Thanks for the video, looking forward to seeing this project 👍👍
No problem 👍
FANTASTIC!...Looking forward to watching the build
Time to get after it.
@@AstillDesign Howard YOU are Truly Inspiring
Definitely looking forward to seeing this one you've got all the part's needed it will be a awesome build thumbs up 👍👍👍
Thanks mate, I have a lot but I’m sure there is plenty more to purchase
I like those wheels, it will be interesting to see them on the car.
They will be good once I work them over
Awesome stuff mate
Thanks Mick
Chop the roof Howard, it will look amazing!
Maybe
No chopping!! They look too good to do that to.
Love the van Howard, look forward to seeing the build, heading to Nyngan this week for work
Good luck!
Had a xy panel van years ago. Cheers
They were good times
Oh to be able to watch you work on this would be a dream come true
Stay tuned in
@@AstillDesign always I'm about to start a VH build
Good job
Mate really interested in this one, very relatable build for many I’m sure.
yes mate, wont be long before we start
doing it old school = fun school. this would be be a good series to do and document as you get into and great to see which direction you take this.
Agreed, just need to get the numbers to add up.
Love it! Can't wait!
Good stuff
Just joined your channel very informative 😊
Welcome aboard, lots of catching up to do.
lets go love your vids mate
Thanks Fred, will do
I had an XC Van back in the early 90's, I ran a station wagon bumper on the back and to level out the angels on the corners I simply made an extension off the wagon bumpers brackets and the job was done, took 30 minutes, no need for cutting and weld the bumperette end onto the wagon bar.
I'm not real happy how it sits without modify, so will investigate my options. I had a complete one on my old van but my needs are a bit more refined now.
25k views in just gone 3 days! Howard I think the people are saying they want a build serious on the van! 😂 excited to see your amazing talents flow onto the van.
Well that's a thing, maybe your right
Glad you are still posting content.. my weeknight viewing would be rather boring otherwise!
Yes we will have something every Thursday
Cool XC Van, nice factory options
Thanks 👍will come up a treat
@@AstillDesign Mate i have a HZ Premier, need P.Steering recoed, can i have the name of the shop that fixed yours? thanks Jim
Figtree auto transmission’s
Love the sin bin howard.
Thanks mate
Ahhh so you've gotten your self a Sundowner.
Noice😁👌
Almost, just a rally pack with a lift gate
I just found your video where you're working on removing the side windows #8.
It took some finding to get back to the start of the story on this build.
Like so many guys who were around in the Panel Van era, I started buying up every magazine possible that included even 1 picture of a Panel Van.
Looking forward to catching up on what I missed 👍👍
New episode went up yesterday
Just discovered your channel. Good luck with this build. I've never had an XC, but did have an XE sedan with a 302, C4 and single system...........not those most powerful car, but great sound.
I do like the current Mustang and Ranger, but to be honest, can't even name what else Ford actually sells:- I have so little interest in them!
I grew up in the bush in the 70's and 80's. Not much to do, but there were plenty of V8 Ford's, Holden's and Chryslers around at that time............and they did provide some entertainment! The more we can get off the paddock, and back onto the road, the better. They're worth saving.
🤠👍
Yes, there are more and more being recovered
Set off from Wollongong around Australia in 83 in one of these things. Last seen in a wrecking yard in Broome. In its final days it took 3 people to start the bugger.
Lots of good memories I bet.
@AstillDesign
Yeah, great fun. Back then, it wasn't that hard to do. Pick up a bit of work here and there without much fuss. Fill the kitty and move a long. Until your car trips over going around a corner that didn't need to be there on a salt plain.
I love the panel van. I thought about dropping out the fuel tank in one of these and popping a drop tank out back running a 429. 4 seater. Keen to see what you do with it
Drop tank sounds interesting
Lovely. I'd love me a nice XB or XC van.
