In case you were wondering exactly what you were looking at:
0:11 CNC lathe tail stock retract button depressed, probably to allow material to be inserted into the chuck for machining.
0:12 Oscilloscope with a sawtooth pattern
0:18 CNC machine single block switch, used to "step" through a program one operation at a time for making adjustments
0:19 CNC lathe, about to cut a part on the back side (they usually don't sound like that; it's usually more of a deep hum)
0:22 CNC milling machine cutting a part, with coolant flowing to keep the part cool and clear chips of material
0:26 CNC lathe turning a part and producing a string instead of a chips
0:29 Code being manually inputted into a CNC machine's computer
0:30 CNC milling machine head position display. Relative means the position relative to the last location of the cutter, and absolute means the position relative to a common starting point.
0:32 Some kind of incremental positioning system I don't recognize
0:35 Number Five's wrist being tested
0:39 Number Five's neck cylinders being tested
    0:41 CNC machine start button
0:42 Number Five's tracks being laid out for installation
0:45 Angle grinder being used to grind down and polish a steel weld (steel because of the color of the sparks)
0:50 Number Five's tool arm being tested
0:58 Laser beam directional mechanism lens insertion and servo testing
1:01 100 ohm resistors being cut from a ribbon by a "bend, cut, and form" machine in preparation for insertion into a circuit board and soldering.
1:05 220 ohm resistor being soldered (the wrong way; it's against J-Std-001 to solder from the top of the board like this)
1:08 Transistors (the silver cans), Diode arrays (the red "combs"), and ICs being visually inspected
1:11 CNC machine fine movement dial being turned
1:14 Number Five's wrist being tested
1:18 ICs being improperly stored, then inserted into a circuit board for soldering (Interestingly, they're marked "Eng Sample", which means these are engineering samples, and they're typically beta versions of integrated circuits that are meant to be used for compatibility qualification or as demonstrators. These ICs are made by General Instruments, but I can't find the part number for them so they're likely no longer made)
1:20 Milspec round connector with empty holes
    1:21 Ribbon connector, PETA-type
1:25 Number Five's eye lens being installed
    1:28 Number Five's head installed and voltage-tested
1:34 Main circuit board insertion on their rails
1:36 "Eyebrow" flap servo motor testing
1:41 Camera diaphragm and lens servo testing
1:44 Right side upper arm installation
1:47 Left hand installation and finger servo testing (not the same as on the full prop, as the fingers would curl when retracted and these fingers don't do that)
1:51 Final test readout for the diagnostic test station that runs system tests on the fully assembled robot
1:56 Mechanical press, using an unconventional lever action (usually mechanical presses like this use a rotational mechanism, but this one looks cooler on camera)
1:58 Finished ID plate after enamel coating the logo and lettering, then bolted to the robot's frame using cap head machine screws (the coolest of all screws)

Awesome breakdown dude, this movie really pushed my intrest for electronics, machining and computers when I was a kid. I ended up doing CNC machining for a few years, before everything got sold off to China. We did some parts for General Dynamics, GE Areospace and some other small DOD stuff. I would like to think some of them ended up in Robots a Drone or maybe on a DARPA project. I was in 3/4/5 Axis Milling.

I was a little kid back then. Maybe 10 years old. I had huge interest in robots, such as other kids at that time. Then this move came out. I was in heaven when I knew about this movie. A robot that gets self-awereness by accident and learns the world. What a great story. And additionally that magnificent soundtrack from David Shire. Both Story and score go hand in hand. It was a great movie back then, when I was a kid. And it is a great movie for all kids nowadays. What a time to be alive :) That intro scene with the sountrack music gave me the chills back then, and it gives me the chills right now. This soundtrack is and was ahead of its time :) And much love to this intro scene , too. I was already in tune, when I watched the intro. Johnny 5 I miss you :'(

Can’t explain it, but the first time I saw this (Feb 1992 on TV, so I would have been just short of 7) I thought it was awesome. Then when I watched it again a few months later the music scared me, plus having seen both movies and knowing the character arc of Johnny Five, seeing him being built creeped me out in some primal way that I can’t quite explain. For many years I would skip the intro if I wanted to see the movie. But 31 years later I’m back to thinking this is awesome and I can’t stop watching and rewatching it.

I have ADHD and loved this film and was obsessed with robots when I was little, but my parents told me and I can kinda remember it that I just needed to hear the start of the intro and would run away crying every time, but obviously loved the rest when this was over. Now im wondering what is it about our types of brains that made this scene so terrifying when young?

    • @samuelfawley646
      @samuelfawley646 ปีที่แล้ว

Who knows but the music score by David Shire going along with the close up shots of Johnny Five being assembled in the factory is kinda discomforting for a young child who is on the Autism Spectrum or even someone with ADHD. I also thought that the tank treads suddenly running over the flowers before the demonstration sequence scared me a bit, too. I thought they were train wheels as a kid. Also I was scared of the robot's optic sensors turning red as well!

    • @philjt7474
      @philjt7474 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@samuelfawley646 It is interesting... I always wondered if it was either the music or the scenes that set me off, I guess it's a combination of both, thinking about it again even though I would leave each time from just the start I have something in my head telling me that peak discomfort from this whole scene is when the treads are laid out at the same time the bass line starts... hmm that's funny because I remember just thinking the fight scene with the nova robots was cool and weirdly liking their creepy voices, tho I did always love the way battle droids from Star Wars sounded haha
