Probably the most compelling offer by Cold Steel or Windlass so far. Dave Baker of Forged in Fire fame designed it, so what can you expect other than the most practical one? A steal of a sword for under 200 bucks!
There actually where grips shaped like the one on the MAA messer. The tang was still knife like but the two wood halves totally hid the tang top and bottom and where pinned together so you would see nothing but a seam between the wood halves. The MAA is not totally historically accurate but it would be enough to make me happy.
My pleasure! One thing came to mind I'm curious about. When I look down the spine of mine it's dead straight, but when I look down the edge there's a little bit of warping. It doesn't seem to effect cutting performance or ease of sharpening, but it's mildly concerning to me. Is yours like that?
@@listenup455 no, mine is pretty straight. I notice some slight wavering, but nothing that bad to give me concern. I bet different examples vary though. It’s part of my general concern for cold steel swords…inconsistency and quality control. But this example is rather quite good!!
Good to know. I also have the arming sword in the MAA line and it's a solid blade albeit slightly thick behind the edge and could go for a little more distal taper. My 3rd CS sword is the Gim, which I believe is made for them by Dynasty Forge rather than Windlass, and that thing is a beauty. No secondary bevel and definitely higher levels of fit and finish.

The issue is centered around poor quality control leading to inconsistencies in build quality and heat treatment. The other major issue is poor handling characteristics when compared to historical examples. That being said, you raise an interesting point; The price and the historical inspiration. There is a lot to enjoy with this messer for the price. This model represents what I think is great about cold steel swords: accessibility into the world of functional, historical swords. I can bet many a sword snob have owned a few cold steel swords…and dare I say…..loved them!!! Cheers!
Damn rite, and on the knife side, in fixed blades you get a better buy than ANY company , the folders are not cheap, but every material is top levle, t I p notch design, a nd fit and finish AMAZING, despite what country is on the blade

Quick note on the MAA series; they don't do the bluing just to give them a more modern look, it actually allows them to skip over steps they take to finish their other products, this making the price cheaper. Also, the MAA versions have plastic cores vs. wooden cores on their non-MAA counterparts.

I guess its a personal attack against me because a sword is completely legal to import here in Canada. I already have a few that i imported. I was about to order this cold steel messer too. @@coreycollins6703 definitely. A few years ago someone, I forget their name, did an indepth study of messers & falchions to deckvise a classification system. Apart from hilt design it turned it that of all the blade profile varieties m&f share like 90% of designs! There were few blade types exclusive to either m or f. But technically hilt construction is the key so yes cold steel actually makes falchions 😂

German person here. Last variation of the Großes Messer is the Hirschfänger, used to interwar periode. But of course, from 1870s onwards, hunting rifles had got such quality, that the ,final stab' of wounded game was rarer necessary, so the Hirschfänger became more a dressweapon.
Hey man great video! Big fan. I have this blade and the ronin katana two handed saber also and had similar thoughts. I will say my knuckle guard snapped off during test cutting and just looks like a bad weld. Oh and I have the same America's best defense shirt! Haha was beginning to wonder if this was a video of myself!

Actually bluing is , or was a form of protection, i.d.k. if your old enough to have any blued gun or rifles, but ther re is cold blue options even in a touch up pen , by Berchwood Caseys, or any other blu brsnd
Im going to say it would give some trouble, but 100% honest, it would be worth it to heat GG hat up with a torch sn DC bend it out how you want, or even cut ti off and weld to other side, i know you wouldent want to, but if you , you would get praise and respect from anybody who knowes anything of steele, of using weapons

Got The Knochenbecher from DSA today yea Man its a thin blade nice two handed handle and the back side has a HUGE false edge which ik you Like..glad i grabbed that on sale..lol 100 bucks off for a minor scrach on the wood you can HARDLY see..lol!
@@mattamathics1108 its like 2.5 pounds if that the blade is very thin..i did tell them to sharpen the hell out of it..but nope it struggles to cut water bottles . there is many sharp metal parts on it that will piss me off i had to wear gloves to use it..but those are all things a grinder and saw can fix.
@@ryldauril6379 2.5 is great for a hand and a half!! Yea man…I’m not sure why companies cannot just sharpen their swords correctly. It is extremely annoying, especially when you pay over 500 for a “sharp” sword. Your not alone!
It's a Messer.... they're actually like long knives, as the original German name "Langes Messer" means long knife. This is completely expected for the blade.

Did the bluing scratch with the cutting? I feel like the scratches would be more apparent on that finish.

It's supposed to be light and nimble, and it is. Great balance. Unless you're chopping wood or something this is what you want. Try it out
