Shit. He is in 50 at 5k rpm in first.lol goes you never drove an gt car. When hes in second well over 100mph he hits third in these cars quite a bit. Pay attention. He says the gear hes in sometimes.
What makes this guy so much better than every other TH-cam car guy is that he can out drive every one of them, and he could care less about what anyone thinks. These other guys are putting around L.A. having no idea how to even shift a DSG and they care more about shows and who's seeing them drive down the road. This guy is out there alone just absolutely killing it. He wants to pass cafe bikes that are doing 120. He puts each car through its paces.. He's a great driver and he loves to drive. He does not care what anyone else thinks, he's in it for the experience.
+Johny Piston never want to use that shit... i learned from a friend it's a bad idea when your wifes in the car and a... "friend" whos a girl calls you ;)
I find myself agreeing with this more and more as time goes on. The Pista is something else but I don't think anything else comes close for the an all rounder at the money they are now.
Might just be my favorite one take yet. In this video, you seem much more casual and relaxed, even compared to some of your other one takes. It could be do to the fact that you've had time to get comfortable with the car, that the car is just so good, or that you don't have to worry about holding a conversation with a passenger, but I like it a lot. This longer, more casual form of video is really great when the car itself is so damn cool. Keep it up, man.
Driving a supercar at speed is very easy. Driving some crazy tuner car at speed is much different. There's always some component, some weak link somewhere, that keeps the car from feeling as comfortable at speed.
The correction was spot on! As a scientist myself, I appreciate someone willing to admit they were wrong, in public. It didn't detract anything from the video either, IMO. AND we got some additional cool info about the car.
+Francis Arnaud I don't know exactly what max RPM ferrari sounds like, but I'll take Matt's word for it when he talks about taking it to 8000 in the video.
the redline difference is of a 1000rpms. 8000rpm's for the 488 9000 for the 458. not a huge difference though. the sound is different because of different engine designs.
These are the best car reviews I've seen on You Tube and I've seen a zillion of them including probably every Jay Leno's Garage. This guy doesn't waste your time like some others and he knows how to drive really well. I think I read somewhere yesterday that there's no more smoking tire and that makes me sad. I'd rather have read there's no more something else other than this guy. Thanks for producing videos without fluff. I wish you well in future endeavors.
Matt Farah, I just want to congratulate you on the success of TheSmokingTire channel lately. I've been subscribed since this first kicked off and I'm glad I stuck around. Your content is very enjoyable to watch and I feel it is still not even at its peak yet. Keep up the great work! Also, I do miss you on the /Drive channel!
Dude - you have no apologizes to make, you are driving real cars or real roads under real conditions. I love it, I don't watch all the videos...but ones like this with the Ferrari 488 or any Mustang video and I will be watching. I know you are having fun all the time, thanks so much for doing this!!
I remember an engineer talking about how they alleviated most the of turbo noise in the induction sound to punctuate the engine note. I think they did a fine job!
Gotta understand that theres always going to be people whining and complaining about something. It's 2016 and people are still whining that 911s are liquid cooled. Ok yes, the 488 doesn't sound as good as a 458, but it still sounds pretty damn good and its a better car in just about every other way. Also keep in mind, the 288 GTO and F40 were TT v8s, and those are considered by many to be the best cars to ever be assembled by the firm, so this is by no means sacrilege.
The 288 and F40 had turbos yes but for different purposes. They were for adding hp to small engines for bug power. Not fuel efficiency like the 488 is.
Clayton Cortina There is unfortunately no defeating regulations anymore. Ferrari did it for as long as they could and sadly I see lamborghini eventually going that direction as well.
+Dantheman yep. The damn Euro market and regulations. Well at least the 458 is going to only appreciate in value now. Especially the Speciale and Aperta versions
+MegaSturrup i cried, when i was informed the end of the naturally aspirated 4.5l v8 in the 458 and that they'll implement the new 4.0l biturbo v8 in the new 488gtb. I mean ferrari could have been waiting with that downsizing shit.
Superb video as always, Matt. I love the way these one-takes are so natural feeling, and lacking in bullshit (cinematic bullshit, presentation bullshit, bullshit bullshit etc.). You and Chris Harris are the absolute top two car reviewers.
