Instead of chasing your tail, why not just take the bike down and thoroughly go through everything? Having the carbs on a work bench and all bike panels off. Less time than having to keep going in chasing problems and working around trying not to take the carb out. I hope it's your starter brushes and not hydrolocked from fuel. Also, when you were stopping during your final test ride and re-starting, on a hot/heat-soaked engine, the gasoline is vaporizing while sitting there. So it's definitely going to be too rich to start right up, especially if you're still having overflow and fuel pressure regulation issues on top of that. The crud in the bowl may be from ethanol. On my way home from rides I've pinpointed which neighbors mail box I can turn my petcock off at so that I pull into my garage and the engine shuts off and the carbs are all dry. Don't want that ethanol sitting around. I can run non-ethanol(89) if I want but with your engine's compression ratio and being turbo-charged, no bueno, so run those carbs dry before parking. That all said, I really enjoyed your video and you seem very patient! Nice bike and Subaru! We're definitely gear head brothers in spirit. (ps, rebuild that petcock and remove the second shutoff valve, less points of failure/future problem chasing. Also, ethanol very quickly weakens the rubber in the CV diaphragms and in the fuel pressure regulator) Edit: Ah, you have had the carbs out! Brand new to your channel and quickly looked through your past videos. Yeah, it's challenging with these old bikes/carbs and getting them dialed in, especially with fuels being very different than when that bike came out. Best of luck on your journey with this XJ, I'll be keeping an eye out for future videos.
Not being able to see thru the windshield while screaming down a 2 way road on a turbo bike is wild😂that's some 80's level wild right there😂OKAY MCGRUBER! I SEE U!😂
Usually the windscreen is blacked out.. you peek over it.. even on the giant deckers.. we don’t have wipers, the windshield is actually just a wind deflector on motorcycles..
I own one of these as well, I'm currently going thru the entire bike, especially the fuel and oil systems so I can hopefully avoid some of the problems your having. Wish me luck. Lol. The rubber seals in mine including the diaphragms were brittle as a rock. Reading around the forums a lot and these seem to be decently reliable for a 40 yr old bike once you get them gone thru, so hopefully that's the case! Your videos are a huge help to me so thank you so much for them. You have a great amount of patience and skill. Keep it up brother
Also get just on the sounds of your cold starts and idle I can tell your carbs are out of synch. Order yourself a yics tool and a vacuum gauge carb synch kit. It sounds like it revs out fine but I can hear your miss at idle. I have a lot of hands on time with xj bikes. Feel free to hit me with any questions you have!
Sounds like an excuse to modernize the engine control systems, and maybe a more modern turbo. Imagine it with a Haltech ECU, new loom, modern injectors and a more responsive turbo.....mmmm yum. Plus it'd be way more reliable.
Great to see your job.. Back on the turbo again!. Could it bee water coming into your bowls!.. Check your air flows and vacuum.. Thanks GG for great video!. :-)
Don't give up guy, I'm really enjoying your videos. I'm going through the same thing with my Seca turbo right now. After years of trying to fix just one problem at a time I finally took the carbs off and completely went through them and "wet set" all of them to ensure there was no needle and seat issues. The bike has never started so quickly after that. Also check out doing a fuel pressure regulator upgrade (Holley PN #12-887), your factory one is probably junk causing way too much fuel pressure.
The GPz turbo had a nice rush too, but they are actually deceptively slow. A YZF750 or even a MT09 will just walk away from them. An old used R1 will demolish them. When you add that to the old brakes, wheel sizes and suspension on the turbo you are leaving performance on the table for the trouble and money you have spent. Museum yes, modern road bike not so much. WAY not so much. Most bikes have had EFI for a couple of decades as well so cheap reliable performance is out there.
Interesting, my wife's 535 virago has a small lil pump that shuts off after enough pressure is built. As the bowls drain, allowing more fuel , the pump turns back on. The fuel pump should not be on consistently, i think. If it has a separate fuel regultor it must be that. But it's a different bike. I'm sure you will figure it out!
Have you checked your valve clearance? As for the carbs, if you try to sync them, you need a special Yamaha tool to block off the YICS port. Hit me up, I can send it to you to use.
I have XJ650 Turbo and i have none of your problems. You're having those issues NOT BECAUSE Yamaha "rushed the bike" as you say in your video but because you own a TERRIBLY NEGLECTED and worn out bike which needs a tonne of work and ideally a ground up restoration. You really expected that 40+ years old cheap bike will run sweet ? Here is a link to a video showing my XJ Turbo which runs and looks 10x better than yours so please don't slag off the lovely bike just because you have a lemon. Restore the bike and you'll see how wonderful and charming they are. Link below: th-cam.com/video/FV9rr6X7TcQ/w-d-xo.html

Think you're into something there..water in the fuel,.. We didn't have much of that going on in the 80s..
@@gorgon9786100% our taxes at works😂😂

@bmint i know it was a joke😆cause it used to be clear
I bought an XS1100 back in 1996 pre youtube days which was doing the same thing.
I’m pretty sure that the fuel regulator has adiafraam valve which gets sticky after sitting for years and it needs cleaning or replacing

The gummy stuff in the carb is just gelled ethanol. I wouldn't worry, just clean it out

I always loved the styling of this bike. Still looks like the future to me. 😎
time for a full carburetor internal replacement and balance.
I owned one these 25yrs ago and I had a hell of a time starting it as well, I used diesel starter fluid to quickly start it every time.
This thing is sweet, don't give up!
2mm at the float needle will be a lot more at the float.
Had to do the same thing to get rid of the battery warning that blocked the gear indicator on my VF750s
I found mine very simple to work on

Need to make a 2 step system so you never lag again 😂
I rebuilt both the carbs' on the Yamaha and Kawasaki and it made little difference, removing the whole turbo kit fixed this!
Its the color of lemons

I would have sold as a running parts bike already 😂
I'm considering converting to fuel injection on my 2 xj turbos. The carbs on these suck ass to tune right
I loved my Kawasaki turbo until the turbo kept sticking at high-speed trying to kill me all the time!
Bypass the fuel pump and test it. Although it doesn't smoke as if it's flooded.
Fuel of today can bee a pain, 6-8 weeks and it can turn bad blows!.
Holy $h1t i guess it's high your float has to be stuck 7:13 edit you used the magic tap
I rode a red one back in the day and it was the most horrid bike I ever rode except for the AMF sportster that never ran!
that looks like a parts bike to me!
Just put a SmartCarb on and call it good lol.

I'll take your word for it. Also, I'm restoring it right now.
😤
Bikes trash bruh
