    Yep, legend has it, when these first appeared, they found out that propping the engine cover open, (for cooling), actually made the car faster, due to the improvement in aerodynamics..

    I love that this series put the vehicles front and center. There's no need for flashy production when you have someone that knows their stuff, combined with an incredibly wide array of interesting automobiles. Colin does a great job of explaining the hows and whys of the appraisal process. While I'm no collector, I've been fascinated with cars and motorcycles for more than five decades and am definitely enjoying the information (and of course the autos themselves) being shared here.

    I owned two FJ40s during my HS and college days in the 80s. The 2F straight six is a complete dog unless you remove the smog pump and emission controls and install aftermarket headers. Still an icon and cool vintage 4x4. Really nice example here.

    Its interesting that he says we Europeans dont do the restaurations with the same quality as the Americans. But at the same time our presenters tell us the same about American restaurations. I believe it hardly depends on the workshop and what amount of money the previous owners were willing to pay...

      Having inspected quite a few "restored" historics imported from US to EU, I laughed so hard when I heard this sentence, instantly started to go through comments, looking for some European mates who know our potential :) But to be fair, in this particular case, given how factory Ferraris or Maseratis are put together, I wouldn't benchmark european restoration quality on Italians XD

      That's not what he said. He was talking about general standards (as opposed to quality) being strived for. He noted that European restorations are typically focused on returning vehicles to their original state, making them appear as authentic as they were when new as possible. He contrasted this with American restorers who are often trying to achieve an end result that is better than new, less authentic. As he said, in his view the Europeans typically don't "over restore" cars, they don't make them "better than new". Something that he explained elsewhere in these comments that he both appreciates and strives for in his own restoration work, while acknowledging that there are always exceptions on both sides. To me, the way he defined the typical European standard of restoration is the textbook example of what restoration is all about, whether you are talking about cars or any number of other things. If anything, I felt that it was a compliment to the European restorers rather than a putdown.

      @@pirul Well, like he often says, he can't possibly go into as much detail as he'd like with the time he has to work with here.
      Of course behind it all, you have Hagerty - who wouldn't be doing any of this if it weren't driving more business their way. Sometimes I look at the quantity of content they produce and can't help but wonder just how much I'm helping to pay for it all given the cost of my policy (especially when it comes to those overly flashy Cammisa videos), lol.

    I'm a great Hagerty fan, but this time I have to prove a couple of things in this episode. "The European standards of restoration are not high as ours", really? At Pebble Beach (for example) three quarter of the cars are restored in Europe, same for the "best in show". Second, restoration means bringing the car back at how it was in original not to over-restore it . Third, the pin and bolt on the engine lid latches are original. Anyway, that car, in my opinion is not completely legit.

      I completely agree with you Giancarlo, the quality standards of European restoration are in fact higher - or more focused on originality.

      Generally I think we can agree European restorations are largely focused on originality and function vs. the largely American standard of over-restored cars that get idled on and off of show fields. Note I did not criticize European restorations at all because I, too, restore cars in the classic sense: back to the standards of when they were new and to be driven. This isn't to say some European restos aren't Pebble Beach perfect or some American restos aren't made to be driven. Hard to take a deep dive on certain concepts in 5 min of air time, hope this clears up my intent with the statement. Thanks for watching!

    This reminds me of customized mini trucks and trucks with welded in and shaved roll pans. Absolutely ZERO collision protection compared to bumpers but damn cars/trucks without bumpers look cool when done right.

    In AZ emissions are only required in certain areas. I'm 25 miles south of Tucson and NO testing required.

      I think he explained himself pretty well. By the time he finished with all of his commentary regarding this matter, it struck me as very complimentary of the general European standard of restoration - where restoration is all about returning something to its former, original condition. Not better than new, or "over-restored" as he put it, but as it once originally was.

      @@VirtualGuth Still it doesn't mean it's lower standard of restoration, and that's literally what he said. I understand what he wanted to say, although it's also not true. Not far away from me is a company that does rebuilds and restorations (specialized in Bentleys) and they do a lot of modifications to this cars to allow owners to either just drive in todays traffic or take part in historic rallies (electric fan, forced coolant flow, oil cooling, oil pump modernization, change of electrical system from 6V to 12V etc.). Some of those cars are sported in Peking - Paris Rally or Alpine Rally and many others . And that's sort of industry standard for restoration if car is meant to be driven or used in historic rallies.

