The 550 on the UPS indicates the power rating in Volt-Amperes (VA). The reason VA is chosen instead of Watts is because in AC power efficiency is reduced by circuit configuration. I'll leave it at that. Look up "Power Factor in AC" (typically 80 - 95%) if you want to get more information. The USB connection on the end of the UPS is used to connect your UPS to a USB port on your computer. APC have an application called "Powerchute" that provides a status of your UPS and how much time you have left on your battery backup if the power goes out. The application uses the USB connection to communicate with the UPS. I find it helpful to get an idea of how my battery is doing also. If you suffer with "brownouts" (Your house power dips for a moment or drops for a few seconds) the UPS will keep you running. Brownouts are not good for your equipment.
Late to this comment but yeah. Brownouts are a million times worse than just loss of power. When the voltage keeps jumping around that’s asking to kill power supplies.
I appreciate this pretty useful review... I never owned one of these but my job was tossing a practically brand new 750 model, which they let me take home instead of tossing. My employer is upgrading the computer system and oddly enough, this recently installed battery back-up, was not in the plans. It seems to be working perfectly, but I was apprehensive about taking it, because it's so bloody big! However, I decided to take this behemoth device home anyway - I'm glad I did! I was pretty lost on how I could use this unit, since I have never had one before, but your review helped me tremendously. Summers are pretty bad around my home and transformers explode at least two or three times every summer, which usually leaves the entire neighborhood without power for many hours! This device will definitely come in handy, and your review helped me figure out how I can put this to use.... The only thing I have left to do is decide whether internet is more important than my fridge! Thanks again!

The powerchute USB port is for the software on your computer so they can communicate with each other. You can manage all settings with this data connection. It's not 550 volts. It's 550 Watts output (apparently according to manufacturer) You only run on 120 volts AC in US? It's only 240 volts AC here in uk. Could be confusing for some people.

Regardless of how manufacturers promote their products or what salesmen or women tell you when purchasing your server or desktop computer, these are still fragile machines and should be treated as such. During an unexpected power surge and subsequent power failure, your computer will immediately shut down. This will cause the hard drive (the essential spinning component inside the machine that stores all your data) to become damaged. In many cases, the recovery system may be unable to either detect the drive itself or the spin cycle can be affected due to its fragility. In a situation like this, anything between a temporary data loss and/or a permanent internal hardware issue could occur. All business owners understand even temporary data loss means loss of time and loss of earnings. Anyways, read the below. This might help. www.namasteui.com/ups-offers-critical-power-protection-for-your-business/ -- Regards, Sourav Basak Namaste UI

When you connect it to your pc you can disable the beep
If you don’t know what your talking about you should not be doing reviews. The USB type B on this device is not for printers / cameras!!! That port is used to connect this device to your computer so you can use the Power Chute software to manage the device. For example if the UPS is almost out of battery life when your power goes out the software can shutdown your computer safely. It even says on the port “PowerChute USB port!
When it beeps you say you are turning it off. But you are not. That just silenced the alarm unless you hold button down longer
I have an APC ES 550 Battery Backup, and on some occasions I have had to push the power button on it and then the one on my Mac to get it to work. What does this mean? Does the battery need to be replaced in the APC unit, or the whole unit needs replacement?
Try positive criticism next time by focusing on the missing information.
IS THIS BATTERY BACKUP SUPPLY DANGEROUS?
Thanks Peter, great review, and a great reminder that I keep meaning to order one of these on Amazon, but getting side-tracked and forgetting..lol....also, thought I would mention that thanks to your initial review of your friend's Vostok, I ordered my fourth Vostok !!! After watching I had to have that black dial/orange diver with the silicone orange strap!! Wow!..lol
+TheGoodwolfe you might have a Vostok addiction.
LOL....yes, I do tend to go a little overboard when I like something! Vostoks have a lot of character & are such great values with a ton of case styles & dial designs. I also just picked up four Timex watches that appealed to me! Again, I really dug the orange combo on that Vostok!
I have the 450 and every 30 seconds the beep sounds 4 times in a row

the author is completely clueless, video is full of technical inaccurate information and outright false statements. Please leave reviewing to educated people and stop contributing to the pile of bad information that is increasing at alarming rates in recent years.
Don't suppose you wanna correct any of it
You must not have any of the correct info, you just know it's all wrong huh?
Porque não e falado normal em português não estamos na america
WHY DO YOU ASK "WHAT'S UP"???????????????????????????????????????????????????

600v lol it's 600watts draw
Volts multiplied by Amps equals watts... 600VA=600 Watts
@Chuck Holmes the back of my 550 APC says it only supplies 330w output Maximum at 120v 4.6a
@Chuck Holmes yeah but I dont think its enough to keep my Minecraft Server running. last night we had an outtage in Denver and EVERYTHING shut off. the backup didnt even kick on. My computer flashed for a second like it was trying to turn on but then just gave up.

Your flashlight should have eliminated when you disconnected the UPS unit from the power source. (house plug-in)
Having it plugged into the "battery" side of the UPS didn't prove that the UPS works properly... just saying!
Most of the brand are crap I got one but it's fucked up due to a hurricane that killed the power supply.
