Michael, always enjoy your contributions and videos. There are folk who think you are inexperienced and not worthy, but I would say to these very same people, and I say this as a record collector for more than 40 years, experience is relative! Your thoughts and content are, at least in my books, very appreciated. Great job, as usual.
Sadly, I have to let this release go by. I doubt that I’m the only one, but being relatively new to this hobby I have spent a small fortune on records and shipping to Australia in the last few months alone. Miles’ ‘Kind of Blue’ 45 is my only UHQR so far, which was roughly $300AU after shipping, and at that cost I certainly can’t afford to buy everything they release. It really comes down to what title they choose and what the record means to me. It takes discipline to resist the fear of missing out, but I work hard to earn an income which is stretched to the limit already, and christmas is fast approaching. Of course I still love to hear about the record, and as always we get a thorough and thoughtful review from you Michael. The cover looks stunning and I wish I could add one to my collection, but there will always be other releases to get excited about!
Hi Michael, I've been considering buying the Bob Marley UHQR for a while now and thanks to your video I have just ordered them both. Cheers for the great videos they're the most informative on the web, a pleasure to watch and get an education from. Very much appreciated keep up the good work. Have a good one enjoy.😀😀😀
I could care less about new audiophile albums like this, but that cover is very impressive. Record collectors are into records for the tactility, and that textured cover definitely satisfies that desire.
Back in the 70’s I bought a lot of Jamaican reggae imports. Forget about the mastering quality, the pressing quality was atrocious. Thank you for taking the time as always.
Excellent analysis Michael. Capturing the bass is the most difficult thing to pull off - if you get to hear what was recorded on the tape, you can hear the compromises the original mastering engineer had to make to achieve the cut. The limitations of the technology at the time - sometimes! This sounds as if AP have pulled it off and you describe this so eloquently. Thank you. I’m working on a Marley release now and there are so many challenges, including technical defects in the original pressing - I can thoroughly understand and respect the efforts Chad puts his team through - I’m hoping that with vinyl reissues getting more expensive, those efforts inspire every label to do the same. I know they won’t, but I’m hoping enough do. Love your channel, an absolute go-to for me and many in our industry.
I feel very fortunate to have gotten in an order before they go out of stock. I absolutely adore my UHQR Kind of Blue, and have a longer-term love for the music of Bob Marley, so I look forward to hearing it with my own ears.
The vinyl sounded amazing. I’m extremely happy with the sound. A couple things were negative with the packaging. I had a ding (small dent) on the top of the box. And they just grabbed any copy to send. The regular number of what pressings were not on the box, it was just on the back of the cover (jacket). I noticed that you covered yours up. Well, I ordered mine right after I got the notice of the release, and my number was over 2,700. Usually, my UHQR are under 500. But I can just imagine that they grabbed any cover and put it in the box. So, the people doing the packaging need to slow down and use more care. The number system should be checked with what orders came in first. We’re paying good money, get the quality back up there. That being said, the sound quality was fantastic!
I passed on this one because I am not the biggest Bob Marley fan. There are so many good releases coming out these days, I think many of us have started to be more selective with what we are buying. It's just not feasible for some of us to buy every audiophile release that comes out as much as we would like. That being said, I think it's very cool that Chad is putting out different titles and not just recycling the same ones over and over.
Well you pushed me off the fence. Just ordered before they run out. I just got my first UHQR, the SD CBAT and was very impressed although like you end up paying close to double.
I was totally excited when they dropped this album. I never heard it before immediately streamed it. Now I’m waiting for FedEx to drop😂 off my copy. Great video as always homeboy. God bless.
The size of these boxes are becoming a problem to me now. I’m running out of space! As nice as they are, can we have them smaller, like the new mofi thriller album please?
I agree, but it's not going to happen, unfortunately. Just have to store the slipcase somewhere else and keep the jacket with the rest of my collection.. At least that's what I started doing. 🤷
After having collectors replace all their vinyl with CDs in late 80’s/early 90’s, they are adding 125-150$ UHQR duplicates of what they already have 30 years after, arguably hearing a detail here or there that sounds more this or that. Crazy!
