Let's face it. Wasn't really much of a competition, since it was a shitty year for music.
There was this beautiful moment that year where Tool, Korn, Slipknot, and Killswitch Engage all had albums debut in the top 20, and the mainstream was surprised. Rock ain't dead, but sometimes, it's good to remind the mainstream of that.
And they lost none of their potency too.

I wouldn't doubt it. It shows a lifetime of devotion to a craft. It's peak creativity, not necessarily the peak technical skill of guitarist. He's a creative genius. Music should take you to another realm, this is beyond that.

7emptest is Adam Jones' crowning achievement. I'm generally enamored with Danny Carey's performance on just about anything (as you guys seem to be)....but this song is the Adam Jones show.

As prog metal goes Adam's guitar playing is generally in the song and fairly subdued. I appreciate this normally, but sometimes it's great to see him take it out and whip it around. This song is really his showing everyone he could if he wanted to

I just love how Adam redefines what a guitar solo can be. I never tire of his ~5 minute wander in the middle of this song.
He doesn't refine it. He just finally learned how to solo properly. He had to reach out to Kirk Hammett to get advice. Adam is a rhythm player, not a lead.
@@gimphandjeff Am not a musician, could barely add anything to a 4 count on drums when I played for a few years. But, whatever it is that Adam does, it is the most spacious, creative and psychedelic music I have ever heard - by far - at least IMO.

Adam Jones is amazing and he played his ass off on this song. The way he layers in the distortion is amazing and doesn't do anything to take away from his skills as a player. I'm glad they gave him so much room to play around with on this track.
For sure, and not only on this song, but I feel like this is his best album individually, which is huge, considering he's always great.
Agreed I loved his work on the album overall especially with the way he handled Descending too.

The 2nd half as the sounds build and swell, sound like the musical equivalent of a storm. It really captures the feeling of being in the middle of an oncoming tempest. Really powerful feeling.
And classical yet modern.. almost all of the greatest classically composed pieces from mozzart, Beethoven, Brahms ECT... have a long crescendo in the final movement of the composition. The build.. release.. and then peaceful bliss. Like an orgasm.
Yeah the storm needs to be sixteen minutes for that very reason.

Building long crescendos was not common at all in classical music until the 20th century, and even then it was a rarity, and certainly not in the final movements. Most all final movements in classical music were simply fast. If there were any slow-to-fast build/transitions it was usually in the first movement. Most typically the first and last movements were fast, the second movement was slow, and the third was either a dance or (by Beethoven's time) a fun/joke movement. There are a handful of exceptions, like the final movement to Mahler's 2nd symphony (written in the late 19th century) and Beethoven's 9th symphony, but they are indeed exceptions.

In my opinion, you guys still haven’t done the best song on this album! Tool: Descending absolutely has to happen. It’s just an incredibly orchestrated song, amazing riffs, solos, and one of the best buildups I’ve ever heard. The climax when the gong hits is possibly my favorite moment in Tools history. And this is my favorite Tool song, not even just in this album. You guys gotta react to that one, I know it will blow your mind.

It is weird how many people find the record boring, there is so much there, so much detail, particularly in the drums. This is my favourite side of Tool.

I almost agree. Pneuma has become their "Free Bird" in my opinion but Descending was the second best song on the album.
This entire record is Justin Chancellor's magnum opus. Yes, Maynard, Danny, and Adam are amazing and continue to blow me away. But for me, especially in this song, Justin stands out more than ever.

Really? I always thought Lateralus was… Schism, Reflection, Disposition, The Grudge. His bass lines run those songs. I respect that you like this one from him though.

This song initially reminded me of a collage of all their albums put into one song. Also, Adam clearly got tired of not getting enough credit for being an amazing guitar player. He was once quoted about the delay for the new album saying, “it’s not good when it’s finished, it’s finished when it’s good”.
I've often thought that this track could have easily appeared on Undertow, it sounds like it's origins stem from that era
It's what this whole album sounds like. This and the the previous ones. Tool is an infinite loop of creativity.
@@shoebunkin yes, same here. Maybe it’s because I play guitar and I’ve managed to learn the majority of Adams’s riffs over the years. It’s almost as if they had pieces of unused tracks laying around and they managed to put them together seamlessly. The riff towards the end when they do another breakdown sounds a lot like The Patient. And obviously Pnuema has a ton of similarity to the breakdown in Schism.
I’ll never forget the amazement I felt when I first listened to Lateralus all the way through. This album didn’t wow me upon the first listen like that one did but has really grown on me since it’s release. Cheers

