- First ever 19:42 + 6/6 NTSC Main Category WRs has once again been achieved! This run features a ton of super tight framerules, and I'm very happy I was able to play perfectly alongside my route and save all of them I was going for. As clean as this run is, there are still plenty of levels to save time in, and I'd love to eventually push this category all the way down to a 19:3x in the future!

collision with blocks / coins at that Y level are a bit glitchy due to a flaw in the game's code, so with a frame perfect jump off of the ground, you can just straight up jump through the coin

At 19:15 there's a palette glitch one frame before Mario does the face-forward pose to go down the pipe. His skin turns gray and his hat turns red. I wonder what causes that.
I have an idea why that can be a thing. Sprite of Mario and sprite of fireball were at the same place and maybe because of console limitations Mario's sprite has changed colors. I don't know if that's a reason or not, but it makes sense for me.

this is a common thing that happens in all-stars when entering pipes. i have no clue why it happens, but i'm certain it has nothing to do with the fireball because this happens in any% as well
@@Niftski I know NES didn't have the RAM for double-buffering, so that's kind of surprising. I wonder if the palette actually changed in the middle of the frame or something. Very interesting. Somehow, the palette changes one frame before Mario goes down the pipe. But it must happen after the player pushes the button, because how else would the game know to glitch?

sometimes he grabs the flag facing backwards. how does he do it and what does it achieve?why does he not do it all the time
I don't believe he ever grabbed it backwards, but you might mean the times when he went for the Flagpole Glitch? Like was done in the first level for example.
This is a glitch done by clipping into the bottom of the flagpole to avoid having the flag go down the whole way. It's very precise and requires a setup to do it. At 0:27 you can see that he slows down a little bit when jumping up the stairs, this is part of the setup.
Though in many levels, no consistent setup exists for the glitch. There can also be other reasons why it doesn't save time. You need to slow down a bit to do it, so in a level like 3-1 at 5:34, slowing down to do the glitch would have given a 6 at the end of the timer, which means 6 fireworks and they are very slow to get.
I'm however no expert, especially not for All-Stars, so some things here might not be 100% accurate. But should give the general idea I hope =).

In all-stars (only the japanese version for whatever reason), its possible to grab the flag backwards. This usually requires hitting a powerup to work, but sometimes you dont need to (depends on level). In some levels, like 3-2, 3-3, and 1-2, you cant grab the flag backwards no matter what you do, so backwards flagpole isn’t done.

it's tough to count and generally most of the run isn't frame perfect, but there are 2 fpgs and a frame perfect pipejump in 1-2 which is at least 5-10

All Stars version works a bit different. There was a thing to land on the right side of the flagpole so Mario wouldn't need to turn after the flagpole is lowered.

grabbing the middle of the flag is never faster, but i do it for swag in levels where the framerule remainder is high for fun since it doesn't lose time
