Fun fact: the flag that most people consider the Confederate flag design is actually not the official flag of the confederacy, it is actually the confederacy's military flag, and on that note Georgia's flag is literally the first official Confederate flag just with its state seal in the corner between the stars.
Fun fact, the Confederate states adopted a flag that had the battle standard flag as part of it in 1863, which remained as part of the further revised flag adopted in 1865 till the dissolution of the Confederate states. So saying the flag that is commonly referred to as the Confederate flag today is not the actual flag is really just a technicality at best.
Fun fact: Slavery was the 8th which was the last reason the union declared war on the confederacy
the recangular flag was also the confederate navy's flag, the square version is the one actually used by the army. but it was flown on the stainless banner and the blood stained banner
UHHHHHHHHHHHHHH OH SHOOT THEY’RE ON TO US
Actually the rectangular one is the navy flag, if it was square it would be the battle standard

Come on, you couldn't even mention that the Oregon flag has a reverse side? That literally just had a beaver on it. And they decided to put the state seal side as the actual front part, and not the one-image symbolic one which gets relegated to being the flag of Oregon that you see in your rear view mirror as you hightail it out of there, gaslighting you into thinking the state flag wasn't actually that bad

For Alaska, it's much more than you think. Sure you can see the Big Dipper elsewhere, but you use the Big Dipper's stars as a guide to locate Polaris (also on the flag) to locate true north. True north representing that Alaska is the northernmost state. And Big Dipper is also known as Ursa Major, Ursa meaning bear. And the bear is a creature associated with Alaska (it also represents strength). The blue background not only represents but the sky, but the alpine forget-me-not as well which is the state flower.
Coincidentally, the orphan who designed it died at age *59* from a heart attack in 1972. Alaska became a state in *1959*

As someone born and raised in South Carolina, I had always thought our flag was kinda boring, but seeing all these other flags, I now know that simplicity is sometimes better. So much better.
I agree! I'm from New Mex and currently living in Atlanta. I noticed most southern states flags are boring, similar, slightly racist and ugly. I had a neighbor that flew the American flag, and SC... I didn't know until I asked and was very surprised and delighted.
The South Carolina flag is amazing. Palmetto + crescent moon is some beautiful symbolism.
@@ferretyluv_technically_ it’s not a moon, or at least it was never intended to be one.
@@Bempes3477 It’s not? TIL. What’s it supposed to be?
@@ferretyluv well that’s a rather complicated question. I’m going to assume that you don’t know the story behind the flag in general.
Long story short, the flag was first designed by the second South Carolina regiment of the Continental Army during the revolution. The original design only consisted of the crescent with both points facing upwards on a blue background (some people also think it said “Liberty” across the bottom, but this is debated), and was made as a battle flag for Fort Sullivan, a fort that was made very hastily with whatever they could find lying around as the British were sending a fleet of 9 warships. As such, the fort was made out of nothing more than mud and palmetto logs. When the British came the tiny fort managed to successfully defend the port of Charleston, as the spongy Palmetto logs simply absorbed the cannonballs instead of splintering like most other woods. The tree has become a symbol for the entirety of SC and you’ll see it on everything around here. While it wasn’t originally on the flag that defended Charleston, it was eventually added to the flag to symbolize the fort.
As for the rest of the flag, the soldiers in the regiment needed something distinct really quickly. The flag is blue because that was the color of their uniforms, so they had a lot of fabric lying around. The crescent shape is based on a piece of metal in the same shape that was sewn onto the soldiers caps. Now there’s actually some historical debate as to what this metal piece represents. The most common theory is that it’s supposed to be reminiscent of a gorget, a piece of armor that officers would wear around their necks. Others believe it had a more symbolic meaning, which classically can have many different meanings mostly involving heraldry. Either way, it’s certainly not a moon, as much as it looks like one. Eventually it was tilted to the left and we got the flag that we have now.
The blue stripes in the Hawaiian flag is actually actually to mimic elements of the Russian flag. Essentially Hawaii didn't want to piss off anybody so they tried to have their flag be a combination of the British flag the American Flag and the Russian flag which were kind of the 3 major players Hawaii had to contend with.
And that why Hawaii is hated by everyone.
Given they're now firmly an American state they should just have Goku charging up a Kamehameha instead.
Fair play honestly

