for checking out my videos! Appreciated!
That’s it I’m calling them HALI-MOTTOS from now on. I tried to catch halibut last weekend using live bait, I was only able to catch mackerels tho. I’ll try chumming the water with white bread this weekend, thanks for the video!
One of the videos from 2019 I do Fire Marshall Bill. That video I'm at a real estate property. I think it's the only video I did that is non fishing related. Thanks 👍👊
Sure. The harbors are loaded with them. Near rocks/Jettys, piers... I've been running over them in open water. Also floating buoys is good. Try to meter them and and anchor up. Chum with white bread... it usually takes them 5 to 10 minutes to find it. Use the Hayabusa Sabiki S002AE or S068AE both work perfectly. If you chum... they will come!
Best thing to do is to chin hook live bait that way you'll hook less of it because your bait will be swimming on the parallel line. Also depends on depth and if you're fishing plastic or live bait.
Office of the Pacific thanks I have been asking around for help and the biggest I have caught I think their names were smelts and it was three I wish to be catching bigger fish thanks for the tips and I subb
Yeah, the work good when there is no wind or current. I have one, but the areas I do this has wonderful, current or both. When that is happening the net angles and makes it impossible for me anyway. Sabiki is a lot harder for sure. I always bring my dop net but rarely use it because everytime I have wind or current. Thanks, Carlos for the suggestion, I appreciate it 👊
Ivan, Sardines are excellent bait, but I prefer Topsmelt. They are way tougher baits and the more dominant bait for the areas I fish. Sardines congregate more on the outside waters in my experience. I too have caught Sardines on piers, bridges and jettys. No matter what our preferences are they are both kickers baits. The biggest Halibuts I've ever hooked was on Spanish Maks and Smaller size Maks 👍👊
@Office of the Pacific I just remember you giving these seminars on white sea bass. In all sincerity, I hope that you are feeling well and that your health is good.
Your accents are very politically incorrect, but super funny. I hope you’re able to show the over reactive SJW how you’re kidding, because ya do a good job and I can tell you mean it from a good place.

What pier are you at?
SP. Same thing at all the other local piers. LB, HB, MB, RB. All are holding. Backup plan is always to hit up the bait barge in MDR or SPB.
You get a like on the video for the " They got big huevos holmes" skit.
