The Cinemassacre Podcast is coming THIS Tuesday night to the channel. It's an hour long video podcast, but the audio version will be posted wherever podcasts are heard.
I always appreciate seeing these behind-the-scenes looks at how it all comes together. It helps people see just how much effort really goes into everything you do!
I loved this episode. It's really cool to see all the behind the scenes stuff and it is so informative on what really goes on in the day to day of making all of this happen. Like Scrub Lord said, it feels like an annual update. I think it would be cool to see one of these every year. It's really great to see that James is really enjoying doing this. As he (and many others) have mentioned, there was a feeling of burnout in some episodes. I don't mind the simple vids myself. From the beginning, that was what made it fun for me. It brought me back to those days of sitting in front of the TV, grinding through a game, swearing at it and throwing controllers because, "it's not fair!" So for the high production vids, I'll just take them as bonuses. Here's to keeping on.
That ceiling air flow unit is why you're getting a buzzing feedback on the microphone. There's no shielding on the motor. That combined with a drop ceiling is what is causing harmonics.
It’s crazy to think that he has made 300+ videos and has 20 years of movie making experience, but he can’t figure out simple things like his microphone or how to set up a PC that isn’t Mac. I always thought James was more technologically advanced with his background in film and all he had to do shown in Cinemassacre 200, but maybe he just stopped caring after a certain point since he has a family and settled down.
If every AVGN episode was an “epic” episode, they wouldn’t be special anymore. As someone who’s been watching AVGN since 2007, the TMNT and Silver Surfer episodes are still some of my favorites. Glad you’re still doing what you do, James.
The basic episodes don't get enough love. AVGN the show started out as basic episodes and some of the best episodes of all times are the basic episodes.
Can't believe this video led to the mental breakdown of at least 1 person and subsequently to the creation of one of the most fascinating pieces of youtube art.
I might be one of the odd ones out here but I do prefer the basic episodes. To me the Nerd was always about him playing a game, drinking beer and being angry at it. That's enough for me to be satisfied.
Honestly I like them too they help build the nerd as a more realistic character living his everyday life and make the times when we do get a big episode more impactfull than if we were to the big ones everytime.
In the context of James talking about “People like to point out when there are simpler episodes [like it’s a bad thing]”, am I the only one who generally prefers the simpler episodes? Like I like Action 52 and Super Pitfall more than I liked Rob the Robot or Crazy Castle (which were both still great episodes)
I think the basic episodes are plenty entertaining, especially for a chill rewatch, and they make me appreciate the epic ones even more when they come along.
He's probably been doing Cinemassacre since 2005 but not officially doing AVGN official episodes not until 2006 up until now trust me I've been paying attention
@@Thifurious I’m 31, I found James’ content when I was 15. It’s fun to see how’s it’s evolved over the years. Some videos are really memorable, like his review of the wizard and SMB3, as well as his fight against the nostalgia critic around 2008.
I've actually always preferred the more simple episodes, they are always straight and to the point with comedic bits thrown in. To me they capture more of the spirit of AVGN but I still love the cinematic stuff too.

0:05 And thank you James Rolfe for 15 years (actually 16 years now) worth of memes because even this behind-the-scenes video has only inadvertently created even more memes due to his impractical set up.
I can’t imagine what your electricity bill is with all this equipment in your nerd room, James. I’m glad your show is still going strong today. Love your videos man!
It's probably not that bad. LEDs are really efficient, and it's not like he has all of his consoles and TVs running when he's making an episode. For extra energy savings, and for general protection of the equipment, he could turn off all the power strips he's not using. Even if he doesn't, all of them together would only total a few watts.
He lost his vigor over the years, but he never stopped. He cannot drink 20 rolling rocks every video. He can't get his face red with anger. But no matter what happens, he will always take you back to the past.
I'd be really concerned if he were anything like his character in reality (at least outside of occasional moments of extreme frustration like the onion problem)!
I think that James is making it more difficult than it has to be. In the early days, the lighting and sound wasn’t perfect, was really basic and the game room was hardly a game room. It was just an ordinary room with some games and some posters on the walls. Ironically, those were the best episodes.
