It takes a long time to relax back there. You need a partner who is willing to spend the time, like at least five minutes but even ten minutes working up slowly and carefully to the right size. That in-between time is intimate time anyway, so it's almost as enjoyable.
One tip that I've learned over the years is to squeeze yourself for as long as possible before they enter. This fatigues the muscle and makes you automatically relax for entry and makes it much easier.

My absolute nightmare is that someone would stop seeing me because they didn't like how I kissed or something like that, and they didn't even tell me and give me a chance to try to improve!
I feel like a lot of it comes down to the fact that some people have a knack for certain things (kissing, sucking dick, bottoming like a champ, etc lol), but most people honestly don't. In my experience (as someone who's now 30, but I thought this even in my late teens and throughout my 20s), younger people generally need a lot of direction, but aren't always willing to give that direction, and even less willing to take direction... Less experienced people tend to be embarrassed when someone gives them instruction or direction (because they feel like they're "doing something wrong"), and can just get stuck in their ways. I apparently already had a knack for a few things in my youth, but was also open to direction (I'm a Virgo, so I like to be good at things LMAO), and generally more attracted to guys who were older than me and more willing to give that direction. Anyways my theory is that guys who were never open to people more than a few years older than themselves (or those who came out late in life) seem to need a lot more direction than those of us that were open to more when we were younger... And that's fine... Some guys however (especially the younger ones), really seem to take it very personally when given direction, but they kind of just need to learn to get over that, because everybody has different preferences.... Lol

I'm new to topping, and I was always nervous about it because I feel like it's something I'm supposed to earn or whatever (probably internalized hetero-normativity, toxic masculinity, male gate-keeping), but it just blows my mind that some guys want to bottom. Pretty interesting point you bring up. Bottoming being "easier" for people with social anxiety. I really think there's some truth to that. In my experience though, some people are just more mentally prone to enjoying one over the other and others just have preferences based on the mood or even the person they're with. For me personally I've occasionally topped but almost always preferred to bottom and have pretty much always enjoyed it. I think it's first and foremost a psychological thing. Fact of the matter is, it's inherently painful until it's not, and when it isn't overtly painful, it can be uncomfortable if you aren't relaxed. If you're not relaxed, you're just too tense. I feel you on the need for more gay friends though, it seems almost impossible probably because of the fear of the possibility of unwanted sexual tension.

My first experience bottoming was a very good experience chiefly because the top was a nice guy a new from the LGBTQ+ student group a couple of years older and far more experienced. He took time with lots of kissing (an excellent kisser, by the way) and went very slowly at first making sure that I was doing OK.
