Mario 64 Speedrunner reacts to DS Version Speedrun. However, instead of Simply reacting, I'm going to be speedrunning Mario 64 DS! SM64 speedrunning has been a huge part of the channel, but I've never played Super Mario 64 DS. I've never done Super Mario 64 DS minigames before or have gotten a Super Mario 64 DS world record. What remains the same from SM64 Nintendo 64 edition to the DS edition? Let's find out by speedrunning SM64 DS version!

Watching one of the best Mario 64 players in the world struggle so hard on the DS version of the same game is so great
It's like witnessing the laws of physics being ignored right in front of your eyes.

The DS version of 64 means a lot to me, it's like one of the first ds games I remember playing. I can't remember much about the content besides the glass spheres (which you showed in the video) but I still don't think i've completed the game yet. My cartridge went missing a few years ago and I just never saw it again. Funnily enough I have 100% normal mario 64
I remember losing mine and finally finding it again. Nothing matched that joy when I was little lol
i still have mine and remember trying to get 3 150 star files, i did the first two but i think i never finished the last one

@@H128 each course has 7 stars + 100 coins instead of 6 + 100 coins the 7th new star is always a silver stars or switch star in bomb-omb battlefield however the new bomb-omb king fight is the first star to accomadate the fact yoshi cant grab and you start with yoshi but they didnt want to remove the original fight so the old fight where you had to get behind him and throw him was made a rematch for star number 4 and they just removed the island star for it which is fair that star was probably the least involved star of the course and the island was used in other stars

I always appreciated how much imagination was in this game. It wasn't ever trying to replace the original, but be a completely insane version of it. I always enjoyed having the other characters even if they were a little busted. The DS controls really hold it back especially with the d pad instead of analog controls, and that's honestly a shame because I think it would be tremendously more fun with better controls. Overall, I was always surprised by this game because I thought it would be a lazy port, but it's really so much more than that

I loved the variety of powerups.
Getting the ability to access shit like vanish and metal outside of a few levels each allows for a bunch of creative use to collect certain stars.

But the artstyle is undeniably better.

I played this game a lot as a kid and I remember when there was a rumor that Waluigi was secretly in the game somewhere. I was a very gullible child and kept stubbornly trying to find his door way longer than I’d like to admit
Considering there’s the room with Mario Luigi and Wario in it, I believed he was just cut from the game. I used Action Replay to get through the one unlabeled door and was sorely disappointed.
Yeah you basically collect all the sparkling rabbits in the game with the keys and you’ll unlock it and get … 1 star
Alot of people fell for the waluigi stuff including myself. I tried every fake theory that appeared on TH-cam
You can't imagine the amount of hours that it took me and my brother to find some of the secrets in this game, Luigi took so many hours. It's amazing how much we tried to find secrets even though some didn't exist we had a lot of fun searching them
@@hexicalcat4937 Yeah, it is pretty dumb that there is not even a secret level in there for all that effort. Felt like a very non-Nintendo move to disregard all that time spent getting the door. I would have just preferred anything over exiting with a star. Makes the door completely useless after you use it. But a level could have at least been revisitable.

Fun fact, the Wii U version's got a mod made by the homebrew community which remaps the control stick to the pseudo-joystick touch screen controls.
There's also a mod for the game on emulator that gives it full analog support.

@@Ceaugothe d pad controls only have 8 directions but there’s also an option to use the touch screen to move, and that has full analog capabilities

I wish they would re-release the DS version with actual good controls. It added so many cool things, but the controls just suck so bad that it's not fun to play.
In the meantime you can always play it on PC with a hack that gives it actually good controls.
Playing it on a 3ds /2ds makes it a lot better I got all 150 stars
i would like some kind of port or remake if they removed the stupid restrictions of only certain characters being able to use some powers, and only being able to do stuff like beating the game with mario, never liked that

Mario 64 DS was the first and only version of Mario 64 I've personally played. I absolutely adore it.
Say what you will about the DS version's controls, but the original feels like a huge downgrade without everything the DS version added.
@@Blah3210 true. And I also prefer the DS controls over the original version because that's the one I'm used to. But besides that, the DS version also looks way prettier in my opinion :)
@@DescendDab Also true. All of the models were updated to be in line with how the characters are actually supposed to look. The difference between the old Bowser and new is massive.

Super Mario 64 had a lot of models that were actually just sprites trying to look 3D and it sticks out like a sore thumb in many cases.
DS is still the only version ive played. The minigames are fire. As a kid, this shit was mindblowing.
This version tripped me out as a kid everything felt new and unnatural after seeing my brother beat this game on the 64 like 4 years before I got this DS version but then again I was like 8 years old lol
Never had this game but me and me sister used to get mad competitive on New Super Mario Bros minigames. absolute classics

Played the original as a kid for years but I was obsessed with this version when I got it for Christmas 2005. The developers definitely needed a lesson in “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” for many aspects, but this game is leaps better than the original.

