  • This is my version of Contrast paints. I’m not claiming this is the formula, I just wanted to play around and see if I could mimic it.

No matter how much money you spend on this hobby, remember it's always cheaper than therapy.

Good video. Another bonus of making your own is that those components can be used in other ways. Ink over zenithal highlight, flow aid to make interesting blending effects, matte medium and ink to make brilliant custom colors or with pigments to make your own paints or to extend or change the reflective properties of a paint.

Great post. I also like to make my own/vs blindly purchasing magic paint 😆. Good points

@9:35 Concerning primers: You can get good flow on almost any surface if you run over it with a gloss varnish first. Then these heavy ink washes really sink into the recesses.

If you buy primary colors ink you will have a big range of color for cheaper + a good brown and B&W and there you go. And if you airbrush you can use the ink also.

Make sure you use acrylic ink and not alcohol ink =)

water is one way, another way you may want to consider adjusting the consistency is with a suffoctant (ie. dishsoap or airbrush flow improver). What it does is break down the water's surface tension properties (which makes the fluid flow towards the crevices). The flow part you're solving for, is commonly addressed with flow improver. :)

I literally show flow aid being used in the video.

Good content, bad price breakdown... Yes, it's slightly more expensive up front. But the cost of the inks and official contrasts cancel out color for color. So we're talking an extra $25 for medium and flow aid. By the time you need to buy a second batch of *any single* supply for the homemade, you'll have easily spent more than $25 on extra pots of official contrast already. Long term we're talking about hundreds of dollars saved, and that's not even counting all of the other overpriced GW products that you can replace with these materials.

and not counting using the flow aid to dilute the gw paint (exemple) to make your own airbrush paint (because they sell the diluted airbrush line the same price for the same amount as the base paint)

What's the difference to a Wash

Washes are good, but stuff like this is a bit more staining in a good way. For example put a rich burnt sienna over white might give a fantastic fur or leather effect.
Contrast style paint is fantastic for a simple one and done solution.
Spray white and apply for a nice effect.
It's also a good as you can thin further to make a wash.
The transparency is cool as you can apply over metallic silver or gold for candied metal.

I'd say contrast paint is like a wash but without the water, making a thicker paint. See Les Bursley's wash recipe!
