As a Texan, I can confirm that the license plate change was easily the biggest tragedy to hit our state since the Galveston hurricane of 1900. I have several past plate designs hung on my wall in defiance.

I remember seeing the space shuttle and texas flag plates growing up, and just watching the boring white nothingness taking over. I completely forgot about all that until this video. A complete tragedy.
Fun fact: Vermont's plate being green because it's "the green mountain state" is actually a huge misconception. It's purely because of how high we all are all of the time.
But seriously, the green around the identifying numbers fades like a bitch and the state replaces them in their own time *OR* (not and) at the car owner's expense. When you take your car in for inspection if it's too faded they'll order you a new set (with a new number!) paid from a settlement fund with the supplier, but I think if you proactively alert the DMV about it you have to pay for replacements yourself.
Agreed, and literally the only thing we have on our plates compared to others are the dmv website and cursive California 😂 hell even Delaware is cooler since it gets less boring colors and the fact that it boasts it self was it’s first state while was have the aforementioned dmv website and like, idk standard license plate colors. there’s probably some better California plates out there but we are prob most bland if we’re talking about the one featured here.

Hey Huggbees, as someone from Virginia I wanted to tell you that I very recently learned that our slogan "Virginia is for lovers" doesn't actually just mean Virginia is for people who love each other. It came from a tourism advertising campaign where they would say Virginia is for history lovers because of Jamestown, Williamsburg and the presidents born here and shit, or Virginia is for beach lovers or mountain lovers, because of how we have all the regions like plains, rolling hills, mountains, and plateaus.

Californian here, I grew up seeing that license plate for my entire life. Imagine my wonder and astonishment the first time I saw another state's license plate (when on the freeway) when I was old enough to distinguish them.
As a kid I just thought red letters on a white background was like a national standard, and that the only out of state plates I saw just happened to be custom.
As a young boy in Texas, I always looked forward to having the spaceship design on my car when I got older. I'll never forgive them for taking that away from me
im a little sad you didn’t mention the old TN license plate because it was just changed this year. it was green mountains under a white sky to signify the smoky mountains with some nice handwritten font saying „tennessee“ above and it used the state‘s parallelogramic shape as the dash between license plate numbers quite cleverly. very elegant yet simple in my opinion.
As someone from Wyoming, the first number on the license plate indicates what county they are registered in. Also, the new Wyoming license plates are extremely disappointing. The bucking horse's name is Steamboat.
It's the same here in Idaho (winner of a 10/10 score from the famous Huggbees). I live in Ada county, the highest populated in the state, and our plates get the honorable "1A" designation. It's funny too because idaho has like 43 tiny counties, I think close to the most of any state.

On the Wyoming plate, the number at the beginning is to distinguish the different counties. They were originally numbered by population however the populations have drastically changed over the last few decades since this was determined but the numbers stay the same.

What’s hilarious is that we (Tennesseans) VOTED for that thing. However, those plates weren’t tested thoroughly, and some outdated traffic cameras cause so much of a glare at night that they can’t read the plate number. They played with the idea of recalling all of our plates, but came to the conclusion that that was a stupid idea lol

As a New Yorker the reason we like our current plate is 1) The old one was just yellow and blue. 2) The other 3 plates were the governors ego projects, and we chose this one to spite him. 2 plates ago we actually basically had a better version of this design. This is a two year old comment, but I wanna expand on this to give everyone full context on why NY has the license plate it does now. There's a bridge connecting suburban Westchester and Rockland counties called the Tappan-Zee Bridge which had fallen into disrepair in the 2010s. This isn't just some random bridge; this was a major part of the most important highway in the state. A new bridge was built to replace it, but then-governor Andrew Cuomo quickly held a vote that renamed the bridge into the Mario Cuomo Bridge after his father. People hated this because the Cuomos have nothing to do with either county and it was blatantly a vanity project. In 2019, the state held a vote to replace the horrible yellow/blue design. There were five options. Four of the options, including the winner, were basically the same bland design with the only difference being how zoomed in it was on the Statue of Liberty's torch. The fifth design? Just a picture of the Mario Cuomo Bridge. It is widely believed that Cuomo was trying to rig the vote by making four designs so similar they'd split the vote while the bridge supporters would be concentrated on a single design. Thankfully, Cuomo did not realize just how much the entire state hated his renaming of the bridge to stroke his ego, so it thankfully came dead last. New Yorkers proved themselves true Americans that year by voting specifically to spite a politician.
At this point it really feels like a teacher, developing a relationship with every state, the Wyoming love-hate, the high hopes in New Mexico and being tired of states always disappointing him.
As someone who lives relatively close to PA, I can safely say that the skill of the average Pennsylvania driver matches the effort put into their license plate.

I'm from Colorado. I actually really like our license plates. They are simple, iconic, highly legible, uncluttered, and show off some stuff about the state without feeling like the design was phoned in or overdone. Also, you'd like our previous design. It looked almost exactly like our current design with the colors swapped.

