What do you think about "vaulting" collectibles? Are there real reasons to do it or is it taking things too far and forgetting what collecting is about? Let me know what you think!

Really depends on the insurance. Some of these assets can be 100k+ (as an example the one ring) and not replaceable. Insuring this stuff in your home is costly (usually around 1-2% of the collection value/year). As a result if it is fully insured, even 200/month for a collector makes sense.

This is to commodify items like Ian and Pat said, also to avoid sales tax. I haven't vaulted any of my cards, but if I had a high end card I could imagine vaulting it so I didn't have to worry about securing it at home... The fee to get it out is a thing, and I generally have low trust in others. So I'm a maybe, but a probably not.

I always wonder what it's worth... when you post a game to get valued, you have your value, so does the postal service which you will insure it for, then the company that values it.... what would the insurance company pay if it was lost in either direction? Post/pre value? What is your thoughts guys

Pat, eBay vault isn’t available for video games. Many commenters seem misinformed on this fact. eBay vault and “vaulting” are two different concepts that are conflated in the video.

Its kind of funny that the most valuable games I own are from the 90s when everyone was speculating on Beanie Babies and Comics which now basically have no value. If something is called a valuable collectible? Its probably not.

      @callak_9974 ปีที่แล้ว +3

All hobbies end up that way, the value comes later when people want to relive their childhoods. Think about comics originally, they were like 5 to 10 cents each, printed on the cheapest paper out there. Now some of them are worth over a million dollars.
Heck, sports cards originally were a bonus item in a pack of gum. The kids would buy the gum to get the card then chuck the gum since it was so bad. That's how sports cards got somewhat popular originally and they stopped making gum.

@@PatTheNESpunkyep, I’m sure there are even auction houses trying other creative ways to transact collectibles. but I think target market is the key differentiator here. We know that sealed collectors (and likely graded collectors) represents a very very small market; they go to auction houses. “Regular” collectors (majority) don’t- but they do use ebay. Summary: video game “vaulting+selling” is segregated to auction houses, the market for graded games is tiny, eBay vault does not accept games, and ebay vault only accepts graded products. I don’t see the concern. Even if vault did accept games, the market is tiny for graded games and probably not worth the transaction fees in most cases. I think a more interesting question is: if eBay offers vault for graded games, will that change the retro collecting scene? I personally think you might see a small bump in graded collecting due to awareness and not necessarily the service. But overall, I think it’d be minimal

This hobby has gotten so wild that I've been selling my collection off and washing my hands of this whole culture.
The amount of obvious babies I've run into that expect 20+ year old items to have zero damage (buy a bootleg, its the only real way to get something flawless anymore) and get all butthurt that "they have to find another one now", demanding refunds or threatening returns is just stupid. The really stupid thing to me is that everybody expects me to care about their life story (this is really nothing new), and complain that they don't have time to be hunting down better copies. If you don't have time to hunt for what you want to collect, you don't have time to collect. Period.
Pictures show exactly what you get, and they get ignored. I show the copy for sale working on actual hardware, people claim it doesn't work on their console. Tell me you don't do proper maintenance without telling me you don't do proper maintenance.
The absolute dumbest thing I've seen is this broad acceptance in the community for just throwing your collection into a box or tote and leaving it in their garage or attic, with nobody calling them out, is just insane to me. We've gone full circle! Games pulled out from garages, attics, basements, and bought up at local garage sales and flea markets only to go right back into garages, attics, and basements.
There is no self reflection in this community.

I think the sad thing is the expectation that the market is going to implode and we'll someday just forget about the NES or retro gaming history. It's a self fullfilling prohecy. Sure, collecting is getting out of reach of your average consumer, but that rarity ensures that the games will be taken care of and passed down to the next generation at all. Money is based laregly on what you believe in, those old piano rolls pats dad threw out could be worth a fortune today. But he didn't believe in them so nobody else did. Sure, maybe pat overcorrected buying and collecting things like he does. And maybe he refers to himself as a loser or whatever or it's all garbage blah balh. But pats additude towards collectables is a change in the right direction. I think it's funny pat is always against these large auctions, saying they're a bubble, when he has perhaps one of the most valuable NES collections in the world. It's almost like he doesn't believe in him self, and he hasn't got the recognition he deserves.

