Note that I mentioned that Telma was a Gerudo, but I forgot to say that it's just a theory. It's hinted at through some aesthetics and symbolism and it's been part of my headcanon for so long that I assumed it was canon. It's not confirmed, just so you know.

TubaBluba what do you find so disappointing about it? I like it.
I thought it added a needed dynamic to the Zelda verse.
      • The gameplay was fun,
      • graphics and music very impressive,
      • story was cool,
      • bosses shrines and temples were difficult yet addicting to complete,
      • i loved collecting and hoarding items to upgrade all my gear,
      • i loved exploring (something zelda has never done extensively),
      • I was addicted to killing lynels so much I could do it blindfolded(only on the savage spear lynels)
All that said, Im not saying Twilight Princess is vastly behind BotW. In fact all my zelda rankings are closely knitted to eachother.
While I regard it highly, do I think it’s perfect? No. I think they botched the Ganon fight, I despise how easy he is and that the reward for completing the unnecessary divine beasts is simply less health. Which is BULLSHIT cuz they literally have already successfully did this in the Fierce Diety Mask in MM.
But what dont you like about it? Im genuinely asking because i’d love to know you thoughts on it.

    • @TubaBluba789
      @TubaBluba789 5 ปีที่แล้ว +45

@@PittsburghSonido Well I was mainly disapointed by the story telling. There was no character develpment or any reason to car about zelda or the champions. The dungeons were the same, with the same boss. There was little enemy veriety. And the ganon fight was a joke. I wish the game was set 100 years in the past, during the collapse of hyrule. And the shrines were the same over and over.
The best parts were the castle, the open world, climbing, the lost woods and the yuga hide out.

Me too. He’s my favorite version of Link because of how much personality he shows as a silent protagonist when he talks to people, & I relate to him a lot. Especially in the opening, which has been an huge issue for many people saying that it slows the game down. That’s fine, but I love the opening because it shows us Link’s peaceful life as a farm boy, & it’s pretty charming & emotional. And I feel like people who don’t like this game & its opening dismiss that thing about Link because they want their perfect Zelda fast paced Zelda game like A Link to the Past. I’m happy with what TP became, & it’s one of my favorite games ever.

This game is as complex in it's first dungeon as it will ever be.

@@travisbewley7084 Not really. Arbiters Ground and Snow Peak Ruins both have Dungeon items that are rarely used outside of them and are featured on the majority of Top 10 Zelda Dungeon Lists out there. How good a dungeon is has little to Do with how many items you use to complete it but with how you use them and how you make the environment interact with them. The number of items used does not equal complexety.
Beyond that there is so much more to a dungeon than just the puzzles. Build up, art design/atmosphere and pacing are just aß impotant. Arbiters Ground starts of with you going traversing a desert to get to it. On the way you discover that the Moblin tribes have made their home in the desert and you have to get through their lair ending in a 1v1 swordfight with their King whom you have a history with and who spitefully sets the whole thing on fire after he loses to kill you. Once you escape you can finally make your way into the temple.
The first part of the temple is hunt for four ghosts making use of Wolf links mechanics to track them through secret doors and illusions. Once you made it through that have to navigate your way through a giant complex that's build to only be fully traversable with one specific item which you first have to get. On the way you find a sword held in place by a dozen of sealing talismans. Destroying only one of them results in the evil spirit breaking free and starts one hell of a mini boss battle. Once you have your mcguffin you can fully traverse the temple in some epic rollercoasting. In the boss room you have a brief confrontation with Zant the Main bady who let's a huge skeletal creature lose on you. It makes for a very fun and unique boss battle that is once again only possible with the very specific item that you have.
Twilight Princess nails the cinematic approach to dungeons like no other zelda title and it is because they weren't afraid to design around specific items in limited environments that some of the dungeons were that great. I would much rather have the arbiters grounds spinner for a dungeon than another boomerang like we've had in 10 other games.