For what it's worth, I like the "basic" nerd episodes quite a bit. Reviewing old games with some colorful language and insults thrown in is one of the best parts of the series. The skits are just an added extra, imo. It's not necessary for its enjoyment at all. So James, don't worry! I'm pretty sure most of us won't mind if you save your "big and wacky" episodes for once every blue moon. We enjoy your work regardless!
@@Wundarrphul No Kyle came back to the AVGN for one episode where the AVGN character brought him back to life with his NES controller, but that was a long time ago.

The premise of the avgn was to enjoy the nostalgia of days gone by. The irony is that now the nostalgia I feel is for the old avgn episodes. The epic videos are always great and very entertaining but nothing quite hits the spot like those simpler times drinking a beer and getting frustrated at gameplay. When I think of all my favourite episodes, they're nearly all "basic" ones. As long as James is passionate and into it it makes all the difference. Think Castlevania, Ghosts N Goblins. I'm genuinely happy he's still doing this.
Same! I think it works great to balance the basic episodes withe the crazy ones, as James said. The entire premise of the series from the beginning was showing game footage and ranting about it. That was the simple idea that we all loved and it still works just as well today.
The basics are the bests in my opinion. They give me a feeling like Im a kid again with my friend in the basement just talking and playing video games.
Thank you, James. I've been a fan for years, and I still enjoy your AVGN episodes. I do not mind basic episodes at all, and I fully understand why not all episodes can be big and epic productions. Frankly, I do enjoy many of the more basic episodes like the Super Pitfall one. So just keep doing what you are doing, and thanks again.
True that. I feel it's super awesome of him to respond to complaints though. You can tell he cares about this stuff beyond just making them and putting them out.
At the very least, it shows that he's passionate enough about his craft to bring intricate methods to the table! Not many can say they'd have the same amount of patience even!
Glad to see he's not burnt out from it. I wondered if he secretly hates doing this character but it's nice to see he's enjoying his family and this is supporting it. I've been on TH-cam since 2005 so he's been with me half my life and AVGN has always made me smile, thanks James!
This is like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde meets Super Pitfall of youtube production setups. There are 16 year old girls that have more efficient camera/lighting setups that not only look better, but allow for a lot more flexibility in shooting styles. This is legit nuts.
James, thank you for everything you do and have done. You’re a true work horse. The things you and the crews do to keep the viewers entertained is completely paramount! On a side note, that onion scene reminded me of the Cinemassacre 200 moment when you were doing the closet scene. Thought that was hilarious! Big love from your neck of the woods of NJ 🖤
I know this is a very old ep, but I'm surprised he hasn't rigged his ceiling with like rollers and attched the lights to said rollers. Letting him just roll the lights around when see fit instead of like wire hanging.
They make ceiling lights, yet he tapes his lights to the ceiling. I mean, I've seen worse, but for a guy who's been doing this for 15 or so years and use to make a desk lamp work for lighting, this is VERY messy and inefficient.
Well, for one, we don't know on what kind of budget he's working on, and secondly, he is still doing all of these with proper games, consoles and all the related equipment. Most other reviewers set a few things up for shots, but they are doing emulators, so I feel like there's a big diference there too. I'm willing to bet there's a ton that would only ever be practical to change if he was to move location.
Out of all the TH-camrs out there, James Rolfe and less than a handful of others are the only ones I would ever truly like to meet in person and shake the hands of.
Agreed. Other TH-camrs I'd like to meet are Stevie T and the Krachmucker TV guy, and that's it. Doug Walker was one of them, too... But then youknowwhat happened... 🤦♂️
Hi James, I havent watched your videos in a while. I discovered this video because of Folding Ideas. I just wanted to say that your content has meant a ton to me for many many years. As far as I can tell, you are one of the hardest-working content creators on the Internet. I have so much admiration for your work and hope you realise that the people hating your content are a loud, obnoxious *minority*. If this career brings you joy, please do this forever. I have absolutely no issues with basic episodes. Sometimes i wanna see a skit and sometimes I wanna hear a discussion about a video game. And if one day you feel the need to step away, that is so okay. Best of luck, bud.