@@toxic_revenant3 yeah if you like vastly inferior controls and movement. The movement is one of the main things that made the original so great and the main thing that makes it still just as fun to play today as it was when it released. Same can't be said about the DS version though where the movement is so awful that it makes it not fun to play, there were many great things that were added to the DS version but the movement and controls really hold it back, especially when the movement and controls were so good in the original.
@@tessaPMpro I mean, if you mod it, you can emulate the touchscreen analog with a real joystick.
@@Medachod even then, I have played it on a 3DS with the analogue and while it does control much better, the movement in the DS version is just inherently bad regardless of whether you're using a D-pad or analogue.
@@tessaPMpro Not just the literal aspect of it being a joystick well retaining digital movement. I meant that you can mod it so the touchscreen analog, which is real analog, can be controlled with a joystick and used that way instead of using the thumbpad that you had to use before with the DS to simulate it.
I've been watching simply for years now, I recently boot up my 64 and decided to go into Mario and get all 120 stars thinking idk, maybe 5 hours without looking up any strats just being a filthy youtube watcher. Nope. I'm like 4 hours in with 50 stars. This is what it felt like.
The movement is a lot more difficult than speedrunners make it look.
They should’ve released a HD version of the DS game for the switch with all the playable characters. They missed one there

the DS version was the first time i ever managed to beat a mario game as a kid. felt so good. i only reached like 129 Stars though after that because i had no internet access yet to help me out and wasn't that good at playing games. also really enjoyed the minigames that came with it. going back to it now would probably feel bad to play but back then it was a blast

I recommend playing it again. I played on a 3DS with a flash card loaded with roms and this game was on there and it was pretty fun to revisit it. I actually got to 146 stars in a few days but got stuck because a few of the 100 coin star challenges were difficult
Control issues aside, I still have a bunch of nostalgia for this version. It has its own charm to it
Uh... I 100%'d SM64DS when I was 14 and I genuinely do not remember ever once figuring out that you could turn enemies into eggs with Yoshi.
It was a really fun game though!

The original DS came with a wrist strap with a thumbpad that while on your thumb allowed pseudo-analog control via the touchscreen.
This game and that thumbpad are what convinced me to get a DS to begin with. I have a 3DS in my pocket as I type this.
Not sure what hardware you're using but if you have an analog supplement, you can change controls in options and not need the run button.
Growing up this was the version of Mario 64 I played! I never tried the N64 version so this is so nostalgic for me
I like the DS version a lot. It has so much additional content. I love the ability to transform into the different characters and play as them.
This version was the first version I played in my youth. Way more nostalgic than the original for me. And it has cutom bosses, like the big goomba!

I've only played the ds version as a kid and it was so nostalgic for me then I learned some of the 1 star speedrunning tricks and it was so fun I love unlocking the new characters wish they had waluigi I used to believe it was possible to unlock him cause of all the rumors

I had the 2 versions with their console, I prefer and preferred the n64 version and I've played the n64 a whole lot more, especially cuz my ds broke, I've 100% both versions tho in emulator, I've believed the Luigi in sm64 and Waluigi in sm64ds and for the ds the weird hole in peach's castle didnt help at all
If you ask me why I prefer the n64 version, well the run button on the ds ver didn't help at all in helping me enjoy the game

Some AAA devs give the term remastered a bad name by slapping it onto a port with a higher resolution and very slight graphical updates because "Remastered" sounds better as a buzzword than just calling something a port.
@@Robbie_Haruna Super Mario 64 DS itself is a semi-remake. Its entirety was not built from the ground up, a huge chunk of the game itself was ported over from the N64 version. And TH-camrs have beaten both the N64 and DS version showing it doesn’t play different enough to complete both versions at the same time. Just want to clear this misconception up.

The DS version has so much potential for speed running tho, the introduction of new characters that have many abilities to earn the 100% category is crazy considering the abilities leading to strats to get different stars for different worlds
This is the only version I knew of as a kid and I loved it!

Tbf you never had to use it, most levels where you had to go up into the air to get something, you could also get the wing cap so it was redundant

While you were asking why the balloon flower was in the game in the first bowser stage, it only lead me to ask, why was there a metal cap there originally
Because there was a red coin there, but also fire, metal mario is immune to fire

The only failure of this game was that it didn't include Waluigi as a super-duper-secret character. That 4th door was begging to be purple, and the ideas online about how he could be attained were crazy cool, with a secret Petey Piranha fight in a secret world hidden behind the castle's outdoor stained glass pane.
I'm one of those people who started with the DS version.
I tried to play the original a few months ago and it just...it feels weird.
Like it misses a lot of modern conveniences, but also trying to do moves feel harder?
Like diving and backflips and different to pull off, and I still can't perform a backflip due to disability issues (that's more a persistent issue in every Mario game).
Still, I do think the DS version has its own merits. Shame it doesn't get as much love.
I'm also amazed how many 64 fans and speedrunners aren't aware of some of the teleports in both games.
It's faster to use glitches, but I always used the flowerbed teleport to skip ahead 😅.

I used to play the original game in the N64 my mom gave me, when the Ds version got released I was still a kid and discovering it with all the stuff it added was mindblowing, because I played the n64 version for sooo long that having more content for that game was a dream becoming real

The DS had no analog stick, so deadzones weren't a thing.
D-pad was digital, the button was either actuated, or it wasn't. No in-between values.
So the run button was how you conveyed walk over run on digital controls.
The touch controls did have more fine-tuning.

@Simply: Only the third Bowser door need mario unless you used glitch. In Bowser in the fire sea, you only need mario to unseal the door, after that you can go in as any character