TP is definitely my favorite Zelda game.
    1. The dungeons were so enjoyable. The Lakebed Temple was long (I love long dungeons!) and challenging, Snowpeak Ruins was very interesting, Temple of Time was pretty cool, City in the Sky was unique, Arbiter's Grounds was very fun with the spinner, etc.
    2. Midna was an awesome sidekick.
    3. Great music! Midna's Lament, Hyrule Field, Malo Mart, etc.
    4. Awesome events in the game. Chasing the fat king and then jousting him off the bridge, melting Zora's Domain, wrestling with Gorons, going into a hidden town and sniping the enemies with the hawkeye, escaping the prison, taking Midna to Zelda, etc.
    5. Cool items, such as the spinner, the double clawshot, the ball and chain, and the boots that let you walk upside down on certain ceilings.
    6. Great final boss fight.
I spent 53 hours on the game, and I enjoyed every hour.

My favorite part is that it's a tragedy. You break these borders between the races time and time again throughout the game and inspire people to be more courageous, and Midna was there through it all. Despite all that, she leaves and breaks the mirror so her people wouldn't be hurt again, she didn't learn the lesson she was supposed to. The foreshadowing for that event was handled very well too. But I think it's really impactful that despite everything, she would still do that.

  • @Dhorannis

I never experienced Twilight Princess as a bad game, It more or less shares the first place with Majora's Mask in my mind.
Both stories are darker and more mature than most other Zelda titles. The games with the shadow realm might have a dark aesthetic but are still not that dark story-wise. MM for example has the overarching theme of loss, grief and death and a very strong focus on the emotions of characters. As for TP, I really enjoyed the look of this game. From a pure point of aesthetics, I think that it has been a very good take on the Zelda franchise with its not too realistic but also not to comic-like presentation. And the subtile colour pallet was just amazing if you ask me. The happy scenes were bright but still not too clean and the dark scenes always had this ominous glow that acentuates the little light there was. In my opinion, a very clever way to hit the twilight thematic.

The game is a masterpiece and I'm surely looking forward for BotW2. However, you speak of BotW as a "reinvention" dark zeldas. Any "dark story" will be completely neutered by this kind of artstyle for me. For example, I wouldn't like a Majora's Mask remake on this art style. Also "Ghibli" is not automatically synonimous with good. It has it's place, but as much as I liked a couple of the classic ghibli movies, if you told me they are releasing a "Ghibli like Silent Hill" I would think you are shitting me. Preposterous. And before you mention "Grave of the Fireflies" as a dark "ghibli style" story, that movie is dark despite it's artstyle, not aided and compounded by it.

Going back to the Midna/Zant part about cycles of power, it's very much spot on for how cycles of power work in history. If you dig through the eras, you'll notice that great kingdoms and empires are established by great people, but once they pass on these kingdoms and empires slowly fall to ruin due to being inherited by corrupt and incompetent individuals. We see this in Rome, France, the Byzantine Empire, Britain, as well as many others... The only ones that survive are the ones that learn to adapt and change with the shifting tides. Those who are unable or unwilling to move on find themselves crushed by invaders and rebellions. (I know I'm dumbing down how those kingdoms and empires changed and fell, but I still think it's a fair comparison.)

Plus, the combination of color and the artstyle are both so ugly...

I make new connections like every playthrough.
Just the last playthrough (#5) I realized that the moment Midna mentioned the Mirror of Twilight to Zelda, that gave away her identity that she is the Twilight Princess to Zelda.
"Midna... I believe I understand now just who and what you are"
I thought that quote for the longest time meant she realized she's a kind hearted person instead of a total bitch like she portrayed herself in the beginning. But she figured out she was once the Twilight Ruler
"Despite your mortal injuries, you act in our stead" I thought she meant the injury she suffered from the light exposure, but seeing the word "injury" being plural, she meant that, and the cursed form she took after losing her power.
"These dark times are the result of our deeds, yet it is you who have reaped the penalty" At first I thought it was again continuing the light exposure stuff, but the meaning is incredibly deep. Just thinking about what happened to Midna at that point, she lived a normal life in royalty. She loses her power to Zant, who becomes a dictator, and she believes the only way to match his power is to use the old magic that got her tribe banished to her forsaken world in the first place, which is a power known to corrupt the hearts of it's user, more like Majora's Mask rather than the Triforce. And in the end she pretty much went through all of that to die before being saved.
Yeah I really love that cutscene.

