There is so much more to this film than I thought! It succeeds in some genuine frights as well as keeping the mind engaged in not only the case, but horror film tropes as well. I had a great time watching this first one. I hope you enjoyed my Scream (1996) movie reaction & commentary

Original Movie: Scream (1996)
In this video, we're reacting to the 1996 movie, Scream. From the acting to the directing, this movie was chalk full of horror and excitement. Check it out and let us know what you think!
Welcome to Scream Week! Everyday this week I'll post a reaction to an installment to the Scream Franchise leading up to my first time watching Scream 6. For the most part I remembered nothing about the movies, so this was definitely a fun ride! What are your thoughts on the first movie?
I liked it, it was fun seeing Wes Craven poke fun at the very horror tropes he helped create. Love some of the easter eggs they included. The one you missed, the reporter asking "how does it feel to almost be brutally butchered?" Is Linda Blair, the child actress from The Exorcist.
@@jenniferyorgan4215 I loved slamming the nightmare on elm street sequels 🤣
An all time favorite and still top of the series for me. Drew is an amazing opening kill and her death is one of the most gruesome in the series (disemboweled and hung with her own intestines 😵).
The cast is fantastic and no matter how many times I've seen it (or Scary Movie) I still enjoy it.
Hard to understate how refreshing this movie was after years of no good, fun slasher movies. It was like a defibrillator for the genre
@@jenniferyorgan4215 I love how that's a callback to Billy telling Sydney that watching The Exorcist made him think of her. 🤣 Maybe Billy was psychic and knew Linda would be there! 😆
Skeet Ulrich gets praise for his role as Billy (rightfully so), but not enough people talk about Matthew Lillard and how brilliant he was.
I think Matthew Lillard is a really underrated actor in general. He breaks my heart every time I watch SLC Punk.
Genuinely psychotic.
@@ScientificallyStupid SLC Punk is an incredible little film, and easily Lillard's best performance. More people need to seek it out.
@@LordVolkov thank you for saying so! I got a notification on my phone and only saw the beginning of your comment and was mentally preparing my rebuttal. 😆😆😆 SLC Punk is definitely a movie more people should see; it's not only something you'd particularly relate to if you spent your formative years as a punk (does "growing up" make you a poser? I don't think it does- now that I'm the old lady who just wears "normal" black clothes to shows instead of planning my outfit like I would when I was 20- the punk was inside me all along) but I think it's probably relatable for most people as a coming of age story and trying to reconcile being young and idealistic with old and practical.
@@ScientificallyStupid SLC Punk was my anti-fascist awakening as a teen 🤘
"My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me!"
"You hit me with the phone dick!"
I love Mathew Lillard in this movie.
"Peer pressure. I'm far too sensitive." is my favorite line in the film.
When Billy is explaining to Sydney about her mother sleeping with his father.
The look on Stu's face, leads me to believe he didn't know about the actual reason for doing it besides fun.
I like that idea!
I think so too! I did notice that
Na He knew. It was just, finally seeing his best friend billy finally getting to telling her what this killing spree meant to him. Plus there was 3 killer. In part 1.
@flaysol7719, his facial expression proves he didn't know. The fact that he didn't have a motive other than "peer pressure" also proves he didn't have a motive. Stu genuinely thought they did the murder for shits and giggles.
Here's a few horror Easter eggs in this movie:
You caught the Freddy Krueger reference, but the guy playing the janitor is actually Wes Craven!
The reporter who asks Sidney what it feels like to be nearly butchered is Linda Blair, who plays Regan in The Exorcist (which you should totally watch this Halloween season!)
When Tatum encounters Ghostface, she asks "What movie is this from, I Spit on Your Garage?" That's a reference to an old exploitation movie called "I Spit on Your Grave".
Billy's last name is Loomis, which is the last name of both the Doctor from Halloween and the boyfriend in Psycho.
Speaking of Psycho, Drew Barrymore was originally supposed to play Sidney, but changed her mind and wanted to play Casey instead...and since she was the most famous one at the time, they ended up paying homage to Psycho with the "star" getting killed off at the beginning of the film!
Loomis is also the last name of Barnabas Collin’s ‘Renfield’ in Dark Shadows.
Something that you missed that was a very meta moment in the film was the reporter that asks Sydney all the horrible questions right when they get to school after being at the police station the night before is actually played by Linda Blair, who was the young girl in The Exorcist
I just found out that Matthew Lillard improvised both: "Oww ... you hit me with the fucking phone. DICK!!" , and "My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me." Brilliant channeling of his own HS self.