I swear, I hope Matt Farrah never stops making these videos. These are so much more informative and more fun to watch than pretty much any other reviewer out there.
Great video and review! I loved that you really drove the car and put it through its paces. I've once driven the Ferrari California in Italy and was really impressed with the performance. But the 488 is a lot faster. I can only imagine the thrill of driving that car. Must be exhilarating!
Magnificent video Matt.. of a Magnificent car... on some fricking amazing roads! The roads are so amazing I had to get them into a Sim Racing game. The game is Assetto Corsa... The track is called L.A. Canyons :) A big big thank you for showing me these roads Matt!
That motorcyclist was a d*ck for not letting him by on the two lane. Great vid. Thorough review and explanation of almost every aspect of the car. Thanks, thumbs up and subscribed.
I absolutely love this guys critque, this is my favourite car its just so useable and its looks are so much better that the 458 which is a great looking car itself, those intercooler inlets are so gorgeous and that power band just wow.
Great review! Love the passion and excitement while you were driving. I laughed myself as I watched you laugh when you hit the throttle. I hope to one day get the chance to drive one myself. Looks like an insane amount of fun! Cheers!
This seems like one of those amazing cars that goes so fast that you go into a corner thinking holy shit I'm going too fast but then brakes easily slow you down and the turn in is beautiful and the rush of excitement you get from making the turn not just okay but beautifully is overwhelming. I'm usually an American car guy but this thing looks awesome and I agree it seems way under priced.
Ah yes a production car with a 3L V10 that revs to a casual 19,000 RPM. I'm sure that won't have a warranty longer than 15 hours as the engines that made that great sound lasted a race weekend and that was it. There's also the fact that Ferrari has never used a V10 in their road cars and only made a V10 in their Formula 1 cars because of the regulations in Formula 1 at the time. With the way emissions standards are now you will never see another new naturally aspirated and non-hybrid Ferrari ever again. It's sad, but it's the only reality.
The Ferrari FXX with its V12 sounded very similar to a V10 F1 car, even though it's engine was not able to rev 18,000rpm. I guess all Ferraris can't sound exactly the same for model variation. Most people who can actually afford a Ferrari probably do not want an excessively loud exhaust sound anyway.
Variety makes me a fan . Hadn't thought of this car in a while and here Matt's taking us for a ride. Sit back, push the troubles away, it's gonna be a good day tater
thanks to the owner for letting you drive their car. What a beauty. I like watching your videos along with Chris Harris' because you see the racing potential versus street enjoyment. very different. enjoyed. thx
I had the pleasure of driving a 2017 488 gtb in Nero Daytona metallic and yes she is imazing to drive. She's coming home soon and will be sitting next to my 1199S panagali . Can't wait, thanks for the vid.
Keys to flying under the radar is knowing your environment, knowing the type of people that will drive the same road, and looking ahead as far as you can. Sometimes on coming traffic signal what's ahead. If you see a biker tap their helmet slow down.
I guess I'm just paranoid about cops on backroads from bad luck episodes several years back. I normally don't drive hard unless there's no one else on the road and I can physically see that there's not a cop sitting around a corner or something. Maybe once I get away from a cdl career I won't be as paranoid.
You're lucky Matt. I got to sit in one back in October and fell in love. Usually I can write off exotics as unobtainable, but the 488 is a car I HAVE to drive at some point.
Great stuff. I also love what they've done with the engine settings, not having full performance in every gear but getting it gradually as you shift up. They say that makes it feel like a N/A engine.
I absolutely love the small moment of tranquility before it comes on cam during launch, it's like "dump, 0.23 seconds of normal acceleration, and then LUDICROUS SPEED ENGAGE!!!!!!" and it looks like it is positively thrilling.
Also let us admit that the 488 does a quarter mile in 10.9 and from launch you accelerated unabashedly for like 9 seconds. Were you doing something near the neighborhood of 13 miles an hour in under 10 seconds? That shit looked so damn fun.
