      Would a custom ssd that uses a m.2 NVME ssd placed in a USB enclosure work with the black magic cameras?
      For example I use a Plugable SSD toolless enclosure with Samsung 970 Evo Plus 1TB, which can write sustained at 1700MB/s and the lowest speed seen is about 1500, which is faster than the USB interface can do.
      Would it just go ahead and write to the ssd but stop if too slow, or would it stay safe and just not work

    Hey Sara! This question may sound dumb but I’m new to editing. How do you edit from a external hard drive? Don’t you have to bring the files into your computer/editing software to be able to edit? And when you do in iMovie aren’t they automatically copied to your library folder, which uses internal space. Some advise/education would be awesome! Love the channel!!

    • @AlexanderGeorge
      @AlexanderGeorge ปีที่แล้ว

      Nah you just drag the files in your editor from the external ssd. Just use it as a normal drive. Untill you export the finished video, the external hard drive must obviously remain connected to pc

  • @tillycatcat
    @tillycatcat 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    @Sara - Of course this is a Samsung sponsored video, but testing shows that these are a fair chunk slower than the SanDisk Extreme Pro's. But that isn't actually your best option, not by a long shot especially for video.
    The best option (for Macs) is actually to get an OWC Envoy Express for portable or a 4M2 for your desk (but it's also fairly portable!).
    Both are Thunderbolt 3 enclosures - which is important! They both accept any m.2 2080 drive. The Express is Bus powered so no need for a power supply and can shift 1500MB/s depending on the drive.
    The 4M2 is special. It's small - it does require external power, but you can put in 4 m.2 SSD's and if you use RAID and Stripe them (Raid 0 or Raid 10) you can get back 2800MB/s. If you have a lot of footage going through your project - this is probably the best solution.
    Now this all may sound a bit techy and over the top, but there's one thing that I particularly like about this setup for the non-powered workflow. Because they are enclosures, when I'm done with a project (or projects), I can remove that M.2 drive, store it like I would an SD card for an important project (backed up on the card, on the pc and an external drive) and put it in my drawer. If I need to come back to that drive, I can simply hot swap it in.
    1TB M.2s can be had for 100 bucks these days. I think all in all, this could be one of the setups of the future - SD card style!
