KIA Sorento 2021 - Telluride for Europe (ENG) - Test Drive and Review

  • The 2021 KIA Sorento is the fourth generation of the Korean SUV. Launched in 2002 the first Sorento was still built on a ladder frame, but the next two generations ditched the off-road pedigree in exchange for better on-road handling. The new KIA Sorento is on a new platform, which should be even better on the road. And to make sure U in SUV stands for utility, rather than useless, KIA also offers new AWD system.
    The new Sorento is 1 cm longer and wider, than the outgoing third model. The wheelbase is 3.5 cm longer. Depending on the trim and powertrain KIA Sorento can have 17-20 inch rims.
    In the front the most prominent feature is the flat, sharp-ending bonnet. The A pillars were moved back an couple of centimeters to optically extend the silhouette. From the side a silver tooth around the C pillars grabs attention, and probably grabbing attention is its only function. In the back vertical tail lamps are supposed to remind us of the bigger Telluride.
    The new KIA Sorento comes with a 2.2. diesel mated to an 8-speed new generation DCT, or with a hybrid powertrain with 1.6 turbo petrol engine, and an electric motor. Sorento PHEV will launch in 2021.
    ↔ KIA Sorento dimensions:
    ✔ length: 4810 mm
    ✔ width: 1900 mm
    ✔ height: 1700 mm
    ✔ wheelbase: 2815 mm
    ✔ boot/trunk: 179/813/1996 L
    💲 KIA Sorento: 41 400 euro
    💲 KIA Sorento HEV EcoHybrid price as tested: 58 000 euro

    I own a 2015 Sorento. I really like the car. We have 6 of us in our family and it suits us really well, especially when we drove from Ireland to France a couple of years ago. Plenty of space and comfort.
    My average fuel consumption since I bought it is 34.3mpg (8.23 l/100km)
    I would be very interested in the PHEV Sorento as I think I would benefit from using it in electric mode.

    Great review! I used to have the previous generation Sorento and your points about the child seats were spot on. 2 child seats in 2nd row and no one could fit in the middle seat or get access to the 3rd row. So only option if travelling with 5 people would be to flip up one of the 3rd row seats and have them scramble in through the hatch! Used to get funny looks when letting them out via the tailgate when we arrived at our destination. Only thing I disliked about this car.

      AFAIR there are no dedicated air vents for the glovebox or armrest storage. However as there are air ducts close to both, the temperature inside will be affected. Granted, it's not as effective, as when you have cold or hot air blown inside directly.

    My new diesel version does about 10mpg better than your test petrol/hybrid. About 40mpg/7lts/100kms. It averages 7.4lts/100kms.
    Have no problem with the HVAC system which I set to auto and 21C. The temperature is consistent with that set for the system on mine. I'm very impressed with it overall and its refinement, performance and fuel economy in particular.
    I am contract hiring this car because I can do so for the cost of 26 cigarettes in the UK daily, and I do not smoke. That includes comprehensive insurance and the deposit on rental averaged over 365 days.

It's only 4.9 meters long (shorter the the Passat) and actually you can put in there 4 child's eats in the back (2 in third row and 2 in second). And it drives much like a car!

  • @hedydd2
    @hedydd2 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Went for a test drive the other day and the diesel with eight speed DCT, and the car overall impressed me very much. In the UK the diesel is only available in the middle of three specs that excludes the sun roof, blind spot and surround cameras and remote forward and reverse for unparking in a tight spot that doesn't allow driver access. None of which are of any consequence to me. I would have liked the heads-up display and particularly memory for the driver's seat though. Not deal breakers. Will be taking delivery before Christmas as a three year business hire at a daily rental that is only £2 per day more than a packet of 20 cigarettes [£15] with a limit of 36,000 miles/ 58,000kms.
    Should mention that my previous car was a 2017 Volvo XC90 which I sold in April and not replaced due to seeing how the Covid lockdown went and, basically, nowhere to go. It will be interesting to see how I compare them after a couple of months of running the Kia. First impressions are very favourable with far less road noise, similar performance, even more room inside, an enhanced infotainment system, more comfortable ride and seats. Time will tell.

      Diesel engines have become very competent and refined and clean these days, but at the expense of being very complex. They have very high pressure injection, particulate filters, cooled EGR, selective catalytic reduction with DEF/Adblue and so on. If fuel is cheap and not a particular concern and you do not bunker fuel at home in America, then best stick with gas [petrol], especially if annual milage is low or a high proportion of journeys are short.

  • @janneoksanen4162

    Nice video, but a bit disappointed with the new Sorento... It looks cool, but from the looks of it we here in Europe only get the bulged estate versions (which the earlier XM & UM versions pretty much were), while at least US gets the more rugged X-Line trim. When I was browsing the KIA pages here in my country, they didn't even have pricing for the diesel version yet, only for the hybrid... Which is just bonkers, and total overkill (as car market nowadays here in Europe is) considering the nature of this car. I bet a lot of buyers in this segment would appreciate the torque of a diesel in this kind of car...

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You're not missing much. As far as I can tell the X-Line is just a design pack, which adds nothing to the off road prowess. Also the US cars get 2.5L petrol engines (NA and Turbo), which would not work in Europe (screw emissions, but fuel economy!), as well as the 1.6 hybrid. Stock footage shows they don't get three Terrain modes (Sand, Mud, Snow), only Snow. Comfort is added between Eco and Sport, beside Smart.

