Great choice! But I think Stand By Me is an even better choice.
I regard The Goonies as the yin to Stand By Me's yang. Where The Goonies is a fun comedy adventure, it has its touches of darkness. Where Stand By Me is a weighty drama, it has its touches of lightheartedness and comedy. Each of the boys has a counterpart in each movie and there are so many things between these two movies that "rhyme", if you know what I mean.

When you see somebody react to a movie you love, you're always hoping they like it as much as you did. Glad you enjoyed it! It's a fun kids adventure. I loved watching it as a kid in the 80s, and it still brings out the kid in me when I see it today. Fun Fact: They wanted to get the kids' genuine reactions when they saw the ship for the first time. Josh Brolin (Brand) had a genuine reaction: He blurted out "F*ck!"...and ruined the take. So they filmed it again, without the curse words.

If you're wondering about Data's line at the end "The octopus was very scary," there was a scene of them being attacked by an octopus that got cut, but the complex conversations going on between everyone in the final scene meant it was more trouble than it was worth to take out that reference to it.

Every time I see this movie in recent years, I am reminded of the first time I saw Fellowship of the Ring and I kept getting pulled out of the story by remembering other roles the various actors played. Most notably Gandalf as Magneto, Elrond as Agent Smith, and Samwise as Mikey. In Moria I kept on expecting him to pull out "It's their time up there, up there it's their time. Down here it's our time, it's our time down here."

"Don't you realize? The next time you see sky, it'll be over another town. The next time you take a test, it'll be in some other school. Our parents, they want the best of stuff for us. But right now, they got to do what's right for them. Because it's their time. Their time! Up there! Down here, it's our time. It's our time down here. That's all over the second we ride up Troy's bucket."
Fun Fact: One Eyed Willie's ship, "The Inferno", was 105 feet long and took 2-1/2 months to construct. It was modeled after Errol Flynn's ship in The Sea Hawk (1940). The sails required more than 7,000 sq. ft. of material, the largest measured 30 ft. by 60 ft. The cast was not allowed to see the pirate ship before the scene was shot, as director Richard Donner wanted to catch their genuine reactions at the size and scope of it. When they did see it, Josh Brolin was so surprised that he exclaimed "Holy shit!" ...The scene had to be re-shot. When filming ended, some of the ship's rigging was recycled for the "Pirates Of The Caribbean" ship at Disneyland, which was being renovated at the time.
Heartbreaking Fact: According to Sean Astin, he was allowed to keep the treasure map used in the film. Several years later his mother Patty Duke (an actress herself) discovered it, thought it was just a crinkled piece of paper, and threw it in the bin.

    • @CasualNerdReactions

    • @BigGator5
      @BigGator5 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Indeed. I do have one more thing to add:
Historical Fact: The Fratellis are loosely based off Ma Barker and the Barker-Karpis gang during the "public enemy era" of America crime history. While Ma Barker's leadership is in dispute, she was definitely an accomplish to the gang's many robberies and murders. Ma Barker and the gang met their end in a house off Lake Weir in Florida. You should read more about them.

This was one of my childhood movies and I recently got to take my 15-year-old to see it in a theater where they play an older film every other Wednesday. I was worried that she might think it was too cheesy or be too uncomfortable watching in a crowded theater since she’s been dealing with anxiety, but no… she loved it. We both got to see Casablanca at that theater for the first time, too. I recommend checking your local theaters to see if any play older films. I better start with a confession regarding the film. The first time I ever watched it was in a English lesson just before Christmas in 1985. The trouble is the copy that teacher had got was a pirate video, no pun intended!!!! Still, it was such an enjoyable film to watch and I think that it still holds up well today. It was made all the more special as there was a classroom full of children not only excited to see such a new film at the time but to get out of an English lesson!

21:16 Fun fact: That is the gang’s actual reaction to the ship, for the most part.
I’ll explain; the whole set for the ship, the director for the set design actually forbid them from seeing it being built, it was all behind closed doors so it wasn’t until they did the water slide scene that they did see the inside. The reason for “the most part” though was because they had to do more take’s because their initial reaction was cursing in surprise. 🤣
Bonus fact: Ever wondered what happened to the ship after filming? Well if you’ve been to Disneyland you may have already seen the outcome. Yep, the ship was repurposed for the classic Pirates of the Caribbean ride!