I've never disliked it but I've never loved it either, particularly because the reveal of Zant not being the main villain and the bland overworld turned me off. Because of this, I've always wondered why people liked Twilight Princess so much, as I thought it was mostly forgettable.
This video gave me some much needed insight. Twilight Princess really is like, as Midna says at the end of the game, two sides of a coin. One side is unbelievably epic and expansive, while the other half is melancholic, quiet, and empty. Putting it in this perspective, I can see Twilight Princess as a much more polished game than I originally thought as a game that is greater than the sum of its parts.

What I think would be really cool though is seeing what comes after, because while the story that the Hero of Time and Ganondorf started has concluded, the end of the game still feels like a new beginning for the world, almost like it has been freed from the stasis that had befallen it.

I absolutely love this game to death, including SS. They were my first zelda games. I would agree though that Ganondorf in TP was the least developed "main" villain in the story - he was more of less mentioned and met in a final battle in contrast to WW's or Oot's Ganondorf.
However, no one can argue with Twilight Princess's Ganondorf's sheer power and badassery of literally dying while standing up. Respect.

I love Twilight Princess so much! I have a vivid memory of how we watched the trailer on TH-cam over and over again as children. Midna was the Princess/ Queen I always wanted to see as a child, because Zelda and Ruto kinda pissed me off with their attitude... The dungeons were amazing and it gave me the sense of threat I had only felt in Majora's Mask before (which is also a big favourite of mine)!
    Have a nice day :)

@@darknesswave100 Well I wouldn''t really say it's underrated. MM is very much liked by most Zelda fans, and is often compared to Ocarina of Time. If anything, people are more divided on MM3D than the original.

@GinTamashii I agree. Part of the charm *are* the N64 graphics. With the 3D version, I just felt that something was missing, I'm not sure what though (maybe the atmosphere and mood). Despite the improvements, I find the original to be superior.
EDIT: Also the Twinmold fight *SUCKS* in 3D.

Honestly, I find that Twilight Princess has everything that makes Zelda.... well Zelda and it does it all well. Huge and intricate dungeons, memorable and amazing bosses, a collection of races all interacting and truly living together in this world, a large and expansive overworld with a degree of openness, living and breathing towns and civilisations, cool items, notable sidequests, great partner character, amazing characters, outstanding and varied combat, a unique quirk that separates it from the rest (wolf link, twilight world etc) and of course, a fairly challanging and interesting final boss.
Twilight Princess has all of these and does it all very well. Yes, there are cartain aspects that other games have done better. BotW for example (my #1 in the franchise alongside TP) does the open and expansive world MUCH better than TP however it falls short in other areas such as story, dungeons, bosses and it's lack of thriving towns and cities (yes there are the four homes of the four races but these are far too few in such a large world for the place to feel alive. It's understandable because of the post apocalyse setting but still). Twiliggt Princess has definitely earned it's place as my #1 and even with my extreme love and almost obsession for open world games, the fact that I can't bring myself to put BotW above it says alot about TP.

It's amazing how much you have to say about the depth of the story. I never really thought too much about it, even though it's one of my favorite games. The theme of loneliness definitely resonates and might just be why i always loved the tone so much. It's sad, yet very hopeful. Not only does it have a great story, great characters and tone. There's also the areas, dungeons, bosses, mini-games and collectables. Loved the wolf mode, where you howl and meet with the undead. Learning where and how to utilize your weapons. All of it just went so well together, to give a great experience!

