I graduated high school in 1995. The military recruiters were relentless with me. Relentless with my mother. Everyone wanted me to go to an academy. I had no interest. I finally started answering the phone and asking, "Does Don't Ask Don't Tell apply to your program?" As soon as I asked, they never called again.

Army recruiter called & asked to speak to my daughter. I said "You don't want her, she's gay." They hung up. (Mid 2000s)

hahahahah great response, James! Unfortunately, I didn't even have that choice (if I would have, how things may have been different!) as DNDT didn't exist - Bush Sr, was still the president and the very thought of being gay in the military and violating the UCMJ would get you in Leavenworth for a number of years.
Lucky you for such a great, thoughtful response!

@@atlbrysco6198 He never cared about your homosexuality. He and Reagan watched as people died of AIDS. They only acted in 1985 when many died and rolled out the drugs in 1986 but when Bush Sr became president, he cut HIV/AIDS research costs. Thanks to Truvada, the rate of HIV/AIDS transmission has gone down.

@@rickardkaufman3988 Rikard - let me first say I apologize it took me so long to respond; I wasn't even aware you had made a comment on this thread until tonight. You are correct that Reagan and Bush Sr (as well as Clinton to a degree) and Bush Jr did nothing for us. Further, the statement you made about Truvada is correct. However, the rates of HIV/AIDS were going down long before Truvada thanks to the amazing work that the community was doing in promoting safe sex and giving out condoms, etc. By the way - Truvada is great - but the true "drug therapy" that helped make the number infected going down was the "cocktail" (known as HAART) - a mixture of drugs that lowered the viral load that was killing people. Truvada is the next generation of the cocktail.
Regardless, we are making progress killing the virus. With the help of Truvada (even as PreP) we are making great strides against the virus - hopefully it continues!
      Thanks for your comment!

Young people, gay, black, or white should get a better understanding of the sacrifices that people have made so they can have the freedoms, they take for granted in today's world. Whether it's for gay rights, or for the right to cast your vote. Is that the American way ? I know, I know, the young think it has always been this way... History shows it hasn't....

American history is full of these forgotten truths. In America it's ok to be different in many ways, though the religious right doesn't try to understand. Many of the people covered in the story would give up their lives for America, and many did. Their struggle is no different than the one's Black, Hispanic, Jewish, Muslim, Women and Native Americans still deal with today. They seek respect, dignity, and protection under the law. They are not criminals, they are human beings.

Here's another "lavender scare': In the early 60's when I was less than 10 years old my family was stationed in Paris, France. I used to steal Cokes from the refrigerator (we lived on the economy (non-military residency)). . .sugar rush, baby bottle, exhilaration from being held was the thrill. I would lie (prevaricate) about my thefts. The parents would make me watch while my siblings were punished for what I did. We were transferred to Arizona. I was led (by a friend) to where a Coke machine was in a field at a metal building across the street from a water tower . . . in the desert. We could reach up into this 'vending' machine and pull Coke bottles out. 30 miles away was an open-pit copper mine . . . Lavender Pit . . . la-vendor pit? They were making me into a thief so that they could punish me for stealing. They're still doing it to this day. The lavender scare. Thousands and thousands of times. I think they use me as a fulcrum to determine the day's festivities.

We had just come through 16 years of a very left wing Democrat government that had many "reds" (as they used to call them) in high places in the government. The fact that homosexual leftists were caught up in this had less to do with their sexual persuasion than the fact they were "fellow travelers" of the USSR. And in those days, homosexuals could be blackmailed by Soviets to perform spying tasks to support the Russians.

Take a hint from the fact that you still have to whine about that one cake. How long ago was that, a decade? fifteen years?

I’m don’t have hate or bias against the gay but I don’t like how they parade around or I cannot accept the hate ,bias and rebellious way nor do I accept their bias hate and disrespect for out President and God. Years ago for years they had methods by doctors which I don’t think it was Humana now they do have rights my friends that are gay they live and are very respectful their are so so respectful , now we have the transgender they have this bill out the equality act now there is several issue that are not good for woman young girls or parents several parents are fightning in America that the doctors took right over and parents have no longer rights over their children as young as 7 years old if the doctor ask the child are you ok with your gender and the child says no the doctor takes over your child look it up you will understand what that act is all about. We need to be careful that the children are not use for guinea pigs. ✊🇺🇸😎
