VR Sculpted and 3D Printed Climbing Holds Pt. 2 // Google Blocks and Fusion 360 Tutorial

  • After a year of waiting, I finally got to test my next iteration of 3D printed climbing holds. By using Rigid.ink's Carbonyte* filament, I was able to harness the hardness and texture of carbon fiber combined with the durability of Nylon 12.
    *No longer available. Now I recommend QIDI PA12 Nylon-CF Filament : amzn.to/3OLiZOz
    Download the STL files for free at MyMiniFactory : bit.ly/ClimbingHolds

    I’ve had problems printing nylon as well. The solution for me was to print a PET layer on the intire bed. PET sticks really well to tape, PEI etc. I printed the sheet at a 0.2 mm layer height. Then give the nylon parts a z offset equal to the thickness of the sheet. Just print directly on top of it!

      ANY sanding without breathing apparatus/protection is bad but even a tablespoon of something with minute particles, like baking soda, can put you in hospital with pneumonia.
      Sanding and breathing dangers are everywhere!

    You could make a wide washer-shape hollow space mid print, pause the print, put the wide washer in it and continue the print. This way the forces really distribute and you can tighten the bolt even more.

    This is sweet! I was wondering how 3d printing holds would work out. I've found that adding a grid of dimples to the bottom of my prints allow for a much larger surface area to be printed without warping. The heated bed helps for sure, too though.I would have thought just removing the bottom layers like you did would have had the same effect 🤷🏻‍♂️. Thanks for the video. I know what filament I'll buy to print holds!

    I've dabbled in 3d printing climbing holds and done a little bit of testing myself. After due testing I have deemed everything I've printed with FDM unsafe for practical use.
    The reason being is that the failure mode of typical filament prints with PLA, ABS and PETG tend to create sharp shards that are fairly dangerous if they were to hit someone in the eye. In particular thanks to infill patterns in the event a hold loses integrity it can shatter quite explosively.
    And yes, I know both the typical PU and PS resin holds in gyms can break, but they tend to do so in much fewer fragments and in the case of PU the failures are typically quite ductile.
    I have however made some neat rubbery screw on jibs out of TPU which are quite fun and I think that FDM is a great way to make conformal molds to save on resin pours but my recommendation is to not climb on FDM handholds.

    I have all your answers. I don't know how, but on your first video, when you tested your first print, there were "Wet Stone" Pinches in black on the climbing wall. I made those holds, that is the only casting of that set I ever made and so I don't know how you have them. The coincidence here is that you just so happened to test your hold next to the person who had made the first successful printed hold 4 years ago. You don't print the hold and use it, you print the hold in sandstone, mold it in silicone and climb on a polyurethane casting with texture.

    What was the material cost of the main hold you made? I'm curious about the cost effectiveness of 3D printing versus mold making/resin, buying commercial.

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      With this material cost was probably around $10, so not incredibly cost effective, but it may enable some unique designs that can't be easily cast

  • @JogBird
    @JogBird 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    it makes way more sense to cast stuff like this

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      In a lot of ways, yes. Although unlike Polyurethane normally used for holds, this material can be recycled and reused. It also allows for more customization and potentially crazy shapes that can't be cast by traditional means. But really, this is just an early experiment/proof of concept :)

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I can't remember exact numbers, but this costs around the same or maybe a bit more. So realistically it's better for very customized or otherwise difficult to shape holds... fun as a proof of concept though. That said, using these to then make a mold from might make more sense price-wise

    Does the carbon fiber actually protrude from the hold, or is it encased in plastic? I would be worried about people getting carbon fiber splinters if these were used for hand holds. Carbon fiber splinters are the worst.

    • @make.anything
      @make.anything  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's no chance of splinters.. I guess the fibers are just extremely short or even pulverized.

    • @andyb2339
      @andyb2339 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's good there's no splinters. I'm dubious about where the strength is coming from then though. Is it stronger than solid nylon? I wonder how long the fibers are. I've always been under the impression that those tiny fibers are worse than asbestos.
