Classical Composer Reacts to Part of Me and 7empest (Tool) | The Daily Doug (Episode 211)

In this episode of #TheDailyDoug, I'm reacting to two Tool songs suggested by guest DJ, DJ-Dan. This is the first time hearing both of these songs for me...and I'm still marveling at their sound in these songs, which were released 27 years apart. Their grounded and relenting riffs, rhythmic complexity, vocals, bass, drums, and a world-shattering guitar solo really thrilled me. Enjoy!

I agree Doug. I have always felt that Tool rhythmically are primal and the lyrics and guitar are cerebral. Thus creating the dichotomy of the mind and soul/body with their music.

@@DavidOakesMusic I would rather listen to a nicely phrased melodic guitar solo that’s rhythmically satisfying over tweedle-tweedle-tweedle-tweeeee! "I am prayerful that can start to come together as a society of humans on this little pale blue dot..." And this is why the next time you listen to Tool, it should be the song "Descending", also from the album Fear Inoculum. It's a rallying cry for the survival of mankind. It's a relatively positive message, particularly for Tool, and it's also my favorite song on the album for that very reason.

Interesting, you were wondering initially if 7empest had anything to do with Shakespeare's The Tempest, if you are curious to listen to a metal adaptation the band Angra made a whole pretty cool album that is entirely based on "The Tempest", named "Aqua". As a guitarist it’s always good to see Adam get some love. His playing is seemingly simple at times, but his ability to create texture with so many cool sounds and sometimes being another percussion sound is just bad ass. Just a perfect example of not needing to play a million notes to be a great guitarist

A lot of the rhythms in this song seem to add up to 21, I noticed it when trying to learn the song.
    The meter at the beginning is 5 + 5 + 5 + 6 = 21
    The break (?) at 12:16 is 4/4 and 13/8, if switched into eighth notes is 8 + 13 = 21
    The part at 13:43 is 11/8 + 10/8, 11 + 10 = 21
    The section starting at 14:50 is three bars of 7/8, 7 + 7 + 7 = 21
I'm sure there are other examples, too, but the main thing is that they all are technically capable of syncing up with one another. We hear several times throughout the song examples of previous sections being played over each other, and they sync perfectly. I don't know what this may mean within the context of the meaning of the song, but it's something to think about.

Doug, you nailed what “part of me” is. More succinctly, it is his shadow, or lower self, often the most of it subconscious. You start making it conscious, it often times comes out with this sort of egoic anger, to try to rebirth itself by tricking you, your ego, to call itself out. But whatever calls out the lower self is egoic, and by its nature another form of the activity that feeds the shadow, inevitably. And it’s the same on 7empest, although 20some years on. A tempest must be just that. Acceptance. It leads us to the door, but cannot go through with us. Cheers for tackling those two pieces together. Not many would, or have. 🙏❤️

That main riff in the beginning of 7empast changes time signatures - it is actually 6/8 to 5/8 repeating. I would write out all the time signature changes on this track, but that would take a ridiculous amount of time.. there are so many changes.

7mpest is one of my favorite Tool songs, both musically and metaphorically. I personally think its meaning can apply to any demagogue who shamelessly manipulates and divides constituents to a point where a destructive "storm" wreaks havoc on everyone. Seeing as how this was released in 2019, it's pretty clear who they're talking about, especially when considering the events that would lead to January 2021. Tool, like many of us, saw a storm brewing back then and this song served as one of the best prophetic warnings of the time. Amazing stuff, & great episode as always Doug!

Adam Jones guitar reminds me of Mick Box of Uriah Heep. Lots of memorable idiosyncratic notches in the playing in amongst a smooth, slippery overall tone.

Hi Doug. It's been a week since I discovered your videos and I love what your doing. It's fun seeing to songs from your point of you. Would be nice if you could check Morphine Child from Savatage.

Thanks Doug. My grandfather was the chair of brass dept at a college and I desperately wanted to share lateralus with him but he said, music will mean less if you force analytics.. n refused to listen... thanks for giving me what I wished to happen that day.

My understanding is that some of the songs on this album were effectively finished 8 years before August 2019, so trying to find out a contemporary meaning in 7empest may be challenging.

This is Adam’s Magnum Opus. I get chills every time Adam starts his solo. Every. Single. Time.
Edited- I make the same faces when I listen to Adam.

Of all the reactions I've seen to 7empest I have yet to hear anyone point out the awesome mixing in the last big guitar solo where at just past 10:50 (on the record, not this video) the guitar gets panned to dead center, when they break back out to stereo about a minute later it's just chilling. You'll only really pick it out on a good stereo or set of headphones.

One thing I'd find interesting, due your classic background, and as someone who likes to listen to classic music too, would be if you brought a crossover, like, which classical composer would be most likely to write a piece like the one you are listening to

If you like how the guitars play similar melodies but come apart and come back together based on different times you should check out 80’s King Crimson: Frame By Frame, Discipline, Neal and Jack and Me, Waiting Man

Yes, I would pick one song from each album. Ataraxia, Interior People and Supreme Ascendancy would be my picks, but there are so many great choices. I need to see some experts do King Gizzard

Scenes from Apocalypse Now, is what I see with this track. The trick to Danny's double kick is the non continuous patterns, rather than beating you over the head with it, as with so many prog/metal drummers.
