Chainsaw Chain Won't Stop at idle...FIX

  • I would have bet money I had at least one broken clutch return spring, because the chain was turning like it was hooked directly to the crankshaft. The drum was dirty with a hard packed ring of crust in it which was causing the chain not to stop at idle. It still barely creeps forward at idle, I'll talk to the Stihl dealer about this as I don't know just how strong the springs are when new.
    At the end I show an Echo 310 chainsaw and how good it is at stopping the chain at idle.
    I'm going to talk to the Echo dealer and see if I can get more information on how Echo accomplishes this so well.

    I've had my chain rotating during idle and the dealer said I needed to adjust the low idle. Made no difference. After watching your video, I went out to the garage and in 5 minutes I removed and cleaned the drum. Works like new. Thanks.

      I hear you! Just about everyone always thinks it's a low idle adjustment, but that drum is in a perfect place to catch a little fine powdered saw dust combined with some good old chain oil and then trouble starts.
      I'm glad you took care of her!

    Cool ideas for maintenance and performance. Nice camera angles too. Wondering....isn’t there an adjustment screw right under the H & L fuel screws (little hole in the plastic buy the handle) that adjusts the chain to stop on yours? I have a Stihl MS 310 and it adjusts that way.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi J, yes there is the LA adjustment (an idle speed adjustment).
      You can fine tune the idle speed with it. The crud buildup was bad enough to where even though the clutch springs were pulling back in, the crud still caused a lockup condition even with a very low idle ( too low).
      Thanks for watching and commenting!

  • @MitchS1001
    @MitchS1001 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    So did you end up replacing the clutch springs yet? Di you solve the problem for good? I have an MS361 that has a constantly rolling chain. not usually a worry since i always use the chain brake as soon as the bar leaves the wood, but somewhat annoying.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      M Stockdale, I did not replace the springs on this 029. My Stihl dealer is ordering me new springs even though he thought they "felt good", and told me the idle speed might have crept up on it. He said idle speed has to be as low as it can be to keep the chain from turning but I hate to keep having the engine die when I set it down for 5 to 10 seconds. I got in the habit of hitting the brake before putting it down on the ground. Cleaning the drum had the most effect on it as it had built up a hard crusty ridge in it that was grabbing the shoes. Right now the saw will idle with the chain barely wanting to creep.
      Did you clean your drum? Some bar oil is worse than others at leaving a tacky residue of saw dust that in time becomes hard packed crust in the drum.
      Thanks for commenting and work safe!

      @@pmtips4482 if it's dying your either loading up or running lean. Does it four cycle at full throttle? If it does then adjust the low first....then idle speed ....then check the high in the cut...adjust idle....let it rest and cold check low idle ..tweak low....tweak idle. Done! Crazy right? Takes years to figure this crap out if you do it on your own.

    • @pmtips4482

    Did you end up talking to an echo rep about how the chain stop works? I have an echo cs-310 when I let off the throttle the Chan still spins for 1.5-2.5 seconds and sometimes when I start it without the chain break on it will rev right up and spin the chain near full throttle.

    • @pmtips4482
      @pmtips4482  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jon, I did not talk to a rep but I have an Echo dealer within 25 miles of me and talked with him a bit.
      My CS-310 was fairly new in this video. My chain stops like it has an automatic brake but my dealer assured me it's just because everything is new, tight and clean. He showed me the parts and it is all pretty conventional with the traditional drum and centrifugal clutch. I think Echo has the spring tension in these clutches as perfect as you can get them.
