My first time watching Beetlejuice (1988). A total scumbag surrounded by really interesting ghosts and a family that kind of deserved it! This film was exactly like I expected, yet also nothing like I expected. Every character was perfectly cast and it definitely delivered a ton of fun! I hope you enjoyed my Beetlejuice movie reaction & commentary

Something that took me MANY rewatches to notice is the heavy implication in the beginning of the movie that the reason for Adam and Barbara’s staycation is because they recently lost a pregnancy. They never come out and say but Adam makes a comment about trying again that Barbara pushes away. Then when the sister is intruding and mentions the house being the right size for a family, she realizes immediately that she made a mistake saying that just by the look Barbara gives her. Barabara’s reaction also seems more than just one of someone who doesn’t want kids and more like that of someone who lost one. This is why Adam and Barbara (her especially) so quickly take to filling the parental role with Lydia, giving her the love and attention she wasn’t getting.

I don’t think the movie is implying that at all. I think the pregnancy stuff was just characterization. The Maitlands became ghosts because they died in an accident. If you remember, all the ghosts in the afterlife waiting room also died accidentally.

    "Are you a ghost, too?"
"I'm a ghost with the most, babe."
Fun Fact: Michael Keaton, playing the title character, only appears in 14.5 minutes of the film.
Music Enthusiast Fact: Tim Burton feared the "Day-O" sequence wouldn't go over well, since in his opinion it wasn't very funny. He turned out to be wrong: audiences loved it and think of it as one of the film's most iconic scenes.
Parapsychology Foreshadowing Fact: At the dinner party, Otho states that people who commit suicide end up as "civil servants" in the afterlife. This is actually expanded on in the film. The civil servant ghosts that Adam and Barbara meet are people who appear to have ended their own lives. The receptionist says she committed suicide, there is a man who hanged himself, and the crushed messenger is implied to have done it to himself. Juno looks normal, but there are scars on her neck that indicate she cut her own throat. Beetlejuice is said to have been a civil servant and Juno's assistant; it was going to be explained in the film that he hanged himself (incompetently and very painfully), due to heartbreak. While this was cut out of the film for running time purposes, it is hinted when Beetlejuice is surprised at Lydia wishing to die.

    "What is this music?"
Danny Elfman, of the iconic 80's new-wave band "Oingo Boingo" ("Weird Science" "Dead Man's Party")
This is one of Elfman's first movie scores and the beginning of his long, successful collaboration with Tim Burton.
Although his score for Raimi's Spider-Man is Spider-Man's theme for the generation that grew up on it, and how iconic his Batman theme is, this score is the most uniquely Danny Elfman and sounds a lot like Oingo Boingo

Since you’ve already seen Nightmare Before Christmas, something you can notice in a rewatch is when Beetlejuice comes out of the floor dressed as a circus character and the hammer arms, there’s a Jack Skellington face on the top of the hat he wears. It’s the first time Jack appears on film ever. Apparently, Tim Burton has added Jack Skellington’s face in a couple of his films. It’s a matter of finding it.

So, I don't normally post personal things online, but I need to tell you this story. Growing up, I had sleep paralysis and thought my house was haunted. My childhood home was built in 1850, so I was already in a creepy environment.
Anyway, I was a kid and knew nothing about sleep paralysis. All I knew was that sometimes dark figures would stand over my bed while I slept and I just assumed they were ghosts. I told no one in my family about this. Mainly because I was afraid they would think I was crazy.
Then, Beetlejuice came out and I could see my "ghosts" as something friendly and it made me feel better. I faked being sick from school one day and watched the vhs three times in a row. After that, I started having conversations with my "ghosts" about how I wanted to live in peace. I was still pretty scared, but I at least felt like I had some control over what was happening.
As I've grown up, I've learned to enjoy this movie for other reasons. I'm glad you liked Beetlejuice. It definitely holds a special place in my heart.

Sleep paralysis is weird! I used to get it a lot when I worked nights and in college when I didn't sleep enough. Even when you know what it is, it doesn't make it any better! I even figured out a way to tell when I was having it. There was a certain book near my bed with large red letters on a black spine. I figured oug that during sleep paralysis, I could read the title. If I was actually awake, I couldn't, because I'm near sighted and didn't sleep with my contacts in. So I would always look for the book.

