    I'd be careful with using the T7 shield for ProRes. Yes it will work but if you try 4K60 in LOG and it will drop frames, the footage is unusable. I'm doing a new video about SSDs covering this but I'd recommend the X9 or X10 for fastest ProRes on the iPhone 15 Pro range:

    7:12 Months ago I was completely sold on the idea of using one of those NVMe SSD’s but the problem is that that set up is expensive and they don’t give you much more speed. I wanted to take advantage of the WD SN850 SSD card which has an advertised speed of up to 7,300MB/s.
    The problem is that the enclosure costs at least $200 and the 2TB card is another $200 and there’s basically nothing on the market that can handle this speed when it comes to enclosures. So you are bottle-necked by it at around 2,800MB/s. Real scenarios even lower than that. At this point, I prefer to just get a WD Black Gaming SSD that gets you 2,000MB/s or an OWC that could give you up to 2,800MB/s and save myself the hassle of Frankeinsteining one with an enclosure that would never reach even half the advertised speed.

  • @garymartin9777
    @garymartin9777 ปีที่แล้ว +28

    To properly evaluate an SSD you need to look at much more than speed. For example, test each block of the device to make sure it retains data. That takes a while on these larger devices and you might want to repeat the rest several times to make sure there's no drop-out. Vendors test these devices and grade them accordingly. The cheaper an SSD is the greater the risk you got a dud and a fair percentage of the device doesn't hold data.

    I love ssd’s. Be careful though. I apparently killed the filesystem (HFS) on a 2tb samsung T7 by using a dongle on an iPad (I think). I had around 750GB worth of data on there and it didn’t mount on my ipad anymore. “No biggy” I thought. I just mount it on my Mbp and run Disk Utility to restructure the file system
    When I did a mount attempt, it crashed my macbook(reaally old 2012 model) . I thought that it was a coincidence so I tried to mount it on my second macbook(2015 intel model) and the same happened. Basically: I couldn’t mount a HFS formatted ssd on my macs at all! I had to grab my Windows machine, run a java based HFS reader to see if I could salvage the data.
    Didn’t expect it but it ran perfectly on my windows machine! I just did a backup and do a format.
    As I mentioned before. Be careful! The way that you mount an ssd is apparently very important. The power output with an Ipad is (i’m guessing) not very optimal. In my situation, it caused the drive to malfunction unfortunately.

    I am using T7 1Tb, Lacie rugged thunderbolt 3 2Tb, 3 WD ultra passport 4TB and still need for more probably.:( For me I think each can depend on the occasion purposes. If need fast, thunderbolt Lacie rugged is the one. If in the middle rush, then the T7 will be named. Otherwise, just ordinary download and for the longterm, storage, WD 4tb will be the cost effective choice.

  • @JonInLondon
    @JonInLondon ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Thanks for that.
    (My original comment disappeared, so here's one without links...)
    I particularly like the standard size T7 drives, as they are the width/length of a credit card and 6-7 non-embossed cards thick, plus are metal and are routinely available in the UK for ninety-something quid for the 2TB ones. Rather entertainingly they do tend to charge differently by your colour choice, so grey can be the cheap option. I also like the simple way the encryption works (I have one set as encrypted and one not, the encryption doesn't work with my M1 iPad Pro).
    BTW I see some people are VERY unhappy with their Sandisk drives:
    The Verge: "We just lost 3TB of data on a SanDisk Extreme SSD"
    ARS Technica: "SanDisk’s silence deafens as high-profile users say Extreme SSDs still broken"
    (I don't use the drives so know nothing more, but you might want to look into firmware versions...)
    Some thoughts:
    - sometimes the capacity affects the performance, by having wider memory. Probably best to benchmark all the same size drives if possible.
    - The T7 that is almost full (the encrypted one) did seem to slow down its write speeds as it got close to its capacity.
    BTW in the Samsung app it shows details on the drive and includes the USB speed. Mine say "USB 3.2 gen 1" which surprised me as they are supposed to be gen 2 devices and I had them connected to a USB 3.0 port. A coffee later I remembered USB3.2 gen 1 and USB 3.0 are exactly the same thing and it was just showing the connected speed, but it would have been nice of them to label it or give all 3 possible names (as USB 3.1 gen 1 is also the same thing).

    • @nazmulhuda3262.

      How would it be to get T7 touch for long term storage and use purpose? Is it reliable?

    • @JonInLondon
      @JonInLondon 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@nazmulhuda3262. It's a tricky one as SSDs have a chequered record for long-term storage, as do most other things alas.
      Perhaps the best thing is to use disks with error correction (e.g. RAID5 in a NAS) and upgrade them over time. Perhaps with a separate USB3-4 disk backup too.
      You can get optical disks rated for long-term storage, but still seem brave.
      Tape drives can produce long-term data but that's no good if the drive dies and there isn't a compatible replacement model.

    My SSD is the 1TB version of SanDisk Extreme Pro Portable SSD V2. The first time, I experienced file loss which led to the disappearance of all my files. Even though I used EaseUS software, the recovered video files turned out to be damaged. Fortunately, I had file backups. So, I decided to format the SSD, changing the file format from ExFAT to APFS, as it's said to be better for Apple systems. With a mindset of giving it a try, I decided not to return the SSD and continued using it. However, after a week of formatting, during one of my usage sessions, the same issue occurred again - all files were lost! Within just two weeks, this SSD lost my files twice. I can no longer use a drive that is prone to randomly losing files; it's unbearable for me!

    @5:58 - This part was really important for me. Temps after stress test is a real thing now, mainly because of Tesla. I'm looking for a good capacity, good speed, good temp SSD for the TeslaCam. I seen some videos on the Samsung T7 having issues with overheating, so I'm gonna get the Crucial X8.
    Advice: definitely keep temps as a point of focus in future videos because as Tesla gets more popular other companies are gonna follow, and thus more cars are going to have built in cams that are going to need these kinds of SSD with low temp and high speeds.

    The problem what most of these drive have, it;s that they throttle instantly when thermals kick in. This means, if you have to store some bigger or just many files, the speed will going down, after a short period. Best thing to do, is to buy a good external case, nice an cool, put a ssd into and then you will sustain high transfer rates over longer periods.

    • @AlexGTech

    I recently bought it, but it’s not connecting with my iPhone.
    Additionally, I frequently need to format it for use with both MacBook and Windows. Is there a specific method to make it compatible with both formats?

    Great video! Thank you for your hard work. It would have been cool to see a few screens summarising the results and perhaps ranking them :) - but overall really good - I'm a new sub thanks again

      Cheers Dave! I’m working on an update to this video as there’s a couple of new options now (and I’m not sure on recommending Sandisk right now, they had some serious issues a few weeks back) anyway, thanks so much for the kind words and welcome to the channel 🙏🏼

    I just bought 2 Samsung t7 1 tb drives that went on sale yesterday before I saw this comparison. Seems like I did the right thing!

    One of the most friendliest and detailed review channels. Thanks for another wonderful review. I'm not sure if it was me not paying attention, but wished that you had concluded what was the fastest drive for a M1 MBP user. Many thanks!