It’s crazy how well this album AND the cover art ages and grows on you. I’ll admit I wasn’t much of a fan when Fear Inoculum initially dropped, but I listen to something from this album almost every day now.
And now the cover art has basically become iconic. Anytime I see it I feel a jolt of happiness go through me lol
I relate to this so much. I personally loved it right away, but even then it's STILL such a grower. I listen to the album every day to help me sleep. Nothing like great proggy metal grooves to keep you and your dreams trippy.
@Chase Especially considering when it came out… this song predates the pandemic by only 6-7 months. I’m from New York and remember driving around in late March and early April 2020 when everything was locked down. Fear Inoculum was just so…on the nose. I would just aimlessly drive around and play this entire record start to finish. Will never forget it.

Justin often gets overlooked but this is his best work. His bass playing on this album is pure genius.
Tool took only 14 years to come up with a masterpiece of an album. 14 years is nothing when you compare that most bands wont be able to come up with something like this in their entire lifetime!
These guys are just epic. Period.
Hell, anymore it seems like a miracle for a band to last 14 years with the same lineup, let alone last 14 years at all.
Yes I didn't appreciate this album when it first came out. Two and a half years later, I have grown massively as a person after going through some hard life changes and maturing, which is what it took for me to be able to appreciate this work. it's my favorite album of theirs to date. All of their music has culminated into this. Listening to their work is like watching the life cycle of a human. Starting with their youthful, angry first albums, their spiritual and deep center, the excellence of an adult coming into his power, and now this. This phase is called mastery. Each of them displayed complete mastery on this album.
This is one of the songs you can listen to 1000 times and still hear new things each time.

It’s my favorite song on the album. Everyone always says Pneuma or 7empest. I don’t argue, those are amazing songs, there is just something special to me about Descending.

Very, VERY underrated song. I realised it's my favorite song the time I put my headphones on and just closed my eyes for 10 minutes and just listened to it. Incredible experience.
I would like to recommend “Pushit” by Tool. That’s my personal all time favorite Tool song. The lyrics are heavy and the final breakdown is one of Tool’s best moments (specifically MJK’s vocal composition).
My favorite from Fear Inoculum is by far Descending. I head that song first on Hell Fest before the record was released and it just blew my mind.

That middle section of the song that's all instrumental with the heavy groove and brilliant guitar solo, is just one of the most amazing musical experiences I can think of. Complete masterclass of guitar, bass, and drums.

I've been requesting more from the 10,000 Days album for a while now. They've only reacted to one song from that album, The Pot. Vicarious and Jambi would blow their minds and Wings for Marie 1 and 2 and Right In Two are great songs that would transition them to the other side of Tool

Right with ya. I’ve been anxious for them to react to Vicarious most of all. Many Tool purists think of that song as sounding too conventional/mainstream, but for me it’s just a perfect Tool song that kicks so much ass and has everything they do well without getting too prog/experimental. Just the lyrics alone is a trip.

7empest's appeal for me is how it sits in the overall album. The rest of the album is deep and reflective, but at the end, 7empest comes in with a flash of anger similar to early Tool songs. Not as catchy or technical as their other tracks, but feels like a good ending to the album. For the record, I do not consider Mockingbeat to be a real song. I usually skip it altogether.

I like your comment, but I have to point out that this song is maybe the most technical one in the entire album. Even Adam Jones says that in interviews. He does his best effort in making a several-minutes solo in a 21/8 time signature (which is the time signature of the majority of the song, the intro is 5+5+5+6=21 too, as well as other riffs in the song). To me, it is catchy as hell too, at least more than Fear Inoculum, Descending of Culling Voices. Anyway, that is subjective, just wanted to point out what Adam said about the song.
What I love about this song is it's a throwback to the riffs from Undertow, their first full album. Hence "here we go again." So it's a little clunky but it's amazing fan service

I always hear bits of Part of Me from Opiate in 7empest.
When you mentioned wanting to sit and listen to this song alone, I was with you. I have a decent stereo system set up out in my shop, and there are a few spots that are the best to stand and listen for the best quality. I often find myself standing, listening, somewhat in a trance with what I am hearing. There is a spot in this song, at about the 18:30 mark in this video, that always brings me out of that trance. Danny brings in the ride cymbal, very lightly. It breaks the plane, and changes the groove just enough. It is just so fucking good, but I still find that it surprises me with every listen, due to that trance like state.