Okay, as a Utah resident (truly a terrible affliction), I would like to give an update on our situation as of April 14 2023.
As of time of writing, 43 days ago, we have chosen a new flag based more on the second design shown in the video, with the white stripe in the middle representing our snowy, mountainous geography. It actually looks great now.
That does not, however, change the fact that every other roast in this video is still completely valid as of today. I fucking hate living here, since being even mildly asthmatic in winter has me breathing heavy and with hellish headaches
If you’re “mildly asthmatic” in the winter, I think it’s time to get tf out of that state.
Honestly I've never seen the state flag of New Mexico before this video. It was neat and simple, unlike pretty much every other flag which tend to be stupidly complex and hard to look at. I'm not a big fan of simplification like that but it was done fairly well in this case, also I really hate the Yellow/Red combo but this is one of the rare cases where it suits the design very nicely. I want the other states to simplify their flags a bit. Not too much, but just enough to the point it's instantly recognizable, and it's straightforward in it's meaning. Even better if it has clever subtlety like the NM flag.
Neither did I till I moved there. Their license plates are yelloy and have the Zia symbol in the middle and I grew to love how simple it was
@@theoriginalshew Sadly, its probably the best part of this state, considering... well, everything.

There's nothing uniquely Canadian about the red maple - there are more red maples in North America than any other native tree species, and a lot of those are south of the border.
At least the red ensign (although crappy flag in other ways) alluded to our national heritage. I could see deriving greater meaning from that. I always thought it to reference the Rockies, which was once at Kansas' border. Before Colorado was organized and while the Kansas territory was in it's infancy, it went to the Rockies. Some old maps still reference this. But as Nebraska and Kansas became more defined, especially as Colorado became a conceptual entity, Kansas lost it's mountains.

A lot of states have blue backgrounds because a lot of them were designed post-Civil War. Having a state flag that was distinct and unique was seen as being disloyal or elevating the state over the union as a whole. A good example of this is Maine. Maine’s previous flag is downright gorgeous, and there’s a movement to move back to it going on currently. They changed their flag because they wanted to reflect loyalty to the US.

The confederacy then adopted the symbol which is why North Carolina has an almost identical flag to texas

Thank you for respecting the flag of the Empire of Ohio. However, I must fact check you funny man, the flag DOES represent something about Ohio. Ohio was the 17th state, and there are 17 stars on the flag, representing every state up to and including Ohio.

Im rather annoyed he pointed out how Ohio was tryin to do somethin different and yet **he didnt even show the second half of the Oregon flag** two flags later, thus ignorin how Oregon also tried to be different with our state flag >.>

The pelican thing is actually an ancient belief in the Mediterranean that pelicans fed their own blood to their young. It's suggested by modern scholars that this was mistaken conflating of various other pelican behaviors because the ancients really weren't for accuracy on the natural world. A pelican, in fact, IS a weird goose.

As an amateur vexillologist, I find this video and the state flags hilarious because even rudimentary study of flags (yeah, yeah, call me a nerd and get it out of your system) would prove how little effort went into making these monstrosities. I honestly doubt half of these took more than an hour.

Actually, Florida’s flag is based on the Cross of Burgundy in reference to the Spanish who first colonized the state. State logo is perplexing, though.
It does scream Confederacy a little bit, but nowhere near as Georgia’s which is literally just the Stars and Bars with its state seal.

one good thing about the Utah flag. In middle school I had an assignment where a large part was drawing all the state flags, and I was excited when I got to Utah because even 6th grade me couldn’t draw the eagle worse than they did

One thing I've noticed about state flags is that the Southern states (whether part of the confederacy or not) generally have better designs than Northern flags. This is apparent when you look at a map of the US with each state filled with its flag. I'm not sure if this is partly because the south likes to shout state's rights at every opportunity or whatever, but there is definitely a trend.
What happens when a state can't take pride in itself? You end up with flyover states and shitholes that can't do anything without daddy federal's help