You should roast each state's biggest tourist attraction. There should be a source somewhere that says how much of each state's tourism goes to what landmarks. They could be natural or manmade, and it would be up to you to decide if those categories can compete with one another. So in other words, you might be comparing the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building to Red Rocks to Disneyworld to Mt. Raineer, etc. Cool things to bring up would be any controversies surrounding them. Maybe any deaths that happened there, or if they were built upon a Native burial ground. Or maybe the state built/founded these places to cover/distract from something nefarious. Maybe find a stupid 5 star review and a horrifying 1 star review for each. But the point I'm getting at here is to roast the likely reasons why people would ever go to these states.

As someone who’s lived in Colorado for the last 15 years I can confidently say I’ve never seen a plate that was black and white. The majority I see are green with some blue for veterans or red for firefighters or rentals
2:20 California's license plates are designed with the same philosophy that sports organizers use when they decide that one team should get to wear their colors and the other should be in a plain, simple white. A lot of people live in California, a lot of people vacation in California, and this makes it easy to tell the two apart at a glance.
It‘s wild how American states can customize their license plates. Over here in Germany, or most of Europe for that matter they all look almost the same. Some countries have a slightly different font or yellow plates and of course other ways to Number/Code but still rather uniform.

North Carolinian here, love that we ate Ohio’s points. Absolutely perfect. Also very glad you picked the First In Flight design for us, it’s objectively the best one of the now three default plate options (the blue grass really makes it). For those curious, the other two options say “first in freedom” and “in god we trust.” I promise you they are much blander than First In Flight simply because the blue grass is missing in those.
I wish they made one with the blue ridge mountains on it as one of the choices. I love the first in flight design but the other choices are just so bland.

Another excellent roast! I haven’t been road tripping in a while, so wasn’t aware of some these current designs. If you want to keep going down the state symbol rabbit hole you could roast state birds (looking to the giant joint section on Cardinals), trees, or flowers. Or something totally different. Fun fact: Vermont's plate being green because it's "the green mountain state" is actually a huge misconception. It's purely because of how high we all are all of the time.

I always wondered if Vermont and New Hampshire's plates were meant to directly contradict eachother in colors the same way their shapes do
But seriously, the green around the identifying numbers fades like a bitch and the state replaces them in their own time *OR* (not and) at the car owner's expense. When you take your car in for inspection if it's too faded they'll order you a new set (with a new number!) paid from a settlement fund with the supplier, but I think if you proactively alert the DMV about it you have to pay for replacements yourself.
As someone who grew up in Texas, thank you for appropriately giving them the business for what they have done. We used to have such great plates.

Agreed, and literally the only thing we have on our plates compared to others are the dmv website and cursive California 😂 hell even Delaware is cooler since it gets less boring colors and the fact that it boasts it self was it’s first state while was have the aforementioned dmv website and like, idk standard license plate colors. there’s probably some better California plates out there but we are prob most bland if we’re talking about the one featured here.
Also, if I’m correct, the dmv thing isn’t exclusive to cali, so we can’t even boast the fact that we have dmvs, literally the only interesting thing on our California plate is our states name but in fancy text.

Hey Huggbees, as someone from Virginia I wanted to tell you that I very recently learned that our slogan "Virginia is for lovers" doesn't actually just mean Virginia is for people who love each other. It came from a tourism advertising campaign where they would say Virginia is for history lovers because of Jamestown, Williamsburg and the presidents born here and shit, or Virginia is for beach lovers or mountain lovers, because of how we have all the regions like plains, rolling hills, mountains, and plateaus.

Californian here, I grew up seeing that license plate for my entire life. Imagine my wonder and astonishment the first time I saw another state's license plate (when on the freeway) when I was old enough to distinguish them.
I live in CA too and seeing plates from other states like Nevada, Arizona, Oregon, and Idaho in a *sea* boring ol' white really makes my day

im a little sad you didn’t mention the old TN license plate because it was just changed this year. it was green mountains under a white sky to signify the smoky mountains with some nice handwritten font saying „tennessee“ above and it used the state‘s parallelogramic shape as the dash between license plate numbers quite cleverly. very elegant yet simple in my opinion.

As someone from Wyoming, the first number on the license plate indicates what county they are registered in. Also, the new Wyoming license plates are extremely disappointing. The bucking horse's name is Steamboat.

It's the same here in Idaho (winner of a 10/10 score from the famous Huggbees). I live in Ada county, the highest populated in the state, and our plates get the honorable "1A" designation. It's funny too because idaho has like 43 tiny counties, I think close to the most of any state.

On the Wyoming plate, the number at the beginning is to distinguish the different counties. They were originally numbered by population however the populations have drastically changed over the last few decades since this was determined but the numbers stay the same.

