My first time watching A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984). Yes! This movie really defines the term nightmare. A truly original horror idea executed to near perfection. I hope you enjoyed my A Nightmare on Elm Street movie reaction & commentary

Not really my type pf genre to watch but the reactions are fun.
Another "dream" based film you might enjoy is "Dreamscape" you don't have to do a reaction but I'd be interested to see what you thought if you did.

Despite some dated elements, janky effects and questionable acting, the original Elm Street is still a classic for a reason. The real killers are your PARENTS!

      One of the sequels--
      "Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare"--
      offers more information
      on Freddy's backstory.
Langenkamp & a couple of others
      who'd been in "...Nightmare..." movies
      later became among the stars
of a sitcom, which made various
      references to these movies
      (fourteen minutes, 28 seconds)--

The 3rd movie, Dream Warriors was my favorite of the series. Like that Nancy didn't play the victim. She figured out what was happening and tried to go after him. Most just run screaming fall down and get killed.

What is interesting is how the horror franchises evolved. Nightmare on Elm Street movies became about the puns and weird kills while Friday the 13th became about finding unique ways to kill people with ordinary objects.

What DID they know? That someone with the same name existed and is long dead by now. Of course they wouldn't assume that his ghost returned to kill teenagers in their sleep, they'd assume that Nancy must have read about him somewhere and subconsciously gave her nightmares a face. OF COURSE you'd think someone who insists that what happens to you in your nightmare happens to you in real life because of a demon is psychologically damaged.

As a kid I watched all the slasher movies when they came out on vhs and they did scare me but even as a kid I reasoned with myself that they (Michael Myers, Jason Voorhees, Leather Face) could all be escaped by getting on a plane and constantly running away, Freddy was the one concept that truly scared me because you eventually would need to sleep and then you're done.

For such a low body count, Wes makes every kill memorable. Tina's wall crawling and Glenn's blood fountain are both great effects.
But Robert Englund steals every scene as Freddy, and he's the reason to continue the series. He has so much fun playing the character that it makes him a joy to watch, even in the lesser entries of the series.

    "It's only a dream!"
    "Come to Freddy."
    "Goddamn you!"
Fun Fact: Film debut of Johnny Depp. One of the main reasons Johnny Depp was chosen was because Wes Craven's daughter thought he was "dreamy" and threatened to run away from home if he wasn't cast in the movie.
Knife Gauntlet Fact: The idea behind the glove was a practical one on Wes Craven's part, as he wanted to give the character a unique weapon, but also something that could be made cheaply and wouldn't be difficult to use or transport. At the time he was studying primal fears embedded in the subconscious of people of all cultures, and discovered that one of those fears is attack by animal claws. Around the same time, he saw his cat unsheathe its claws, and the two concepts merged, although in the original script the blades were fishing knives, not steak knives, as in the finished film.
Sleepy Inspiration Fact: Wes Craven first came up with the basic idea for the movie from a series of articles in the Los Angeles Times over a three-year period, about a group of Southeast Asian refugees from the Hmong tribe, several of whom died in the throes of horrific nightmares. The group had come to the U.S. to escape the murderous reign of Pol Pot, and within a year of arriving, three men had died all in similar situations, the young, otherwise healthy man would have a nightmare, then refuse to sleep for as long as he could. When he finally fell asleep from exhaustion, he awoke screaming, then died. Autopsy results revealed that they had not died from heart failure, but had simply died. It was this inability to find a cause of death that intrigued Craven so much. Medical authorities have since called the phenomenon Asian Death Syndrome, a variant of Sudden Unexpected Death Syndrome (SUDS), and Brugada Syndrome.

For me, the two entries directed by Wes Craven (this one and New Nightmare (1994) are easily the best. One clear advantage the series has over other slasher franchises is the level of imagination. Even the worst films of the series use nightmares to present unique dreamscapes and imagery that could only make sense in a dream.

It's been 11 or 12 years since I watched this movie and even now I get chills just thinking of Glenn's death, ugh!
Also, this movie is somewhat inspired by true events:
The basis of the film was inspired by several newspaper articles printed in the Los Angeles Times in the 1970s about Hmong refugees, who, after fleeing to the United States because of war and genocide in Laos, Cambodia, and Vietnam, suffered disturbing nightmares and refused to sleep. Some of the men died in their sleep soon after. Medical authorities called the phenomenon Asian Death Syndrome. The condition afflicted men between the ages of 19 and 57 and was believed to be sudden unexplained death syndrome or Brugada syndrome or both.

I was terrified of Freddy as a child in the 80s. The comic shop I used to visit got a cardboard standee of Freddy and I couldn’t go in without one of my parents I was so scared. Then I had a dream that I killed Freddy when I was 10 and was never afraid of him again, but I became a huge fan of his films.
I consider the original to be a true masterpiece of the horror genre (despite the ending). I put it up there with ALIEN and The Thing.