Go for it! there still out there
I'm a Holden nut through and through but your ford build's are next level Howard. Always have been. Street Machine covers were the bomb. Great to see a master sharing his craft. Today's youth should be grateful they get to witness a masters work step by step. Thanks brother
Our pleasure, nice to have you along
I worked at Fury Ford on Parramatta Rd Lidcombe before it closed, and I remember all the new old stock parts stored in a huge storage shed behind the pre-delivery department. parts from XB up to EB's, fenders, bumpers, mirrors, gauges, dash and consoles, engine parts, radiators, various switches and knobs, doors and locks, carpet mats, seats and seat covers. The place was packed! My old sales manager Alan Brazier said you could practically build entire cars with all the parts stored in there. I often wonder what happened to all the parts and if they were sold or thrown away when the site was sold and redeveloped.
Yeah it would be interesting to know. I worked at a dealer in the late 70's and every financial year I used to take ute loads of parts to the dump.
Very interesting . Tx Howard.
Especially seeing that you are retaining the single rail gearbox.
I was looking at going for 400 hp on me XB GT freshen up, and was concerned that my single rail would struggle.
So that is a relief. Be interested to know how much they can handle.
FWIW. Mine was stolen years ago, and when I got it back the inside of the back guards was coated in a layer of rubber.
And you should have smelt the diff oil.
So the low lifes were obviously "bagging it up". The gearbox was fine. So I was fairly confident.. But it was nice to
get your opinion.
It all comes back to how you drive it. I belted my original van in the 70’s. did a few clutches but the gearbox was fine. Be interesting to see how the shifter goes
@@AstillDesign If you want to learn how to drive without a clutch, go with the original twin plate pos. Had to start in gear as it
dragged so much. Went to a F250? with coil springs.. Errk ... and finally an 11" Chev diaphram one. But there is aftermarket stuff now.
Shifter? That nylon fitting used to flog out in Escorts, leaving the gearstick in your hands. Not the same box I know. But I never had
any real probs in mine.
Would love to see you enter your van in the Summernats! But that’s just my thoughts
I will definitely be entering the Summernats
Cant wait to see how you go with one of your own builds, and how its a bit of a tribute back to your old wagon. Dont suppose you know if the old van is long gone, dead, or sitting forgotten in someones shed and waiting to come back home to you!??
Not sure if you knew, Ian Hazel recently bought back Prem70 and is cruising it reguarly again. Still exactly the same as back when it was up against your old van!
No idea what happened to the van. I did see Prem70 back out, the van was well before Prem 70 came on the scene
Be great to see it as a build series
I will cover it, just can’t commit to a time schedule just yet
Really enjoy watching your show's regardless of what you are doing
I appreciate that!
I’m really hyped for this one. I had a HZ van with no side windows and made the back into a sleeper and fitted it out myself 25 years ago. After I drove it for a bit and did a fair bit of travelling up and down the east coast I moved it on. I’m feeling all nostalgic watching you go back to where your show car journey started. 70’s vans no matter the badge were and still are cool
It was a great time to be on the road
Nice project, look forward to it.
Thanks! Me too
I’m really looking forward to this build
Cheers mate
Always loved the XC shape! Good to see a nice resto with a few upgrades. Nothing over the top. Can't wait! 💪🏼💪🏼
You and me both!
Used to work in Nyngan years ago, never saw this cruising around.
Was used by an earth mover that did the grading out of town
@@AstillDesign There you go, well good to see it being saved getting a new life.
Most backyard car builders rummaging thru boxes and bags wondering where tf those bits were put...a man who knows what he's doing, rows of blow-mould tables with everything neatly set out and easy to see! 👌👌
Thank you algorithms, subscribed and looking forward to following this!!
Cheers Adam, all reboxed and label and back on shelves in the containeer
What a great project this will be to watch no matter how much footage comes out of it in the end.
Cheers mate
How about a Retro "van" T shirt once design is finalised? Excited for the build .. makes me wanna drive my Fords ..