  • @mee7er

I would actually argue the theme of the game is the polar opposite.
Twilight is the brief moment in time when day transitions into night. The game is about change and the difficulties that come with change sometimes.
Link starts the game living a peaceful life as a ranch hand before being forced into becoming the hero the world needs.
Link’s first hurdle/challenge is changing back to a human from a wolf.
We meet Midna during a difficult period in her life where she is trying to cope with the changes in both her social standings and physical form.
Zelda has put in a position where she finally has agency to make a difference in the world when she meets Link.
Zant gets the opportunity to become the dark lord he aspired to be through Ganondorf but fails to grow and develop into the role dispite all the advantages given to him.
I can go on forever but you get the idea.
That’s what I got out of the game anyways.

I agree so much, Twilight Princess is also my favorite for exactly these reasons and more. With the first point alone I knew I'd love hearing your take on the game, because in reality, the OBVIOUS inspiration it takes from Ocarina of Time as a foundation really only serves as a nostalgic and appropriate FOUNDATION for it to build its own amazing game from. And it does a tremendous job of that because of its own merits that it establishes very well and as a game alone, how enjoyable it is to play (for me at least) as well.

This was a very good video, Aleczandxr! Out of the Zelda franchise, it was Twilight Princess that I rarely revisited. This video helped me to gain a new perspective on it that I hadn't seen before.
Recontextualizing the game by comparing it with its predecessors and successors really helps legitimize its "twilight" identity - as you said, an identity that exists within a limbo of rest and unrest, moving and unmoving, loneliness and contentedness. It felt as if I was staring at a world through the lens of a foggy dream or looking upon the surface of a pond, giving me an unsettling degree of separation yet familiarity that left me with a poignant uneasiness every time I played the game. As you said, the atmosphere itself lends the game to this eerie inclination - vast valleys of emptiness, vibrant forests of vitality, fallen ruins of times gone by, thriving towns of denizens currently going about their day. Contradictory elements existing parallel to one another, yet separate. Just like light and twilight.
Once again, thank you for your organized thoughts on the game. One of the best videos I've seen on Twilight Princess, and one that wasn't fluffed up with superfluous phrasing and repetition. That is what I always appreciate about your videos - that they are to the point, but also very well detailed and purposeful. For further Zelda knowledge and analysis, I would recommend reading "A Comprehensive Theory of Majora's Mask" by Aaron Suduiko if you haven't read it already. Things I love about this game:
the presentation, graphics are horrible nowadays but the visual design doesn't get the credit it deserves whatsoever. the Key art and concept art for the game is wonderful and it translates brilliantly into the game.
the soundtrack. despite being mostly midi based its easily the zelda soundtrack up until that point with the most effort put into it. strangely its more sophisticated in terms of its structure, instrumentation, use of volume and tonal concepts when compared to something like a link to the past or even ocarina. Just now I'm finding a lot of really beautiful dissonances and implications i didn't notice when I played the game.
Animations and characterisation. There's just as much expressiveness in the movement and or dialogue of the main characters as there is in any other character beit an extra, npc, mini boss or generic enemy. compare the people in hyrule castle to the small community in ordon, postures, vocabulary and etiquette, it makes a clear distinction between these groups and different races are specially accentuated from one another, the way they move and their hand gestures during dialogue is integral to their visual designs.
Gameplay. Possibly the most dense and satisfying move set link has ever had (also assisted by the exaggerated animations, don't pretend like you didn't immitate all those finisher moves irl at least once each)
the practical applications of your items is limited outside of their respective dungeons yet none of them, (technically excluding the rods) are particularly uncalled for in combat, in fact i'd argue almost all of them are desirable to have in your UI. the bow is satisfying to use, explosive arrows are bad ass, the ball and chain is absurd and fun to use, they added sword fighting during horseback, its a damn fun game to play.
dungeons. most people will immediately point out arbiters grounds and how its just a rehash of the 4th OOT dungeon and completely ignore how structured, unique and balanced every dungeon is. One of my favorite parts is the introduction to these dungeons and how they have their own narrative that continues within that dungeon. The little monkeys lost and caged inside the giant tree, yetto and yetta fumbling around their mansion, that's something I remember from skyward sword where trying to replicate this idea resulted in interactions that felt bland, that they were there just to extend the run time and not to support the theme and narrative of that area.
so yeah its a good ass game and y'all should play it sometime.
