  • RTX 3090 Owners - have you had problems with your memory temperatures? Me too! After testing it out using various GPU settings (default/undervolting/underclocking), trying in various games to max out the memory temps in games like Skyrim, MS Flight Sim 2020, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, and even putting on a cheap fan and heatsink, I noticed the temps were getting worse. And it was finally time to do the thermal pad mod, and I'm glad I did. The aftermarket pads are much better than the factory ones. Obviously this will depend on what the AIB Board Partner uses, I only have an MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3X so I can't tell what temps will be on other cards, but if you are struggling with memory temps, its worth considering swapping out the thermal pads. Use my guide and tips to help you, make sure to check out all the other videos on youtube so you're well informed before doing the mod!

    Hey everyone, after changing out the thermal pads in the MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3x and getting good results, I tried to change out the thermal pads in the Palit RTX 3080 Gaming Pro, and it was a lot harder than I expected. Thanks a ton for the video, gave me the confidence I needed to do this on my MSI RTX 3090 Ventus 3X. I used Thermalright 12.8 W/mK pads and it dropped my memory temps while mining from 100C down to 82C! I only changed the pads on the memory, front and back and on the heat pipe where it makes contact with the heatsink! I didn't worry about changing the pads on all the other components. Lots of the pads on the caps and other components seemed to be around 3.5mm and I did not feel like stacking pads and figured I'd see how it turned out. An 18C improvement is good enough for me, saved some expensive pads as well it seems.

This issue is more noticeable when gaming as GPU temps are higher here when compared to mining. Did you experience this same issue after changing the VRAM thermal pads on this RTX 3090? Thanks for this. I have 3090 Ventus and have been worried about my temps. Playing Microsoft Flight Simulator my GPU stays in the low 70's, my memory pretty much settles at 80, but I have a hotspot that can go as high as 104. I am not at all technical so really worried about doing this, but wondering if my temps are more of a risk than not doing something? If it's just a case of not getting the best performance, then I don't care as my system is perfectly stable, doesn't crash and game performance is superb. But if it could damage my GPU then maybe I should do something?

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      In HWInfo if you put your mouse over GPU Temperature and GPU Hot Spot Temperature it'll say what they are.
      The GPU temp is the average temp on the die.
      The GPU hotspot temp is the hottest spot on the gpu die.
      Mine is 12 deg hotter on the gpu hotspot temp right now, just mining. I could potentially see it as high as 20 deg difference. There's probably nothing you can do except if you really want you can put new thermal paste on the die, but I bet everyone's GPUs are like that.
      Still I'd try to keep that hotspot temp down under 100 deg if you can. Turn your fan up, undervolt it a little (it'll be more efficient anyway).

      They're almost all using very average thermal pads. Its easy to tell from people changing their pads out on their cards, everyone has a different brand/model.

      Fake MX-4! Interesting. Well you can always order a few from other suppliers and test it out. Most of the thermal pastes actually are within a couple of degrees of each other so you can buy whichever really, the kryonaut is supposed to be pretty good though. Have you put the gelid ultimate and themal grizzly kryonaut paste? I was lucky to get it right the first time with the MSI Ventus 3x, but my other card a Palit 3080 took 9 tries, because tolerances were really tight.

So I did copper shim modding (risky and you should know what you are doing) with combination of thermal pads (the thinnest - 0.5mm). Vram temps now stable at 68C while playing. Did a GPU stress test using furmark/MSI Kombustor and peaks at 75C.

    Looking for feedback please. Running a 3090 in a wide open case that is never closed with multiple aftermarket cooling fans for GPU. The CPU is water cooled. The temp never exceeds 50 degrees and my VRAM temp stays between 90-94 degrees max while under 100% load with 115 MH/s range and power wattage 280ish with MH/j efficiency of 0.40. The GPU fans fluctuate between 60%-90%.
    When I end up speaking with folks who had massive success with swapping thermal pads, I find it is often they were really pushing it or using OC or they lowered the VRAM temp by 20 degrees but were landing in the 110 degree range in the first place. Any input greatly appreciated. Cheers!

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yep I generally agree - if you're already in the 80s, its not worth changing out. 90-94 is getting to the hot end. I'd consider thinking about changing it out around 95-100deg. The problem is getting very little gain for the effort you put in. And some cards like for example the Palit RTX 3080 which I just changed was a real pain with very tight tolerances on the thickness of the pads or the whole card wouldn't work.

    I'm just worried since NVIDIA said this would void the warranty. Do you think if I kept the original thermal pads and put them back on before an RMA NVIDIA would be any the wiser?.

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Pads can be disrupted easily even just by opening the card - think sticks of chewing gum before you chew it. It really depends on how good a job you do keeping the old thermal pads.
      If you're outside the US you could void the warranty, so do it at your own risk. In the US you can open the card and it won't void the warranty. It's not a complicated procedure though, nothing electrical here, just some screws and some fan headers (be careful with those). Important to get the thickness of the thermal pads right otherwise it won't work and either the GPU core or memory won't be touching the heatsink properly.