Sounds like a good idea
Always loved your builds in past and can't wait to see the end result with this one. 👍
Thanks 👍
Great to see you here Howard. Was a huge fan back when Summernats meant something and you were always open to giving advice and pointers. I was a mini affection-ado and you were at the all British day at old Parliament House way back when. You were approachable and talked freely about everything and anything. Keep up the great work. We are all getting older and wiser and still have three minis and inheriting mums XD 302 Ute in the same green your van was as well as a 1985 XF S Pak in Budget Green. So as I am getting older, I am still taking in strays.
Hey Rob, been to so many shows over the years. Good to see your still at it and a few fords in the collection as well.
Hi Howard great video. I've been a panel beater for awhile now started my apprenticeship in 1986. Great to see you doing these cars. Thanks for the videos
My pleasure, good to see your still in the trade
Can’t wait to see the progress on this, I love watching the details you put in to your work Howard. Thanks for sharing
Will do Darren
Good luck with the build, really enjoy all the videos you put up
Great work 👍
Thanks, will do!
Very nice van. looking forward to the build

Been looking forward to seeing this build. Had a number of Escort panel vans myself. The roads don't look the same without panelvans. A great reminder of what once was on the roads.
Cheers mate, should be fun once we get it done
Great vid Howard 👌👍can't wait to see van things
Good oh
Be definitely along for this build as well 👍
good to have you along
This going to be a great build to watch

Always a pleasure to say hello

Definitely looking forward to seeing this build.

Almost impossible 2 find . Good 👍 luck with your build .
Owned a Sandman 4.2 ltr & sold it 😢😢😢 poor decision on my behalf.
Yeah we all had cars we wish we still had.
Looking forward to the build Howard.
Thanks
Love it, love it, love it! Great to se the XC pano getting a start. Love the XC's and as mentioned in the prior video, I had a very similar van, same colour but the factory 351, 4 speed & 9". Wish I still had it. Thanks for the tour of all things XC parts, great stuff. Will be watching every second of this build.
Cheers mate
As a novice restorer, (now on my 2nd project) I'm really keen on seeing how a passionate professional goes about restoring their own project. Your videos also keep me motivated to keep going when struggling to complete tedious but necessary jobs. Love your work Howard.
Thanks Geoff keep at it
Just got to say, when this popped on my YT feed, subbed immediately. Been a fan of your work since Rock Solid.
You have a lot a content to catch up on then
Looking forward to seeing the build

As someone who had an HQ van back in the 80's , this girl looks forward to seeing your progress on the build. 🙂
Good to have you along
Looking forward to this one as well Howard.

Wow so nice to see a panelvan again 👍 Really looking forward to seeing the progress when it happens mate 👍

Great stuff Howard, had an XC GS with 351/4 speed, and tailgate when i was a young lad. Unfortunately it was stolen, stripped and burnt out! Good luck with the build mate, love your work.
That would have been a cool ride. What colour was it
Really looking forward to this one , always been a big fan of the XC panelvan with the tailgate

The panelvans. Have always. Been. Nice. If I was to do one myself. I would do. A. Station wagon. I like the. Xa. Ones. This is cool. Van. They must be hard to find now. Right.
