Coloring Wood With Shou Sugi Ban and Wood Dye

  • I pull out my once trusted blow torch to try and do a wood coloring video using a Japanese wood burning technique called Shou Sugi Ban, and then color the wood with a wood dye from Keda Dye.
I hope it helps give some ideas and demonstrates fairly well a new wood finishing technique. Thank you again for watching my videos, and for all your support, and generous likes and comments.
Wood Dye Used was Keda Royal Blue Liquid Dye
The blue dye was mixed into acetone at a ratio of 1 tsp blue dye to 12 ounces of acetone. I let the dye stain rest overnight, due to time constraints. The Douglass Fir wood 2x4 was sanded with 150 grit sandpaper, just like the chipboard and pine was when they were stained.
I really hope this helps someone out, and that it was a good demonstration that will help someone accomplish a Shou Sugi Ban wood burning finish, and possibly a Shou Sugi Ban with wood color finish.

This is _EXACTLY_ what we have decided to do with the trim work for the kitchen when we repair and remodel it! This midnight blue looking color is absofreakinglutely perfect for what we're wanting to do - it will go _perfectly_ with the backsplash tile we are going to be using! Love it, thanks for doing these!

For true shou sugi ban you should burn deeper. Then take a wire brush and brush with the grain and brush away a bunch of the charred stuff. You’ll be left with the raised grain patterns being dark with the lower areas being slightly burned but lighter.
    Looks nice!

Thank you so much for that! I actually have gone out and I got a "Whip wheel" is what I call it lol, but it has these rigid like nylon "whips" and works just like a brush on my drill. Man! It leaves such an incredible texture, well at least on the small piece I did, and I totally see what you mean by the higher and lower ridges. Worked great! I made another shift knob, using Pine, and Sugi with how you mentioned, but shhhh I can't say anything til after Christmas 😂 Thank you so much for the added info. Owe you one my friend 👍 Thank you so much for watching. Really appreciate it!

Keda Wood Dye no sweat. This is how we grow as woodworkers and as a community by sharing our knowledge and techniques.
I found a small steel wire bristle brush worked the best.
I put the piece I’m brushing on a hard surface and hold it with my left hand. Then I brush the surface with the brush following the grain pattern. I stop frequently and vacuum up the dust it produces and I’d advise wearing a dust mask that seals well.
After the initial brushing ( I find) it’s sort of a feeling thing as to how much more and how aggressively you should brush.
At one point I’m brushing using very light pressure almost just letting gravity pull the brush down onto the wood.
Then take your hand and feel the surface.
It’ll be like the grain of the wood has been magically considerably raised up above the rest of the wood.
Once I feel the grain has been raised enough I then apply the dye/stain to the wood.
I have a US flag I’m doing using your blue dye for the union and it came out a sort of sea greenish blue.
It’s going to be put up for sale at a shop out here in Bridgehampton.

Be Forewarned... it can become an obsession of sorts. I just emptied out my pocket change jar to replenish my supply of propane and map gas so I can go out to the garage and feed my addiction. Today Ill be burning and dying (using KedaDye (powder wood dyes) the frame to our glass top office table. If you haven't played with the water soluble wood dyes I encourage you to give it a goo... they are a lot of fun to mix up and play around with. I always feel like a bit of a scientist when I get to mix up a new batch. Despite what the labels say, I haven't had any issues saving/reusing my mixed dye solutions. Just add a tbs. of standard isopropyl alcohol and store the left over mixed solutions in a sealed glass jar. Old pasta sauce and pickle jars work great and are a thrifty alternative to canning jars.

Do you think you could do an olive green? I see a few people doing some nice emeralds, but never do I see a deep glossy olive green.

Did you burn the “chip board” (OSB), as well ?

This sounds weird but i could not get the ratio of keda powder to water/alcohol. And discovered this by accident but you can do it in reverse and it came out awsome. I dyed the wood then after it dried i burned the grain and it came out awsome!!