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes something is wrong - GPU core shouldn't go that high. I think what happened was the thermal pads on memory are too thick, so the heatsink is not touching the GPU core. I had the same thing happen on another card - the Palit 3080, where my mem temps were fine but the GPU core was really hot. This video here - th-cam.com/video/NjGVcu42l30/w-d-xo.html
      Normally if you've done it right, the GPU core is between 45-65 deg, and the memory is like 20 deg hotter, maybe 30 max if its GDDR6X.
      Also I don't use nicehash quickminer so I don't really know how to help there. I just use MSI Afterburner and Nicehash program. But I don't think its an issue of the quickminer.

      Hi John, sorry about that - it was because I tried to match the script to the footage so I sped it up 10x. I've found the original footage, I'm going to post up the whole thing though its over an hour long. I'll link once I've done it.
      To answer your question though - to replace the pads, you undo the screw on the back of the card. Just make sure you have all the screws undone, then the heatsink and fans should only be held to the GPU by the thermal paste. You can try to pry it off slowly, if it doesn't come off you still have screws attached. When its off, be careful there's very short cables attached which you must pull out if you can (or look after them). Replace the pads. After that, put thermal paste on, then put the heatsink and fans back on as you found it (including cables you detached and attach them). Put the screws back in.

    I tried changing the memory pads , I used Thermalright pads and arctic 5 paste. In my before case, when I mined at the settings I use, I had a GPU temp of about 54degC, , memory ~106 to 108degC, my fan speed was set to auto and it would max out to 100% (3400 rpm). After case, the GPU is now about 67degC, memory 92 degC, fan speed still on auto is now around 56% (1250 rpm). What do you think? Does thermal paste need to set or did I do a bad application (or an arctic 5 issue)? If I manually set the fans to 90%, the GPU goes to about 62 and memory 88. So I do have an improvement on the memory... just my GPU temps have gone up.

    • @aleemmohammed7794
      @aleemmohammed7794 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      :D figured out my error, the fan sync setting was not on. With fan sync on and fan speed set to 100% I'm getting 53degC, 1 deg better than before. At 90% fans, I'm getting 54degC. I'll change the fan curve so it operates at higher than 56%, I'll shoot for about 65 to 75%.

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Your thermal paste is not supposed to set (its not meant to dry out, you would be waiting forever).
      Ok sounds like you fixed your problem if you got 67 deg for gpu and mem 92 deg and now your GPU core is 53 deg (i'm assuming your memory temps is also much better).
      If you're mining run your fans at 80-90%, fans are cheaper to replace than a GPU ;).

    Thanks to your video I changed the pads. Preliminary settings, 1140 core, 10801 memory, mining at 121 MH/s at 94°C. I have not reached max OC for memory, but have to go to bed. Got lucky for the first time on the silicon lottery.
    It's 94 too high? Hynix updated their website to say their GDDR6X memory is good to 105, with 95 being safe, but I'm worried the thermal paste will start getting worse again.
    315 watts power draw. Wow.

      Congrats. most of the time it is not too difficult to change out, but when there are problems it can be frustrating.
      I just did a video on safe temps - its the latest video on my channel.
      95-105 deg celsius is where they say you might get errors or throttling of memory. 94 is on the border, but if you've already changed the pads out, just try it out for a bit. Not sure its worth getting it down a few more degrees. Myself I lowered the memory a bit and doing 115Mh/s - you can lower the temps a couple of degrees that way.

      This is a MSI Ventus 3x RTX 3090, all the other 3090s from Asus, Gigabyte, EVGA etc will be slightly different. But generally speaking, there'll be a few screws on the back plate and then held together just by the thermal paste on the GPU. At least that's what I've been able to decipher from watching various people on youtube replacing the thermal pads. You have to just check to make sure you've got all the screws out before trying to pull the card apart. These cards were made to be assembled/disassembled by hand.

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      it can help gamers. it depends on what games you play... some games result in very high memory temperatures, Tom's Hardware says Metro Exodus at 4k with RTX on can be over 100deg on a RTX 3080.
      Where did you see that it decreased gaming performance, that doesn't make sense logically, the gaming performance shouldnt change, its just lower temperatures, which would protect your graphics card longer term.

But, when I contacted EVGA about thermal pad size, they indicated to me 2.25mm. But, now, my GPU DIE doesn't seem to be making proper contact. I am getting close to 81c as my hotspt.
    Before it use to be WAYY less then that when it comes to mining.
    I just ordered 2mm Thermalright brand 12.8w/mk, but, I am concerned about size. Should I just order 1.5mm instead?

