Thanks for posting this review on Bob Marley and the wailers. I saw Bob Marley and the wailers live in London at the Crystal Palace park bowl June 7Th 1980 . I when with my brother Phill and his mate Ian. The lineup was Bob Marley and the wailers. Average white band. Joe Jackson band and the QTips with Paul Young. Tickets were£ 7.50 on the door. me and my brother and Ian were on the left side of the stage at the front. I remember Concorde came over crystal palace park bowl when Bob Marley and the wailers came on stage at the beginning of the Gig. The opening song was Sun is Shining and the last song was Redemption song. 15.000 People turned up to see the wailers. Nice One One love peace ☮️☮️
Well thanks for sharing I didn't realize the songs were cut off, I was thinking about buying that legend but I may just stick with a copy that I have. Wonderful video
Such an underrated album! Sun is Shining will always be my favourite song of all time. The songs on this album were recorded at a similar time as Exodus, hence why it’s a sister album. It also set the tone for the album the following year, Survival. Edit: I’m talking about his album Kaya.
I particularly like Bob Marley and the Wailers Live! Then Rastaman Vibrations and Catch a Fire. I am partial to records that I purchased when I first discovered Marley. They are all are near mint so I can listen with sound quality in mind. Much thanks.
Hi Michael. I bought all of those also. I have never had an original, just CDs. I thought the bass was really good, I felt it but the clarity was what I really liked. I had no idea they faded out songs on Legend. It was nice to get these, I have been enjoying them a lot. Steve
Hello Steve, they are enjoyable, because its great music, you are absolutely right. I just think that there has been much more potential in the masterings if it has been done by the right people/company
Michael - I really appreciate your honest review of the sound quality. And I always find it interesting to learn of your favorite albums from an artist. I have some of the original UK Island recordings which are great pressings to own. Another great video. Thank-you
I have an old (possibly grey market) dvd-a of soul rebels. It sounds freaking amazing, the bass resolution is awesome. It sounds like you're in the studio with the wailers. Well worth the few bucks.

Speaking about EXODUS : i used to own the 1995 MFSL 200g vinyl, + 10 or 12 different pressing in the last 35 years; but the UK 1st press , 1977, ( STERLING) is the best version for sure ! ( just my opinion, with 50 years listening experience as a collector)
I am with you on the fect, if you are going to do Bob Marley albums, do them justice. Would love Analogue Production to do them on 45 rpm and the entire pink floyd and Led Zeppelin lps on 45 rpm. Love the channel you have some amazing lps.
I now have a good selection of the Abbey Road half-speed masters, and there is a general tendency for the treble to be too pronounced, harsh, and brittle across these masters. Further, many (most?) of them are cut from digital, and you can hear that when the soundstage collapses into two dimensions.
Just listened to the 1/2 speed of Babylon by Bus and an original Live! Man, the Live! Sounds so much more natural. The 1/2 speed Babylon sounds high & low, no middle. I got them buy 2 get 1 free so I don’t feel too bad, but I won’t be buying any more if the 1/2 speeds.
That's so true!! I hate the fact that they faded out the songs on the Half Speed Master on Bob Marley's Legend. They do sound great but why cut out each song? Great Video!!
they did this to replicate the original pressing of legend which used a collection of edits and remixes as well as original album cuts.this 1/2 speed master reissue is the closest thing to the original pressing you can get besides of course the original pressing. here is a very informative article on these Bob Marley 1/2 speed remasters from the discogs site, with Miles Showell who cut and remastered these Bob Marley 1/2 speed remasters. blog.discogs.com/en/what-is-half-speed-mastering-explained/
I have Dusty in Memphis half speed mastering and I like it. I am planning to buy Exodus and Catch a fire. Legend I have but not going to replace it. So we listen very carefully, Michael. Ciao.
I wondered if they have returned to the original track-listing for "Legend" with these new versions. On the first press of Legend side A finished with "Easy Skankin'" but they removed it presumably because of the "spliff" lyric. One more question that's not music related Michael, being as you live in Germany what's the fastest you have ever travelled on the Autobahn?
Kaya and the live recorded at the lyceum London are my favourite. I managed i found earlier releases of them but for the others I must admit the High Res versions I bought were better. Nice video as usual 👍🏾
Bass is definitely king in reggae. Good to get your perspective on these half-speed releases. I have the "zippo" box set so will probably pass on these Abbey Road ones.
For those interested, Super Deluxe Edition just posted an interview with Miles Showell about the upcoming Dire Straits/Mark Knopfler Half-speed masters. It can be found here: www.superdeluxeedition.com/interview/dire-straits-and-mark-knopfler-half-speed-mastering-details-revealed/
Thank you for your excellent review. So, do you have a suggestion for a reggae album that is recorded to an audiophile level? I am open to any music in the genre (live or studio) as long as it does not stray too much into pop music (it does not have to be a Bob Marley album.) You are right, the colors and artwork on the cover of Confrontation are fantastic!
Hi Michael, you have confirmed what I was thinking about these half-speed masters they don't have the wow factor. I was surprised to see there was only 1 record per album as with other half-speed masters it has doubled the amount of records that come with an album as it did with The Who Live at Leeds. Have you seen the Tuff Gong Exclusives that have also been brought out recently?