I was 8 when it came out- my parents took me to see it and because the tv spots heavily leaned into the pirate stuff and the title had a skull in it, I was sure they were taking me to see something scary. What a surprise! It was the movie everyone went back to school on Monday and talked about. We were constantly pretending to be part of The Goonies forevermore!
The video for Mick Jagger and David Bowie singing "Dancing in the Streets" was attached to the film- my dad was pumped to see "a short" before the movie. I had no concept of what a short was and fully expected to see some short pants when we walked into the theater.

"Hey You Guys!" was a catch phrase from the PBS 70s kids educational show The Electric Company. It was kind of in the vein of Sesame Street but hipper and urban w kids of all shapes and colors. It might have been one of the first with Black, Latino, and White kids all together. I loved that show.
The Goonies, like ET, was the ultimate expression of American childhood. Not that we had adventures like The Goonies but we all had little adventures as kids independent of our parents. I remember us grade school kids all tearing around the neighborhood on our bikes after school, building a club house in a vacant lot (sometimes smoking cigarettes we stole from our parents), and swimming in a ditch that ran through it. This movie captures that independent spirit and made it the ultimate fantasy. Sadly, the 80s might have been the last decade where childhood was like that.

    • @ScientificallyStupid
      @ScientificallyStupid 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yes, I worry that kids now cant ever have adventures like that because parents hover and schedule soooo much. Kids aren't left to their own devices anymore (in spite of them ostensibly being even safer these days! They can always be in touch with an adult if something happens)- we had a long stretch of time between breakfast and dinner to get up to anything we could think of. Good times.

I remember when I first saw this and when Mouth spoke Spanish in the first act I kinda thought (hmm, Mouth can speak Spanish all for a "joke.") It just felt somehow a bit random for the purpose of a "gag."
But then when they needed someone to translate Spanish along the way, Mouth was their "go to." Without establishing it earlier, Mouth's ability to speak Spanish might suddenly have seemed convenient, like "oh, so Mouth speaks Spanish, that's lucky."

As an adult, he lost a ton of weight and decided to study law.
Today, he's a successful Legal Representative in L.A.
    Just some "random trivia" 😁

So the movie that Sloth is watching on the tv when he's chained up is "Captain Blood" (1935, Errol Flynn) - I highly recommend that film as well "Adventures of Robin Hood" (1938) as Errol Flynn, Olivia deHavilland, & Basil Rathbone co-starred in both films. Robin Hood also has Claude Rains, while Captain Blood has Lionel Atwill & my favorite Ross Alexander.

So, I couldn't believe that it was 1985 when this came out due to my denial about getting older in general, so I looked it up. Did you know that it was released on this day in 1985? Of course, maybe you planned that? lol

*Monster Squad* is another one in somewhat the same vein only it involves several of the Universal Classic Monsters.

Fun fact: They actually had a scene in the movie with an octopus, but later cut it from the film. So when Data mentions the octopus it just makes it look like they were exaggerating what they went through. Fun reaction as usual. Have a great day/night.xx

    A.bstract I.nversion discovery!
The attic held many Easter eggs.
One is the Tesla static ball!
    Mirror:
Sloth's popular "Hey you guuuys!" came from Rita (West Side Story) Moreno who shouted that phrase on the '71-'77 kids show...'The Electric Company.'
I used to watch it and remember my first time ever seeing Stan Lee's name during their horrible 'Spiderman' skits. 🤤🤣

After becoming his new house scriptwriter-darling after "Gremlins", x-producer Steven Spielberg commissioned a number of projects from Chris Columbus, and the first was "A movie version of Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride"...Oh, yeah, I could tell right away.
The second was "Young Sherlock Holmes", which was a much more imaginative and less obnoxious 80's movie, that may have gotten Columbus the directing job on the first Harry Potter movies: th-cam.com/video/PVTHS6vyOZw/w-d-xo.html
