  • The Best Barn Find Classic Car I've ever discovered. Will it run?
In this episode Jonny Smith pinches himself when he finds what could be the ultimate unicorn classic car, worth up to £300,000. This is a 1959 Aston Martin DB4 that hasn't been started up since 1982 at the earliest, and has been 'abandoned' gathering dust ever since. But why the rotten bumper? Why the tow bar? Who was the famous owner? All is explained in this special episode.

Anybody else get goose pimples when that engine started? I’m not sure how TLBS is going to top this one. Magnificent car and a great history. It would be great to see this Aston returned to its former glory?! Can’t believe it was used to reverse a boat into the water! Mind boggles. 😳🤯

Inspired me to get my, even older, DB MK III going. It's all original and my dad bought it new in 1957, drove it a little and mostly parked it. I fell in love with it, I think before I could walk, and played with it, studied it, and tinkered with it throughout the 70's and 80's. Drove it to high school once, drove it regularly for a while in the mid-80's. It's in the queue for restoration after stripping the trim for painting. No corrosion and all there... Think I'll get started again...

In 1997 l bought my first barn find car, a 62 Alfa Giulietta. The car was in a barn, covered and completely intact. When l watched you two prepare to turn the crank to see if it had seized l got the same knot in my stomach on that chilly fall day 25 years ago when we did this with the Alfa. It turned so l was overjoyed for Johnny and Paddy. I still have it with seven other classics, two of them a Dino 308 GT4 and a 58 Corvette were also barn/garage finds. The Dino turned and the Corvette was seized. Congratulations on bringing the DB4 back to life. Such a beautiful car,!

Incredible story about this DB4, so interesting.... I appreciate the fact not every car is as rare as this one. But how many cars are still hidden in barns (or any other shelter), waiting to see daylight, and be back on the road to enjoy. Even the most common car had a proud first owner, made journey's, made story's, sometimes followed by other owners with additional story's to tell....
Hope for every make, brand, model a few (or better) more examples will survive.
    Nice chap too, Paddy...
Hope you can sort this A. M. out and bring it back to life, preserving it's character.

I was lucky enough to own a DB4 as a young man in the early seventies, a rare interim model just before the 5 was launched, even then I had to have some body work done, the tubular body frame, which the aluminum is crafted around, has padding between the two, this facilitates damp and aluminum corrosion even after just 7/8 years, Restoring the body work on this old girl will take for ever! Wish you all the luck! Great video thanks a lot.

Great job, Paddy, it was great to hear the engine come to life; it sounded very good to me. This DB4 would be a great restoration project for someone who has the available funds. It would be wonderful to see this car with the original color paint and in new condition driving down the road again.

Yet again I've got a new favourite episode, this one is a true legend of a car stashed away and Paddy himself is a legend, was great having a proper motorhead getting stuck right in and wanting to get her running as much as the rest of us. Cheers Jonny and Paddy, great viewing.

An AMAZING find! When I was about 18 I used to LUST after a 1961 DB4 which lived very close by.
When I heard it firing up I'd go to the front garden to see the lovely light metallic blue missile whizz past. (He used to drive quite quickly.)
It ended up in a local garage, for sale at £1400. (This was 1973/4.)
The garage owner was a bit of a "chancer", and had let the tank go down so low there wasn't enough petrol to be lifted by the pump.
(Had it started & I'd driven it, I'd probably have bought it!)
Next day, I was flagged down by a "car mad" neighbour. (He used to run Mk1, then Mk2 Lotus Cortinas, all sorts of fast cars.
He asked if I'd "heard about that Aston for sale?"
When I said yes, I was on my way to test drive it, he said "Don't bother. "$$$$$" had it out last night and put a rod and piston through the block"
At the time, a rebuild (with no damage) was about £4,700.
Had I bought it, it too would have "been my pension".
Great to hear it run - and it didn't sound so bad, did it?
Lastly, my late brother had a German Wire-Haired Pointer.
    She was a lovely, most definitely a one-man dog - and a great gun-dog.
    Thanks for a great video.

my oh my . . . . . .. yes. of course it's a DB so gorgeously aspiring to its next journey. but, oh to my eyes ---- the lathe! @29:00 Paddy makes reference to its necessary partnership. pity, the garage tour didn't gain the priority as i wished. there seems to me -- a very nice bond affixed to Jonny & Paddy in that wonderous space on top of a marvel soon awakened me thinx. many thanx to Paddy for curating a Petrolicious-like audience. the opportunity was mine most assuredly. (a note to Paddy's "GP" life in the pits & elsewhere - super cool life effort!)

    OMG!
    Thr DB4 fired up!
    Never thought that would happen..
And it has water still in the engine.. Absolutely Astonishing.
    What a car.
    ..
Paddy is a very interesting man and popular in the comment section too
Thanks to the LBS team for having a 2nd attempt /day at trying to get the DB4 fired up.
    Didn't sound half bad too.
Bit concerned the DB may not be here in a few years with all that corrosion.
Needs a resto soon as. Needs to be saved for history.
Timestamp; 1830 reminds me of being at the dentist.
    ...
Obviously this is one of the top 5, each episode should stand on its own merits.
So it could the Audi QR turbo, both Lamborghinis (kendal & & Guy Fawkes), reno 5 turbo, M series bmws.
The guy fawkes labmo has to be the best settings /backdrop to a BF.
    ...
Or the kendal lambo with the shady owner...
In this episode Paddy is as much a star as the car!
    ..
    Keep up the good work...

What a great episode! The original Bond Aston was a DB2/4 but they changed it to the current model when they shot Goldfinger. It could have been a DB4 if it was made a couple of years earlier! My dad restored a DB2/4 when I was a kid, I always remember it. It was finished in an amazing metallic gunmetal grey. Awesome

One of your best. I think Paddy and Rufus were the barn find here. What an interesting guy and so good of him to involve us and to put so many hours before the second day. I'm sure there a great many of us watching this thinking of the gold Corgi James Bond DB5 we had as kids. Was Goldfinger the inspiration for the respray? Hope Paddy gets round to restoring the DB4 himself as the outsourcing cost will be substantial. The classic pair also reminded me of the Persuaders with the red Dino and orange DBS also said to have been an inspiration for the DB5 and Ferrari 355 chase in Goldeneye!

Repair and renovation of that superleggera (aluminium on steel tubing) bodywork is possibly the most complex system ever devised!! Good luck guys and a great show.