Interesting discussion. This also opens the door to things like bots affecting the prices of collectibles. I'd think someone has already figured out a way to do this with regular eBay auctions by now, but this could take it to a whole different level since there's no physical delivery involved - and since sites like eBay are often used to benchmark prices of collectibles, this would kinda suck the soul out of the market for actual human collectors.

Everyone needs to take a deep breath and step back. eBay vault is NOT available for video games-only trading cards for now. Why is that important? Because eBay vault is a solution to a problem, and that problem is NOT retro video games. Vault was likely created to make eBay the de facto place for online card transactions. With the amount of fraud, scams, charge backs on the platform, I doubt any serious card collector would feel safe dropping big money on eBay. Also, if you were to buy, say, a $25k baseball card, guess what that means? You need to store it, insure it and safeguard it. If you have many cards, that bill can rack up. However, if you make eBay your place to buy /store expensive cards, you get quite a bit of benefits. Storage, insurance, verification, and minimal fees. Not a bad deal. Also, we know many collectors eventually liquidate at some point and the biggest obstacle is how to sell. Vault gives you that option with a click of a button. And since eBay vault ONLY allows GRADES products, only a handful of retro gamers would even be interested in it.

You mentioned art. Art is kept in vaults, too. Lots of desirable art is never seen or hung. It's sold back and forth by rich people and their "investment" doesn't get taxed, so people just dump a ton of money into art in warehouses for financial reasons.

The sealed gaming market is very different then the card market. EBAY is not the 1st vault company. PWCC has had a card vault for years, and has been very successful. COMC is a marketplace where you have to send them your cards. And they have MILLIONS of cards in there database. There is a bigger market of people who want to own a Jordan rookie but don’t want to have store it then you would think. I don’t think this would work for games but is it already proven to work for cards

The concept of collecting video games that I'll never get to hold in my own hands, and only own in the hopes that I can sell them for more than I paid I just find preposterous. When I buy a game it is because I wish to play it. I don't care about what it might be worth at a later date. I recently replaced all the labels on my Atari 2600 collection. My brother mentioned that they are all worth less now. I don't f'ing care. I wanted them to look nice. I wanted to have the collection I could have only dreamed about as a kid, not a collection of 40+ year old worn out labels that look like crap. All of my consoles and cartridges have been refurbished to look like new. That is worth far more to me than some future perceived value that someone else might be willing to pay for something I never intend to sell anyway.

The problem is collecting is getting known. I don't just mean among new collectors/investors but by criminals too. A friend was robbed. They took all of his magic the gathering cards, comics, and games.
He didn't have any expensively rare comics, games, or magic cards. Doesn't matter to thieves because they know it's supposed to be worth money because people are buying these things for MILLIONS OF DOLLARS per every news story shared around on social media.
What's funny was his actual expensive collections weren't even touched because people don't discuss watch/clock collecting.
It's hard to justify keeping your collection in your home. Another friend just had to put his guitar collection (pedals and guitars) in a vault, despite him needing them regularly, because he was recently robbed too. They didn't take his guitar gear, thankfully. He's a touring musician in a small band so he spends a lot of time away from home. In fact in the guitar world it's now highly recommended you find cheap pedals to replace your main pedals on your pedal board because guitar pedal theft is starting to rise. Especially as stories of some of the rare ones spread. What sucks is this is resorting in live shows sounding slightly off and sometimes worse. Especially if you need to combine cheap pedals to match your modified pedals, because no one mods Flammas.