"My mom and dad are gonna be so mad at me" is one of the best lines in the film, mostly because if the hilarious way he delivered it!
"You sick fucks. You've seen one too many movies!"
"Now Sid, don't you blame the movies. Movies don't create psychos. Movies make psychos more creative!"
Fun Fact: The use of Caller ID increased more than threefold after the release of this film.
What Script Fact: Matthew Lillard ad-libbed the "My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me." line. Director Wes Craven thought it was so funny that he kept it in the film.
Scene 118 Fact: The party scene near the end of the film runs forty-two minutes long. It was shot over the course of twenty-one days from the time the sun set to the time it rose. After it wrapped, the cast/crew jokingly called it "The longest night in horror history." and had "I SURVIVED SCENE 118" (which was the name of the scene during shooting) t-shirts made.
Bait And Switch Fact: Drew Barrymore was originally cast as Sidney Prescott (eventually played by Neve Campbell). But Drew insisted that if she played Casey, a victim in just the opening scene alone, then it would make the audience think anything could happen. Barrymore being given top billing and appearing on the poster was meant to mislead the audience. Thus one of the most hated horror tropes was created.
Also, Ulrich wasn't actually supposed to hit Lillard with the phone, so that's genuine outrage.
"My mom and dad are going to be so mad at me." That line & the bit with the phone makes me laugh every single time I see it.
I think the trope about killing off the famous actor first actually goes back to Alien, at least. Every single actor in it was well known except for Sigourney Weaver.
@@o0Wardreamer0oJanet Leigh in Psycho
I love that whole scene when Randy (Jamie Kennedy) was watching Halloween by himself and telling Jamie Lee Curtis to turn around that he's behind you lol. Wes wanted to be creative with playing with their really names. He was telling himself that he Jamie needed to turn around lol. The way Wes Craven creates those little things is amazing and brilliant!
- Also, I don't know if you caught on to it but the whole last 30ish mins everything that was happening around the house it was perfectly mirroring with what was happening in Halloween lol. The bedroom scene with Sid/Billy, the background music and noices from Halloween when Dewey was in the house searching, Randy on the couch by himself and Sidney yelled out at the same time as Laurie screamed in Halloween which ended up saving Randys life lol, Laurie hiding in a closet as Michael was stabbing through and Sidney also in a closet and stabbed Billy.
Skeet Ulrich kills it as Billy pun intended this is a masterpiece
Still one of the best opening scenes to any horror movie ❤ chef's kiss.
💯
I love the meta-element of the films about the movies within the movies, and that they set it up here before Stab is even introduced.
'Who would they cast to play you? Probably Tori Spelling...' is easily one of the best jokes in Scream once it pays off in 2.
Major kudos to Tori Spelling for being willing to play along with a joke that's basically just "Boy, Tori Spelling sucks, huh?".
@@Rmlohner Her performance in Scary Movie 2 makes me think she has a pretty good sense of humor about herself.
@@Rmlohner Neve Campbell wanted to do "Miss Piggy" instead because she didn't want to insult another actress. They got her to do one take with it as Tori Spelling and used that one. At least Spelling got an acting job out of it.
All of these reactors make me ask the same question, over and over: How have you NOT seen this???
LOL. So ready to watch you react to this. Classic!!!
Linda Blair from the Exorcist was the reporter that asked How does it feel to be almost brutally butchered?
@Casual Nerd Reactions Pro tip: the "we all go a little mad sometimes" line isn't the only Psycho reference in this movie. But it might be the best
The janitor that was dressed up like Freddy Krueger was none other than Wes craven himself ❤️
Fun Facts:
- So when Tatum said to Dewey that the janitor is your superior, it's true cause the janitor at the school that was dressed as Freddy Krueger was Wes Craven.
- So before Scream came out, the caller ID was not popular at all. The caller I.D. sales in the U.S. tripled after Scream was released, lol.
- Billy AND Stu were at Casey's and used their girlfriends as Alibis for being out. Stu was on the patio with Steve while Billy was in the front, tormenting her on the phone. The question about "Which door am I at" was a trick question. Stu ran to the front door to let Billy in. You could hear the front door open before she went outside through the kitchen. Also, when her parents got home the front door was open. When her mom was hearing Casey breathing on the other end of the phone line, you can hear one talking to another saying "tree," and the phone ends. Also, when Steve was tied up, he was looking at both directions of the house.
- Wes Craven lol to get his actors into character emotionally like Drew Barrymore (Casey) and Neve Campbell (Sidney) right before he start to film he would run up to them and tell them something terrifying. With Drew Wes Craven would tell her real-life stories of animal cruelty to bring out her emotions and then run off set and yell action, lol.