Thank you for the review I am excited to get mine. It seems to me that it was the Mofi debacle and higher pressing #s of the other titles that has slowed down the sales of these titles.
This is my favorite Marley album, Like Chad said no radio hits, that’s why I love it! This record is the most soulful and positive, a reggae masterpiece 👍. This would be my choice if you could only pick one Marley record to audiophile 👍
I also own an original US pressing and it is indeed excellent; can’t wait for my UHQR to arrive ! I would love to see if they would do “Catch A Fire “ The original Jamaican version is the one to own ( with the Zippo lighter cover” ) It is quite different to the Chris Blackwell version ; no remix just a pure organic experience!
Very good review and comparison as always! Just a short question: what do you thing about the 1 to 5 voting for the pressings on discogs? There the Jamaican one has 4.75 (best out of 3 pressings in 1976), the US approx. 4.5 and surprise the German 4.52 (best of 2 pressings in 1976)!
I have gotten my first order with 2 UHQR (Steely Dan & J.Hendrix) I´m very happy with both, absolutely great sound, packaging is the best in the business and shipping package also very great. I only they would sell directly in germany, shipping costs, extra tax, customs tax uppens the price quite a bit for us. In the future I have to focus on my absolute fave albums otherwise you are getting pur on that stuff

So Michael greetings again from Radio Tower Records and you have done it again! Yesterday Bowie in Berlin and today Marley - what can I say? I sat 2nd row at The Rainbow in London in 1977 and watched the tears stream down Marley's face as he sang 'War' a song from Rastaman Vibration based on a speech of Haile Salassie. RV is of course a huge Marley record and an interesting start for Chad and I can only hope that there is more to come form the Marley Estate. (But, please, please, please, make sure Catch A Fire is the Jamaican release and not the sugarcoated UK version - ask Chris Blackwell if you need confirmation). Rastafari!
@@leonardosullivan963 Yes, I have a CD copy as part of the Island Deluxe Series where it can be directly compared to the UK Version. Nothing wrong at all with the UK Version but the JA Version is the one.
Can anyone compare it to the 1982 BMSP100 Bob Marley & the Wailers UK Box Set? It's phenomenal, with the best mastering I've heard of Bob's studio albums.
Been looking forward to this review. Mine is coming next week or so. So shocked it’s still not sold out especially being a $100 record for a original or an early pressing. A lot of the UHQR’s you can pick up an early pressing at a an inexpensive price. Great review 45
Michael, You said that the Half Speed version of Abbey Road has a lot of bass sound due to the Half Speed process. Could it be that Abbey Road Studios did include the bass that was in the original master? We remember that there was a time when recording studios lowered the bass so that when playing on cheaper turntables the needles would not skip the track.
Can't beat a Bit of Bob. Great episode as usual. Chad found the Gravy Train certainly. 3500 copies as master tape issues I presume. I feel I would stick with the original. The OG is the OG because it is.
Yes, 'I-ya...Blood and Fya! Great review, Michael. It is too bad Roots-Reggae never made it to American R&B radio, I digress...Chad Kassem appears to have wonderful surprises for his customer base. I've got my copy shelved hoping for the SACD (hopefully).
We used to say that Jamaican records were 'pressed on ganja'. They are always terrible. But of course magical if you don't care about tons of surface noise.
Think l will do the US OG. NM 32 bucks. Sounds like they are not to far apart. I appreciate the vocal improvements. Just not that much l guess. Enjoying your Vids as always 🎉
I think Chad might be happy that they are not sold out. It probably causes great stress not to have enough and we know it will eventually sell out and people will charge double on Discogs
Half speed mastering does seem to be a gimmick. Not the first time you've said it and some other reviews I've seen elsewhere. Not doing Abbey Rd any favours. I wonder why they don't do normal speed remasters?
How do you possibly have this already? Inside hookup huh? I literally ordered it the minute Chad announced it, and I live the next state over. Regular mail usually only takes one day from them to me.