James, I've been a fan since the beginning and love these-behind-the scenes videos! I think I speak for many when I say you should put out as much or as little as you see fit. Cinemassacre is your creation and whatever you want to do (or not do) with it is your right. I'll be watching regardless. PS: I think the Fear and Loathing episode is one of your best ever.
I’ve been around since nearly the beginning. I’ve always appreciated that you do the work that makes you fulfilled and I think people see your passion. And you don’t follow the fickle whims of algorithms or whatever. I can pull up a 10 year old episode and still enjoy it just as much as last month’s episode. Just know that you got me as a fan for as long as you put out content.
James, you are allowed to do wathever the f*** you want. You are pioneer and a 15 year man in a medium that most people only can sustain around 2 or 3 years. Simple episodes are great, btw.
This is interesting, James! We Love The Nerd but we also admire James, the shy, organized, mild mannered director/actor behind the character. It is really interesting to have this insider view into how you work.
I find that the Nerd episodes have lost their sense of being organic. They seem too rehearsed. I'd much prefer a toned down, less scripted episode where you're actually playing the game and reacting on the fly - rather than videoing you holding a controller where you're not even playing the game. I think most people on here would prefer the older Nerd videos where it's just you ranting. Food for thought.
Hey James. Just want to let you know that I've been a fan since 2007. I kept watching every episode upon release since I discovered you until now. I was 13 years old back then and I'm 27 now. I've never missed an episode. Just to give you different opinion from a long time fan regarding those who complain about the recent episodes, I never came to the same conclusion that the recent episodes were going stale until I've read those type of comments. I still enjoyed every episode just like the time I discovered you back in 2007.
I am so happy that James is taking his work/life balance seriously. He still takes his work seriously, but also takes the time for his family. I'll stick around for another 15 years if he keeps making videos.
This room has been such a big part of my life. AVGN is one of my biggest inspirations and James always keeps it real. I use the Everdrive as well! I love it so much!
Hey, you're allowed to do a basic episodes, or do them less often, we'll still be here waiting for your videos and supporting you :) Can't wait for monster madness and the book!

Exactly.
The trolls are getting out of hand anymore....
True that. I feel it's super awesome of him to respond to complaints though. You can tell he cares about this stuff beyond just making them and putting them out.
Who ever thought this was an effective method of filming..
At the very least, it shows that he's passionate enough about his craft to bring intricate methods to the table! Not many can say they'd have the same amount of patience even!
@@BlazeTheGamer1if anything after decades of filming you’d expect him to have these basic things on lock
Glad to see he's not burnt out from it. I wondered if he secretly hates doing this character but it's nice to see he's enjoying his family and this is supporting it. I've been on TH-cam since 2005 so he's been with me half my life and AVGN has always made me smile, thanks James!
Neither of you watched the video clearly.
@@Orpheusftw tell me you've never watch an AVGN episode without telling me you've never watched an AVGN episode....really isnt into video games? Wow
He's just not as focused on it as much because he has a wife and children
The nerd is one of the greatest yt productions of all time
the greatest and possibly the longest running yt production of all time.
"there goes the onion" has to be my favorite thing I have ever heard
I wanted to help so bad haha. I was thinking stick a small broken off pencil in it, and tape the belt on the inside...but, "there goes the onion."
This is like the Dr. Jekyll and Mr Hyde meets Super Pitfall of youtube production setups. There are 16 year old girls that have more efficient camera/lighting setups that not only look better, but allow for a lot more flexibility in shooting styles. This is legit nuts.
That's how sad and pathetic this setup is.
James, thank you for everything you do and have done. You’re a true work horse. The things you and the crews do to keep the viewers entertained is completely paramount! On a side note, that onion scene reminded me of the Cinemassacre 200 moment when you were doing the closet scene. Thought that was hilarious! Big love from your neck of the woods of NJ 🖤
it just goes to show that James earns every penny he gets, cause he invests a ton of time and money where a lot of tubers wouldnt even fathom doing.
