He's a Sun Belt or Conference USA coach. That's the way they play football. In the Big Ten, you'd better be able to coach a pro-style offense with a base 4-3 or 3-4 defense. He's coaching in an NFL conference now, not the weak Pac-12 with its 150lb LBs and wacky 72-69 final scores.

Enough of this Clay Helton comparison. Clay inherted good talented players. Lincoln inherited Clay Helton's weak team. During Helton's tenture, we were unable to get commitments, because players knew that they were not going to coached up for the next level; players were very vocal on the topic. SC's problem started years before Lincoln and a lot of the blame is on Pat Haden. Of course, no one at SC is going to say anything negative about Pat because he's SC's golden boy. Firing coaches during the season was the worst thing to do, not fighting for Regie Bush and hring Clay Helton were equally reprehensible. I seen it all from McKay to Lincoln. And, stop acting like SC cannot compete within the BIG10. Why is it that we played the Alabama's and Oklahoma's and won, and come New Year's day, we defeated the BIG10. The is that we had players. When Lincoln came in, he said it was going to take about 5 years. We got spoiled with the Lincoln's success his first year. Now reality has settled in. I'm as frustrarted as anyone. I've stopped watching the games because we are making dumb moves. If you think hiring a new HC is correct, you are missguided, and probably think your microwave is too slow.

USC didn't dominate the Pac-12. They doubled the money they are getting going to the Big 10. Riley's problems are not related to the Big 10 football teams, they are related to Lincoln Riley. He lost 5 of the last 6 games last season playing against Pac 12 teams.
Riley inherited a program at OU and kept it going, but didn't ever build a program himself. And he is no longer a great OC, he has not evolved with time. I honestly think once he got to USC and got that beautiful house, he doesn't really want to coach anymore. He is ready to just live a quiet life with his family. There is no Urban Meyer type of fire in his belly.

Lincoln Riley is one of the three biggest FRAUDS in the college head coaching profession. (The other two are Ryan Day, who is 2-9 in games against teams with anything close to comparable talent, and Dumbf### Fisher, who got paid $75 million to leave Texas A&M so his horrible coaching wouldn't keep dragging that program down.) Riley's teams got worse every year at Oklahoma and have gotten worse every year at USC. The trend line is always pointing down. He should go be a quarterback coach at some NFL team: the one skill he does have is producing good quarterbacks.

this is just easily, verifiably wrong. USC went from 4-8 before Riley to 11-3 with him. Two of those 3 losses were with an injured QB. But count it however you want. They got better after he arrived. The last 2 years have been a disappointment but they still haven't gone 4-8 since he arrived. Has he had more talent than they did in year 21-22? I agree. I'm not a PAC 8, PAC-10, or PAC-12 guy, but I have always hated USC. USC and UCLA's blatant money-grubbing greed, arrogance, and self-entitled hubris (with assists from Oregon and Washington) proved they were "BAD neighbors;" they DESTROYED a once-great conference (that also happened to make perfect sense time-zone wise and geographically speaking). And I DO NOT GIVE the EQUALLY GREEDY, SELFISH, and DIRTY BIG-10 and SEC "passes" either.
It's absolutely insane and ASININE for the BIG-10 to be a coast-to-coast megaconference (and in the same process thereby force the ACC to become a coast-to-coast bloated conference too (because Stanford and Cal -- in search of a peer "upper tier" athletic and academic conference that they USED TO HAVE in the PAC-12 -- were forced to join the ACC rather than be relegated to the Mountain West of some other second-tier conference (no disrespect intended). In fact, it's ALL attributed to selfishness and greed to "keep up with the Joneses" in the race to inhale the most money at the BIG MONEY TV Deal trough. There is a virtual "arms race" between two megaconferences, the SEC and the Big 10.
The SEC expanded on steroids (gobbling up some of the best legacy teams from the old SWC, Big 8, Big XII, etc.) and STILL may have its eyes on poaching several MORE teams from the ACC !!! The Big-10 previously poached Maryland (a charter founding member of the ACC) and Rutgers (Big East) in a greedy desire to expand from the Midwest to the Atlantic Ocean and the NYC TV market ... plus it poached Nebraska from the Big XII. All this occurred after having previously poached Penn State dedcades ago from the rolls of independent schools (which resulted in Penn State no longer able to maintain the great ANNUAL RIVALTY games every season against Pitt and West Virginia, And now the BIG-10 has poached 4 of the "best" West Coast football schools ... with the possibility of adding more eventually. In the process, the traditional Rose Bowl Game pitting the PAC-12 Champion and BIG-10 Champion (except for football playoff years) has been destroyed too. All for $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
And, sadly, USC (back to the beginning) doesn't care ... because they arguably haven't had to "pay the price" for breaking up their former conference. They will make more $$$$$$$ by being an embarrassing non-championship member of the BIG-10 than by being a "big dog" of the PAC-12. MONEY is all they really care about -- certainly NOT the student athletes that will have to interrupt their classes and studies to travel coast-to-coast and across multiple time zones far more often ... and most certainly they do NOT care about the fans.

