I gotta say, as a Sonic Youth fan for now over 20 years (!?!), this was a blast to watch, well researched and edited, and it reinvigorated my love for this incredible band. I was very fortunate to have seen them live three times, twice in 2006 and in 2008, all in southern california. Those shows I still regard as one of the best concert experiences I've ever had. It's no easy feat containing SY's 30 year long history in less than 30 minutes, but you did excellently!
I feel I should point out that one very significant part of SY history you did not mention that merits inclusion was the gear theft that occurred in July 1999 - overnight after a gig in Orange County CA, a Ryder truck containing nearly all of their touring instruments and equipment was stolen. In addition to drums, amps, pedals, and basses, 27 guitars - used for the various alternate tunings, all uniquely modified and irreplacable - were gone. As of 2023 only 4 guitars have been recovered. This massive loss of their key instruments forced the band to re-approach their songwriting, both dig out old guitars and attain new ones, and as a result the band's sound evolved into a cleaner, jam/psychadelic infused sound, while still exploring the wall of noise experiments, shown in albums like NYC Ghosts & Flowers & Murray Street.
So that "bass" you mentioned being at Kim's apartment when Thurston first visited was actually not a bass but a guitar with a crazy connection between them: it was a Korean made "Drifter" guitar that belonged to a friend of Thurston's first pre-SY band The Coachmen, he had played it occasionally and through traveling hands it ended up in Kim's possession. He saw she had the guitar and that was definitely an ice-breaker in their developing friendship and later romance. That Drifter guitar became one of the first SY instruments, and in the mid-80s it was converted into a 4 string (tuned F#-F#-B-B), the frets ripped out, and played by Thurston using drumsticks on "Eric's Trip" on Daydream Nation. Sadly the Drifter was among the numerous guitars, amps, and gear that was stolen in July 1999 and was never recovered.

I saw Sonic Youth at the This Ain't No Picnic festival in July of 1999. It was the first gig they played after the theft on equipment borrowed from the other bands and hastily retuned and modified that afternoon. I've seen Sonic Youth many times from 1992 to 2013 and that was one of the best gigs they ever did imho. Also the only time I've ever crowd surfed.
I was tripping balls that day and a few hours before SY played my brother and I and a few friends were playing frisbee with a Jar Jar Binks frisbee that I had which was a KFC chicken bucket lid / frisbee as a promotional tie in to the Phantom Menace being released earlier that year.
Someone pointed out Lee Ranaldo having a conversation and suggested I get his autograph. The only thing I had was the Jar Jar Binks frisbee, so I borrowed a pen and rudely interrupted Lee: "would you sign my Jar Jar Binks frisbee?" He very graciously paused his conversation and signed it and handed it back. We stopped playing frisbee and I still have it to this day, although the signature is smeared and a piece of it broke off of the edge 😄
Anyway SY has never failed to deliver an insane live show. Even on the Thousand Leaves tour when I saw them three nights in a row and it was the ONLY time they ever repeated the same set each night 😑
They played with Pavement the first time I ever saw them at Castaic Lake, and the last time I ever saw them at the Hollywood Bowl. For awhile it was a family tradition for my brother and I to go see them, even if we sometimes went in separate groups. While I don't think that a reunion will ever work for them, I dearly miss them. I didn't shell out for "concerts" as much as I went to shows back then, but I would always try and catch Sonic Youth.
Kim Gordon has been doing the coolest shit post SY. Search up any of her recent videos or live performances. She is really still cultivating a unique and inspired sound.

