cnet.co/10z66uD Yes it's electric and yes it has a Tesla power train, but the limited range of the 2012 Toyota RAV4 EV plus the slow charge times make this car a confusing mess.
+Leo the Weirdo Then an EV is not for me, my favorite shopping mall is 35 miles away and my office is about 41 miles away. I'll stick with my Lexus CT Hybrid.
35 miles should be no problem. This Rav4 EV has over 100 miles of range, and most new ones now have close to twice that range (Chevy Bolt, second-gen Nissan Leaf, etc) for considerably less money.
3:04 "That's where you're gonna find out where the nearest charging stations are..............if the damn thing would ever work which it won't"! There's one good reason to get the regular RAV4, the charging map in the EV doesn't even work.
Cooley, love the review as always, but "gas stations" make sense as there's about 50 things they're good for other than getting gas(snacks, drinks, smokes, bathrooms, air, water, car wash, etc.); still a very relevant thing to put into the Nav, and I'm not sure it's worth the effort to go in and make the distinction on this model of "service station" or "convenience store" just to satisfy the semantics of the vehicle's powertrain.
CARB ZEV mandate. It says that certain automakers must sell a certain number of zero emissions vehicles in the state of California if they want to continue selling any vehicles in the state. It's the reason for cars like the Honda Fit EV, Fiat 500e, and Ford Focus Electric.
Great car, but for the money, 70 miles is not a lot of range. My used Nissan Leaf can seat 5 adults, and still do 60 miles per charge. The price I paid for the Leaf was about 7,000 dollars. I feel I got quit a bit of car for the money.
A normal RAV 4 is about $30,000 so if for just $10,000 more you get an electric version and you get to save from all that gas, I think that's a pretty good deal
Didn't mention the unlimited mileage lease with no money down! Coupled with the abundance of free EV charging stations. this is the cheapest high tech car you can get. Most owners get 135-145 miles out of an extended range charge.
I think the price is to high but for people with the money it's a great buy for around town driving. Not my cup of tea though. I want an EV with a battery range of over 300 miles or 400 miles in models coming out in 3-5 years.
There's no point to complain about this car, unless you live in California. The rest of the 49 states won't get this one. The best PHEV SUV in my opinion is the 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander Plug-in Hybrid, with more than 500 miles of range.
internal combustion engines pretty much platoed. electric engines/batteries are just starting. Model S is already the best car you can buy right now and it's the first "real" electric car.
A few "demo" models of this (back in 2011) had the Tesla charger connection! Would have been nice to keep this, but, I imagine Toyota didn't want to pay Tesla licensing fees, especially since this is a "compliance" vehicle. And I'm sure the Rav4 EV Toyota/Tesla combo (Tesla's drivetrain) has something to do with Tesla's purchase of Toyota's NUMMI plant, which, was used for years for GM/Toyota joint vehicles (previously owned by both, GM defaulted it to Toyota when they went bankrupt).
These EV RAV4s seem to be just that 'product of a shotgun wedding'. Is there going to be more of these made? Now with oil production going strong in the U.S.and cheaper gas, is there even a demand for this EV RAV4? I am commenting when gas is below $1.95 for reg unleaded and I am wondering how long it will last. If gas prices double in the next four years, then more people may demand these electric vehicles. Until then, California is going to be alone in this market.
This car turned out to be a SOUR LEMON and Toyota has not stood behind it even with an extended warranty. I own one and it has been in the shop for 7 to 8 weeks four times. on the forth time the same parts that were reinstalled went bad. Now Toyota refuses to pay to fix it, even though the car is still under the mileage and the date of expiration of the extended warranty. Terrible service from Toyota Corporate !
I doubt your solar panels are giving 100% solar to your car/home. If the electric company is still sending you a bill, then that means you are running about 50% solar and 50% fossil fuel (whatever the utility is burning) .
2:00 on climate control...he gets all "I don't want settings, let the car figure it out"...well, he obviously does not live in a climate where you use A/C 9 months of the year...this feature is great...if you're going on a short trip and can't stand the heat, turn it on "Normal", if long trip, want to extend range, doesn't have to be chilly in the car use "Eco-Hi", otherwise use "Eco-Lo"...makes total sense to me, not gimmick, a great feature!! +General negativity...he's getting old & cranky :P
i like how fast this guy talks. doesnt waste my time.
Ikr!
This guy is a GREAT speaker. I wish all of my teachers were like him.
it looks like they do not want this car to sell.
Buy an EV if pretty much everything you need is within 20-30 miles of you.
+Leo the Weirdo Then an EV is not for me, my favorite shopping mall is 35 miles away and my office is about 41 miles away. I'll stick with my Lexus CT Hybrid.

i would get the EV for the fun of it, thats just too much novelty "oh i would map myself to a charging station but the damn car broken"
One of electric cars that doesn't look ugly and futuristic