@@R3TR0R4V3 I did not get a low number. :( The numbers are on the inside, so unless they have them stacked in order that they were pressed/printed there is no way they can tell what number they are sending. I am assuming that Michael got personal attention in this case, since he does have the connections. I am certain I had to be one of the first 5-10 people to order, and I got 1,416. It is very nice though. Absolutely no problems.
all guys commenting on this pressing that cd has the same quality or original pressing is better you guys either don't have right equipment or you guys are just saying that just to say it, this is so far the best sound quality of this title I ever heard and I did many of it, yes it is pricey but get it if you would like to have the best sound of this recording
As I understand what Chad said this wasn’t the big announcement. He said this release is to be very limited edition. Michael can weigh into this and fill in any other information that he might know.
Got mine today. First impressions: 1. (Again) I hate these damn encyclopedia boxes! 2. The jacket feels cheap! Certainly not up to the TP/MM standards. 3. This recording isnt “audiophile” so don’t look for that. 4. The record is warm and rich. Too warm/muddy on some tracks but I think that’s also true of the original recording. 5. It’s NOT worth $125 but FOMO strikes again.
I don’t understand the point of paying big bucks for these UHQRs when the originals sound great, are readily available and obviously significantly more reasonably priced…
Holy Shit - I didn't even know about this. Immediately bought it. I was wondering what the missing numbers between AUHQR 0005 (Jimi) and AUHQR 0009 (Steely Dan) - now we know what AUHQR 0006 is - what about AUHQR 0007 and AUHQR 0008!??
As usual, something critical from me: Packing it in an extra box is a totally unnecessary waste of resources and completely incomprehensible these days. Nor this packaging is aesthetic. On the shelf, it screams: Look what I can afford. This is the opposite of what the music wants.
I agree. This a crazy expensive release IMHO. I’ve a few different original pressings of this album where the original UK first pressing is the best sounding of them all when played on my vinyl rig. The original is killer sounding with a lot of details in the sound image as well as a big soundstage, it does already have the audiophile attributes in it IMO. I guess this release is even more ”audiophile sounding” but for me it isn’t worth it, I love the originals I’ve and really enjoy the drive and the raw energy on those masterings. In my experience that drive and raw energy somehow get lost on audiophile reissues in some cases. I think it’s great though that classic roots reggae do get some well deserved attention when an album like this does get released as an audiophile edition. I believe the buyers that get it will enjoy it a lot.
Im with you, man. I own an original with the textured cover. The sound is phenomenal. Not very much you could improve on which gives me zero motivation to spend $150 on a single album. That is just plain asinine in my book. But to each their own
I own this record several times. Absolute no need to import this with the high US Dollar and the FED Ex scam. Good that this not sell out so fast, there u see, the price is way to high.
I suggest that you be blindfolded for these comparisons and that you ask your wife to put on each of the records without telling you which is which. Then do the evaluation. It might even surprise you which one you like! Needless to say, that’s not gonna happen. I’m sure you’re wife has better things to do.
I would think the answer is obvious. Perhaps his choices for best disc would be different. Clearly, there may be some bias here since he usually prefers originals. Not knowing which is which would seem to me to be a better test.
@@ericlubow4354 sometimes the original is better, sometimes the reissue. I believe Michael’s reviews has shown that this is the case. Why would he be biased? He has no horse in any camp and just wants to find out which one sounds better to his ears.
I don’t think anyone would doubt that people are influenced by their preconceived opinions. Thinking that the original, for example, is usually superior, might indeed influence his decision. My main point, though is that it would be interesting if he would have made the same choices had he been blindfolded and didn’t know which record was being played. My long association with audio has taught that people think their ears are better than they actually are. Audiophiles are way too confident about their discriminative abilities. If you doubt that, watch some blind tests on TH-cam. Professional violinists, when blindfolded, often could not tell the Strads from a modern violin. Some didn’t even know when they were playing their own violin.
The jacket has texture but it should be thicker board like stoughton and should have the UHQR catalog number on the spine! This is lame for $125 record.
If Marley ever did anything as great as Royal Scam or even Katy Lied, please let me know. The hate is palpable, but not understandable by me. Do they come across as elitist? Seems like that's the issue, and I understand that angle though it doesn't put me off.