This is all on the coaching staff and especially Lincoln Riley for being soft and fostering a soft culture. Why are all the pundits trying to spin this like USC can't compete in the Big 10? USC lost to Michigan by 3 points in Michigan with very suspect home cooking calls. USC lost to Minnesota on a last minute 4th and goal stand which USC stopped them and there weren't indisputable video evidence of a TD but the refs gave Minnesota the TD anyway. Later on the Big 10 publicly said they made a mistake on that call but there's no fixing the score at this point. USC lost to the #4 team Penn State at the time by 3 points in OT. USC lost by 1 point to Maryland and still had a chance to win it, but got the field goal blocked. We can sit here and say USC has a record of 3 - 4 but in all honesty, they could have easily been 7 - 0 with the right head coach at the helm. USC was up multiple scores on all the 4 losses but blew it because of poor coaching. So this narrative that's actively being spun by the media that USC can't compete in the Big 10 is nonsense and quite frankly propaganda BS. USC did not get blown out once after 7 games, hence the definition of can't compete is getting blown out. With that said, Lincoln Riley is not a head coach who can build a program from the ground up. He is nothing more than an OC.

So in a more physical conference, what should you do? Build out both lines and change your offensive personnel to more run fits using two tight end personnel and run the ball. And yes, you can pass it from these formations but you have to change your passing game concepts. He has good personnel but not the depth he needs to have. If can’t adapt, then the university needs to look elsewhere. Otherwise, we’re in the same position as with the previous coach at a much higher cost.

@@DownstreamV If they want to say "The Big 10 has more quality opponents and you have to play more consistently..." I will leave it alone. But he literally said "SC has never seen those athletes." It's a dumb thing to say. Also there is some nuance here that is being overlooked by pro pundits and YT commenters alike. SC hasn't been outclassed in any game. They keep losing by one score and have the lead late in the game. A loss is a loss but "these boys are too for them" is a dumb thing to say when they play competitive games against all of them. In fact, SC has repeatedly shot themselves in the foot. By definition, these are games they do have the talent and size to win but keep making stupid penalties, turnovers, and poor clock management. Did they lose? Yes. But they are losing in a way that league isn't too for them. Finally, about those bowl games. It's irritating to see the Big10 fans talk about them like they're the SEC. Look at the game SC played against Bama a few years ago. That's what outclassed looks like. The Big10 is famous for having multiple teams ranked highly all year long and then those same teams make it to the Rose Bowl or the BCS Championship or the CFP and in those cases, they're almost ALWAYS an easy win for a team from some other conference. Including the Pac 12.

I'm an invested fan of USC. Lincoln Riley has been given the opportunity to show his coaching skills, and he's shown that he can't produce a balanced, winning product. He needs to admit that his lack of college football expertise is not helping USC to be a consistently winning team. He needs to go.

So Cal has some of the best High School talent in the country, and it wasn't long ago when USC owned the Big 10. My proof is their record of 24 and 9 in the Rose Bowl, and finally USC has the most money!!!!

USC isn't getting blown out, but its lack of physicality and ability to tackle is a reflection of a head coach who operates like a coordinator. The QB and WRs might be able to get their work in without hitting and tackling in practices, but it sure hurts the readiness for the rest of the team. This has been an issue with Riley's teams for a while now. An ideological failing hits differently from missing on a few recruits or a bad QB from the transfer portal. I tend to believe that Oklahoma can bring in linemen. They just have a lousy one this year. We've seen Oklahoma bring in linemen before. They have had four drafted in the last two years. It makes sense it can be corrected. It isn't always quick on the OL, but still. FSU doesn't have a QB. They misevaluated DJ, and clearly the FR and RS FR aren't ready (and might not ever be). They'll try again when the portal opens after the season.

It's really simple. Riley doesn't understand the concept of complimentary football. Riley's ego is the star of the show, and the rest of the team is sacrificed for offensive production. I've been an OC for 12 years. If I called a game like Riley does, I'd expect our DC to punch me in the face immediately following the game. I wouldn't even be mad, I would have earned it 100%. The three primary jobs of an OC is to score more points than the opponent, to control time of possession and to control field position. Riley focuses on one area, and he's not that great at it.
