Thank you for taking it slow and thoroughly explaining what you did and why. I am new to using a saddle this year and I am a 50 year 6’2” 226 pound guy. Keep it real and have a good season!
Thanks for the great video! I'm using a gear tie at the carabiner around the tree to keep it from slipping. Take it loose before I start repelling down. I'm 58 yrs old and 210 lbs. and don't have any trouble. Keep the faith, Brother!
As a 50 year old man that is 6-4 and 255 that is new to saddle hunting, I probably will not be one sticking. However, your comment about the negativity is spot on. People should do what they want to do and keep their mouth shut about what other people are doing. I did enjoy your demo and it gave me some insight into the method. Happy hunting and stay safe!
Thanks for the best big guy 1 stick video along with your attention to safety and all the minute details! Also thanks for sharing the links for the complete set-up!
Great video. Slow and steady is the fastest way to climb. I am 67, 6"-2" tall and 195lbs.with a bad back so I just add in a few extra safe guards since I don't bounce the way I did when I was younger. I use my line mans belt from the ground up and only remove it when I need to reach for the stick to make my next move or when tethered in at hunting height. I also use a back-up (prussic or auto block on the rope) below my Gri-Gri as an added safety factor. I have recently added a "Yates Shorty Screamer" between my bridge and Gri-Gri. If I fall when the tether/ rappel rope has slack, it may help lessen the shock load. It is best to do what makes you feel safe and comfortable. A few extra minutes used to go up safely is better than having a problem.
Thank you for an excellent video. I got into stick x 4 then built my own hybrid system. One stick and a platform. I am 225 at 6'2" so definitely doable.
Great video. Im 6ft 240lbs and have been saddle hunting a few years and started 1 sticking 2 seasons ago. I have 2 herniated discs and still do it, One thing that may help some is to set your tether to the side of the tree from where your stick is. It make its easier to reach the stick and get into the aider.
Great video! I’m 250lbs and one sticked first time last year. I find it much easier then putting up 4 sticks and platform. I think it is intimidating for first time saddle hunters but once you have one hunting season under your belt With a saddle and sticks and you can swing around the tree and lean, twist naturally. One sticking becomes no sweat and natural progression.
When I saw you rappelling in crocs during the intro I knew you were legit and I could trust what you are saying, that is when I liked the video. Good info man!
I love your attitude! Thank you for sharing this with us. I am really thinking of One Stick Saddle hunting this year, I have never use any type of rope/harness/climbing, you have made this look easy and safe. Once again, thank you for sharing!
Do you think it would be a little less complicated and easier just to put your lineman's belt around the tree tighten it up and then move above the branch with your tether
Great stuff. I personally practice with ALL my equipment year around whether it is my bow, saddle equipment or my late season climbing stand. Good practice makes you more efficient. This also ensures my safety because I am always checking every piece. Is that the Phantom XL you are wearing?
Could get away from metal weight and noise of quick link by using a simple running bowline that takes seconds to tie and untie. I personally prefer to swing off side of tree to get my stick to move it up and to place it on tree. But im not using a platform and top. Just has a regular step. As i prefer a ring of steps over a platform. And putting stick on tree at ground level doesnt count as a move imo. The first move is the first time you take stick off tree and move it up. My favorite method is one sticking and using a lwcg 1.0 hang on stand. More versatile and comfy than a sassle imo. Good luck and stay safe.
Great video!!! I am roughly same size as you and this inspired me to not give up on one sticking. I think the whole key is to take your time and not to rush. As they say, smooth is fast, fast is smooth.
I like your method I climb with a vt and a rope wrench it makes it where you can ascend and descend with no back up. When ascend if you got something already preset you won’t have to worry about sliding your climbing line up as you go but good luck and good huntin
Man I’m about the same size and I was going to build a platform with the muddy pro and the up I currently have a jx3 so it’s going to be a little different but I’m thinking of switching to a regular saddle
Comfortable with the entire process, except the rappelling. I've never done it, though I will be researching more.. great video, and love the positive attitude!
Well you are inspiring me. The first time I seen the one stick method I can see the advantages of it. My hunting buddy thinks I'm crazy but I'm gonna give it a try at 285lbs. What brand is the actual one stick do you use?
Great video for big guys. Saddle hunting for the first time this year and doing my research on climbing and going down rabbit holes. I have to ask. Do you hunt in your crocs? If so that is awesome man. Hope all is well down there, was stationed at k bay 10 years ago. Out now
Well done. I never considered the Wingman as a one stick. I like that big platform. Is there any reason you do not use your lineman's belt for the move to over the limb? I pray that you and your family are safe and out of the way of the fires.
Good video. One thing you might want to try is aiders made from webbing rather than amsteel. I have both. The amsteel seems real nice, but I find I have a lot more problems getting my foot on the amsteel steps (especially in the dark). Note in your video (the 9 minute mark) how the amsteel on the upper steps tends to bend in towards the tree or out towards you rather than staying were you expect it to be.
I am 300 pounds I have tried climbing on muddy stagger steps. I am so SORE…out of climbing shape LOL. My feet are size 16- I am hating those steps. I’m gonna give this a shot
Great video. Thanks for repping the big dogs!! Just getting into saddle hunting. Very similar size and build. What platform is on top of the stick. I feel the struggle with the size 13 boots.
Awesome video, I think larger guys are intimidated by this method. Really impressive that you are doing it in CROCKS! If I may my only feedback would be to tie and overhead on a bight on the brake strand of your safeguard, just as an added bit go redundancy.
Thanks for watching, I normally tie a Schwabisch above the Madrock for the ascent and the hunt. For the rappel I normally attach an autobloc. #crocsforthewin
I decided to go with an aider that is the right length for what I need on subsequent moves after leaving the ground. It seems way too much aider length to have attached to my stick the length needed for me to climb when I push my stick height to the maximum reach when I’m standing on the ground.
Thank you for doing this as you really answered a bunch of the questions I had. I’m wondering if you would recommend this for a 63 year old man who is in decent shape but still overweight. I walk about 3 miles a day and trying to lose the weight but am concerned about the age factor. Thanks again sir and I also liked the comment about us hunters sticking together!!!
I always say my initial move then I do two more. Great video 👍. Little jealous getting to hunt year round. Im kinda on another part of saddle hunting/ 1sticking. Im 5”10 190-195. But I’ve been asked if it’s for younger guys. Im 55 now 56 in August. Season starts in September. Honestly I believe it’s easier on older guys because of less weight and bulk. I really like how ya use the saddle with the dinaglide 😉😉
Just out of curiosity but, is it hard for you to pull down on the arm of your MadRock when Rappelling out of the tree??? I’m right at 240lbs. & for some reason it’s hard to do on my MadRock, it works but I have to pull on it pretty dang hard!!!

That's the great controversy lol. I don't think it's a "move" until you have to pull the stick off the tree and reposition it. I've hunted pretty low from time to time, just depends on the cover.