What makes this song so incredible is the time signatures. It’s almost 21/16 but done as triplets, so it’s 7/4, hence the reason for the 7 in the title. Adam Jones literally was like, this album is gonna feature what I can do, the. Slapped everyone in the face with “7empest” and everyone wanted more. You guys say it may have gone on longer than it should have, but that’s the reason it’s the last song on the album. This song wasn’t meant to be a single. This song was a “jam” style song that turned into a masterpiece.
Guys, i know this song is known as Tempest but i really believe they also meant it to be Seven Empest. To "empest" means to make ill or to infect. And that definition fits the overall motif of most of the songs being germane to "contagion".

Thats how tool works. I remember listening to the lateralus album and just not getting it. Then there is one or two parts that stick in your head and you go back and listen again. 20 years later and i can still listen to that album and find something new to hear. Its so cool to listen to a band that way, as opposed to loving every song and being sick of them in 6 months

This song is the epitome of a "build up." Man, I'm still hearing stuff in this song (all they're songs) that I'm barely noticing. To put it simple, They're amazing!
I just love how Justin drops a note at 23:30, to drag you in,then again at 23:34 to capture you. I can see you’re body movements moving at the same exact time and how it can effect one’s emotions. So good. Good job guys. Tool is phenomenal. 1/22/22 LFG.
The angry growl of his bass tone on this song is just incredible. He always cuts through the mix, but *especially* on this one.
This song was a slow burn for me. When I first started listening to fear inoculum I didn’t really pay this song much attention. I was really into songs like invincible and descending. Now, this has become one of my favorites. Great job as always, guys!

Adam Jones really isn't about the highest levels in terms of technicality. He's always been all about experimenting with how the guitar sounds, how that blends into the song and gives it a certain atmosphere. That being said, he's really unmatched by any other guitarist I'm aware of in this regard.
Pretty amazing that this album after over 13 years of waiting, went to number 1 in 37 different countries. That means countries that can’t speak English, can still speak TOOL. 🤘🏽

My OH bought me tickets for their show in London for Christmas. I have always loved Tool but have never seen them live (missed out two times in the 1990’s due unfortunate chains of events). To say I am excited is an understatement🤟
I've been a huge follower /fan of TOOL for more than my second half in life at this point in time. I came across y'alls videos and thought how cool it was for y'all to experience them for the first time! i dont know if you remember me from vegas 2 years ago..!? but it was awesome meeting y'all and ill be back there in a week and hopefully will see you guys!
As a matter of fact, 7empest (and most of Tool's catalogue) was heavily influenced by the band King Crimson and their album Discipline. It would be nice you guys were to listen to the title track of the album, Discipline (I say listen because reacting to them is more difficult than other bands).
Agreed! More classic Prog Rock please guys. Maybe start them at the beginning with Crimson, then on to Yes, maybe Tarkus from ELP, and I think they would enjoy Renaissance.

Tool, King Crimson, and Gojira are my top 3 all-time bands. My favorite King Crimson is ALL OF Larks' Tongues in Aspic. If I could pick one song from it, it would be "Easy Money."

Not only is Larks' Tongues my favorite record from King Crimson (I seldom play anything released after 1975), it's probably my favorite record from all bands and genres (with "Kind of Blue" by Miles Davis second).
On the Lateralus tour, i saw KC with Tool in San Diego at SDSU (ON MY 30TH BDAY, 3rd row center, Greatest day ever!) and then in Mountain View at Shoreline 3 months later with Tricky opening.
the thing you were talking about with danny happened with rush also. i heard one of them talk about how if neil made a mistake, no one would be able to tell because he’s so good but after the show he’d say like yep i messed up these few notes. neil might’ve said that himself but i’m pretty sure i heard geddy say that.
Its so ironic that (after many listens) i personally have found that "moment" to be the mellow part near the end of the song. Suddenly the entire band gets vulnerable. If feels like the rest of the masterful metal soundtrack surrounds it like an ornate outer shell, meanwhile whilst expecting a "Grudge" like payoff it ends up being this beautiful, softer melody that moved me the most.
Hats off to Tool.
I hope Tool makes another album. I listen to them every single day. There are only 2 bands this creative, dynamic, thoughtful, and complete masters altogether with what they produce: Rush and Tool.