- Roger L. Jackson was the voice of Ghostface for all of Scream movies. For every film, the actors were never allowed to meet him before or see him during filming, so that way, when they were on the phone with him, it would give them that real fear effect. Wes Craven always kept him hidden from the others to where they couldn't see him, but he was still able to see them. He also improved a lot of his lines as well.
- Neve Campbell was originally going to say "no" to the film as she is especially afraid of horror movies. But when hearing her co-star Skeet Ulrich (Billy) from The Craft (1996) was going to appear, she agreed. They did both movies back to back that same year.
- They casted Skeet Ulrich as Billy Loomis and gave him the same kind of hair style cause of how close he looked like to young Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street who also climbed in through a bedroom window. His last name, Loomis, is a reference to Dr. Loomis in Halloween.
- Also when he climbed through her window, the first time "Fear the Reaper" was playing. He climbed through her window to distract her and turned on her stereo to cover up the background noise of Stu kidnapping her dad. If notice he was wearing the same outfit at the end.
- The news lady that was harassing Sidney "how does it feel to almost being butchered" is Linda Blair from the Exorcist.
- If look really closely when Billy was "stabbed" in the bedroom, you can see Stu adding the fake blood onto the knife before wiping it off.
-Casey's comment about Nightmare on Elm Street about how the first was good, but the rest sucked. It's because Wes Craven only did the first one and didn't direct all of the other ones, lol.
-Kenny actually saved Sidney in his literal final moment AFTER his throat got slashed. He pointed to the back and told her "door" so she could crawl out.
- Ghostface in the bathroom was a prank on Sidney it wasn't either Billy or Stu.
- Rose McGowan(Tatum) was actually able to fit through the cat door. They had to staple her shirt to the door cause she kept falling out. Also, just before her head got smashed in, she herself added, calling out "mom," and Wes loved it and kept it in cause it gave her last moments of humanity. Rose also picked out her own outfits for her character. The jersey she wore with #10 was also a reference to Johnny Depp in Nightmare on Elm Street.
- When Billy hit Stu in the head with the phone, it was an accident on Skeets part. The fake blood was so sticky and ended up hitting Matthew Lillard instead of the desk, and his "Oww You hit me with the phone D***" was a real reaction to it. Wes loved it as well, so he kept it, lol. Matthew also improved most of his kitchen scene with his lines, like with "Houston, we have a problem," "the peer pressure," and the comment about his parents going to be so mad, lol.
- That WHOLE kitchen scene took 5 days to film because of the amount of high energy that was used as well with the fake blood (corn syrup dyed red).
- Neve Campbell and Matthew Lillard actually started dating while filming Scream and were together for almost 3 years. So that whole "I've always had a thing for you, Sid" was true, lol. He originally auditioned for Billy, but the casting didn't believe that someone like Neve/Sidney would date someone like him, lol. So he ended up getting Stu, and Skeet got Billy cause of his look alike to Johnny Depp. The funny thing is that even though the casting thought that about Matthew, they ended up dating real life anyway 😂 Skeet and Matthew talk about that often at the conventions, lol.
- When Billy got stabbed with the umbrella the 2nd time, it actually hit Skeet, where he had heart surgery when he was younger, so that scream he let out was his real action to the pain.
- Drew Barrymore was supposed to play Sidney. But she ended up changing her mind and went to Wes with an idea to have her as the open kill cause no one would expect it. Also, it would show if they could kill off a huge star right off the bat it would mean NO ONE was safe. It was the BIGGEST surprise shock effect for the audience cause they assumed she would be the leading character and they played into the with the publicity.
-Even though Billy was at Sidneys for the attack. It was actually Stu who she fought with when he was tripping up the stairs. You can hear ghostface saying "easy" "easy". The next day at the lockers, he was checking his face in Tatums mirror for any bruises, and when Tatum was hitting him with her sucker he says "easy" "easy.
-Billy was always 1 handed with his killing if he had a knife if didn't he resorts to choking except for Tatum he used the opportunity with the garage door. He gave a signal look to Stu at the front door that Tatum was dead. Stu uses both hands when using the knife and resorts to other tactics if he doesn't have a knife like the both times he fought Sidney.
-Stu was the one that called Dewey about the abandoned car and also called Randy about the principal after the whole "I'll be right back." Billy killed the principal so they could use him as a deploy for later that night to get the rest of the guests to leave so the real party could begin.