Hey, we just bought the 488 gtb in Australia, comes in march 2018. loved the video and literally can not wait to get it. The people who talk about picking the 458 over the 488 have no idea how good this car is... top video mate, sub'd!
I love the 488 so much!! It's such a gorgeous car. Oh by the way I'm pretty happy to see the CT app ad in the beginning of the video!! I've been in CT for about 2 years now :)
The one downside to having such a crazy capable car is that your never get to see it's full potential on the road. Even with Matt driving it relatively hard the car sounds like it's working at like 30% of it's capacity. Is it better to drive a slower car fast, or drive a fast car slow?
+DCassidy42 How is that a downside? You're a fucking idiot if you're seeing the full potential of a Miata on a public road, so how is a Ferrari any different?
+koopatroopa187 Taking a car to it's limits is inherently satisfying and kind of the intention of having a sports car, no?. Not being able to do that kind of defeats the purpose of having something with such high limits. It's like owning a ford raptor and the most action it will see is a pothole. If you aren't using something to within 60% of it's potential what's the point? The Ferrari is amazing don't get me wrong, but you really need to get on a track to truly appreciate the car.
Matt, I feel the same way about the 458 Spider; I've driven several of them, every time an event. The buttons on the steering wheel at first seems like madness, but once you get your head around it and start to drive FAST, it becomes so intuitive that other cars just pale by comparison. Simply the best car ever built that sells under $1m.
I just don't understand why he doesn't pass the slow moving cars on the left lane. I mean, he's already breaking the law by going over the speed limit. What is he afraid of?
+Swagg S There's no proof that he's speeding. The speedometer is never clearly visible. Passing over the double-yellow would literally be filming incriminating evidence of himself. Also, a dick move.
+canonphoto it's whatever the jealousy would by insane and all he could do was block Matt, but more importantly he wanted to piss of a Ferrari owner but all he ended up doing was stopping the crazy cool biker from chasing Matt so he kinda fucked over his own team
Wow awesome car! Good on you Matt for keeping a cool head on the road. No one cuts you slack when you're driving a prancing horse. Nowadays a lot of cars out pace some bikes and everyone's got to keep a cool head so we all can play and go home for dinner when we're done.
Matt how does it compare to the 458 Italia according to you? I've driven one and to me it was the most perfect car ever. Can't believe this beats it. :P
The feature with holding the downshift pedal is really smart so that you can just go into the corners without worrying about timing the shifts. Then you notice that the pedals arent even fixed to the steering wheel and then do not follow as you are turning. The shifting sound reminds me of the Alpha 4c shifts which is really nice. Otherwise this is like a mini laferrari, nice review as always!
TheSmokingTire Exactly thats why i thought it would have been better with fixed paddels for just that specifik feature (holding down the paddle to auto downshift without timing). Maybe it dons't really matter that much because you always know where you have them (even you you are turning the wheel multiple rounds) and the paddels them self are pretty huge, but what do you think do you prefer them fixed to the wheel or on the column?
+U2 Guitar Tutorials most force-inducted engines doesn't sound as good as a naturally aspirated ones, but a little tweak on the exhaust system would solve the problem just fine. take GTR for instance, V6 turbo, powerful & efficient, sounds great when paired with the right aftermarket exhaust and tuned properly.
you got a really nice car...dream car I would drive it day and night and then some...I love driving although I drive a $10,000 4x4 ,you take what you can afford same old story..all these Ferraris ,McLarens and Porsche on youtube is great to see. Won't see one in outback regional Australia where I live ,I am grateful I can see real owners driving these fking awesome cars on youtube...Love it...you guys are fking awesome..
Great vid, the enthusiasm is infectious. The white Merc and the bikers: a demo of why you don’t want a *red* Ferrari - envy, the national sport of the USA. Spec your Ferrari in blue, grey, silver or green - and enjoy a hassle-free life 🥳
Hey Matt, I'm a relatively new subscriber. Just want to say hi and that I love your videos! i watch tons of others videos too but your presentation is excellent! You seem to be a really nice down to earth guy who is also an extreme car enthusiast like myself. Be well, and keep these videos going. cheers mate! Robert
+John B •Non instant power response •Cost of installation •Noise doesn't appeal to me •Unreliability with high boost or after 100k miles of driving •Sudden surge of power vs linear power I think I have perfectly legitimate points.

