ABANDONED 72 CHEVELLE is the perfect FATHER & SON Barn Find

  • Did Trevor and I snag the perfect Chevelle to revive? This Chevelle was left abandoned in a lean-to for the past 24 years. It hasn't been on the road since 1999! That meets my personal "Barn Find" criteria! The icing on the cake... the car is 100% Original, 100% stock, and complete... sans some of the interior.
I cannot express my excitement that we were able to find a complete, original car for Trevor to start with. He doesn't know how lucky he is. I did not want to start with someone else's abandoned project or a car in a pile of boxes. We are fortunate that we found this car that was within our (very minimal) budget.
We had casually been looking for a Muscle Car to build as a father son project, with the aim of this being Trevor's first car. Our relatively low budget left us with very few decent options. We stumbled across this classic Chevrolet Chevelle, a Malibu flavor. I immediately knew it was the perfect restoration project for us. It is complete enough that we can tinker with it and see if we can revive this Chevelle as it is. We can get it to run and drive. Then, we can work through rebuilding and restoring the entire car. Trevor is still young enough that we have the time to do so.
My first car is a 1952 Chevy truck I built with my father. It was a very influential experience for me as a young kid. I mean, it defined my career. Doing the same with my son was always something that I wanted to do. I was beyond excited when Trevor was all in with the idea and even more so when he wanted a muscle car.
So here we are now. We just procured a new long term project car for the channel. This project will be a fun adventure as I teach Trevor the ins and outs of reviving his Chevelle and then moving on to restoring it. We will go through this car from top to bottom eventually, so stay tuned to watch the progress of the build and see Trevor learn the trade.
Trevor and I thank you for the support!!!

In addition to "WyoTech," I graduated from the BMW Service Technician Education Program, more commonly known as BMW S.T.E.P.
🏎️ I spent nearly ten years working in various BMW dealerships as a Master Technician. After a move back home to the PNW, I found myself no longer servicing German-made machines but now working with Italians. I spent nearly another ten years as a Ferrari Master Technician & Shop Foreman at a local Ferrari dealership.
🏆 Ferrari selected me as one of 12 technicians worldwide to compete in the "Ferrari Testa Rossa Awards" for four years consecutively. Finishing in 3rd place in 2016, & in 2019 I was able to place in 1st, winning the competition & earning the title of the "Top Ferrari Technician in the World!"

My excitement for this Chevelle, and to spend the time with Trevor getting it back on the road is immense! What would you guys like to see from this project?

My father had a 1972 Nova back in his early 20's and I saw a photo of him with the car when I was 10 years old. I fell in love with that style of car so I flipped a few cars to acquire a 1968 Nova last year(24 years of age). We've bonded like no other working on the car. Can't wait for more videos!

That is very cool! Definitely a solid move getting that car to spend time with your dad! What is your plans for it?
More Chevelle videos are on the way. We just got to work through the editing.

Been following the boat build for quite a while now, always great stuff there. Finally starting on my 84 21' Daytona. Ironically it's very similar in colors to yours. I also recently completed a 3yr frame off build on a 71 Chevelle for my father in law. Unfortunately he succumbed to cancer shortly after getting it done so now it's in our care. Looking forward to yours and the boys Chevelle build. We're also just getting started on a first build for my son. It's a 1990 B2600i Mazda I built in high school that ended back up with us after over 25 years. Hopefully getting a couple build series going on my infant TH-cam channel as well. Keep up the great work and we'll keep watching!

That sounds like a tough loss with your father in law. From the sounds of it, he got to see and experience it finished for a little bit? Take care of the Chevelle, and I am sure that it will be a forever reminder of him.
Best of luck with the Daytona and Mazda build. Sounds like you will have your hands full. Seems like there might be a bit of a cool story on the history of the Mazda!! Let me know once you get some videos up. I'll check them out!

Yes he helped a ton on it and got to enjoy it for a short time. It was actually a one family owned car as well.
Trying to get going on a legit TH-cam channel for the projects but as you know all too well it's a ton of work in itself. I'll keep you posted once we get rolling. Thanks!

That’s awesome! What a great project for the two of you.
I remember by fifth grade teacher daily drove a restored, candy apple red Malibu (a ‘68, I believe) and I absolutely loved that car. Part of my early interest in cars that helped grow in to the nut I am today.
I look forward to seeing what you guys do with it!

I would have never guessed that a 68 Chevelle got you roped into cars!?!?!
Now that I know that, it only seems natural that we get you into a 3rd gen carmaro with T Tops. 😂

I’m watching the next video you put out in this car. I’m an old guy who has done a few restorations on his own at home. I like doing rust repair/panel replacement. I live in the Rust Belt where not many cars this old survive in this good of condition. I’m about to finish a 73 van I bought in 2021 that lived its whole life in Seattle.
Based on what I can see from the video, I would patch both of the quarters and the roof as opposed to replacing them. They aren’t that bad and those could easily be patched by fabricating patch panels. You seem fascinated by its originality so why cut off original panels when you can fix them? The areas that are rotten aren’t going to tough to fix. Replacing both panels is a lot more work. Of course in the end it’s your project and call.

    • @AutoTechNick
      @AutoTechNick  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

They are worse than they appear in the video. Trevor and I just finished cleaning the car and getting all the dirt and surface rust off. This gave me a bit of a better assessment of the sheet metal, and as much as I would love to retain the factory quarters and roof, they are too far gone. The real problem is that they are rusted out along the entire perimeter. By this time, I would have finished patching all the rust, I would have already replaced most of the panel. New panels will indeed be faster and a higher quality repair. If I have to choose between quality repairs and originality, I will choose quality all day long. No question there for me.