It's apples & oranges, man.. Dumb comment. Neither one is "less than or greater" than the other. Two completely different sounds, styles, messages, etc. Find the good in each artist & enjoy both! 👍
Sometimes things are limited edition because that's all they think they can sell. If they think only 2500 will sell, then make it limited edition and get some people off the fence. I imagine the population of vinyl fetishists that want audiophile versions of reggae is quite small. It's reggae after all. You know we've reached peak ridiculousness when we start getting punk UHQR records.
Sorry Michael, these UHQR releases make absolutely no sense anymore to me due to rising costs of living and weak Euro currency. 249 Euro for Bob Marley UHQR and 289 Euro Steely Dan UHQR 😮! Also the Rastaman recording in 1976 has definitely not an audiophile character.
I agree with you, you can buy the same CD, with the same sound quality, with the price between 15 and 30 Euro, it's the sound that matters to me, not the packaging in boxes....
Does owning a Ferrari makes sense? This are luxury items right now. I understand that they make it UHQR if they have license for only 3500. 12000 of regular APs at 50$ would have been better.
The UHQR's are just too much money at this point. Maybe Chad could release more 45 RPM LP's on the standard grade Vinyl and stick with the old price of $50.00
For me, the UHQR’s are at a price I could afford but if it’s not an artist/album I’m interested in then I’m not buying it. It’s just more than I personally would want to spend and we all have that limit in our heads whether it’s records or buying a gallon of milk. There’s a price point where we just say thanks, but no thanks. They could cut down the price if they got rid of the oversized box they put it in.
Thanks for the critical review Michael! I appreciate your insight. FedEx is supposed to deliver my copy today, as well as the first two Steely Dan SACD’s.

I am assuming that Michael got personal attention in this case, since he does have the connections. I am certain I had to be one of the first 5-10 people to order, and I got 1,416. It is very nice though. Absolutely no problems.
@@youtubeisstoopid no shit! Wow.. that's both shocking _and_ disappointing. Oh well, it is what it is I suppose. :/
@@R3TR0R4V3 yeah, I was completely expecting a low number as well.
all guys commenting on this pressing that cd has the same quality or original pressing is better you guys either don't have right equipment or you guys are just saying that just to say it, this is so far the best sound quality of this title I ever heard and I did many of it, yes it is pricey but get it if you would like to have the best sound of this recording
Does the UHQR version has the same bass than the original?

So was this Bob Marley record the second 'big' announcement that Chad talked about? If so it's a bit.... underwhelming IMHO
As I understand what Chad said this wasn’t the big announcement. He said this release is to be very limited edition. Michael can weigh into this and fill in any other information that he might know.
correct Nicole, there is way more to come
Got mine today.
Textured cover
First press will be the uk. Original
Is audiophile rock dead or just way overpriced.
I cant see pay 150 plus s&h and taxes . When you can get a 1 pressing in most stores in NYC.
I would buy more of these if it didn't cost over $50 to ship to the UK
I suggest that you be blindfolded for these comparisons and that you ask your wife to put on each of the records without telling you which is which. Then do the evaluation. It might even surprise you which one you like! Needless to say, that’s not gonna happen. I’m sure you’re wife has better things to do.
Why?
Here’s a TH-cam blind test that says it all.

The jacket has texture but it should be thicker board like stoughton and should have the UHQR catalog number on the spine! This is lame for $125 record.
Bob Marley>Steely Dan
Steely Dan > Steeleye Span
If Marley ever did anything as great as Royal Scam or even Katy Lied, please let me know. The hate is palpable, but not understandable by me. Do they come across as elitist? Seems like that's the issue, and I understand that angle though it doesn't put me off.
🤣 Hey, Eric! 👋🎶😊
You got that right!
I'm sure it sounds great, but not $125, tax, and shipping great. Easy pass.
The UHQR's are just too much money at this point. Maybe Chad could release more 45 RPM LP's on the standard grade Vinyl and stick with the old price of $50.00
@Fletcher Fortune that’s a rather ignorant response.

BOB Marley now ?? hmmmm what's next Boz Scaggs lol to be serious loose the fancy box its only a matter of time this reissue craze will get over saturated and people might get tired of it
I think Britney Spears will be the next. 😂😂😂

Is there any extra surface noise added to this, like on the KOB 33 UHQR?