Cool idea
If I still worked on cars. I would do a station wagon. Ford. Myself. But I stopped driving and working on cars around. 2012. About same time. Carol. Shelby died. Which is crazy cause he left my a lot of money and buildings. To. Buy a workshop. Or. Start one up. But I told him. I think I just get into law enforcement now. /. I had a lot of drama from military and blackrock and. Car industry. So. I want a new pth in life. Now. .. he understand. He liked the FBI too. So. Yes. I guess I just take my mo way and leave it in bank. Now. But I may buy a. Cr one day. I Only. a car enthusiast
That xe. On other video is nice. I liked them. So much. I was goin to rebuild my one. But Larry sold it to a motorcycle club. Members. For. 5 thousand dollars. Yes. I was bitter on that. But I found out. It wasn’t ll his fault. As it was. Hyland family again. With bill Russell agin causes drama. .. ha. They all pedos. I. Hastings workshops. Mac horn and Greg and. Jock and Andrew and. Drinks aNd John curtain. They were all toxic. Pedofiles. ANd abusers. Look. It’s a shame. They. Reson. Why. I. Don’t want. Workshop or work on cars now. It’s left me very bitter. But I do still like the ford cars. / it’s not the cars fault I bitter. Right. It’s the. Military and cults. Who I not even a part off. They. Destroying my. Every job in the industry. So I walked away. //. I won’t be back. As law enforcement is my new path now. And. I still got my company. Which I will. Sick Larry and tell him to fuck right off. And then sell my company to Russia. And keep some shares. So yes. Not much time for car industry now. But I enjoy watching the craft and hard work ThT goes into. Upkeep of these cars and get them to a level. Of this quality. .. yes it. Take such skill and. A lot of. He’s work. And the end result is. Also. So nice to look at and Also drive. It’s amazing to see how big the car culture is to. Anyway. These fords. Are. Very nice.
Starting with a car that good, the outcome is going to be amazing as usual!! Lift up drop down tailgate and windowless doesn't get any better than that. 👍
Thanks James
Excited to see this build unfold 👍
Cheers
awsome love a panno, great project
Right on
Good on you mate bring back the van I'm sure it's going to look sensational like all the rest of your cars looking forward to seeing it finished 👍
Will be fun I’m thinking
@@AstillDesign hi mate like I said I'm sure it will be awesome as I know what you put into it. Lol suprised you're going with a single rail and not a loader and a nine inch but like you said you're not building a race car so I'm sure it will handle it 😉
No interest in a top loader, it would be a Tremic TKO 5 speed if I was upgrading
Great vid Howard ! This build is going to be epic ! Really pumped to see this build and will be hanging out for each video to come out !
good to hear
You say your probably going to leave the outside stock! Mmmm we'll see Lol. Whatever you do I'm sure it'll be a fantastic looking car. "Can't wait"
Thanks Chris
Look forward to seeing the progress on this one. very much enjoyed the boss XC build series. And just because you mentioned it 😄I happen to have an original XC v8 motorcraft air-con pump sitting in my shed no bracket unfortunately. Was in good working order when removed many years ago
It amazing what we have stashed away
I wouldn’t lay a single finger on the body - leave exactly as it is and jsut restore it mechanically with modern upgrades.
It’s got a great patina as it is - it’s earnt it ;)
Nah mate, not for the King of Bling
@@AstillDesign I’m a fan of keeping patina on old cars. See the Icon Derelicts from California for inspiration.
He digs old classics out of the desert and modernises the mechanics (usually with an LS crate engine) and restores the interior. Leaves the body as he found it externally.
Looking forward to see how you deal with the Sills. I have an XH panelvan and the sills need replacing in it also. Keep up the great work love your channel.
Sills look good in this one, will find out soon
Make sure the gear stick on your single rail has the plastic thread holding it into the box.
They are really good.....
Said no one ever.
Put in the quick change shifter with the aluminum thread
@@AstillDesign if u must. The plastic 1 was good when it the stick pulled straight out of the box while u were driving
Already done mate
This is the build I’ve been waiting for. I went and looked at this van at Grays and messaged Darren to tell you about it. I got one of the workers there to help open the hood ( I have American cars lol) fired her up 👌. That rag joint was a beauty,
yeah it had been bodgee up just enough to be considered a driver
I remember the how popular the van scene was in late 70's to early 80's. Can't wait to see the progress with the xc
Thanks Terry
Will be interesting to watch you do the side window delete. Glad you’re going down that route as IMO a PV with side windows might as well be a station wagon. They are a “ Panel” van
Never thought of it like that.
13:28 bubble window going in. Not clear if it's just one to replace the rear screen?