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If 2.25mm doesn't work, try 2mm. If that doesn't work - adjust your thickness by squashing the thermal pad slightly.
      You should measure the pad with calipers that came out of your graphics card. One card I had, I had to redo 8 times because I couldn't get the thickness right. The gpu core temp and vram temp should be approx 20-30 (max) apart when mining. Like 50/70 or 60/80... not 50/90 or 80/80 (if its too far apart, or too close) one of them is not making proper contact.

      @@JimRPG HEY! Thanks so much for the info, very helpful. Appreciate it. I think my biggest mistake was getting rid of my EVGA stock pads. I mean it was still soft, and I was getting like 42/55. Which I think is good as it gets. The only thing I should've replaced was the paste. Because the paste was ROCK HARD.
      Right now I have ordered the ThermalRight Pads as shown in your video. 12.8w/mk. But, this time 2mm. Whereas before it was 2.5mm, and I think that was the main issue. I was thinking of getting GELID, which I hear better performance, but I am afraid if I end up with some STIFF pads?
      I can still cancel my order and get GELID, but just not sure if it is worth it?

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@fpshooterful 42/55 is really good! Well i did that as well on my Palit card - it was perfectly fine, and i made it worse when I opened it up... it took as i said 8 goes before getting it back to where it was.. no improvement just back to same temps.
      Btw - your EVGA card will have different thermal pad thickness to mine, i had a MSI card in this video.
      I haven't used GELID - either is honestly fine. I got it to work with thermalright so I think you can try that again. But I bought a lot of pads (of lots of different sizes) so there was a bit of a trial and error process and can get a little expensive and wasteful.

    • @fpshooterful
      @fpshooterful 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JimRPG Yes, i contacted EVGA, and their staff indicated to me that I needed a 2.25mm pad. But, here in Canada, we can only get 2.5mm or 2mm. And on reddit, plus couple of other users i contacted, they indicated to me 2.5mm should be fine, since i can "squeeze" into place if it didn't if. Once i got the 2.5mm pad it actually looked the same as EVGA PAD, but ofcourse "eyeing" it isn't the best i idea. And EVGA pad felt more heavier and softer.
      HOPEFULLY, the 2mm i just ordered by ThermalRight does the trick. It did feel soft the first time i ordered it, hopefully the 2mm size makes a difference. I am afraid if i order GELID it might be stiff. And i am about on my 6th try lol. It will 7th when I get the 2mm pad, and hopefully my last.
      The main reason why i did this because i was crashing when I OC'd my memory clock to 1100 when i first got this card, for gaming. Eventually ended up memory OC at 850 after 7 months, for gaming, otherwise i would crash if i went higher. So, i just assumed that the pads were getting worn out? Since i MINE on top of that. I was hoping for better temps by replacing the pads, and better OC results for gaming. For mining i was perfectly fine with the factory pads.

      if GPU temp is only 43 - your thermal pads and heatsink aren't touching the memory is my guess if its so hot, have you opened the card up before? Is it a new card or did u get it used? Either way you have to watch a video and see the thickness of thermal pad that other people used and try that. Sometimes a tolerance of + or - 0.1mm can cause problems like this.
      I went through a very similar issue where the GPU temps were cold and the memory was hot, but i opened up the card and put in thermal pads that were too thin.

    • @JimRPG

      yeah I just dont like to put too much because I want just enough metal contact and just enough where the paste fills some voids, rather than a thick layer of paste and have it all squeeze out the sides. But sure technically it'd be mostly fine i think.

      Yeah it can be like that with different cards - but when you say factory - u mean the standard settings? You have to use optimised settings and undervolt the 3080 and 3090. You can use between 280-300W and get 120mh/s on the 3090. Standard settings out of the box would run the 3090 at 350W.

    Hello good morning, I changed the thermal pads and now when I start the PC the fan turns on at 100% and then the screen goes black. Could it be because I changed the pads for another thickness and the heatsink was not hitting the GPU? Thanks

    • @JimRPG
      @JimRPG  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You have to use the same thickness pads, I hope you didn't throw away the old pads. Measure them with calipers and buy the same size thickness. Technically your PC should still turn on and display the monitor, but if your GPU is not touching the heatsink, your GPU core temps will increase really fast and yeah screen could go black once your temps increase too fast. But if you are not actually using the GPU, if its just windows, your temps won't increase that much. I'm not sure what's happened to your GPU - I would just try it again at least a few times and see if you get the same result each time. You might have to take it back to where you bought it and get another opinion on it. Good Luck.

      It was 2mm front and back for me for the Ventus 3x. It's possible others have slightly different. I'd ask around or check more videos and see what other people have. It's not impossible that some Ventus 3x have different pads. I changed the Palit 3080 and someone else had different pad thickness to me.
      You can always open the card and check yourself :), but sometimes that can mean disturbing the pads and sometimes they can break/tear, and you'll have to wait until you get the pads to fix. Bottom line (get same thickness pads that you have in your card).