    At 58000 EUR you can't put a 1.6 engine, it's just ridiculous. I get it, it's a lot of car, but the 230 hp are with the electric motor too.
    If you don't have electricity in the battery what do you do?
    It should have been a 2.0 turbocharged petrol engine that can easily do 250 hp on it's own (or maybe 280 like the Alfa Romeo Stelvio does) and to add a hybrid for fuel consumption.
    People that pay 60,000 EUR for a car are not going to care about fuel consumption that much.
    I don't get how Kia and Hyundai want to consider themselves the smart choice yet they go into Audi Q7 money territory (base model probably but still)...

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hybrid never fully depletes the traction battery. The battery is almost constantly recharged during coasting, braking or with excess energy produced by the petrol engine. I suppose you'd have to drive it flat out for a very, very long time to deplete the battery and go into some sort limited power mode.
      I imagine you heard about car journalists getting the BMW i8 to go into limp mode. They indeed managed to deplete both traction batteries (as the i8 is a plug-in), but they were really pushing it on the track. The i8 rarely goes on the track, and I imagine the Sorento is even less likely to do laps of the Laguna Seca :)

    • @manu144x
      @manu144x 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marek Drives I know it never depletes it, it just goes down to the maximum usable battery power.
      I had a hybrid 508 and the idea was the same, even though it was empty it still had 25% power but it was inaccessible.
      When the battery was over 50% when accelerating it was using both motors and when it was lower it never would, only the diesel was, but it was ok since it had 163hp just the diesel.
      Since this is not a plug in i’m assuming it has a small battery with a very limited electric range, something like 1-2 kwh. From experience with a much lighter car and smaller electric motor you would empty that battery in roughly 2-3 rounds of accelerations easily.
      I would be curious if you tested that scenario, if the 0-100 times are impacted by battery charge level?
      I really liked the Hyundai Santa Fe (same car basically) but it was at around 48k. But the small ICE engine disappointed me.
      I don’t understand why they don’t offer something faster.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You must be literally the only person, who bought the 508 RXH (great car BTW). I never thought Peugeot would screw it up to the point, where you would go into limp mode. No other hybrid does that under normal circumstances. Are you sure there is nothing wrong with the hybrid system on your car? It doesn't sound like something normal.

    • @manu144x
      @manu144x 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@MarekDrives You misunderstood me :)
      First, I only bought it used since i'm not crazy to pay that absurd amount of money on it.
      Second, it wasn't going into limp mode, it was just strictly using the diesel engine, which was working normal, no issues.
      But the electric motor was not used at all.
      Since the car is rated at 200 hp theoretically (like the Kia is at 240) in reality it was 200hp only if the battery has enough usable charge, otherwise it was only using the diesel's 163hp. It was a little slower but not noticeable, only if you timed it.
      The same issue I see here, it's rated at 240hp for both motors, but in reality if the battery doesn't have enough charge you're only using the 1.6 gas engine to move this big tank. Plus since it's a gas engine, the torque is only usable if you rev it.

    Looks great, but honestly, I am disappointed by the fuel economy figures for the hybrid. Also, I don't know what they were thinking with a 1.6L Turbo for this hybrid power train on a bigger 3 row SUV. It makes as much power as the Rav4 Hybrid, which is much smaller. Also, tows much less. All in all, love the looks and tech, disappointed in the power train. Might have to just get the Telluride.

    Marek, why is this price difference between Poland and Germany ? I live in in the Netherlands and here it is even more expensive ...

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Local representatives of car companies negotiate certain pricing with the HQ based on the market and goals a carmaker wants to achieve. Here in Poland this is already quite expensive (not expensive by this segment standards, but generally expensive). A way for KIA to get a stronger foothold is to sell more cars, and in order to achieve this goal it has to be perceived as a value proposition. I would imagine in wealthier Western countries there is room for higher margins, hence prices in higher.
      Having said that premium brands in Poland are usually considerably more expensive than in Western Europe (at least on paper, because they are then heavily discounted).

    that towing cap is just sad. Only a few real 3,5t towers are now left and most of the hybrids or ev-s are incapable of any towing. It is big, cool looking, comfortable - but sadly impractical.

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Towing capacity is often limited by the gross combined weight rating that a driver's license allows. For example in Europe that's 3.5 tons. Add a 2 ton trailer to a 1.5 ton car, and you're at the limit.

    • @Snowhite808
      @Snowhite808 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@MarekDrives our permis de conduire has a categorie BE- this means up to 3,5t car with 3,5t trailer. And B cat car capable /allowed to tow that weight. This is the usual "truck" trailering a boat. and the boat does not have to be very heavy - the trailers add a lot. But there are rarer every day on our market. Plenty in americas and australia for ex. Quite often it is down to the car makers dodging some silly regulations. tow box stiffness etc...
      Not saying there should be even more campers and boats on the road - but there are less and less cars that You can do any work with by the day.

    Why do you need ifix points in front passenger seat no child under 12 years old should sit in the front

    • @MarekDrives
      @MarekDrives 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes, but no.
      Children under the age of 13 should not travel in the front seat without appropriate support (child seat or booster seat). There may be some wiggle room if a child is particularly big for their age, and exceeds the booster seat weight/height limit, but then it's better for the child to travel in the back, just to avoid having to explain oneself to the authorities, should something go wrong.
      As for smaller children, these can (and sometimes have to) be carried in child seats mounted in the front of the car, as long as the front passenger airbag is deactivated. A small child should be supervised, and therefore it is easier for the parent-driver to be able to glance at a child on the front passenger seat, than when it is in the back.
      Ideally we should all have chauffeurs and maids to take care of such things, but that's a different story.