  • @evanirvana500

I always call this the last of the trifecta of slasher movies in this time. Halloween with Michael Meyers I believe was first and closely followed by Friday the 13th and Jason Voorhees second (very close together, I could be wrong about which was first), and finally nightmare on elm Street with Freddy a few years later. Both inspired countless sequels and remakes which I think Halloween being the longest running. Nightmare definitely had the most original plot, and Freddy was the smartest of all 3 villains. Michael and Jason were basically just killing machines without much thought and no dialogue at all. Nightmare and Friday the 13th does a crossover which was entertaining and Wes Cravens new Nightmare was great because it merged reality with fiction. Wes craven was a master...rip.

I always thought an interesting reboot would have been freddy was innocent but it was the kids who we led to say he did it, they sort o nodded to it in the remake, but it would make more sense to kill the kids if their false testimony led to his death. but i like remakes when they add something to the lore, or gives us a different view

Loved this reaction review for this. I remember my parents watching this in probably 1985 and I was also watching it. It freaked me out but I was only 6. But by the time the 3 film came out I loved this series.
The teens that he goes after in 1, 3 and part of 4 are all the children of those who directly murdered him and he has returned to take his revenge on taking their children away from them. Originally Freddy was a child molester and murder but the removed the molester part from the script bit it is implied that he was.
Fun fact: Wes Craven got this idea from a traumatic creepy childhood moment and a series of newspaper articles about people who claimed they would die if they went to sleep.

I missed this movie in theaters, but I rented it as soon as it came out on VHS. My friend and I settled in to watch it late at night on a sleep over one weekend when my parents were gone. I got totally freaked out by Freddie pushing through the wall over where Nancy was sleeping and the whole sequence of Tina's death made it worse. By the time Tina showed up in the body bag I was done, and I turned it off before Nancy got to the corner following the blood trail. I spent the rest of that night in my parent's bed with the lights on, dozing off and waking up with a jerk to check the wall above the bed. I finally finished the movie the next day in the daytime so it was less scary. To this day it remains one of the best horror movies I've ever seen because of how unique and creative it is, especially compared to the shambling villains of Halloween and Friday the 13th.
If you like the idea of Freddie, I recommend the 3rd movie "Dream Warriors" and "A New Nightmare" but I wouldn't bother with any of the others; they get really campy and cheesy and are only worth a look if you want to see Freddie kill people in new, inventive ways. Well, maybe watch Freddie vs Jason to see them pitted against each other by some smart but still inevitably dead kids - but whatever you do... Don't Watch the Remake! It seriously sucks!

I like P. 2. Like you I missed the 1st one in theaters. I loved horror (still do of course) and rented it on VHS, then bought it I loved it so much.
I saw P. 2 in theaters (twice). I realize (now) it has issues but I enjoy most of it and what does work, works well.
Saw P. 3 in theaters SEVERAL times, it's my second favorite after the 1st.
I saw P. 4 a few times in theaters as well, but lately (to be clear, I still enjoy it) it feels like it hasn't aged well. Maybe I just enjoy "DREAM WARRIORS" too much and P. 4 will always be a step down.🤷. Other than maybe "New Nightmare" everything after P. 4 is GOD AWFUL (I DESPISE "FREDDY'S DEAD"😑😒🙄)
      But, that's just my opinion.

    Hey Chris,
I agree, many Characters behave...weird, and the ending doesn't fit to the rest of the movie in my opinion (especially when it comes to part 2), but I still like the movies for their creativity when it comes to visualise nighmares (Freddie's glove in the bathtube, the boy got sucked into his bed, the girl sinking into the stairs...). On top, you never know if you're safe because as the story goes on, you can't tell what's dream and what's reality, which is the most scary thing on this franchise, not the shocking effects or the jump scares.

I remember seeing the trailer for this at the video store when I was a kid and it terrified me. I had to see it! Haha. I saw parts 1-3 on video and then was old enough to see part 4 onward on the big screen. I do love the franchise but some entries don't age as well and the quality of some is definitely weaker. My personal watch list is 1, 3, 4, 7. (2 is sorta standalone and good in its own way).
Re: the final scenes...(my own opinion, not based on fact): I don't think the term is used until the remake but when the kids are that sleep deprived they start having micronaps! Slipping in and out of a dream while still being awake.
Nancy getting a phonecall from Freddy on the tongue-phone while she's awake is an example.
I do think she pulled him into the real world and kicked the crap outta him and the fire where he kills the mom happened, but I think that's the last we see of him. He disappears back into the the dream world in a very weakened state, not re-emerging until the sequel.
I think after Donald leaves her to go downstairs and Freddy comes back out of the bed - this part I don't think happened. I think this is a very exhausted Nancy finally asleep and dreaming that she's taking back his power and getting her friends back.
My pov is that her final nightmare is exactly that, just a result of all that hell she went through. A literal metaphor of Freddy driving her crazy.
(Or it could just be some sloppy revisions and a forced add-on ending because producer Bob Shaye demanded it). Whos to say?

