    Just a tip from a 27 year painter: wet both sides of your putty knife with water or saliva, and press down firmly! You’re welcome

      Don't use water or saliva like this chap says. Instead, spread a small amount of cooking oil on both sides of the putty knife.

  • @goethe528

    You do not have to seal the underground with a coat. You can use linsee oil to soak the wood with before you apply the putty. When you use linseed oil based colors (just mix linseed oil with titanoxid) you will get a color, that does not exfoliate and is waterproof. It can easyly be overpainted after the years.

    • @ThePa1nterhowto

      goethe528 You are correct,traditionaly lindseed oil was used as a primer,this video seems to give a reasonable idea to get most people out of trouble.

    • @jackwardley3626
      @jackwardley3626 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      for priming you can use shellack knotting to speed the job up a bit

    • @marklittler784
      @marklittler784 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah of course a primer is needed first in order to stop the wood soaking the oil from the putty drying it out from underneath leading to it eventually cracking and recessing from the glass letting water rot the frame.

    Has tube putty made it to your shores?; you can use a caulking gun, the putty does not have to be mixed, and you may reduce the amount of smoothing required. You can also use some types of paintable caulks instead of putty to get faster dry/cure, rain-resistance, or cold-weather work times depending one where you live.

    • @DiyMoviesSA
      @DiyMoviesSA  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Mark, thanks for the info, I haven't seen tube putty, but then again I haven't done a window putty job for at least 5 years. It sounds like a great idea, especially if I can cut out the kneading.
      I'll have a look online and in the stores, thanks for passing along the information, kind regards, Don.

  • @theondebray

    I'm just thinking over painting the wood beforehand: I have long since ceased to use undercoat paints, as they are usually of a lower quality than the top coat paints, and allow the top coat to eventually release from the substrate. So, I am going to try some dilute exterior PVA (non-soluble when dry) which soaks right into the wood, & see how that works. With metal frames, I will clean them thoroughly with a tapered rotary wire brush, vac out the dust, and put the putty straight onto the metal frame. I am mulling over using a primer first, depending on what I have in my workshop. Nice vid anyway, thanks.

      Metal should certainly be painted first. An 2 pot epoxy primer would be the best for metal and is used in the marine industry. I use marine products and aproaches on houses as well. Old houses, renovation projects. More expensive yes. But sooo much better.

    Hi, advice please from all the experienced painters on here. Can I use Gloss undercoat for this job. Am in the UK and use gloss for external wood.
    On my own now and need to learn all the jobs that were done by partner who passed away. I have numerous frames to sort out here. Thank you in advance.

    • @DiyMoviesSA
      @DiyMoviesSA  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jane, no, one doesn't use a gloss to undercoat.
      You need to use an undercoat paint for the undercoat and then 2 topcoats.
      The undercoat bonds firmly to the wood and creates a good key for the topcoat to stick to.
      the topcoat looks lovely and forms a good protective covering for the wood.
      Topcoats have various levels of sheen and gloss is a level of sheen - or 'shinyness'.
      Go down to your local paint shop and speak to them there, they generally have good advice.
      And then watch my video again until the information is clear and watch some other videos on TH-cam to get some more info.