What’s hilarious is that we (Tennesseans) VOTED for that thing. However, those plates weren’t tested thoroughly, and some outdated traffic cameras cause so much of a glare at night that they can’t read the plate number. They played with the idea of recalling all of our plates, but came to the conclusion that that was a stupid idea lol

As a New Yorker the reason we like our current plate is 1) The old one was just yellow and blue.
2) The other 3 plates were the governors ego projects, and we chose this one to spite him.

This is a two year old comment, but I wanna expand on this to give everyone full context on why NY has the license plate it does now. There's a bridge connecting suburban Westchester and Rockland counties called the Tappan-Zee Bridge which had fallen into disrepair in the 2010s. This isn't just some random bridge; this was a major part of the most important highway in the state. A new bridge was built to replace it, but then-governor Andrew Cuomo quickly held a vote that renamed the bridge into the Mario Cuomo Bridge after his father. People hated this because the Cuomos have nothing to do with either county and it was blatantly a vanity project.
In 2019, the state held a vote to replace the horrible yellow/blue design. There were five options. Four of the options, including the winner, were basically the same bland design with the only difference being how zoomed in it was on the Statue of Liberty's torch. The fifth design? Just a picture of the Mario Cuomo Bridge. It is widely believed that Cuomo was trying to rig the vote by making four designs so similar they'd split the vote while the bridge supporters would be concentrated on a single design.
Thankfully, Cuomo did not realize just how much the entire state hated his renaming of the bridge to stroke his ego, so it thankfully came dead last. New Yorkers proved themselves true Americans that year by voting specifically to spite a politician.
As a Marylander I can confirm that our flag is indeed supposed to be half a regurgitated spaghetti dinner.
At this point it really feels like a teacher, developing a relationship with every state, the Wyoming love-hate, the high hopes in New Mexico and being tired of states always disappointing him.

I'm from Colorado. I actually really like our license plates. They are simple, iconic, highly legible, uncluttered, and show off some stuff about the state without feeling like the design was phoned in or overdone. Also, you'd like our previous design. It looked almost exactly like our current design with the colors swapped.
Also our basic plate is green and white not black and white which I think looks great

You should roast each state's biggest tourist attraction. There should be a source somewhere that says how much of each state's tourism goes to what landmarks. They could be natural or manmade, and it would be up to you to decide if those categories can compete with one another. So in other words, you might be comparing the Grand Canyon to the Empire State Building to Red Rocks to Disneyworld to Mt. Raineer, etc.
Cool things to bring up would be any controversies surrounding them. Maybe any deaths that happened there, or if they were built upon a Native burial ground. Or maybe the state built/founded these places to cover/distract from something nefarious.
Maybe find a stupid 5 star review and a horrifying 1 star review for each.
But the point I'm getting at here is to roast the likely reasons why people would ever go to these states.

As someone who’s lived in Colorado for the last 15 years I can confidently say I’ve never seen a plate that was black and white. The majority I see are green with some blue for veterans or red for firefighters or rentals
2:20 California's license plates are designed with the same philosophy that sports organizers use when they decide that one team should get to wear their colors and the other should be in a plain, simple white. A lot of people live in California, a lot of people vacation in California, and this makes it easy to tell the two apart at a glance.
It‘s wild how American states can customize their license plates. Over here in Germany, or most of Europe for that matter they all look almost the same. Some countries have a slightly different font or yellow plates and of course other ways to Number/Code but still rather uniform.
As a Californian, I am in awe of Wyoming’s beautifully designed license plate.

Problem is OR license plates *are* hard to find these days- most of the state is filled with California or Washington plates instead, and the OR plates in Portland have probably just been stolen

Also very glad you picked the First In Flight design for us, it’s objectively the best one of the now three default plate options (the blue grass really makes it).
For those curious, the other two options say “first in freedom” and “in god we trust.” I promise you they are much blander than First In Flight simply because the blue grass is missing in those.
I wish they made one with the blue ridge mountains on it as one of the choices. I love the first in flight design but the other choices are just so bland.
@@kilroywashere9343 I've seen a few of the "Friends of the Smokies" with a black bear license plates in NC. However, it is more of a specialty plate as it's sold by the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and it also is sold in Tennessee but with a different design.

If you want to keep going down the state symbol rabbit hole you could roast state birds (looking to the giant joint section on Cardinals), trees, or flowers. Or something totally different. Idk maybe like different sections of a department store.

I'm so proud as an Idahoan to get Huggbees approval. One of the only 10/10 plates, and I'm glad because that's the style of plate that's on all 3 of my cars lol. My newest one is a random number but it says "INO4U" so it almost looks like one of those dumb customized plates.
I'm also an Idahoan and was really happy when we got approved too!

I'm from Texas and I'm still pissed at the fact they went from memorable designs that showcased what our state represented to the most basic, boring, dull white license plate. My car currently has this horrendous design so when I see older cars with the previous two I can't help but feel jealous. Never forget what we lost...
