  • Kyle drives the wildly interesting Toyota RAV4 EV that was developed by Tesla engineering with Model S parts. The battery pack, motor, and power electronics were all done by Tesla! What's this EV like to drive years after it hit the California (only) streets? Let's find out in this video...

    I just found out about this version of the RAV4, and I have a feeling that this just might be my gateway into owning an electric vehicle, because the Teslas are far too expensive, and the nicest looking EVs available right now cost at least 40 grand.

      @@UmmYeahOk Hi, down in Austin. Considering one of these on Carvana. Do you like yours?

    • @UmmYeahOk
      @UmmYeahOk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cauthoncrazy We bought ours from Carvana and I had wished we had it delivered to our home instead. We picked it up at the dealership solely for the novelty of buying a vehicle from a vending machine. The machine was broken, and the car was sitting outside waiting for us. The dealership was located directly across the highway from Toyota USA headquarters. A bit funny, because both the RAV4 and the HQ relocated to TX from CA. Anyway, an hour away, we had range anxiety coming home.
      For an EV, it’s ok, but don’t expect 2014 Tesla performance and range. If I wanted an EV crossover, I’d consider the Mach E. But you can’t argue with price. Ours was $16k during a time in which the used car market was insane. We had more nefarious reasons for the purchase. It is worth more for parts than a working driving EV. But it won’t be parted out for a while. We drove it as much as we could during the first month, as it was under warranty, and then whenever we would go to Lowe’s, just so that it got driven. Ultimately, it made more sense to just loan it to my father in law to commute to the train station, as too many people have damaged his F250 (which he actually uses recreationally) in attempt to steal his catalytic converters. It also benefits him due to gas prices. We get the spot in our driveway back, and it gets driven. So totally worth it.
      The downside to this vehicle, I feel, is range, and stability. It is super easy to spin the front tires, on dry roads, even unintentionally. Teslas don’t do this, despite having more power. The range is really about 100 miles. That’s not bad for a commuter, but you will have range anxiety. Cargo capacity is kinda a joke, and the hatch opens like a door, which is just awkward as hell to load and a bit scary, in regards to fearing other motorists hitting the opened door while you’re there. It also loves to beep at you. It beeps internally (not externally) as you back up. It beeps letting you know that you’ve walked away with the car still “running.” And and a bunch of other mild irritants.
      The shifter is also tricky, as there is a braking feature, but you set it, and done. You don’t hold it down like you would with a Chevy Volt. The cruise control also won’t work while it’s set. We didn’t know this for a long long time, and thought the cruise control was broken as sometimes it would work, and sometimes not. The radio controls are also slightly annoying, but the biggest issue is in regards to the Toyota app. If you want to unlock your car, precondition, etc, you need a subscription. This service is free to all Tesla owners, as well a Chevy owners. OnStar is still a subscription, but you can at least use the app to precondition. When it’s 100+ or 20 degrees, you don’t know how you lived before preconditioning a vehicle. The interior is also pretty basic/cheap.
      If you want a super rare unique vehicle that at the same time blends in any boring parking lot, the RAV4 is perfect. But for the price, I would prefer the second generation Chevy Volt. A “compact” car, it has the same leg room and cargo capacity, and has better styling IMO. Many luxury options like blind spot detection, leather interior, and free use of the app, can come on it, while the RAV4 just feels cheap. The range is 50-60, but it is a plug in hybrid, so range isn’t so much of an issue, because it uses gas to power the electric generator.
      Our first EV was a 2017 Chevy Volt. We never really drove far, so we probably put less than 10 miles on the gas powered part. We traded it in on a 2015 Tesla Model S. It’s a great vehicle, even used, but for the price, I still recommend the Volt to everyone. GM was stupid to kill off production. They didn’t even try to advertise it. My husband installed an EV kit powered with Nissan Leaf batteries in his 1955 GMC pickup, and the 2014 RAV4 EV is destined to end up in either the 57 Chevy Bel Air I have, or a 1953 Packard Caribbean if the Bel Air doesn’t get it. Just listing these to let you know what my experience with EVs in Texas are.
      If you want a crossover EV, and price is an issue, the RAV4 EV is worth it, but our Volt, built in 2016, was just so much nicer, and in the same price range. The RAV4 EV, IMO, just feels like a 10-20yo cheap crossover that just happens to be also an EV. 😕

    Update, 2024, Still driving the same 2013 Rav4 EV/ Tesla. 95,000 miles. Still driving on the replacement Motor. Toyota had to replace the charge controller, under warranty. ($3000.00). Replaced tires twice now, Just installed Third set at 95,000. First Brake job was at 75,000. I replaced all 4 rotors and pads, with after market, a lot better quality. That's all the maintenance over the last 10 years. passing this onto my kids, waiting in line for my Cyber truck. Wife loves her Model 3.
    I never added the chadmo, wasn't worth it. The truck worked well, all year long with the 40 mile commute, 80 miles round trip.
    I think I'm still the only one In NJ with this Rav4. Made Stainless Steel roof racks, and tow hitch.

There is one for sale in Tuscon with 86000 miles on it and I'm wondering if its still worth it. Your late to the show with this,, (Based In New Jersey) I purchased it back in 2012, and yes Only (2500 units) these were manufactured in a Canadian plant, from 2012 -2014 with the model S motor, Which all those motors made the harmonic sound, due to a wire winding that passed by the bearing. The warranty covered the replacement for free. Not so quick, parts had to be purchased by Toyota from Tesla and then shipped. (3 months) . The "GuessOmeter"Gauge will show 130, and that's at a perfect temp. Normal use, 110 miles in summer, In the winter it's in the 90's, and a lot lower if your really cold and use the heat. Great all around vehicle, I used it to commute, 40 miles one way.Just rolling pass 78,000 miles.

      @@JamesKlafehn, that’s odd that you would state that, “(JdeMO™) sucks and rarely works”, since you told the driver in this video that you used it all the time, and took trips with the car, and that there was a nearby fast charger that you used all the time with JdeMO™. For the record, the founder of our company personally installed your unit at your home in New York in 2015. • @QCCHARGE
      @QCCHARGE 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Jamice Weldon, there’s not really any additional degradation with JdeMO™. The unit was design to charge the lithium battery at slightly over “1C”, which is really easy on the battery. A modern Tesla car charges an 80 kWh battery in a Model 3 or Y at up to 250 kW, which is over “3C”.
      In addition, JdeMO™ is programmed to start slowing down the charge rate any time the battery exceeds 45C (113F), and to stop charging at 51C (124F). A typical Tesla car charges with the battery at 52C (126F) all day long on the Supercharger.