I would love to see a “Second Listen” video for some of the songs that you say grew on you - would be cool to hear how your impressions have developed & what stands out now. Also would love to see you do “H.” by Tool. It’s super groove oriented, straight ahead (few, if any time signature changes), and just a beautiful poem in the lyrics.
Not sure if many people have mentioned how much thought went into even the new logo for this album. If you fold the TOOL design in half it makes a hypodermic needle. Hence Fear Inoculum. And also, how eerie is it that this album came out pre-pandemic, time travelers? 👽
It's even weirder when Little Orphan Annie sang "The Sun Will Come Out Tomorrow" and it DID! Whoa, she must have psychic time travel abilities because it's impossible to predict things just by paying attention to historical patterns repeating themselves. I left a comment about Fear Inoculum coming out right before c-vid on another reaction video. Some lyrics here in 7empest, makes ya think.
The definition of an inoculum is a substance introduced into the body to create or increase the body's resistance or immunity to a disease.

Been listening to Tool since '95 and I have to agree that most songs I heard for the first time I enjoyed but didn't fully "get it". With time I realized that with each listen I loved those songs more and more...maybe because my soul wasn't ready to truly hear/feel them yet. You guys are great...thanks.

Fear Inoculum took several listens as an album to fully “bake in” for me. As a long term Tool fan, I want everything to be Undertow, Opiate, and Aenima at first. Things change, and that’s life but it’s easier to accept when there’s a nugget of the familiar thrown in. 7empest is Tool at their roots. This song was the tip
of the spear for me. After taking this in, the rest of the album followed right in. You guys get it…Tool is always on point!
I love the channel and your content and you seem like super cool dudes as well. Keep doing what you do! This is one of the craziest TOOL songs. Adam Jones rips on this one as does the rest of the band. There is so much going on with their music that sometimes it takes many listens before you start realizing what they are doing and how truly amazing it is.
I was going to go see them in January here in California but was in a deep depression from my momma passing away. I hope they will come out this way again so I can live my dream of seeing them. I absolutely love your Tool reaction videos! Xo
I think the reason that Tool songs don't always "grab" you right off, is that they're so complicated and unique. You tend to look for a "groove" or catchy beat, and you won't find that until you listen a few times and figure out their intelligent pattern. After that, your mind is blown!
I was one of those people that suggested this song first although even as a rabid tool fan, I took an odd approach to listening to this album in that I listened to it as reaction channels we’re listening so when they/you were reacting, so was I. When you guys did pneuma I hadn’t heard it yet myself. I don’t know how I held out from listening to much of this album as I did but it was fun as hell to enjoy with people like you guys for the first time together. I mean I started watching reaction channels because I love seeing first reactions to music I’ve known for some time. One song from this album that I’ve seen no one listen to… it’s all 100% Danny! Chocolate Chip Trip! Danny is a freaking monster!
Such a great shout to Adam, and how you described the sounds it really covers what his guitar playing is about. There’s a certain magic in his ability to innovate and show something new - usually its more subtle but this song really gave him space.
I sincerely appreciate you both... truly enjoy your commentary and insight on some of my favorite bands, Rush Tool, etc.
When I first heard 7empest, I spent most of the track trying to figure out which past album each riff sounded like it belonged to. I still get a lot of Undertow and 10,000 Days vibes from this. Also, can confirm it sounds f***ing epic to listen to during a storm.
I've often thought that this track could have easily appeared on Undertow, it sounds like it's origins stem from that era