My favorite Robert Englund film isn't any of the Elm Street movies, but a lesser known adaptation called The Phantom of the Opera. I've seen this and its sequel, Freddie's Revenge, tho. Part one is definitely the better film, but I find part 2 to be more enjoyable.

Came across this video, gave it a watch. Couple of thoughts to share on the film: (trigger warning, I talk about some heavy topics)
You touched on the idea that just communicating would have changed the outcome a great deal, and this is in my opinion the whole point of the movie. It's about things left unsaid and the damage that can do. We are presented with Elm Street - a typical affluent suburban street in Reagan's America. Perfect, peaceful, quiet. But just underneath that there are all the things left unspoken, this mother is an alcoholic, that father is detached and distant, this kid has no parents and lives with his grandparents, etc, etc, etc. It's all there, but unsaid. Everyone just pretends it's all fine and carries on with their lives. I see Freddy in this film as a metaphor for repressed trauma. What's unsaid in the film (deliberately) is that Freddy was intended to be a sexual predator who killed his victims to silence them. When Nancy's mother tells her about Fred, she lies and calls him a child murderer, leaving the most horrible part unsaid. The strong implication is that Nancy, Glen, Tina, and Rod were all abused by Fred in real life, and their nightmares about Freddy are the side-effect of repressing that trauma. Not even their own parents can acknowledge it happened, which only drives the trauma deeper and deeper. In the end, only by acknowledging Freddy and then firmly turning her back on him can Nancy come to terms with her trauma and move on.
That last scene... yeah. It's not good. The producers had them add in the bit with Freddy snatching the mum. It was supposed to be a dream, and Nancy wakes up find none of it happened, but the producers complained that it made the film not scary. Ugh.

    • @Nick-pu3of
      @Nick-pu3of ปีที่แล้ว

P.S. Part 3 carries on this theme of trauma really well, and is one of the very few depictions of mental health in horror where the bad guy *isn't* the one with a history of mental health problems, it's the victims. Makes an excellent follow-up to the first film, but ignore the rest of the series entirely. Wes Craven's New Nightmare is also a good film, a meta commentary in which the cast of the first film play themselves and explore the same themes again.

I love the first one the most, the third is also by Wes Craven and is also pretty good, Part Two is a wild ride and I'd love to see a reaction from you on that one, cos it has a lot to say. The franchise dips real hard after three. The 2010 remake is probably one of the worst of these recent reboots by a mile. You can skip that one for sure. Loved your reaction to this classic!

The #2 sequel to the movie was a legendary off-topic studio-concocted dumpster fire, and New Line thought they were going to wrap things up properly in the #3 sequel-
Only to give us “Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors”, which reinvented the series, and arguably one of the fan favorite horror films of the 80’s.

That the inspiration for this was a bunch of teenagers died in their sleep for no discernable reason is neat. What happened? Why did they die and that was it? It inspired the film.

Love the dream angle on this one, great story, great design, good acting. Cheesy music makes me dock it a point! Even in the 80s there was no forgiving cheesy 80s music (good 80s music was another story!) As far as Freddie Kruger going free, all I can say is this must have taken place in Florida! (Duoh! Just kidding! Just teasing!) I have NEVER watched a reaction for this movie, I enjoyed seeing it with you! Haven't seen it since the 80s!

Forget part II, the rest of the sequels ignore it, and it's not exactly good, anyway - they still didn't know what to do with the mythology then. The franchise found its footing in part III and remained that way: not the least bit creepy, but rather funny and inventive. If that's your cup of tea, part III is a classic. Just don't expect horror from the mainline Freddy franchise after part I.
Freddy's New Nightmare from 1994 could be interesting, though. It's not numbered for a reason. It's actually quite hard to explain, but that film is a direct sequel to part I. Uhm, in a way. Depends on your perspective, I guess. It's also a reboot, only it isn't. Damn, it's REALLY hard to explain without giving away anything, but that movie is really, really interesting and actually quite clever. They tried going back to the roots there, get away from the one-liner quipping Freddy and back to a demonic monster. Not a classic, but IMHO a very intriguing entry nonetheless. If you liked this one, definitely give FNN a watch.

You should just skip part 2 and watch part 3. Part 3 is pretty much a sequel to part 1 and the 2nd installment really isn't necessary nor is it that good. Part 3 is a lot of people's favorite of the series. The rest of the sequels just go down hill.