Live at Leeds was expanded with extra material, thus the extra discs. None of the Abbey Road Half-Speed have been spread over extra records (like a 45rpm issue of a 33rpm disc). I have not found their releases to be anything special, but it is good that they are getting some titles out into the market.
Hi, I have all the original vinyl releases and I much prefer the original releases to the various re-releases from around 1986 onwards. “Legend” when it was originally released did contain edited versions of a lot of the tracks, this is because they used the original 7” mixes as opposed to album versions... “Buffalo Soldier” is a great case in point... the 7” mix has a running time of 2:45 as opposed to the version on “Confrontation” which is 4:16
Hallo Michael. I am a huge Bob Marley fan. He died the same week I was born. I agree with you 100%. Catch A Fire is one of my favourite albums of all times. I thought the half-speed master was decent but that wow experience was completely missing. That's why I decided not to buy any of the other half speed masters from the same series. I did however shortly afterwards buy the MOFI edition released in the 90s and it's excellent and a totally different experience. I can also very strongly recommend the very early West German pressings. The West German edition of Exodus that I have is fantastic and easily obtainable. It is so good that I can hardly imagine that the MOFI edition from the 90s is better. I also have an early German pressing of Uprising which is excellent, too. I can however also recommend a newer Bob Marley pressing. It is a 2 disc edition of the Best of Legend album released in 2019 that to my ears sounds very good and deserves to be called audiophile like. But the half speed masters are good nothing more nothing less. Viele Grüße aus Berlin-Wedding Dein Kanal ist super!
Hi Michael. First of all I want to thank you for great presentation. Your channel is super great, it helps me to get into some music I never was into before. I want to ask you since you have such an amazing collection of records and equipment, how you clean your records and which fluids and equipment you use? Thanx again and BIG 🆙 from Serbia.
Excellent video Michael & all those "Marley" albums are great. Yes the HM's are not as good as the original's,but to "really better" these you would have to buy Near mint (NM) or Excellent+(Ex+) pressing! I'm happy with mine for the price (£22-24) & may well & truly purchase another,if I'm not happy with it I can easily send it back for a FULL REFUND! Keep up the good work. #vinyl4ever
Poetryonpladtic's latest video on his most valuable records includes the Bob Marley box set... Though that one doesn't have the original covers but I'm guessing they will sounds exponentially better.
I bought the entire set for the store, as soon as they came out, and have only sold one. Apparently, my customers just don't want to spend this much money. I'm just going to add them to my personal collection and be done with it.
I suggest for Legend get the 2019 double LP version. Sounds pretty good to me without anything to compare. There is another edition of all the titles coming out from Tuff Gong which are not half speed. Also remastered (digital?) but in the USA. Jamaican pressings so quality might be an issue.
finding it hard to understand what all the complaints for these half speed abbey road marley reissues are about. i find them lovely with an improved sound stage overall. they certainly do have a digital clarity but compared to the at times muddy originals i find the half speeds an upgrade. also i find the clearer crystalline sound to be more in line with bobs music from 1975 onwards and these admittedly do NOT sound as good as originals on his earlier albums (catch a fire, burnin, etc...). Exodus in particular has a very nice sound with a lovely balance across sonic spectrum. hope others will not write these off as they are worhwhile for his later catalogue releases.
That was gone fast. Just a matter of minutes after I ordered my copy. I am glad you got your copy Michael. I also tried to reach you, fortunately you secured your copy anyway. I hope Delford you did as well 😊
All the first press Wailers and Bob solo albums on Island are easily available on ebay and discogs and last time i looked (maybe 5 years ago) they could be bought in at least VG+ for not much dunza because they were pressed in great quantities and are in no way rare. They are all analog and probably sound better than any digital version. (The exception is the zippo lighter cover in VG+ to M- but believe me the second pressing of that album sounds great too.)
Hello Michael I picked up catch a fire , Babylon by bus and Exodus I played Catch a fire it sounds good but fill is something missing so I compared my OG Jamaican Exodus and the Half speed exodus I have to say the OG Exodus has that drive that the half speed Exodus is missing the instruments are more up front and warmer great stuff yes these are definitely not audiophile but they are ok 👍 if you Don’t have a copy at all if you have the cash i say go after the OG UK Island take care . Mr. Bob Marley (and the Wailers) always sounded better in my youth and accompanied by a high quality rum on the rocks which followed a special stiff cigarette, after that the sound was always just amazing! A Dual turntable, German (then) made Harman Kardon receiver and Canadian made Mirage speakers, all hooked up with high end lamp cord, ah those were the days. After two of these sessions, memory lane now, my buddies and I walked out of my parents house and went to the University arena about 500 meters away to watch Rush live, 4000 people full capacity. Once with Brian Adams opening, the other time was Loverboy. Canadiana Hey.
The first Abbey Road reissue of Exile on Main St was absolutely awful. The second edition, first included in the Stones box, was wonderful, and is the best modern vinyl pressing you can buy.

Ironically the Marley vinyl releases in the 80's and early 90's said digitally remastered on the outer sleeve but were 'supposedly' completely analog. The sleeves were printed from the CD artwork. Not sure if that is 100% verified but some of those releases sound really good.