For what it is worth, this song won the Grammy for Best Metal Performance. The Grammy committee have little clue about the breath and depth of metal music in general, but in recent years they have at least been nominating actual metal bands for the metal category. And when one considers how pop oriented the charts are in general, having a 15-16 minute metal song win a Grammy, and an 85-minute album be no.1, one can’t really deny Tool’s crossover influence.
This isn't their best song, but technically one of the best they've ever done. To me, Pneuma, Invincible and Descending are a notch above tonally and just hit me in the sweet spot as Eulogy, Lateralus or Schism did.
Thats interesting... i think 7empest is the best of the album. Its a journey through their catalogue and everybody is at its best. Its absolutely fantastic, but i like pneuma and the others too :)
@@bernasouza8734 Yes, it does seem like a rundown of their entire oeuvre, having the moody angst of Ænima as well as Lateralus' progressive meanderings. However, on its own I feel it does not hit the point as much as the three i mentioned above. Not taking anything away from its technical brilliance, Adam and Dany are just immense throughout. But ever since Lateralus, Tool has grown in its writing, and it is as cerebral, as it is visceral and has added a spiritual note to their overall sound. Somehow 7empest falls a little short in its spirituality, and it is where Pneuma precisely wins me over. Even Invincible's heartwarming vocals has that. 7empest tries being political, and I feel Tool has moved on from that side of things and it shows. It seems contrived and less organic than a Eulogy or Hooker with a Penis. Maynard wants to be angry, but I somehow don't feel it as much.
Anyways it is alright, we all have our choices and any Tool is better than much of the music out there. Just lucky to having been able to appreciate such an immense band, in the cacophony of shit that's pop music these days.
There's elements of Schism in this song and a little bit of Flood as well. The middle is amazing but alot of this album has bits of other songs in it but it's technically amazing. It's the only Tool album I don't go back and listen to though.
@@HiddenHandMedia It's a good album but I think the songs were a little bit long. I have no problems with long songs but they did it better in Lateralus because you could listen to Parabol seperate to Parabola etc. So I feel like I can't just put on a song with my friends because they are all 10+ mins.
@@thewildhealer541 yep, i agree with that. I think fear inoculum and pneuma are fairly great songs, then invincible e descending are too long man. If both were like, 6 to 7 minutes, would be better. I like culling voices and that drum solo, but for me, 7empest is the best song.
Guys - been following you for years...love your energy, positive attitude, and open-minded fair review of all music and all genres! Your willingness and openness to like metal, prog rock, classic rock and more is super impressive. Makes me be open minded too! As a headbanger though, please keep picking bands like this!! I would love for you guys to try out a few other metal gems...Korn, Slipknot , and even an obscure industrial metal band from the 90's called Prong. Unbelievable riffs for jamming or working out to. Regardless, love, love, love you guys...keep it coming boys!

Great video guys! Big fan of this channel, I love you guys do everything from TOOL to Metallica to Ghost! I'm a huge TOOL fan, I remember the night FI dropped and I heard this song on headphones and I'm like this is what music really is! So this one if my favorite songs on the album! I've seen them live in 2020 and greatest concert I ever been out of 95 concerts I been too! Next Thursday in Idaho I'm going to see TOOL live again and I can't not wait! This my favorite band! So rock on brothers and hope to see more TOOL reactions video in 2022! BTW Danny, Justin, Manyard and Adam in my opinion the greatest musician on this planet!🤘🤘🤘
Another another thing, I grew up pretty hood and I never saw black dudes rocking out to rock music lol. Not one of my boys was into it. I wasn't either at the time. All we listened to was rap and hip hop. So for these guys to move their bodies back and forth and vibe as hard as they are to this song, it made me appreciate it even more. It actually gave me the chills. I was feeling what they were feeling even though I've heard this song many times. Very cool moment.
There really is no greater joy than watching you two discover, emote and discuss so intelligently what you’re experiencing… but NOTHING beats your reaction/reviews of Tool.

First off, I just wanted to say I love your channel, you guys are amazing! I feel like I’m sitting around enjoying and talking about music with a couple of close friends, love your passion, humor and authenticity. I had the exact same reactions as both of you the first, oh, ten times I listened to this song. But then like maybe the fifteenth listen I started really hearing how the elements fit together, like it’s some kind of orchestral piece or something. I was looking for that hook or piece that really grabbed me like the middle section of 46 & 2. But after repeated listens I now feel the whole frickin is the hook, like a great movie that sneaks up on you and it’s only when it’s over you realize how affecting and profound it really was. Just my perspective at this point, but isn’t that how most Tool tracks are? I don’t think I’ve really liked, and eventually loved, a Tool song since Sober until after literally like 20 listens. Keep up the awesome content!
