Father & Son Build 11-Year-Old's First Car - '59 Ford

  • This is a Start-to-finish review of building my 11-year-old son's first car on an extreme budget. The car is a 1959 Ford Custom Sedan that has been basically abandoned on my own property for years. The classic Ford gets budget bodywork and inexpensive tractor paint. A cheap 390 Ford is rebuilt and the straight 6 is V8 engine swapped. This extreme budget build is topped off with the ultimate test - a 1,200-mile road trip to autocross the car at Holley Ford Fest in Bowling Green, KY. Enjoy!

      Are you serious.
JD has a piece of American history to drive. The newer cars are nothing more than plastic replicas of a matchbox car. Plus he doesn't need a computer to tell him what's wrong with it.
I would prefer an old car/truck over what is out there now.

I'm going to type something here that you already know. Every minute you and JD spend doing these projects together are priceless, worth more than a fleet of supercars. You make a great team. And I direct this to the younger man in the video, if you think I'm being silly, like I would have at 11 and 12 years of age, soon you will be a fine man, living the years as they roll by. They pick up speed as you go. I'm in my 50's, and my Dad, who I loved very much, passed away last year at the age of 84. To say that I miss him is quite the understatement. Cherish these days, you will look back on them with great fondness. I'm truly enjoying your channel!

It was a crap show from the start and I loved every moment of the entire build. It reminds me of when I was 11 and my Dad teaching me stuff. I remember helping my Dad rebuild Ford 8n tractors and discs. Heating those big nuts off the discs and honing cylinders. If you are not a McGyver you wont last in this world. Self tappers are awesome! Left over hardener works too! 1,200 miles on the road shows what you can do! The most awesome thing is you have your son there and teaching him. I lost my Dad at 15 years old. Cancer got him but I learned so much. Dalton, keep it up! I'm 6 beers into a Friday night and watching this. I'm sending a "write-off" donation. What do you need? I had a good laugh when you started describing the factory welds and the employees building the cars. Years ago, I did the interior on my dad's 64 galaxie with him. That car being an XL car and has a lot of trim around the back window and the boarder of the headliner. The person on the driver's side either drilling the holes for the trim or using self-tappers or whatever, was way better than the guy on the passenger side when it came time to find those holes putting the trim back up. Same went for the rear window and package shelf trim. One guy sucked; the other guy sucked worse! ever seen a car of this vintage with perfect door, fender, hood or trunk gaps that someone hasn't taken the time to make perfect? me either!

JD is the coolest kid in his school. To have an awesome car at his age that he built with his dad... man that kid is legendary!

Right off the bat, love that he knows the sound of no compression in a motor so young, I wish I had family that would do more than call a tow truck every time

Enjoyed watching you and your son work together. You have a real buddy there, keep him enthused so the love of old cars doesn’t die.

In the middle of a tube self stuffed cig and the video comes to its conclusion.
Thanks for the compilation Dal'un. That was a great ride.
I wish for you and yours to have continmued success. May my subscription and support allow you to get a real lift so you won't be sliding dangerously under them cars with Harbor Frieght jack stands much longer.
I'd buy merch if I wern't so broke. But I may find a sticker I can afford. I'll be proud to stick one on my 2003 Tundra I named 'Baked Alaska' as the clear coat has been baked off out here in the southwest's unrelenting heat.
Oh the fond memories, when I was the last of three sons to be home as my two older brothers had left the nest and I finally got an opportunity to go to the paint shop with my dad where he worked as an spary finisher.
My pop's paint bench had muti-colored layers of paint from cans of lacquer paint spilled on it in waterfall-esque layers at the edge of the bench that when chipped off gave me a unique piece of my dad's many months and at times years in a paticular paint shop. They were a piece of his life in my hands that I could hold and feel the hours of hard labor he did without complaint to feed and shelter his brood.
I also found the heavy paint laden wheel protection covers gave me a sense of how much work dad had done in that shop.
As you may know the loud banging that persists in a body shop sans ear protection can lead a hearind deficit. This led to my father having significant hearing loss over the 30 years he worked in that enviroment.
My mom believed that my dad actually had 'selective' hearing capabilities. But if you were in the living room when my dad was watching TV with the volume up loud enough to be heard in the neighbor's house, you say otherwise.
My father would be afflicted with prostate cancer and some would suggest a link to his cancer may have been the carcinogenic agents in the distillates found in the thinners and such he worked with and had absorbed through the epidermis and in his lungs.
    [please take no offense]
Do be careful Dal'un especially with JD if you don't mind me suggesting a box of disposable gloves, where possible to be usedf, even if there is a cost involved, it would be worth it.
Again a fine compilation as I've jumped around on this build and to have a sequential run through, I was able to see the whole thing, including bits I hadn't yet seen.

I love watching videos with JD cause you can really see the nature vs nurture at play here.
Already pessimistic, chrome sockets on impacts, sketchy jack points, sees something wrong and works on other things till he's force to fix it.
    Kid is going places.
