"I Agianst I" is one of the Best albums ever released, by any band! Every song, the singing, the guitar, the production, and the overall groundbreaking punk rock amazingness!!!
I Against I is one of those albums(songs), that literally changed my life! Bad Brains, a band that played songs that made life better through music!

I think it's reasonable to claim that the last 3 Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds records are as good as anything he's done. I also think The Afghan Whigs are better the second time around.
Fun story: I promoted an Anthrax show when I was 19 and Scott Ian told me "I know it's not on the rider, but I really need a cassette of I Against I."

Yeah. Nick cave is really putting out some pretty fantastic and creative music at the moment.
      And that’s a fantastic story. 😀

I rarely comment on anything but I was gonna say the same (not the Scott Ian thing, but it makes a lot of sense too).
Realizing how good Push the Sky Away was back in 2013 was a humbling experience. In retrospect it sounds totally insane, but I had somehow written off Nick Cave as something that belonged to the days of my youth, a nostalgia act still making the rounds. I actually saw that they were coming to town around that time and thought "Meh, I can sing the Weeping Song to myself if I need to."
      What an idiot.
Goes to show how great it is to be proven wrong every now and then.

Thanks for the great episode! Just finished revisiting Bad Brains discography myself) I actually quite like Rise🤷‍♂️
Ryan Adams put out some of his best work in years in January, 4 new records in the same time, one of which is a hardcore punk album, it’s his 29th overall)

I liked Rise more than you seem to but I was listening to Living Colour, Faith No More, Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Beastie Boys at the time and the album fit that mood. I agree with your top pick though.
For a band where the discography peaked at different times in their career I would say ZAO. The last two Albums have been excellent, The Well Intentioned Virus and Crimson Corridor. Lots of amazing albums in their back catalogue as well but the newest are my current favourites.

    Napalm death.
Big fan since scum. But I got to say I think their last two albums and EP are their strongest
Amazing to still be pushing forward musically after so many years

Napalm Death absolutely. up until Apex Predator, Enemy of the Music Business and The Code is Red were my favourites, but they've been super consistent since 2000.

That is such a great question regarding bands with long careers producing their best work on their later albums. I generally think that bands with long careers evolve into different sounds at different points in their careers, and that tends to draw different people in at different points. Take a band like the Cure, they have so many amazing albums, and every Cure fan has a different era that they find the best. I would argue that Bloodflowers is one of their best, and that is their eleventh album. However, early Cure fans would totally disagree with my opinion of this later era Cure.
Like I said above, this is an amazing question that will lead to many fabulous music nerd debates.

I have originals of those top 3 and I agree on their importance in hardcore. As far as bands getting better I would suggest Pile from the Boston area. Rick Maguire is a genius and yes their early records are incredible but the album All Fiction and the latest EP are next level greatness.

Rock for Light on CD was the first Bad Brains I got. It took 20 years to hear it without the extra tracks, not sped up and without the bass turned down (inexplicable production decisions by Darryl and Ocasek on the '91 reissue). I now prefer it to the ROIR tape.
I can't decide whether that or I Against I are tops for me.

    • @Dennisdeepcuts

Well, the first 3 could be the top pick on any given day. 😀

@@Dennisdeepcuts Full admission, I had to google it. I don’t know much about Chuck Mosley. As a skater in the 90s, I just knew Chuck Treece wasn’t in Faith No More. :)

But both chucks did stints in bad brains which is pretty wild.

A band* with a lengthy career with a consistent upswing in quality is Earth. They don't really meet the 'most recent album is their best' rule (difficult, because 'The bees made honey in the lion's skull' was a perfect album, leaving not much room for the following albums to better it, but there's not been a consistent drop in quality since then).
I know this opinion will be sacrilegious to True Fans, who would probably say that anyone who doesn't recognize 'Earth 2 - Special Low Fequency Version' as an absolute masterpiece is not qualified to speak to the merits of their art. I'd respond with, anyone who'd prefer to listen to that three times in succession, over any one of their last few albums might just not like music very much, but to each their own. Earth 2 _is_ a classic.
I'd say Earth's developmental trajectory had at least three phases. Early in the first phase they released a landmark, genre defining, album. I'd argue that the second phase marked an improvement over the first, and the third yet another step with a couple truly great, and one perfect, album.
    * Some might argue that phases of Earth's career has been effectively solo-artist, rather than 'band'. I think 'band' is proper and accurate.

Mgła latest albums are way better than their earlier stuff. Deathspell Omega only went better and better with each album (and then they released The Long Defeat and ruined it all). But they're both politically controversial so, I won't say it loud.

I'd vote for swingin' utters as an example of a band whose later records, last 3 or 4, were (in my opinion) some of their best releases, poorly formed in particular is a masterpiece.