6:11 Everything on that chart is and will change in one or two years AFTER everyone has their items in there and are too busy or lazy to deal with taking them out. So storage fee's no? (Yes there are of course going to be storage fee's in a year or two). People once invested after a while will of course pay the additional fee's Ebay changes. Its a system completely fabricated to do one thing. Make Ebay money which use to be your money. That's it.

This is horrific for collecting hobbies. Make no mistake, the commodification of collectibles is NOT part of a hobby. The individuals are NOT collectors, they're investors. This not only grossly perverts value, but it artificially inflates cost for the actual collectors to participate in a hobby. It's also poisoning the minds of a lot of real collectors. SO MANY care about what grade they can get for a toy or comic they will never hold again outside of an acrylic case. Value and worth and condition are part of these hobbies, but to the degree they're focused on today is just sad and pathetic.

This "vault" system is gross to actual collectors, the fact that nostalgia goods have been turned into "stocks" and are only cared about for their potential increase in value is simply a bastardization of how these items became valuable in the first place.
For some dumb reason I thought this might, just might be one of those "vaults" where the storefront will keep items you buy and then you could get the items in your vault shipped all at once to save on from the multiple shipping fees you would have incurred for multiple items from multiple sellers within said storefront.

I do keep CDs, DVDs, and games in drawers and shoe boxes. Hard copies are the best in having ownership to never be altered at any time.

Unless stored in a vacuum with no light, all disc and cartridge based media will degrade and eventually not work. Collecting this stuff is in the end a waste of time unless u do it for short term profits...

This is just like buying gold and not actually physically keeping the metal at your home.
Collectables like video games are way too volatile though. With precious metals you know will always hold their value. Video games and other similar collectables may be worth a lot of money now but might not hold the same value in 20 plus years.
I collect things because they make me happy to own and I enjoy searching for things I want in the wild. I don't collect these things for monetary value, as I don't intend to sell them.

You guys dove way into this. It’s just a way for eBay to make sure things are bought and sold through their site. Fraud protection. Worst case you ask for your card. That’s it. Buy resell. Easy.

Perfect opportunity for a little fraud for the vaulting company. A dishonest vaulting company could hav 10x of a similiar sealed game, and if they are just sitting in the vault they could sell 50% of these flr a little extra money. No one will notice before eveyone decides to "withdraw" the games from the vault...

The first day I heard about the vault for cards on ebay I knew a vault for video games was coming. This is just like nfts tied to real life assets. It is absolutely the future of retro game collecting. People value space. I would rather not have it in my house if I dont play it.

I sold my collection about 7 years ago because guess what… it’s not fun anymore. TH-camrs like yourself might have inadvertently ruined it but I hold nothing against you Pat and Ian… just wish I was back at tag sales seeing Vectrex consoles for $50-$75 because even older people know the costs now… storing things in a vault is the absolute end of the hobby for me! Enjoy ruining things for real collectors scum bags (pat and Ian not actual scum bags)

    • @David-cj3zz

Lol. They helped drive up prices. Ask Pat where his collection is. Dude talks about how numbers are inflated. Didn't stop him from selling at a peak.
Between their gaslighting of other collectors and creators. Their hypocrisy regarding the collectors market. And pat not understanding basic concepts which Ian has to explain to him while also being ill informed. I think I'm done with this channel. And I see the numbers tell me I'm not alone.

Not sure about money laundering, but if this eventually leads people start selling things they actually have it'll be eerily reminiscent of the birth of fiat currency and fractional reserve banking.

Hello Pat my name is Isaiah and I have something important to say to you. You see one day the earth will be taken over not by a human but by evil spirits and their leader Satan who will pretend to be God and he will give you a mark if you and your loved ones take it you will all be goners. But there is hope that hope is Jesus and he loves you and like any father he wants to help you and keep you safe especially from the devil. But I can not force you to believe the choice is ultimately yours have a nice day Shalom Shalom.