Alright, all is forgiven after the Ferris Bueller's Day Off reaction, you understood this one perfectly. I've seen people go into this movie expecting I know not what but absolutely not getting it at all. It's a fun and silly movie with a very sincere core. I will say that as a kid I thought Delia was the absolute worst but there are moments as the movie goes on when you see her discussing the situation with her husband and they both look sincerely concerned about raising Lydia in a haunted house. And in the climactic sequence when Lydia runs to them, Delia holds her close and tries to protect her from Beetlejuice. She's not much use but she's a long way from a wicked stepmother when she's holding the scared kid and trying at least a little to keep him from taking her away.

If you watch Tim Burton's next film, Batman, you can see that he grew a lot more confident and his film-making became much more dynamic. There are three movies that I consider essential to the Burton canon: Batman Returns, Edward Scissorhands, and Beetlejuice. Congrats on getting to see one of his best movies.
(The Nightmare Before Christmas would make it four, but while it's heavily influenced by Burton it's technically not directed by him.)
My first taste of Burton was Peewee's Big Adventure (1985) -- I was 5 -- but Beetlejuice just sealed it for me.
Have you seen Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street (2007)? If not, you should see Sweeney Todd. It's a Tim Burton *musical*. About murder.
And if we're talking about musicals about murder, I would never forgive myself if I failed to mention Little Shop of Horrors (1986). No Tim Burton connection, but also a fantastic film, and one that had a big impact on my sense of humor as a Xennial.

And Tim's father was as disinterested in him and his artistic goals as Lydia's parents were to her. There is a lot of the directors life reflected in Burton's movies when you read the unauthorized biography of Tim Burton.

The cartoon makes Beetlejuice and Lydia friends 😬 As a kid I never realized how creepy it was the Beetlejuice tried to marry Lydia... though I do love him calling her "Edgar Allan Poe's daughter" 🖤

Think about it. This movie came out one year before Batman. When we heard Keaton was going to play Bruce Wayne, after seeing this movie and his other comedies, we couldn't believe it. It turned out to be the best Batman movie of them all.

I love Winona in this movie! If you haven't seen her in the netflix show "stranger things"-please do! She is amazing as the deeply caring, ferocious mom Joyce Byers-the kids are amazing too (the whole cast is). It was her comeback to acting after leaving Hollywood for a bit, and the love she seems to have for her younger costars is adorable. The fourth season just came out-I'd love to see your reactions!

This was going be more darker and violent in the original screenplay:
As Adam and Barbara get into an accident, she breaks her arm so badly, a bone can be seen sticking out.
Beetlejuice was going to be a shape shifting demon that was going he played by Sammy Davis Jr, Dean Martin or Sam Kinison.
He would take the form of various characters and creatures like a demented Easter Bunny, a horrifying Santa Claus, a gargoyle, a dragon and a giant rabid squirrel.
The Deetz Family had a another daughter Kathy, whom befriends Adam and Barbara knowing that they are ghosts.
The films ending was a lot different than the what we expected:
Beetlejuice was going to kill Kathy while he was planning on Raping Lydia but the Deetz Family and the Maitlands perform an exorcism to send Beetlejuice back to hell. They used the ritual to bring Kathy to life
Both families then part ways while the Deetz's return to New York, Adam and Barbara stay in a miniature version of their house.

If you've seen the 80's Saturday-morning cartoon, that has a slightly more focused idea of what the writers were AIMING for, with BJ as a sort of gothy prankster version of Aladdin's Genie, before Michael Keaton warped the character into an unfunny foul-mouthed ranting scumbag.
Not sure if this was before or after Keaton's "wired" period, where he transitioned from the hipster comedy of "Mr. Mom" to the dark-creepy psychos of "Batman"..Maybe it's the missing link between the two.

One of the greatest first films by any director ever. Flawlessly written, directed, and acted with a perfect cast. The great Catherine O'Hara's Delia was a Karen before Karens, and the brilliant and legendary Sylvia Sidney as Juno was a major star in the 30s, very talented and stunningly beautiful.

If you enjoyed the film, I think you would like the musical better; Beetlegeuse and Lydia are the main focus while the Maitlands are more supporting characters. Sophia Anne Caruso is the original Lydia in the Broadway performance. There are clips of her performances on TH-cam and she was just in the new Netflix film The School of Good and Evil. Gena Davis is an amazing actres as Barbara; I highly recommend her films Stuart Little trilogy. Catherine O’Hara was amazing as well; I recommend her film with Christina Ricci, Penelope.