There are a couple of these for sale in 2023. Wonder how scare parts are.
What's up with that BMW 2002 in the background? I like!
'You'll forget you own it!" I LOL'd. You're the best Cooley!
Can’t wait for the launch
i just had mine battery replaced after 12 years and now i have 200 miles range. this car is a legend
Thanks for the review and upload. Love you Cooley.
are there any electric vehicles that actually look or feel like a car and not an appliance?
There should be NO others besides Cooley. Let him review everything, you'll always get the most informative and straight forward analysis from him.
Are you talking about CNET only?
Why is the license plate showing
best rav4 ever , when does the 4x4 version come out?
You can, it's just sold in Cali because the Rav4 EV is half Tesla and half Toyota. It makes sense from a service point of view.
thanks to the "likes bar", I can always tell if Cooley is reviewing before the video even loads.
First time Coolly is having fun driving a Rav4
What does he mean it was mandated by California? Did California make Toyota produce an electric RAV4?
CARB ZEV mandate. It says that certain automakers must sell a certain number of zero emissions vehicles in the state of California if they want to continue selling any vehicles in the state. It's the reason for cars like the Honda Fit EV, Fiat 500e, and Ford Focus Electric.

I have a 2011 rav4 and seeing what is essentially a 3rd gen rav4 with a digital dash, a backup camera, and a screen is really weird to me.
A consumer in Connecticut demands for this car!
LOL Cooley just made the tires squeal! I love him
It would have been a great electric crossover if they improved the exterior body
That interior (Tech wise) is like Honda/GM mix
Review the red beamer!!
Cooley loves his torque

The big problem with EV that nobody talks about is the battery life span. They die in about 5 to 8 years and cost about 10k to replace.
no...they last a minimum of 10 years by state law, many of them much longer. And they dont doe - they just reduce range.
I think that they forget to put the comma when he was saying the charge times!!!!!!
Jump forward to 2018, I can get a similarly priced Tesla Model X with better range and supercharger network.
Jackson Bangs yeah but this vehicle is also as low as $10k now
and no Tesla X for 50K lol...properly configured 70K and up. Also no more 10K trax credits
10 years later the Toyota bZ4X has 3x the range and costs 36% less when adjusted for inflation.
Didn't mention the unlimited mileage lease with no money down! Coupled with the abundance of free EV charging stations. this is the cheapest high tech car you can get. Most owners get 135-145 miles out of an extended range charge.
+HarleyTruck Nissan Leaf is better and tens of thousands of dollars cheaper.

im1greatman almost 5 years & still no 400 miles yet.

I think it's time to corner the public charging market at your local parking lot?

Cooley is THE BEST!
Too bad Toyota didn't fit it with CCS charging.
and tesla got their batteries from japan, that's funny ~
It's a loop. :)
rav4 ev 97-03 distance 160 km, rav4 ev 2012 distance 160 km. Advance)
top speed 85? wtf?
The real question is; why didn't they just take the plug-in Prius and make it full electric, just to comply with the laws.
In this day and age- who DOESN'T have an ad blocker installed?
Just $12/gal and take 20 minutes for your million dollar platinum fuel cell.
yeah Cooley
They should be equipping this with Two of those large batteries no exceptions.
internal combustion engines pretty much platoed. electric engines/batteries are just starting. Model S is already the best car you can buy right now and it's the first "real" electric car.
Hi
The only problem for me the steering wheel looks ugly
home button ,lol

LOVE that climate control system!
This guy was made for cars!
That..... for 50 g's?!?.... Are they out off they effing mind??
Cooley!!
44 to 52 hours?? that's going backwards in technology, not forward.
well it depends if you are going forward on your charger - if you are stuck on 110V then you are the problem...j/k...
To me this is a test mule, Toyota can do a much better job given their partnership with Tesla.
A few "demo" models of this (back in 2011) had the Tesla charger connection! Would have been nice to keep this, but, I imagine Toyota didn't want to pay Tesla licensing fees, especially since this is a "compliance" vehicle.

Tesla doesn’t charge a license fee for its supercharger connector. It’s free
.
electrictroy2010 He’s talking about Tesla licensing the their charging port.
Yeah they definitely did it just because they had to.
Home button!! LMAO!!!
Um, that's why you install Chrome.
Apple will sue also for the color becouse is white and they have a iphone in white apple say they invent the white color
i remember the first rav4 electric from the early 90s
1997 is not early 90s
.
thumbs up if you r using google chrome and installed ads blocker
Model X babe!!!...
adblock if you're on chrome son
Lol apple will sue for the home bottom for sure they sue every body
Why can't u a witch
I mean hitch
Wot?
That would drain more power from the battery, which wouldn't make sense.
@@Viktor007 He asked why this RAV4 can't tow stuff.
Toyota is never serious about EV and only enter the market because they're forced to. When EVs went mainstream I will take note to boycott Toyota

How much is it going to cost me to fill up with hydrogen? Right now I can fill up my ev for nothing from my solar panels.

I had a hydrogen car and it sucked, because I had to keep visiting the gas station. An EV is much more convenient (can refill at home)