- Dewey was supposed to die in this one, but Wes Craven and everyone just loved David Arquette and how he played his character. They all fell in love with him, so at the end, Wes had Dewey do the thumbs up to show the audience that he survived.
- The casting also wanted David Arquette to audition for the role of "Billy Loomis" but instead he wanted to audition for the role of "Dewey" cause he found out that Dewey would get to kiss Courtney Cox character "Gale". He had a big crush on Courtney and they started dating after filming the 1st Scream.
You are the master of scream trivia. Every detail 👏👏👏 thanks for sharing.
@@CasualNerdReactions Haha thank you 😂 I literally grew up with the franchise its one of my comfort/guilty pleasure movies lol.
Three things that I love about this franchise:
1. Ghostface is an actual human person who's killing people. It's not like a Freddy Krueger, Jason, or Michael Myers. Scream is something that can actually happen in real life, and that's what makes it relatable and frightening. That's actually how Kevin created "Scream" by basing the plot loosely on the 1990 case of the Gainesville Ripper.
Making Ghostface somewhat clumsy also made it a realistic human. (Also, the robe is very easy to trip over.) I love the mystery of who done it.
2. The self-awareness and rules about horror movies and how Wes Craven and Kevin Williamson play on it.
3. Typically, in horror movies, it's always the killer that continues on the franchise with a whole new cast to kill off. But in Scream, it's the opposite. It's the "final girl" who carries on the franchise who's fighting against different killers who are portrayed as Ghostface.
- it's interesting with Ghostface how he seems intimidating and unkillable when hiding behind the mask. But once it comes off for the revealing, it's like he or she becomes vulnerable and then ends up getting killed. It's kind of like how people hide behind computer and phone screens they come off as aggressive and intimidating, always picking a fight. But then, when it comes to dealing one on one in person exposed they become complete opposite and are actually weak.
Roger L. Jackson is a spine-chilling Ghostface.
Scream and the Saw franchise (other than Spiral, the Chris Rock reboot) are my favorite horror franchises!
A little backstory of how Scream got created.
Kevin Williamson wrote the story, originally titled Scary Movie, and based the plot loosely on the 1990 case of the Gainesville Ripper. It was a string of murders in a small town... Then it was changed to "Scream" cause the Ghostface costume was a close resemble to the Scream painting. The Ghostface costume was originally going to be all white but Wes Craven said it was to much like the KKK so he did the black robe with a white face. Kevin wanted to create a story that has horror but also with some comedy of making it a self aware with the horror universe. But also use a relatable story that truly happened as a baseline. So many Directors wanted to be a part of it. There was even a big bidding war. He chose Wes Craven cause he was the only one who truly understood the story and his vision. Kevin wrote majority of the franchise and Wes Craven directed all of the Scream movies except for "Scream 2022" and "Scream 6". He died after making the 4th.
The title of "Scary Movie" ended up being used for the parody movies since Kevin didn't use it. The 1st Scary Movie was about Scream, Scream 2, I know what you did last summer, the Blair witch project, Urban Legend, the sixth sense, The usual suspects, the Matrix, a very brief Dawson's Creek. .
another easter egg from this movie .. The same scene with you catching freddy as the janitor. Fun fact the person who was in the freddy suit was Wes Craven. Same person who filmed Freddy and Scream. So when Tatum said to Dewey at the sherrifs office said "He's my superior" then Tatum replied "your janitor is your superior" . xD
first horror that scared me I was 8 when this was came out and I remember it being on at a friends house her older sister was watching and i never slept again for years lol
1. What I like most about doing this is watching people overthink it. Thank GOD for the twist ending.
2. Cell phones weren't prevalent in 1996.
3. This is a movie to watch if you want to have fun.
4. The principal was the Fonz/Henry Winkler.
5. Tatum/Rose McGowan has permission to sit on my face.😋😍
6. I love how the inept killer keeps getting his ass kicked🤣
this movie is more interesting knowing that courtney cox and david arquette started dating during this movie, eventually getting married
It's the week Edvard Munch has been waiting for
This comment is a work of art. 🖼️
I grew up in and around a lot of the shooting locations for this film. Only place I haven't been is Sydney's house, Stu's place and Casey Beckers.
I used to rent vhs at Randy's video rental store. That was a Bradley Video.
Experiencing this movie's initial release could never be duplicated. They marketed Drew Barrymore SO HEAVILY, she was on every poster. She was "supposed to be" a main character. She was one of, if not THE BIGGEST, name on the roster.
Then..... whoa
Honestly, pretty brilliant move!