Shit. He is in 50 at 5k rpm in first.lol goes you never drove an gt car. When hes in second well over 100mph he hits third in these cars quite a bit. Pay attention. He says the gear hes in sometimes.
I always obey the speed limits in weekend country driving with a 911 or S4. I try to keep it under 3 times the limit.

+Francis Arnaud I don't know exactly what max RPM ferrari sounds like, but I'll take Matt's word for it when he talks about taking it to 8000 in the video.
That's because of the turbo chargers. They take some of the noise away, as well as not revving as high
the redline difference is of a 1000rpms. 8000rpm's for the 488 9000 for the 458. not a huge difference though. the sound is different because of different engine designs.

This is a nice looking Ferrari, but I would have liked it more if it had a naturally aspirated V10 that sounds like the old Formula One cars.
Agreed
Ah yes a production car with a 3L V10 that revs to a casual 19,000 RPM.
I'm sure that won't have a warranty longer than 15 hours as the engines that made that great sound lasted a race weekend and that was it.
There's also the fact that Ferrari has never used a V10 in their road cars and only made a V10 in their Formula 1 cars because of the regulations in Formula 1 at the time.
With the way emissions standards are now you will never see another new naturally aspirated and non-hybrid Ferrari ever again.

Also let us admit that the 488 does a quarter mile in 10.9 and from launch you accelerated unabashedly for like 9 seconds. Were you doing something near the neighborhood of 13 miles an hour in under 10 seconds? That shit looked so damn fun.
+Riley Hughes car and driver recorded a 10.5 in this very car ;)
+TheSmokingTire legendary!!! hahaha that is incredibly cool, thanks for the data
More one takes on Hyper cars please! Also I know you may be trying, but could you get an Agera R or some koenigsegg, Please.
YAAAAS! Great one take. Please keep cranking these out, Matt.
$12k paintjob and here I am never owning a CAR worth as much. :(
You don't even believe you'll ever have a car worth more than $12k?
Joey Arthur Zooberry I have low expectations.
+CJ DASHCAM you can do much much better. Why the fuck not
Hey, we just bought the 488 gtb in Australia, comes in march 2018. loved the video and literally can not wait to get it. The people who talk about picking the 458 over the 488 have no idea how good this car is... top video mate, sub'd!
How does it compare to the supercharged Huracan?
+Themayseffect I was thinking the same thing.
I love the 488 so much!! It's such a gorgeous car. Oh by the way I'm pretty happy to see the CT app ad in the beginning of the video!! I've been in CT for about 2 years now :)
Btw this is a car on my list of I NEED to own it one day!! Or at least a 458 :)
How tall is Matt?
+Obi-Based 6'3"
+TheSmokingTire what's this like compared to a turbo s? I mean this looks a million times better but what about performance? what do you think?
+master cobra i think a 488 gtb is a lot faster after 60 mph. 0-60 the porsche turbo s is almost unbeattable
6"4
+kevin cck 488 gtb has 80 hp more
Thumbs up for the honesty cut in clip.
The one downside to having such a crazy capable car is that your never get to see it's full potential on the road. Even with Matt driving it relatively hard the car sounds like it's working at like 30% of it's capacity. Is it better to drive a slower car fast, or drive a fast car slow?
exactly! but I guess it's the acceleration
Only poor people believe this
+jlopez1017d it's not difficult to afford a 400+HP sports car theses days.
OVERTAKEN.......... One Take first if i'm not mistaken !!!!!!! Well done Mr Motorcycle>>>
He Knows what the double yellows are there for
I'll give you my channel for that car
Are you the guy who used to make Clash of Clans videos
@@Panzer_Runner Lol that’s what I was wondering
Matt, I feel the same way about the 458 Spider; I've driven several of them, every time an event.
The buttons on the steering wheel at first seems like madness, but once you get your head around it and start to drive FAST, it becomes so intuitive that other cars just pale by comparison. Simply the best car ever built that sells under $1m.