👏👍🏻🍺
Thanks Tim
I always had the thought of grafting on a XC station wagon roof/windows to the XC panel van, in the style of a Nomad two door sport wagon. I know its not what you're after, but this vehicle would be a great candidate. It will be amazing either way with you building it.
I do have some similar idea's but need to keep it simple or it wont get done
Can't wait to see this all come together
Me too
Looking forward to seeing your XC Falcon Panel Van - fully completed later on. Regards from William - Mount Gambier - South Australia 🇦🇺 .
Awesome, thank you!
Hi Howard, you certainly have been busy collecting parts. Its a really nice looking van, I doubt weather you could find such a rust free example here in salty old NZ. I have a set of those rims on my XY Ute, 17 x 8. Looking forward to seeing the van restored Astill style. Cheers from NZ, Phil.
Thanks Phil
Thanks mate. This should be a nice casual build for you.
Yeah not so much pressure, do what I want when I want
This is really cool , love these panel vans we don't have anything like this the UK ,will be cool with the old and new touches , can't wait to start a project of my own after umming and arring for about 10 years I'm looking at Ford 100es .
What about the “baby brother” Escort panel vans? They were pretty popular here in AU, and I know they were a good seller in the UK back in the 70s.
Thanks Steve
@@commodorenut i thought about those after , very rare and expensive now nearest thing is an escort van from the 80s and 90s still expensive but cool when done nicely , I think the reason I like the falcon as ND Holden panels is because of mad max .
I was hoping you were going to go full send custom on this feeling a little sad, but it'll be an awesome build without a doubt anticipating watching it happen!
Not enough budget to do that
Going back to where it all started. Should be a neat project when it's all done, what you seem to have planned should be nice, not too over the top, these can be the best cars, I remember Ron Barclay's HQ ute, that wasn't over the top but is still one of my favorite cars of all time.
Oh so true
Happy Australia day Howard.
Looking forward to seeing this van being done.ln my personal opinion the drip rails would look alot better left on.
The wheels would look great painted the same colour as the van in the centre and
the rest with that brushed aluminium look and powder coated in clear.
Cheers mate, wheels will be a grey centre
@@AstillDesign l know the look your going for like the wheels that came out on the 70s falcons?.
Hi mate, I love this project!! Hopefully you can make it into a build series? Keep up the great work!!
Thanks mate, will do my best
Hi Howard firstly congrats on Boss XC an amazing looking car. I wish I had never sold my XC. Anyway I am interested in more details on the van engine. The conversion of a 302W to a 351W. Did u use a stroker kit?
Hi, You note a 302W, I take that as a windsor. the van is a cleveland. With a cleveland change the crank and rod from a 302 and you have a 351. Check your head combustion chamber size (cc) to determine compression. The van is using a 351 crank with 302 rods (longer than 351) requiring a shorter piston. It gives a different rotating ratio. Not something that is done now days with all the stroker options that are available.
@@AstillDesign Hi thanks for the reply. Yes a 302 Windsor. What's theory behind the longer rods I would have thought shorter rods but I guess that's why the shorter piston. i gues the same can be done with the 302W looks like I need to do some research. Thanks again.
I nearly bought a dark blue 302 XC PV as my second car back in the mid/late 80's - wish I had.
It was a good time
Hi Howard,
Just finished (nearly) an XC Pano for my wife - street cruiser, few long trips planned. Custom wheels ship Friday. You mentioned 18 x 8, & 18 x 9, same as I have coming. You said you have 275/45 for the rear. Just confirming that will fit on a standard tub car, 9", disc rear? My wheel guy recommended 265/35, but I don't want to run on rubber bands. Appreciate your insight.
Cheers, Leigh
Hi, Standard diff in this one and standard wheel wells. Will depend on your wheel offfset.
@@AstillDesign Thanks, my offset is 6P.
3:56 if you take the drip rails off, a good solution for the weird look is a simple pinstripe. Even a double black pinstripe with that green would be sick.
There is a factory body line there as well
