@@H128 each course has 7 stars + 100 coins instead of 6 + 100 coins the 7th new star is always a silver stars or switch star in bomb-omb battlefield however the new bomb-omb king fight is the first star to accomadate the fact yoshi cant grab and you start with yoshi but they didnt want to remove the original fight so the old fight where you had to get behind him and throw him was made a rematch for star number 4 and they just removed the island star for it which is fair that star was probably the least involved star of the course and the island was used in other stars

I always appreciated how much imagination was in this game. It wasn't ever trying to replace the original, but be a completely insane version of it. I always enjoyed having the other characters even if they were a little busted. The DS controls really hold it back especially with the d pad instead of analog controls, and that's honestly a shame because I think it would be tremendously more fun with better controls. Overall, I was always surprised by this game because I thought it would be a lazy port, but it's really so much more than that
I loved the variety of powerups. Getting the ability to access shit like vanish and metal outside of a few levels each allows for a bunch of creative use to collect certain stars.

You can't imagine the amount of hours that it took me and my brother to find some of the secrets in this game, Luigi took so many hours. It's amazing how much we tried to find secrets even though some didn't exist we had a lot of fun searching them

They did a similar thing on the 3DS! There’s a cheat code that you can install to TwilightMenu that essentially maps the circle pad to the touch screen controls, and it even maps the little C-stick nub on the New 3DS models to make it an actual camera stick
There’s also one for 3DS now. It also maps the camera controls to ZL/ZR and the C stick on the New 3DS, though X and Y on an original 3DS also works fine.

I've been watching simply for years now, I recently boot up my 64 and decided to go into Mario and get all 120 stars thinking idk, maybe 5 hours without looking up any strats just being a filthy youtube watcher. Nope. I'm like 4 hours in with 50 stars. This is what it felt like.
Uh... I 100%'d SM64DS when I was 14 and I genuinely do not remember ever once figuring out that you could turn enemies into eggs with Yoshi. It was a really fun game though!

I recommend playing it again. I played on a 3DS with a flash card loaded with roms and this game was on there and it was pretty fun to revisit it. I actually got to 146 stars in a few days but got stuck because a few of the 100 coin star challenges were difficult
The original DS came with a wrist strap with a thumbpad that while on your thumb allowed pseudo-analog control via the touchscreen. This game and that thumbpad are what convinced me to get a DS to begin with. I have a 3DS in my pocket as I type this. Not sure what hardware you're using but if you have an analog supplement, you can change controls in options and not need the run button.

A remake is when the game is remade from the ground up and plays very differently from the original (like this game.) Some AAA devs give the term remastered a bad name by slapping it onto a port with a higher resolution and very slight graphical updates because "Remastered" sounds better as a buzzword than just calling something a port.

The only failure of this game was that it didn't include Waluigi as a super-duper-secret character. That 4th door was begging to be purple, and the ideas online about how he could be attained were crazy cool, with a secret Petey Piranha fight in a secret world hidden behind the castle's outdoor stained glass pane.
My friend gave me this game as a gift for my birthday back in the golden days of the ds. I never really loved it because i sucked at it. Happy to see you playing it.
I'm one of those people who started with the DS version. I tried to play the original a few months ago and it just...it feels weird. Like it misses a lot of modern conveniences, but also trying to do moves feel harder? Like diving and backflips and different to pull off, and I still can't perform a backflip due to disability issues (that's more a persistent issue in every Mario game). Still, I do think the DS version has its own merits. Shame it doesn't get as much love. I'm also amazed how many 64 fans and speedrunners aren't aware of some of the teleports in both games. It's faster to use glitches, but I always used the flowerbed teleport to skip ahead 😅.

I had the 2 versions with their console, I prefer and preferred the n64 version and I've played the n64 a whole lot more, especially cuz my ds broke, I've 100% both versions tho in emulator, I've believed the Luigi in sm64 and Waluigi in sm64ds and for the ds the weird hole in peach's castle didnt help at all If you ask me why I prefer the n64 version, well the run button on the ds ver didn't help at all in helping me enjoy the game

64 DS was the first game I ever personally owned. I remember lots of fun days spent on the various mini games. It took me a good while to realize how different DS was to the game I played for a couple hours on my cousins’ N64.
You keep bashing the controls, I'm sorry to say, the original was NOT much better. How many times did Mario just slide off the edge no matter how hard you hold back? How many times did Mario do a half-circle turn instead of a 180 snap turn? How many times have people abused the imperfect physics to break the game?
I used to play the original game in the N64 my mom gave me, when the Ds version got released I was still a kid and discovering it with all the stuff it added was mindblowing, because I played the n64 version for sooo long that having more content for that game was a dream becoming real
Played the original as a kid for years but I was obsessed with this version when I got it for Christmas 2005. The developers definitely needed a lesson in “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” for many aspects, but this game is leaps better than the original.

