  • Dennis Deep Cuts #52 Today I am diving into the wild scene that was Umeå Hardcore of the mid to late 90's. Using the unboxing of the new Abhinanda Box-set as a starting point.

    Awesome video!!!!!
    Every time you mention a band I have never heard of, I do my research and, end up buying the record.
    Shout-out to all the black sheep and outcasts.
    Between the hardcore scene and the graffiti scene, SWEDEN is the pinnacle of existence!

    Thanks for this episode, Dennis! When I was getting acquainted with the punk scene in Sweden, Umeo struck a chord with me and bands like Refused, Abhinanda, Final Exit, Saidiwas, Disconvenience, Step Forward and others was a part of my heart forever.

    Had no idea this boxset was coming out, so thanks for showing it off. Gonna have to see if I can get myself one. Those Abhinanda albums are fucking awesome.
    Really neat to hear you talk about all this stuff. I dived deep into all the Umeå hardcore stuff when I first got into Refused however many years ago, so I actually knew every single band you mentioned here for once 😅 Brainsquashed Puppies is one that I've never listened to because it seems like it's impossible to find their music anywhere, but I was always curious what they sounded like.
    That 90s hardcore scene is pretty unmatched, but I also really like the later 2000s general punk scene in Umeå too. Stuff like Masshysteri, The Vicious, Knugen Faller and of course Noise Conspiracy were all fantastic. Quite the city for music.

      That 2000’s scene was fantastic. Smaller but the bands were amazing.

    I first saw ABBANANDA at the 1 in 12 in Bradford. You could tell that Swedish kids had a better music education than we did in English schools. I also remember Refused playing a weekend festival in Wigan, just before things took off in a big way. Doughnuts also played the UK a few times and it was great to see them too.
    I'm writing this from my car in Norway on my lunch break and getting nostalgic for 90s HC and gigs in general.

    • @Dennisdeepcuts
      @Dennisdeepcuts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think we played the 1 in 12 once as well. Remember Wigan. Wild days.

      @@Dennisdeepcuts The very first time I played the 1 in 12 was supporting Earth Crisis. To say I was shitting my pants is to put it mildly!
      I need to speak to our old drummer and get the details of the Wigan gig. From memory, the year you guys played the stage was outside at the back of the venue. And between the Songs and The Shape LPs in terms of which year it was.
      I'm really pissed that I didn't keep an old skool pen and paper gig diary back in the day.

    I love early Abhinanda and Shield. Such great, underrated bands! I also equally love another Swedish hardcore band Purusam, but I guess they weren't quite from Umea.

    • @Dennisdeepcuts
      @Dennisdeepcuts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      No. They were from Skellefteå. The only band on Desperate Fight that we released that was not from Umeå.

    I would have loved to hear something about Plastic Pride and how they fit in the scene. My band played a few shows with them in Finland back in the days, and I remember being blown away by their Helmet meets Radiohead type of post hardcore sound. Wild live band too!

    • @Dennisdeepcuts
      @Dennisdeepcuts  6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yeah. They were cool.
      So, Thomas the drummer is now the drummer of Vännäs Kasino.
      One of the guitar players were in Shield. The singer from Plastic ended up in Choma with Johannes from Eclipse and cult of Luna.

    Outlast put out some tracts that carry.
    It’s just straight rage. It’s interesting how such a confined snowed in space can produce straight adrenaline, but it did. If anyone’s reading this, first of all hello, second…if you’re like me you’re seeing the importance of these dialogues.
    Rage and punk is how we express love. It’s hard core and hard center.
    Get some headphones and sink in, you will be embraced by a scene that won’t let you go.
    Everyone in punk is kind of alone and secretly in a huge family that will never turn its back on you. I think punk grabbed me in 78 or so. I was about 10.

    • @Dennisdeepcuts

My favorite HC albums from the 90s : No 1 Unbroken - Live Love Regret, an Refused - Shape of Punk to come (both still on my 1. place). 2. earth crisis - firestorm, 3. earth crisis - Gomorrah's Season Ends. Hey, just wanted to stop by and say you are one of my favourite artists!
    I'm quite picky with my music, and take a lot of time to try things out, so i haven't listened to all the bands you are in (will do someday).
    Still, refused has some of my favourite music of all time, and I really adore all albums
    Thank you for making such amazing art, also for getting me interested in certain political views, I am by no means radical, for better and worse, but have definitely stopped being such a pushover when it comes down to some things
    Again, thank you plenty, and hoping you release another album with refused, if you believe thats for the best
