- The little museum of purgatory lies in the heart of Rome. It's full of ghostly artefacts, reported to be messages from beyond the grave: from dark handprints seared onto wood, to phantom markings etched in prayer books. It has to be one of the most disturbing museums around, but why does exist, what’s it for? And how do we know that any of these objects are indeed genuine? Let's investigate these ghoulish exhibits in this episode of Strange Christian Art.
We'll also explore the concept of purgatory, for those who are unfamiliar. Another writer who wrote a lot about Purgatory was the medieval poet Dante Alighieri. In his sequel to Inferno, he envisioned Purgatory as a giant mountain made up of layers of terraces. Each represents one of the Seven Deadly Sins. In later centuries, Purgatory fell out of favour, especially in branches of Christianity like Protestantism. For Catholics however, it still remains a core belief.

I'd say he beats the History Channel with what little budget he has, and that's really saying something. He doesn't just extrapolate on stuff we learned (or thought we learned) in high school; he introduces so many new and intriguing topics and historical tidbits that, honestly, I had never even thought would pique my interest.
Truly, a gem of a channel, carving out diamonds in the rough.

The "history channel" has shamed itself for decades now. They have no commitment to doing serious historical documentaries. "Ancient Aliens"? Any channel that would put any money behind a program like that deserves zero respect.
Just ask any real historian. The view is universal amongst scholars

Major correction, for Catholics, purgatory is not an "in between" (that's "limbo" which is not a dogma but a theological hypothesis). Purgatory is a state/place where souls are ALREADY SAVED but just needed cleansing.
Side note, Dante's depiction of hell, purgatory and heaven must always be seen as an artistic interpretation, neither dogma nor theology.

So, right, based in the world we live in, Dante's depiction of hell is fueled by things that we, as humans can perceive.
For me as a Catholic purgatory isn't in belowground or in the skies, spirits may be in a limbo in this very world, just as you said, it is a theological hypothesis. In the case of purgatory, is more like a higher dimension for souls to go rest in peace. Sorry if I may be incorrect, the only thing we can do is love our christians, muslims, atheistics, brothers and sisters, let's not forget everyone with different faiths and views of the spiritual world. That’s interesting, I looked it up and see what you’re saying. I think in colloquial language among non Catholics people use the word purgatory to mean limbo but it’s not altogether accurate
The difference between Dante's depiction and that followed by catholics is pretty much the roles in the church the ones who created the latter had. As mentioned nome of this concept is based on sacred texts.

Hey, i would like to suggest a video subject, “the library of the Moscow tsars” or the “golden library”, a lost library speculated to have contained rare Greek, Latin, Chinese and Byzantine books. This library was a subject of interest in the 19th century with people such as Peter the great searching for it. Many archeologists have tried to find it over the centuries. It is quite an interesting story which would fit your channel quite well. Please do consider this suggestion as a possible video subject, if you would be so kind.

Oh, I've been to this church! A professor in school told me about it years ago. Otherwise I would have never known it existed. It's almost like a hidden museum. I purchased a cd with a digital book about the museum and the priest told me about the story of the church and the fire. He also showed me a piece of wood hidden behind a structure next to the altar. The burn marks on the wood looked like the virgin Mary in prayer. I don't know if it was the face you mentioned or something else, but it's still there.
It's amazing that a church would so enthusiastically collect obvious frauds. Fascinating

My guess is that the face within the fire was just embers that were weathered away over time. I forgot what it was called but humans have this ability to see faces or expressions in inanimate obects (take cars, for example.) And that was probably what the priest saw that night when his place of worship burned down.
Though I can't prove or deny the existance of purgatory, it makes a bit of sense to me why it prevails in Catholicism. The idea of leaving the world with unfinished business or woes that were never fully recognized doesn't sound very especially when its a time you can never go back to it. Of course, this is an interpretation of mine so feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
It's called pareidolia. I thought I lost it years ago that when I started seeing resemblances again, it actually scared me.
You can make the book burn spots with a hot/burning wine cork. That's how my dad made pirate maps in old books or a piece of paper. (I'm not saying the burnings are fake or real)

The finger holes in the book look like candle burns. I don't know enough about ancient paper to know how likely it is to burn but I imagine that the water content was higher and less likely to burn out of control.
I was thinking more like someone wiped potash or lye off their fingers. Chemical burns on paper

They can visit earth if God allows it, and every time to ask for prayers, they also can spend their purgatory on earth in a specific place or church for the sins committed.

That museum looks amazing. I'm quite fascinated with the idea of purgatory, I wasn't raised in any particular faith but I like the idea that there's a way forward in the afterlife, not just a binary of reward or punishment.

8:48 Perhaps, something caused parts of the pages to rot, or something that was hot enough to put a hole through the pages, but not quite hot enough to burn the entire book, could have been applied to it. Although it is hard to explain, I find it highly irrational to presuppose the existence of Purgatory and ghosts in order to jump to the conclusion that these artefacts prove those two things, as that is called bending the evidence in the direction you want it to go, rather than following it where it leads. Anyways, yet another gem from Hochelega.
Just an idea but you could do a video on physical remains of saints because its a really interesting topic and i would really like to see a vid on things like that skull you showed in the video or the holy right ( szent jobb in hungarian )

I mean, there are plenty of ideas generally accepted as true by Christians despite not actually appearing in the Bible. I don’t see purgatory that differently from Satan in that regard.
Satan is most definitely mentioned in the bible in different forms. The serpent, the anti-christ, the fallen angel, the evil that tried to tempt Jesus and more.
@@dpt4458 This is a hilarious response because the Bible never says the serpent in the garden is Satan, and the Bible never says anything about a fallen angel. People assume/interpret the serpent is Satan, something scripture doesn’t say.
Scripture speaks highly of praying for the dead, something that wouldn’t make sense if all souls went directly to heaven or hell, so Catholics interpret these as implying a state like purgatory where souls are purified and benefit from prayer. It’s all interpretation.
@@ModernEphemera Ezekiel 28-14-10 and Luke 10:18; I will give it to you that the serpent is not directly made out to be Satan but still its pretty clear who that is meant to be when you take in context everything else.
@@ModernEphemera Yes, and another interpretation could be made to say that souls may have went into heaven uneasy especially those who died violent deaths and or had lingering affections for those of the earth and could not go to heaven directly and thus the prayers are meant to ease their souls into paradise. That and/or people have a hard time accepting the deaths of people close to them and so priests told them to pray for their souls as a means of calming people and getting them through their grief. Before you say that this means you cannot differentiate divine inspiration and things people put in there with other reasons, I agree.
@@dpt4458 There’s some decent evidence in scripture for modern ideas of Satan, but it’s mostly interpretation. It’s just pet peeve of mine that Protestants claim Catholics are making up un-biblical stuff when Protestants claim all sorts of fringe interpretative stuff all the time without ever calling each other out