I live in NJ too
love these kind of videos!
I know this is a very old ep, but I'm surprised he hasn't rigged his ceiling with like rollers and attched the lights to said rollers. Letting him just roll the lights around when see fit instead of like wire hanging.
I can't help but feel that this... is the most inefficient setup I've ever seen.
It could be easily imoroved! I was shocked to see him working like that.... in 2021!!!
If his room was a game, then its broken code would rival the likes of Fallout 76
Then you haven't seen many inefficient setups.
the book is comming. im sorry april
7:14 There it is, the legend
It is a wrong thing
Came here looking for it, thanks

Out of all the TH-camrs out there, James Rolfe and less than a handful of others are the only ones I would ever truly like to meet in person and shake the hands of.
@Charged Hellhammer Was thinking the exact same thing. Rolling Rock's on me guys. Or a proper pint!
Agreed. Other TH-camrs I'd like to meet are Stevie T and the Krachmucker TV guy, and that's it. Doug Walker was one of them, too... But then youknowwhat happened... 🤦♂️

sorry, did you "drill" a hole in your tough 80's wood or did you chop a hole in the tough 80's wood? Just curious.
He broke a hole through it using a Robertson screwdriver.
There goes the onion
17:33 This is literally the only time I've seen him genuinely swear in anger. I was kinda unnerved by this unnatural moment.
Also the funniest part of the video. I don't know but I have a sense of humor of a lot of swearing and moments like this.
Bimmy saw Doc Brown’s over complicated machine for serving dog food and took it as an instruction manual
When I started watching you I wasn't even in highschool. Now I'm almost 30. Thanks for always taking me back to the past.
He can honestly talk about anything and I'm interested in what he has to say
James, a hole saw is your friend.
Could you imagine working with James in an office? He wouldn't be able to handle it.
Why's that? Most office setups are less complicated than this.
Because it seems like everything would have to be set up his way@@HOTD108_
@@HOTD108_ most offices dont have video production equipment
How is this 2021 and not 1997?
James Rolfe favorite Beatles album? “Help!”
"there goes the onion"
"since then we've all been vaccinated"
this surely is a video
I literally could not stop laughing watching James struggle with that onion!
James, you are allowed to do wathever the f*** you want. You are pioneer and a 15 year man in a medium that most people only can sustain around 2 or 3 years. Simple episodes are great, btw.
I didnt like the vegas episode cause I didnt understand the reference
Angry Onion Nerd
This is interesting, James! We Love The Nerd but we also admire James, the shy, organized, mild mannered director/actor behind the character. It is really interesting to have this insider view into how you work.
I find that the Nerd episodes have lost their sense of being organic. They seem too rehearsed. I'd much prefer a toned down, less scripted episode where you're actually playing the game and reacting on the fly - rather than videoing you holding a controller where you're not even playing the game. I think most people on here would prefer the older Nerd videos where it's just you ranting. Food for thought.
Old nerd episodes are the best. You are 100% correct in your statements
James is unable to do things unscripted. Have you ever watched an interview with him? It's unbearable. Mike can do this, not James
James can't quit until he's as old as he was portrayed to be in the Christmas Carol episode.
SO TRUE
And review Banana Blitz and Boogie proper!
Just so many moments that make you ask "Whyyy??".
Dude just keep it simple, that’s probably what 80% of your fan base wants, don’t over think it
Did you watch this video at all?
Considering 50% of the viewers left, i don't think thats true hahaha
Same here!! I can't believe I've been watching for so long; to this day i'm excited when he uploads.
Same here!
Ditto.
I am so happy that James is taking his work/life balance seriously. He still takes his work seriously, but also takes the time for his family. I'll stick around for another 15 years if he keeps making videos.
Imagine if he began to use his old camera truly encapsulating the Aesthetic of the earlier seasons
And mics!
That would be awesome!
James, the work you do is absolutely incredible. Seeing the behind the scenes stuff is very humbling and appreciated. Rock on dude.
I literally JUST watched the 2013 tour and wondered
“I wonder when he’s gonna make a new one?”
And then this.

Dude you need a better technical team.