@@CasualNerdReactions Drew Barrymore wanted to play that part because she thought it would be more of a surprise. Kind of hearkens back to "Psycho" but even faster.
@@CasualNerdReactions I think I know why they did that. The movie Psycho is referenced a lot in this. When Psycho came out, Janet Leigh was an EXTREMELY popular actress. Everyone loved her. She was the main image on all the posters, mentioned in all of the marketing. At that time, the "hero" never died. Ever. So when she was not only killed off, but killed off so early in the film, it shocked the world. I mean, people were really upset about it. But, Alfred Hitchcock's decision opened up an entirely new realm of possibility for future filmmakers, to make more risky decisions. ❤
And keep in mind that at the same time Billy is doing all this complaining about Sydney not letting him sleep with her, he’s also cheating on her and getting the other girl pregnant. Some of the weirder fans got upset at that retcon, because I guess they thought it would be totally out of character for the multiple murderer and horrible misogynist to also do that.
How out of character indeed! 🤣 I think some fans subscribe to the theory that Billy died because he lost his virginity to Sidney that night as a twist or extra layer to the horror film rules. Which could have applied prior to the reboot, although it was definitely never explicitly stated within the films themselves.
@@CasualNerdReactions Billy confesses to the 🍇 of Sydney's mother, so anyone who thought he was a virgin before Sydney wasn't paying attention.
Rose McGowan could actually fit through the cat door and had to pretend to be struggling.
I don't know...of the two I think Stu was more unhinged. Billy was just too psychotic and focused to be truly unhinged. To Stu it was more of a game and I don't know a bit of hero worship of Billy (maybe even a little bro crush? I kind of got that vibe from Stu) given he's always looking to Billy for approval of his actions
Stu was the most fun anyway 😅
I'm happy to see that you'll be reacting to one of my favorite horror franchises! I'm really looking forward to watching all of the upcoming videos! If you haven't seen the Conjuring films yet, I would love it if you would also eventually react to those. There's quite a lot of them, so you'll have plenty of content if you decide to react to those. Just an idea, of course.
I definitely should watch that series at some point!
I really like this movie. The story is good and I love the jump scare moments and humor. Two thumbs up.
Mixing humor with horror is my absolute favorite type of film to react to, I'm pretty sure.
This is gonna be a fun week 😁
I had fun, that's for sure. 😆
This soundtrack is so good. I think I still have the CD somewhere. 🎶🎶🎶
It's especially jarring now to see that big dramatic shot of a cell phone falling out of Billy's pocket, because of course a teenager would NEVER have one of those unless they were the killer. This was basically the tail end of when that could make sense, as just one year later we got Buffy the Vampire Slayer, which quickly became notorious for pretending that cell phones didn't exist for almost its entire run, just because the whole writing staff had absolutely no idea how to build tension if the characters could easily contact each other whenever.
"Two young teenagers were found brutally murdered"--as opposed to two old teenagers, I guess.
The reporter asking Sid ,"How does it feel to be almost brutally butchered" is Linda Blair (Reagan from the Exorcist) 🫶I see you Wes Craven
I'm back to say I really enjoyed this movie and having no opening credits really let's you get into it right away, a nice touch in my opinion
Scream week snuck up on me 😢 I wish I'd already seen them all so I could see all your reactions but I'll be back for 3 on after I do. ❤🌹
See you then!! Was 3 your introduction to the franchise?
No but I've seen 1 and 2 so often I think I've memorized them.
There are prosecutors and judges who would still be determined to execute Cotton. There’s a whole school of (non)thought that says if there was nothing wrong with a trial procedurally then a guilty verdict has to stand no matter what.
Steve's death has always been kind of perplexing, and it comes off that way in most reactions. When I was younger, I assumed it had something to do with an MPAA / BBFC gore trim. But actually it's just badly edited. It was written to have him killed without the audience seeing the killer, but clearly they didn't quite know how to film it. So it comes off janky.
Since no one's gunna say this but it was Drue's idea to kill herself off in the first scene.
You have to shake your JiffyPop while it's popping.
Is there any chance I can BEG you to watch “The Strangers”? Would love to get your take on this film. The way you feel for characters and how you react, this would be a good watch. It’ll probably scar you (a little) but it’s a well crafted horror film.
I found the strangers to be boring. And sadly the new movie was just the old movie remade. it’s just people standing in the background unnoticed a lot.
Yes! My Favorite Franchise ❤❤❤
A "cellular phone."
Do they even make JiffyPop anymore?
I think they do, but I'm not sure if it's as readily available as it once was.
Please watch Ju-on (2002)