    The FJ40s was made until 2001 here in Brazil. Only the initial units were gasoline. From 1962 until the end of production, its poiwertrain was diesel four cylinders engines, Mercedes-Benz (OM-324, OM-314 and OM-364), and the final series Toyota 14B units.

    the one nut on the Abarth rear hood is correct. If you remove it, the hood comes off by moving sideways in the hinges. Also, Carlo Abarth thought he had a cooling problem. He propped the hood open and the cars went around the track 5 mph faster, case closed. The invention of the Whale tail! Abarth!

    Correct me if I’m wrong but Colin said this FJ has a “Stovebolt” 6 but in reality it has a revised “Turbo-Thrift” 6.
    Technically, only the first generation in-line 6 (1929-1936) was called the “Stovebolt”. Toyota did use a version of that engine designated the “B” gasoline engine until about 1948. It was replaced by the Toyota “F” engine which was a revised second generation (1937-1961) Chevy in-line 6 and that engine had the nicknamed “Blue Flame” 6. Toyota used that engine from 1949 until about 1975. It was replaced by the F2 engine, a revised version of the Chevrolet third generation (1962-1988) in-line 6 that was called the “Turbo-Thrift” 6. From what I can see of the engine in this FJ, it appears to be a 3rd Gen Turbo-Thrift 6.

      I was shocked to learn there was any similarity at all. I thought it was just a Toyota industrial post war engine that was dead reliable so they ran with it.

      Actually I didn't say it had a Chevy 6 at all...it's the original 2F Toyota engine. The little factoid box on the screen though did say Toyota copied the "same basic architecture" of the Stovebolt. Which, perhaps arguably lol, they did! Thanks again for watching!

      I'm 6'2" and fairly fit, I had a 1972 Toyota Corolla for a while... I literally couldn't wear shoes to drive it or I couldn't get my legs under the steering wheel. Sounds insane but that's how tight it was. Once driving non-issue, but getting in was interesting!
      I'd love to try one of these and see if the issues are similar. Apparently the modern day 1.4L turbo jobs are a lot of fun, too, and much more accessible.

    From my opinion (i had 3 cinquecentos and an Abarth original one) that's a réplica.....the Abarth parts from the engine looks reproduction ones, that's not an Abarth radial head and the fuel tank its the same as every Fiat 500, .......today you can take a regular Fiat cinquecento and make a very good réplica but....original parts for a expert are easy to identfy......🙃

    FYI, it's pronounced "Aa-bart". Yeah, I know, weird, but that's how it's said, missing the h. Wonder if that kit is still available, or if it fits the 500 Giardiniera ?
    The lid is not kept up for cooling, and certainly the down force line was a jest? They're propped open because they don't close - the modded motor gets in the way.

      “Random guy” here- the one who applied what he saw over a 2 hr in person appraisal to the general market insight from fellow expert and friend who saw it over a FaceTime call for 4 min, yes! All factors are considered to arrive at a final number. Documentation, originality, known history, current condition, mechanical fitness, etc. all factor into my final number. Thanks for watching.

      It's a 1976.Many states are starting to crack down on this stuff, for example, this FJ couldn't be sold for road use at a California collector car auction without smog today. Only mentioned as it does factor into value for some buyers.

    I find it funny when someone mentions european restoration standards being lower...when most botchjobs on european cars originate from...the US xD. However, yeah...euro standard is more focused on running and patina, preservation rather than renovation. It's because of that, that several cars in the US that are from european brands and are in showcondition actually lose value in europe due to the lack of original parts or official reproduction parts.

      For me it's not an original Abarth... just the color alone is a big giveaway since they were never produced in yellow... a lot of other details are wrong/incorrect...

    The FJ was a reversed engineered Jeep, with a copycat Chevy straight six. I'm from the Caribbean where the Japanese market roams. Scrapped many American, Japanese and European cars. Upon my findings, Toyota lost me with their unoriginal 'Legend", thanks to Jeep and GM.