The movement is one of the main things that made the original so great and the main thing that makes it still just as fun to play today as it was when it released. Same can't be said about the DS version though where the movement is so awful that it makes it not fun to play, there were many great things that were added to the DS version but the movement and controls really hold it back, especially when the movement and controls were so good in the original.

I meant that you can mod it so the touchscreen analog, which is real analog, can be controlled with a joystick and used that way instead of using the thumbpad that you had to use before with the DS to simulate it.
"I have to hold a button to run" The DS had no analog stick, so deadzones weren't a thing. D-pad was digital, the button was either actuated, or it wasn't. No in-between values. So the run button was how you conveyed walk over run on digital controls. The touch controls did have more fine-tuning.
Watching one of the best Mario 64 players in the world struggle so hard on the DS version of the same game is so great

Fun fact, the Wii U version's got a mod made by the homebrew community which remaps the control stick to the pseudo-joystick touch screen controls.
There's also a mod for the game on emulator that gives it full analog support.

The DS version was one of the first DS games I’ve owned. To this day I never figured out how to break the glass for the cannon

The only failure of this game was that it didn't include Waluigi as a super-duper-secret character. That 4th door was begging to be purple, and the ideas online about how he could be attained were crazy cool, with a secret Petey Piranha fight in a secret world hidden behind the castle's outdoor stained glass pane.
I stopped playing the game once I unlocked every mini games. They were better than the game itself lmao, I was playing poker all night

I'm one of those people who started with the DS version.
I tried to play the original a few months ago and it just...it feels weird.
Like it misses a lot of modern conveniences, but also trying to do moves feel harder?
Like diving and backflips and different to pull off, and I still can't perform a backflip due to disability issues (that's more a persistent issue in every Mario game).
Still, I do think the DS version has its own merits. Shame it doesn't get as much love.
I'm also amazed how many 64 fans and speedrunners aren't aware of some of the teleports in both games.
It's faster to use glitches, but I always used the flowerbed teleport to skip ahead 😅.
I like the DS version a lot. It has so much additional content. I love the ability to transform into the different characters and play as them.

Because there was a red coin there, but also fire, metal mario is immune to fire

It’s never gonna happen, but a remake of this in HD on consoles using the Mario Odyssey engine with some tweaked physics would be the best game ever

Tbf you never had to use it, most levels where you had to go up into the air to get something, you could also get the wing cap so it was redundant

I've only played the ds version as a kid and it was so nostalgic for me then I learned some of the 1 star speedrunning tricks and it was so fun I love unlocking the new characters wish they had waluigi I used to believe it was possible to unlock him cause of all the rumors

I had the 2 versions with their console, I prefer and preferred the n64 version and I've played the n64 a whole lot more, especially cuz my ds broke, I've 100% both versions tho in emulator, I've believed the Luigi in sm64 and Waluigi in sm64ds and for the ds the weird hole in peach's castle didnt help at all
If you ask me why I prefer the n64 version, well the run button on the ds ver didn't help at all in helping me enjoy the game

64 DS was the first game I ever personally owned. I remember lots of fun days spent on the various mini games. It took me a good while to realize how different DS was to the game I played for a couple hours on my cousins’ N64.

You keep bashing the controls, I'm sorry to say, the original was NOT much better. How many times did Mario just slide off the edge no matter how hard you hold back? How many times did Mario do a half-circle turn instead of a 180 snap turn? How many times have people abused the imperfect physics to break the game?
It's possible to critique one games co trol style without necessarily saying the other doesn't have problems

I used to play the original game in the N64 my mom gave me, when the Ds version got released I was still a kid and discovering it with all the stuff it added was mindblowing, because I played the n64 version for sooo long that having more content for that game was a dream becoming real

Played the original as a kid for years but I was obsessed with this version when I got it for Christmas 2005. The developers definitely needed a lesson in “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” for many aspects, but this game is leaps better than the original.

@@toxic_revenant3 yeah if you like vastly inferior controls and movement. The movement is one of the main things that made the original so great and the main thing that makes it still just as fun to play today as it was when it released. Same can't be said about the DS version though where the movement is so awful that it makes it not fun to play, there were many great things that were added to the DS version but the movement and controls really hold it back, especially when the movement and controls were so good in the original.
@@tessaPMpro I mean, if you mod it, you can emulate the touchscreen analog with a real joystick.
@@Medachod even then, I have played it on a 3DS with the analogue and while it does control much better, the movement in the DS version is just inherently bad regardless of whether you're using a D-pad or analogue.
@@tessaPMpro Not just the literal aspect of it being a joystick well retaining digital movement. I meant that you can mod it so the touchscreen analog, which is real analog, can be controlled with a joystick and used that way instead of using the thumbpad that you had to use before with the DS to simulate it.

The DS had no analog stick, so deadzones weren't a thing.
D-pad was digital, the button was either actuated, or it wasn't. No in-between values.
So the run button was how you conveyed walk over run on digital controls.
The touch controls did have more fine-tuning.