      @@sonicsnout SONIK LIFE!!!!!
dude thank you so much for taking the time to type this amazing recollection. My first Sonic Youth show was at some piss-smelly dive club in Sacramento 2006 right after Rather Ripped dropped. My then-girlfriend (also a diehard SY fan) drove from LA to Sac to see them. We were front and center at the stage. That show was like experiencing the first day of the rest of my life hahaha. It was an incredible experiene. I've never seen anyone play and sculpt noise with such unconstraint and control like Thurston and Lee can.
They played Pattern Recognition - one of my all time favorite SY tunes - and I knew what was coming. I heard from my gf they go BONKERS in the song's chaotic finale and particularily Thurston was known to really "lose himself" in the sound hehe... as the band did the final synced chord crash and into the feedback-ridden eardrum popping coda, Thurston began to sway more and more wildly. He swung his guitar around a bit, but then looked up and took his guitar and HUNG IT ON THE STAGE LIGHT SCAFFOLD while it was still plugged in - droning and screaming feedback. I look over at Kim and she's pressing her bass against her amp causing this almight WOOOOOOO sound. Lee has his guitar on the ground and he's scraping it with his stll-plugged-in guitar cord. Steve is crashing away on cymbals. Newly joined Mark Ibold holds down the low drone notes.
I look back at Thurston and he's lightly picking his still hanging guitar, but then he grabs it and jumps into the crowd!!! They push him back and forth - GUITAR STILL PLUGGED IN - my gf nudges me with a "DO IT! DO IT!" face and I mosh my way over to where Thurston is, leap forward towards him, reached over and BASHED the strings of his Jazzmaster, causing this crazy ZWANNNNNNNG! sound - Thurston smiled big at me and the crowd pushed him back to the stage - he literally slumps onto the stage and rolls on the ground a bit and then finally stands up and the sound calms into applause and cheering.
It was the greatest concert experience I ever, will ever, have. That moment changed my life, hands down.
Less than a week later, we saw them again at a secret show in downtown LA. We were early showing up, and we got to catch the band arriving for soundcheck. My gf had a satchel bag that she was on a mission to have signed by every SY member. She already had Lee's and thanks to us getting there early, she got all 4 autographs! As Thurston signed her bag, I mentioned we were at the Sac show and he recognized us and me as the guy who hit his guitar!!! he said "that was killer man thanks for adding to it!" 🤩🤩
There was and will never be a live band like Sonic Youth - I feel so fortunate that we got to experience them. 🤘

Great summary. One thing you kinda missed is what exactly made their sound so different. Firstly, they almost never used standard guitar tunings. Daydream Nation sounds so interesting because it is all alternative tunings. Lee Rinaldo was really innovative. Also Kim's droll vocals (influenced by Patti Smith) which are half spoken word, half singing. A lot of bands were influenced by them but couldn't quite replicate that sound or feel.

Nice to see pics from their early stages. Read Thurston's autobiography Sonic Life for more thoroughly correct details. Coachmen was already band of RISD guys who considered Thurston a wild child whom they brought in to augment the guitars, but had little enthusiasm for his spraying blood on the stage due to his self-injuring manic strumming style.

Lee was super nice to me and I was already majorly in love w Kim .Perhaps jealous of Thurston so I just stared and clammed up. Same show I met and became longtime friends with Keith( Black Flag/Circle Jerks) Morris Yes thanks for the mention of Glenn Branca. You forgot to mention Thurstons lifelong obsession with Danny Partridge. There’s something profound in that. Anyone who misses a John Cale show is snubbing a life changer.

I even went so far as changing the strings on one guitar and tried alt tunings. I bought every album until near the end. Some of the stuff they have done will be unmatched. Kim even picking up a guitar towards the end and lee is a legit guitar player. Loved thurstons solo work. SY forever.

The 2 best American bands of the 80s were far better known in Europe (especially Britain) than back in the US at the time.
    Sonic Youth and Pixies.
Didn't hurt that Bowie and John Peel talked them up, that alone gives a lot of credibility.

You mention Mark Ibold but not Jim O'Rourke? No mention of SYR's amazing noise recordings and collaborations? No mention of Thurston's extensive solo work either, or much of Lee's. No mention of Kim's amazing Body/Head project. This needs to be a much longer, deeper dive.

They SORT OF ruined innovation in music in America because whilst they and the other grunge artists were doing guitar based music in the 90s Europe and the UK were pushing the boundries with synthesizers and electronic music. The Prodigy,Goldie, and Aphex Twin were way ahead of everything compared to these guys.Even to this day America is behind on innovation because of its obsession with bands but If there is a trailblazer band worth talking about from that time period its Suicide.Sonic Youth was great music but it was really for teenagers not adults.Suicide is the most interesting in my opinion.

duh....that's their point. Noise infused Rock music. Experimenting for the sake of making original music. Now go back and listen to your boring, mainstream, prog rock old people music.

Sonic youth, Lou Reed NY guys just want to be rock stars, fuel up on cocaine and whiskey.

Lyrics could be interesting but I don’t listen unless the actual musicianship of playing the instruments is any good. These guys sound like their playing anything and trying to make it work. Nice go at it, after the song put the instruments on fire to get more attention.

I listen to Sonic Youth, but they are massively overated. Not really sure why people seem to like Kim Gordon so much but she has always been absolutely devoid of talent and just got really lucky to meet people like Thurston, Lee and Steve. I've always considered her an imposter in the music, would anyone actually have listened to her music if not for Sonic Youth? doubtful. I know its meant to be No-Wave but that just seems like a cop out to justify how poor some of the music actually is, which was certainly not at all helped by Kim. They could have found a more interesting bassist and vocalist but its pretty clear that they liked the idea of a female member for appearances.