I just don't understand why he doesn't pass the slow moving cars on the left lane. I mean, he's already breaking the law by going over the speed limit. What is he afraid of?
Good point.
+Swagg S There's no proof that he's speeding. The speedometer is never clearly visible. Passing over the double-yellow would literally be filming incriminating evidence of himself. Also, a dick move.
+Colin Rose that bike blocking off that left double lane was sure a dick move!
+canonphoto it's whatever the jealousy would by insane and all he could do was block Matt, but more importantly he wanted to piss of a Ferrari owner but all he ended up doing was stopping the crazy cool biker from chasing Matt so he kinda fucked over his own team
That douche in the left lane is a typical clover
Wow awesome car! Good on you Matt for keeping a cool head on the road. No one cuts you slack when you're driving a prancing horse. Nowadays a lot of cars out pace some bikes and everyone's got to keep a cool head so we all can play and go home for dinner when we're done.
bikers ruining everything like always
I have to say Mr. Matt I love your videos. You are such a delight to watch. Keep up the good work!
Matt how does it compare to the 458 Italia according to you? I've driven one and to me it was the most perfect car ever. Can't believe this beats it. :P
The 458 was perfect when I drove it. This is better.
+Max Power What?
+Max Power It says 458 Italia in his comment? Besides, you don't need to call it by it's full name, everyone knows what a 458 is.
+Max Power You're such a tool
+Max Power "People from Phoenix are called Phoenicians."
No Ferrari has ever had wheel-mounted paddles. They have always been on the column. Lambo and Aston too.
Amazing car, but doesn't sound as great as the 458. Much more muted.
Can't argue with performance though.
+Alvin Cornelius
But neither the 488 or GTR will sound as good as the 458.
bighands69 couldn't agree more. I saw one in person back in singapore, hearing it start up, cold, gave me the best eargasm I've ever had
Huh, you like cars too? Sweet
awesome video... so glad Matt is getting support to drive the hell out of cool cars.
matt, what car stayed with you the most after all these one takes?
you got a really nice car...dream car I would drive it day and night and then some...I love driving although I drive a $10,000 4x4 ,you take what you can afford same old story..all these Ferraris ,McLarens and Porsche on youtube is great to see. Won't see one in outback regional Australia where I live ,I am grateful I can see real owners driving these fking awesome cars on youtube...Love it...you guys are fking awesome..
When I win the lottery of 50 million it is mine
Can I have one as well when you win? :D
MrBasinator sure
+Tyler Cochran Exactly haha. Thanks
Why the hell would you need 50 million? With 50 million, you could buy the holy trinity, a Koenigsegg, and a Chiron.
Hey, it’s two years later...did you win the lottery yet?
Great vid, the enthusiasm is infectious.

How was the air conditioning?
Beautiful car. Good one take Matt, loved the run down. Haven't seen a ton on the 488 yet.
Funny, they should issue those same licenses to Mustang owners who like to attend Cars and Coffee :D
Refreshing to see someone giving a car a full road workout without talking about where the radio controls are. Great review.
Not sure, but I think I got the impression you liked that car.
Robert
I need my clutch with da gear stick. Paddle shifters are bs to me...
Edgy...
You wouldn't want a stick in this..
+Heel Toe they got lambo& porshe in stick
+Heel Toe why it be bad ass so it's slower ok it's not a drag car. You would just have to GASP! Drive the car I know crazy
+Kartel #1Fan You haven't been able to get a Lamborghini with a stick for years now.
All this needs is the Novitec exhaust and it's perfect. This engine sounds amazing with those pipes installed...
Having an N/A V8 myself I despise turbos, but would buy this any day over a 458. Why?
Torque.
+John B
•Non instant power response
•Cost of installation
•Noise doesn't appeal to me
•Unreliability with high boost or after 100k miles of driving
•Sudden surge of power vs linear power
I think I have perfectly legitimate points.
+Unbearable Pain •Cost of installation
u mean reliability? if you didn't mean that I say it.
Turbo's go to shit quick
+Rover Waters exactly my point. Unreliable
+John B and is that TDI running 662hp? i doubt it.
John B So close
I loved Matt's Public Service Announcement on the sticker price.