HEY! CALIFORINA'S FLAG IS AMAZING. (Despite our state having a terrible schooling system, bad homeless problems, too expensive housoing, and other issues.)
Most of them are also shit
Feels like most southern states go for symbolism while most northern states go for what they’re best known for
Here from the future and that "Hawaii war" joke hits a little different on August 2023...
As a South Carolinian who has to see that flag constantly. I agree. It deserves the slow intro. It’s simple and it actually represents all of the trees on the coast too lol
The moon is the more important symbol in my opinion. In American History when a flag has a moon on it, it represents liberty. It works really well with South Carolina’s revolutionary history as it embarked in mass guerilla warfare with the British. It also works for the Civil War given we were the first to secede but let’s just focus on the Revolutionary history
Coming from South Carolina, I was surprised how horrible other state flags are the first time I saw them
Moving to SC from NY in 2 weeks. Flying down tomorrow to get a job and apartment set up. Really excited to live there
As a South Carolinian, I was kinda flattered to hear that our flag was called gorgeous.
we have nothing over north carolina in any capacity, but at least our flag is way better than theirs. That will always be something I brag about to them.
You should have at least brought up the beaver on Oregon's back side, it helps distinguish it a little bit from all the other state seals on a blue background flags there are. Maybe they should just get rid of the entire front side and make the flag a beaver
i know what you mean but I thought for a second you were trying to say that Oregon should use an actual, living beaver as the state flag

I feel like this is more of a "State Seal Review" due to how many of these flags are basically just the state seal on a blue background
If I have a nickel for every time a TH-camr made a video about the US's states's flags that are set in a class environment,
I would have 2 which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice
I'm pretty sure the state-crest-on-blue-background ones are just what the states that haven't put the effort to make an actual flag get by default.
Like, nobody even designed them, they just magically materialize the very instant a new state is created.
It’s the default character on the video game
"Oops! Mississippi's last again!" absolutely killed me. 🤣
Honestly, Georgia should have been behind them
Mississippi got rid of their confederate flag, Georgia, hasn’t
@TheDerpy Kitty Alabama’s is weird, but isn’t the *actual Confederate flag*
I can't wait for the "blue flag with seal" category
You'll be happy to know that Utah's new state flag actually looks even cooler than the one you were rooting for in this video. Rather than an X pattern of blue, white, and red in the background, they opted to do three lines, but with the white middle line being instead shaped like the mountains Utah is best known for, with the tallest peak right in the middle and the beehive placed right in the middle of that.
Hi there! Lived a majority of my childhood in SC. Fun fact, they used a palmetto tree with a canon ball being shot at it (the missing part of the moon) for their flag bc Fort Sumter was made of palmetto trees and sand, which did a great job of absorbing the impacts of the cannon balls fired by the British during the revolutionary war. Giving the British a hard time taking over the port of Charleston.
So i’m not sure where you got your info about the crescent-like shape, but it’s not correct. It’s not a moon. It never was.
The flag that Col. William Moultrie created for the regiment to fly at fort Sullivan originally looked very different. It was still blue, but the palmetto tree wasn’t originally there, and instead on the bottom was the word LIBERTY. Most importantly, the shape in question was most likely upright (though there is some debate over this), with both points equally level. This was specifically placed on the flag in reference to the headgear that the soldiers in the regiment wore, which had a flat leather front pointing upwards with a metal crescent sewn on. Now, while the reason for this metal piece is unknown, the most prominent theory is that it’s referencing a piece of armor called a “gorget” which was a very common piece of armor at the time. There are also a few theories taking a more symbolic stance on it. Technically, in order for it to be a “crescent” it has to be pointing straight up, and these can symbolize various things, most of the time involving heraldry. Eventually, the official design was changed to tilt the shape to what it is today. Either way, it was never intended to be a moon, and your own comment on how it came to be is simply wrong.
It’s certainly an easy mistake to make though.
I’ve been looking for comment. As someone from SC
As a Rhode Islander I was super happy to hear what you had to say about our flag. I was expecting a full-on whoopin but it’s nice to get some recognition every now and then.

Fun fact: the crescent on the South Carolina flag isn’t actually a crescent moon. It’s actually a gorget which is a piece of armor worn around the neck
Well, that’s the theory at least. It could also just be an actual crescent symbolizing something along the lines of heraldry.
Hilariously the reversed crescent moon is also a symbolism of Islamic faith, it has cause some confusion as I’ve heard from a guy who was in the military from SC who had a state flag patch on his gear and the Muslims wanted to know what place that he was from in America that used Islamic religious symbolism
The state flag is based on a military flag made by a soldier whose troops wore crescent moons on their hats.
"as the state troops were clothed in blue, and the fort was garrisoned by the first and second regiments, who wore a silver crescent on the front of their caps; I had a large blue flag made with a crescent in the dexter corner, to be in uniform with the troops"
